- donnikhan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+67The fact that a senior managing director said this makes it almost as good as official
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+67The Japanese price, yes.
Unfortunately though, how often does a console cost the same in all countries after conversion?
At the moment (using xe.com) 25000 yen is US$223, AU$294, 174 Euros. . . you get the idea.
This may result in a price of US$220, AU$300, 180 Euros, but it's more likely that the prices are going to be localised, a little higher in some markets, maybe a little lower in some (where they expect lower sales mayhap?). Remember, the PS3 costs US$599, 599 euros and AU$999, those do not work out to be the same when converted to one base currency. The Xbox 360 is the exact same.
So, in summation, we know the Japanese price will be under 25000 yen, from this we can SPECULATE more accurately what we will pay, but until they officially announce the prices for each region, we don't actually know. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34The Japanese price is usually slightly higher compared to US pricing, so I think this puts us in the ballpark for a $199 release. I'm sure it'll just be the console and 1 complete "Wii-mote", so you'll probably want to plunk down an extra ~$100 so you can pick up another controller and a few titles.
Launch day, here I come! - Pirkel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Every other Nintendo console has cost $199 at launch
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I'm pretty sure all the past Nintendo consoles have gone for $200. Iwata said take a look at their past pricing. I'm going to be putting aside $200...
- staticsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17same!... Sony has just lost their business with me... lol
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18So that's less than $250, even in Canada. Awesome. I think I'm going to get one now.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I wish they'd hurry up and release it! Then again, I don't.. I don't want a rushed piece of junk :P
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Keep in mind that probably will not include a game, and only 2 controllers tops. I'd set aside about $300 at least to get some good games and controllers.
- dolson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It'd be awesome if Mario and the new Duck Hunt were bundled with the Wii, just like when Nintendo first showed up on the scene to dominate.
But I doubt we would be so lucky at release day.. Likely a stripped down package with one controller. Wii Sports, if included, would be great value. I wouldn't likely buy it if it wasn't included, just because it won't compare to any of the EA or other sport games. From what I have heard, you can't even play the full game of baseball, it's just a homerun derby kind of thing. That's good fun for a while I'm sure, but not worth $30-$50. - benkenobi00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11In Australia we also have to pay the GST (Goods and Services Tax) and secondly I think its more expensive to ship the consoles to Australia.
- roastedbagel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I gotta admit, I'm buying the Wii mainly for Zelda, other then that I haven't owned a Nintendo console since SNES (I know, I know), but I've always loved Zelda, and the fact that they can get a consumer such as myself to buy a console based on one game is pretty outstanding, kudos as always to Nintendo and their low price on this console.
- wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10£150 would be great. I'd certainly buy my wife one at that price. Yes, she's a Nintendo fan, having grown up with their consoles. Her family love Mario on their old SNES, including her 50-something parents. Me, I've never even played a console game, always having owned PCs. Now that we've switched from PCs (Win & Linux) to Macs at home, a console would make sense for gaming and she could play her favourite old Nintendo games on the Wii. I'm sure she'd be delighted.
I've never even contemplated buying a console before, but I'm really excited about the Wii and have been following the coverage of it for months. - alanspach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Thats Awesome I'll take two
- bobbywan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm 27 and I haven't been this excited about a video game since they ported SF2 to the Genesis.--that's pretty geeky. there i said it.
Man that was a great day....right up there with being born. - aggies11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10From Economics 101:
Prices are determined by the market. What the public is willing to pay, and by how much they company is willing to produce.
O fcourse, in reality, nintendo gets to set the price. However they *Will choose the price that makes them the most money*. Different locations/regions have different price sensitivities, costs of living and other market factors. If their market research indicates that they will sell just as many consoles if they price it $50 higher in Australia, then they will do it. They find the sweet spot for each country/region they sell in. As a business it doesn't make much sense to set a flat worldwide price when all markets/regions are not equal.
What that ultimately means is that it's lower for some, and higher for others.
It seems weird, but from an Economic standpoint, it makes sense. Although with globalization, these market differences should be shrinking and eventually may dissapear?
Aggies - anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9for that price, and the fun you can have with that controller, how can you say no?
- domokunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10In the UK we pay "value" added tax (VAT), so it will be higher here than the direct(£120) conversion. But still compare that to xbox, over 200 and PS3, over 400, not bad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sweet, It'll probably cost about £150 over here most likely, can't wait!
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10So that will be 6 million Wiis before the end of March. I wonder how many of those will be at launch.
- wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Does anyone know the dollar and yen prices of the DS Lite, for comparison?
- thepolkapunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If a link to a better article had been posted, you'd see that Yoshihiro Mori announced A SEPERATE PRICE POINT FOR AMERICA!!! It is going to be $250 or less in America!!! The $220 price point is FOR JAPAN ONLY!!!
Take a look at this article from the BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/5014904.stm - fcuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No, Google says: "Results 1 - 3 of about 66 from digg.com for "wii cost". (0.22 seconds)"
- aposter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"literally fly off the shelf" Cool. Neat new controller, AND antigrav. I want one. ;)
- decksnfx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Japan = generally more expensive than the US, right?
Sorry SONY...make mine Wii.
