- Quaid, on 10/12/2007, -25/+84Excellent news. Sony derserves every bit ow ownage they are getting, rootkitting, price gouging, walkman stealing bastards.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39@Software2
You see, both Microsoft and Sony hyped their consoles. However, Sony decided to be much more deceiving about it, saying that screenshots and E3 videos were.. haha.. REAL-TIME rendered on the console. Videos like the Killzone E3 videos and Tekken 6. People have been assuming that the reason the console costs so much is because its easily more powerful than the competition: the 360. Now that we have sources OTHER than Sony about all this, and loads of professional analyses of the hardware, what they did right and what they did wrong, especially compared to the 360's hardware. We now know that the 360 hardware is infact a little bit more powerful overall, at least for rendering games. This isn't too suprising when you realize that: 1. the 360 would cost as much as the PS3 if the HD-DVD player was included, and 2. the PS3 was set to launch only a few months after the 360, it just ran into production problems. Virtually no changes have been made with the hardware for the year people assume they used to 'get an advantage and improve the hardware'.
Put that all together, throw in the huge misconceptions about the PS3 being called a 'supercomputer' by Sony execs, seeing the arrogance displayed by Sony... now you might see how the PS3 won't live up to the 'expectations' of the general public. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36We really love to hate the PS3, don't we?
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -10/+33@ Software2
With all the hype that sony force fed us they led us to believe that the ps3 would be the end all for gaming for the next 10 years. It didnt live up to that, and now sony is getting hit hard. So I am pretty sure it fell below pretty much everyone's standards. - dt40, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29Sony likes to pwn their customers' computers with rootkits.
We don't like that.
Hence, we root against the PS3... and anything else they do. - dirtyhipster, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25@gxc
Isn't most of the ps3's killer line up going to be on the 360 now as well? And I think most people expected that the ps3 wasn't going to do so well, so technically didn't it meet the expectations? :] - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12is it just me or was sony in the position to win this generation because of there dominence with the ps2, they had the public thinking there product would murder the 360 and Wii, but instead they ***** up and pointed the gun in the wrong direction and shot themelves in the face, but are trying to convice people they are ok all the while.
- Eyeooga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12May His noodly appendage bless you...
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I own a Wii and a 360 but I wont get a PS3...for now.
The Wii is a blast, but i don't feel like I could play a 100+ hour epic game on it with the controller. I could log in 1,000+ on Wii Boxing alone, but traditional games just don't do it for me on the Wii.
The 360 has Live. Multiplayer gaming is where it's at for most gamers and Microsoft has it on lockdown. It will do well regardless of it's competitors because it does what is does so well and so tightly. It is just a very well thought out and well done machine and no one can deny that.
The PS3 is too expensive. Simple enough. It's a beast of a machine but the price tag just doesn't match it. I wouldn't buy it for any reason at this price, it's just too much for me to invest. Once it goes through a significant price drop and it has a decent amount of exclusives then we'll talk, but for now I just can't. I feel like this should be obvious to all the critics and the fans. This is just it. I don't care if PS3 gives 1080p and has Blu-Ray, I can't afford it so I don't care. It does what the 360 does and costs a lot more. Granted once the power it tapped it will excel over MS, but I would rather wait out the price drop.
Just my two cents. - Mosatii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Every store I've been to all you have to do is ask one of the cashiers for the remote.
- robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Break even? Even at $600 they're losing money on the consoles! If they dropped the price they'd just be loosing even more money!
This is a sinkin' ship, boys and girls... arrogance in the marketplace makes you customers wander... - EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Sony had the best position possible.
A new controller(I really hate that ***** PS1 style POS, the least comfortable thing ever) and no blu-ray may have done it.
I do admit, I hate cutting corners on something...but Sony seemed to have cut corners in all the wrong places and leave on some un-needed fat.
Just imagine how popular the PS3 would have been if it did not have BR-D support(and costed $200 less without that, and a few other unneeded crap trimmed) and they required games to support keyboard/mouse setups(and there was an option to buy wireless USB/PS2 adapters so you didn't have to buy super long extension cables for them). It would have been crazy! :D - spriggig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I think Wii sales would be even stronger if it were easier to play the game in store. My kids and I have seen the Wii in the sealed crystal box at various retailers, but it doesn't seem possible to try a few games. I understand the Wiimote is cordless and it would be difficult to leave it out for people to try. Couldn't it be tied down with a cable or something?
