- dnite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+72Ya, generally HD means High Definition, HDD means hard disk drive...
- jpwhitmore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62So basically the title should have been "Wii MAY Have HD"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+63.......digg me down........
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41True. But "not impossible for" is different from "to have." A little misleading.
- Leo21k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34I was Thinking HD TV when I saw "HD".
- BlackSheepx, on 11/13/2007, -9/+31Does anybody who wants the Wii REAALLLY care about HD? :/
- cwilson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26This is interesting. This is obviously speculation until they actually announce something but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens. I'd be curious as to how many games will actually take full advantage of the higher resolution and how far they can push the hardware before it suffers a performance hit. Still, the original Xbox had a few games in true HD resolutions so I imagine the Wii would be just as capable.
- Wolfbeta, on 11/13/2007, -14/+33I do. Do you have any idea how bad Zelda looks on my 52"?
- dvflameartist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Higher resolution output means nothing without higher resolution texture maps. Unless you're talking about purely generated geometry and colors. Remember that Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 could put out 1080i...and that console was branded as being 480i and 480p only. Granted the 1080i output didn't really improve anything visually...maybe only a tad sharper, but tons of jagged edges. I'd much rather have 480p60 with some good anti aliasing than 1080i60 with no anti aliasing.
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@Wolfbeta:
Zelda looks great on my 61". But I can only guess how much better it would look in HD.
If this can be done via firmware then I say bring it on. If they want me to buy another console then I will have to pass. - Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16You're thinking of 480p. It's 480 lines progressive scan. It's also called ED (enhanced definition) but is not HD. Many newer, non-hd TVs are ED and upscale standard analog 480i broadcasts.
- thesauce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+131080i menus would be nice. So would 1080i/720p NES games. Playing NES games in HD is like playing an old Euro NES on RGB, it looks so much sharper. Also, if Nintendo released an HD-patch sometime within 6 months, game devs could have another 4 years to make higher resolution games to match the new HD output. Who knows, maybe Nintendo will release another ***** memory expansion like they did for the N64 :p
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16GOD, I THOUGHT THIS ARTICLE WAS ABOUT HIP DISARTICULATION.
ACRONYMS SHOULD BE COMPLETELY OUTLAWED BECAUSE I HAVE NO COMMON SENSE~ - Settra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Today, in fact.
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"do you really think a 700Mhz"
...you fool!
Clock speed is only a small part of the performance puzzle!
...I bet you think a 4GHz Pentium D would be faster at everything than a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo. - Fitzavig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10High def would be fairly good for web browsing I'm betting.
For example: as you're viewing digg, lower your resolution to below 800x600. You shall see my point soon enough.. - donkeydrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9misleading title
- Warblade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't think it's a big deal. You should be able to figure out which "HD", hard drive or high def, that one is referring to within the context.
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Dude 1080i was heaps better in Tourist Trophy, you could see the corner coming much easier, i presume it was the same for GT4.
- bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Could it be that like Apple, who sneaks in 802.11n cards poised as 802.11g for future-proofing, Nintendo has some kind of video upscaler on their Wii hardware to be activated through a future firmware update?
Possible? - aggies11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8As anyone who does PC gaming will know, when you turn up the resolution, you have to turn down the graphics quality to maintain the same performance (fps) level.
So *if* they did allow it to output native HD, the games would actually have to look even less "pretty". N64 graphics at 1080p isn't exactly appealing ;)
To handle HD at the same graphic quality levels, the Wii would need a hardware boost.
Aggies - fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@daygo140
you're right, I saw HD and thought they were talking about Hard Dicks, does that make me gay? - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wouldn't the problem be that if you move to an HD Res like 720P, 1080i, etc that the Wii would be pushing a lot more pixels around the screen and thus not really be able to handle it. I'd think you would seriously alienate some fans also if you release a separate model that will do HD. If its a firmware upgrade and new set of cables though, i'm all for it.
- SeVeRyourTies, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Let's post without reading the article, shall we? It's talking about HD not an HDD.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Aggies,
You're only correct if your system is already working 100% in order to output the original graphics quality. If there is enough overhead in the GPU and Processor it may just be possible for the Wii to push 720i.
Either way, Nintendo will NOT be in a rush to do this...not after their bold words about HD not being important for this generation. - MemeWarrior, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yes, there will be an update waiting for you in your Wii channels one day; and when you activate it magical Wii faeries will arrive and transform the Broadway chip in you Wii to an eight core processor with hypertheading. Thus making your Wii capable of displaying a 2560x1600 resolution on the 30in Dell or Apple Cinema Display of your choice.