Oh wait. I'm not sorry. - ghostcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think part of the reason people are watching the price so closely isn't for themselves, they want to see how the console will do in the market. There will be a significant difference in impulse sales between $200 and $250. More impulse buys equals more people playing, equals more people to play smash brothers with. Also, more popularity will mean more 3rd party support, and maybe some defections back to the big N. I know that's why I'm watching the price. I'd buy the Wii for as much as $400.
- Madh2orat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i'm hoping that they release a bundle, for something in the $300 range. It could have 4 remotes, and possible a game. That's how i got my old N64, 4 controllers, the console, and an EA Baseball game.
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5On a side note, I've already been told by one of the local EBGames manager that they will be using the same tactics to sucker in customers to spend more money. I quote,
"Those who pre-order extra controlers and games will have first come, first server basis IF we run out of consoles."
So once again, on the oversell our order limit train. However, he did go on to say,
"Stores aren't going to do pre-orders for shipments that haven't been ordered yet"
aka. The XBox 360 fiasco where shipments were reserved that weren't even ordered yet. So in one sentence he said order more stuff, in the next he contradicted himself by saying we didn't need to order more stuff because they weren't going to screw up this time. - Jams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The player"
Does that refer to the user or the console? :P - longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Trjn: gamespot is reporting that the max US price will be $250 according to the Nintendo guy. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6151827.html
- mamluk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I have never owned a game console, not even a NES when I was growing up :( but if the Wii costs around 200, I will seriously consider getting one. I wonder though, how much of the game playing population would make their decision on the price of a console? It seems most of the hardcore gamers would buy without much regard to the price, I suppose Nintendo is expecting to reach a lot of the casual gaming market. This is an interesting strategy and certainly different than Sony and MS's strategies. It might be riskier as gaming moves more into the mainstream (and thus more hardcode gamers having a greater influence in the market).
- CAP811, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9We are now the Knights Who Say "Wii!"
- Battousai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Note that the GameCube was released in Japan at 25,000 yen also: http://www.planetgamecube.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=6618
This pretty much assures (as if it hadn't already been) a $200 USD price at release in North America. - spooq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@aniseed: I think Solis meant OLD super mario bros...
- LordBug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4jtzapp - Where did you read this? I don't remember seeing it. I like the price points, but would love to see it in print somewhere (not calling you a liar or anything, just curious).
- aegreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4God forbid you have to ignore it yourself and move on to the next article.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This one is wrong - the actual price in USD confirmed by Nintendo as a maximum is $250 - http://wii.qj.net/Nintendo-Announces-Wii-Information/pg/49/aid/45709
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@aniseed:
1. If Xbox 360 premium can bundle an Xbox Live Arcade game (Hexite?) then Nintendo Wii could be bundled with one Virtual Console title (SMB?) to get you started.
2. Wii Sports doesn't look like crap at all. - chadu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3jtzapp - also curious... link please!
- pshultz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Only problem is US$199 in 1985 = US$368.34 in 2006. Adjusted for inflation all consoles and games are much cheaper then when we where kids. (a US$40 dollar game in '85 = US$70 today)
- Ghost_MH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ pshultz
But Nintendo always launches at $200 in spite of inflation...As for games being cheaper. You don't need inflation figures for that. Just jump back to the cartridge days and think about the great $70+ games...In early '90s money. - jahdigga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh i get it you have to explicitly point out your sarcasm or risk getting ranked down by legions of humorless f*nboys
- Xeppo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, you're crazy. The Gamecube is NOT the Wii. The Wii is substantially better than the gamecube as far as sheer power (and hardware costs) are concerned. Anything lower than $200, while beneficial to the end-user, would be completely insane from a capitalistic standpoint. They would LOSE money on the console. Nintendo is smarter than Sony and Microsoft. They actually know how to turn a profit from hardware sales.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I think the conversion rates make perfect sense here, and I think the way he puts it at 25000 yen is because it sounds nice. he cant say 20000 yen because that equals $179 which is to low. I really think were getting a 199 launch price! I actually wrote some more commentary on this and the conversion rates here:
http://www.wii-volution.com/index.php - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No, likely Nintendo will drop the $150 price-drop bomb once Microsoft or Sony does their first price drop. If anyone was going to consider the premium Xbox 360 for $300 then a $150 Wii still seems a lot cheaper.
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Seals the deal. I will be buying a Wii for sure.
- skatingrox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The current PS2 price is 129.99$. That's not wholly divisible by 50 last time i checked.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i've said this before on Digg.. and i'll say it again
Retail price of Nintendo consoles at launch
NES .. $199 USD
SNES .. $199 USD
N64 .. $199 USD
Gamecube .. $199 USD
Wii projected at $199 USD
Anyone see a pattern here?!!
(if u don't believe me, check out wikipedia for the launch prices of each) - jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Your right! Damn the BBC for their latest article .. If the world expects the US price to be 250 or less it might give nintendo the nerve to release it at 249.99 as was rumored at E3. I hope they surprise us with a $199 price point!
- doubleYou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@greenbox - The Canadian and Australian dollars are not 1:1 on exchange rates with the US dollar. That's one reason that a dollar price is higher for Australa. Different countries also have their own taxation rules, which further bumps that price up. In some countries, the advertised price includes all taxes, whereas in the US, the tax amount is not included in the announced price. Some states have no sales taxes, while other states have taxes that vary amongst their counties.