- Bigopinion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Misleading title, but interesting story -- confirms what I was thinking, "THEY CAN UPDATE THE WII TO DO *ANYTHING*!!!"
I'll hold my digg on this story for when a "CONFIRMED HD UPDATE FOR WII" story breaks. - insaneps3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8i have explored the system options after doing multiple system updates to my Wii and there is an option in there to switch the Wii to display all graphics in 1080i format or standard 480p format.
i have a dell LCD HD TV, all though the option was greyed out, it looks like in the near future it will be a possibility to be an option to switch game resolutions.
GREAT SUCCESS !
HIGH FIVE ! - Munkey106, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8What would be the point of having HD support!?!? The graphics don't need it!
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Keep dreaming, fanboys.
I have a Wii and it's good as it is. The low-price point has been such a selling point, why kill it ?!? - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So basically it will be something similar to 1080p support for the 360? Just proper up-scaling ...better than nothing I guess.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Marked as innaccurate, there is no definite statement on if it will handle HD
- afwjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well lets see about the horsepower. The Wii is about twice as powerful as the gamecube right? And the gamecube was more powerful then the PS2, and the PS2 could do 1080i right? I don't see why the Wii doesn't have the extra power, Zelda while beautiful is really a Gamecube game so it is only using half the power of the Wii. I wouldn't mind seeing Zelda or Resident Evil 4 in HD. I imagine with a little bit of tweaking, we could see games with better textures and graphics then these and also in HD. All this doesn't really bother me, cause Zelda is fantastic anyways and looks great on my 50 inch HD tv, even in 480i.
- ArekRashan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where? My Wii tells me that I have all the most current version of the system software, and the only options I see are 480i and 480p.
- Bigopinion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They went with a new, more advanced audio/video output (Nintendo has kept relatively the same A/V output device from the SNES to the GCN in one form or another) so there's no telling. Those new plugs look a little more intricate, but the contacts of a proprietary output cable aren't exactly concrete evidence of technological improvement.
- Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well... as much as I agree, I can see how HD capability can help playing wii on bigger screens. That way you're not getting average graphics on a horrible stretched-out resolution.
- Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You are retarded.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What'd really be sweet would be if they released an update so that it'd go out and buy an HD TV for me or something, so that the HD update would actually be useful. As it is, though, I'm quite happy with my current TV (which I got for free, and lacks HD).
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4News at 11.... Wii to support an HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) addon in 2007. Sony said to be pissed about the possibility of losing.
- Variz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Wolfbeta: Zelda looks fantastic on my 60" Wega. Perhaps it's personal taste? I love the graphics. I was pleasantly surprised as I wasn't expecting to say "ooh nice" to the graphics when I plugged in my Wii.
- gage006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The option was grayed out because you have to use component cables or something able to output HD resolutions. The standard cables it comes with can't do it.
- babylonian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Speculation =/= fact. Why can't people just submit honest headlines anymore?
- afwjam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't see any reason why it needs to be HDMI, component cables work just fine for the xbox.
- aupton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love the wii.... but it looks like ***** on a 70" screen even running at 480p with the component cables... I really hope they do something fast because as good as zelda is... it just looks horrible when played on anything bigger than 36"

Yes that is true. However with consoles, the games usually (almost always) are operating at near 100% of the machine's resources. It doesn't make sense not to. Since they aren't trying to hit a "range" of machine specs (each system is the same), they usually try to get as much out of it as they can.
If there was extra room in the game, why wouldn't they use it to make it look even better?
So while this may apply to a small minority of games, you usually can't count on the system to have "some extra horsepower saved", to up the resolution.
Aggies - mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was Square for Crystal Chronicles, Nintendo only made Zelda: Four Swords with 4-way GBA. One game. And which orifice did you pull that 200 bucks out of? It could be as simple as a $10 firmware update and a special cable.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is new hardware. They'd already have to modify it to support HD output, there's no reason to assume they couldn't include a higher clocked GPU as well.
There are really two obstacles to this. The first is getting games designed to run at SD resolutions to run in HD. This could be forced and aided by the firmware. Another more likely approach would be what they did with the XBOX; some games will support 720p, but all games will support 480i/480p.
The second obstacle is performance; the Wii doesn't have the graphical power to render most stuff in 720p. As I mentioned, they'd need a higher clocked GPU to get this working. - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really doubt this.
- mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would just like to point out they said it wouldn't have a DVD player either. The best I'd hope for is a firmware upgrade and a special cable.