- vz1pcg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Sony has made SERIOUS mistakes this generation. Over hyping, (something they are notorious for doing), over-pricing, forcing BluRay, ignoring the market needs, under-delivering, talking smack, delaying the launch, being way over-confident, and generally screwing over thousands of customers in trying to reduce production costs eliminating a hardware scaler. Sony simply made the wrong decisions.
I'm not a Sony hater. I've owned MANY Sony products throughout the years, and I'd buy one of their SXRD HDTV sets in a heartbeat, but when a company puts the interests of corporate greed at the forefront to the detriment of customer satisfaction, that's when I call foul and stop buying their products.
Next gen gaming starts when they say it does? *****. I got my 360 November of last year and have enjoyed 13 months of HD gaming. What's Sony delivered during that time? Empty promises, and pre-rendered videos at trade shows. Personally, my time is MUCH more valuable than Sony estimates. I don't have the spare time to postpone my gaming life a full year just because some uptight suits in Japan have lost touch with true gamers. Heck, i just had a baby in July and haven't had much time to game since then. If I waited for the PS3, I'd be seriously pissed right now and feel very cheated out of an entire year of awesome next-gen gaming.
So ask yourselves this. What is your time worth to you? Apparently Sony doesn't think it's worth much. They made you wait a whole year just so they could further their plans of dominating the future entertainment market with BluRay. How is this customer-focused? Hell, they had people waiting in line for weeks and even stated that you should want to work longer hours to afford the system. You're all just a bunch of lame-ass gamers with no real aspirations in life right? You exist only to work, eat, sleep, and breath so you can line Sony's coffers right?
Stand up and speak with your wallets! End their unchecked oligarchic tactics and make them, once again, earn gaming cred like they did with the PS1. Support the Wii60 movement this generation and maybe Sony will come to play ball next generation. - capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think it would be more useful if Sony could drive the PS3's price down.
- syncomm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Someday this magic bean is going to grow into the biggest damn beanstalk you've ever seen! There will even be a goose laying golden eggs at the top! It's all true, the guy who sold it to me promised -- as he pocketed my $600
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13You Wii fanboys should.....
You say XBox360 is meeting expectations? I don't care. There's no way the PS3 isn't kicking everyones butt, and I can prove it. At my Best Buy they have plenty on the shelves. So obviously, Sony is beating manufacturing expectations too. Nintendo can't even make enough Wii's to keep them in stock. How sad.
Yes, this is sarcasm. - aschocobo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10yeah i know what you mean. it's almost impossible to play wii in-store demos here also.
still though, i think it's interesting that wii hype almost seems to be driven by word of mouth alone. even without playable demo kiosks, it's still on the top of the list. i can't tell if it's just a coincidence or if nintendo anticipated this into their marketing strategy, but it seems to be working.
as for sony...well, it appears that(for the time being) they grossly overestimated the limits of their would be consumers, especially with the ps3 price point.
in my opinion, while it's still too early to know if any of the consoles are a hit or miss, sony is running out of time to install their console base in the average home. yes, it's only been less than three months, but i think that if they take too long, the ps3 may go the road of the gamecube, in that:
the other two consoles will have established themselves in the average home on a larger scale than the ps3, and
developers will take note of that and develop for the systems they know people will be more likely to buy games for, possibly leaving the ps3 3rd-party pool parched. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Seriously, without the forced blu-ray player (which no game needs), the PS3 would probably a whole lot cheaper and you would have seen much higher sales for just that reason. The only thing thats selling the PS3 right now is the hardcore PS2 fanbase. Everybody else sees how there's no games for it, and how god damn expensive it is, and says no.
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Is the WII somehow superior to the PS3's funcationality simply because it sells more or means that it's a better system? NO!!!"
Yes, yes it is. The fact thatit is meeting Nintendo's goal of expanding the gaming market means it is superior machine for that goal. And yes, it's a better system because people obviously wants it despite the hype and massive marketing by Sony and Microsoft. - foovo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8No, I hear they are much, much bigger
- dysonlu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Word. Honest and balanced opinion; no bashing. That's good to see... for a change.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I did, but that's not at all available to us as consumers. Until I see movies being sold in a single format (like that one) that I can buy/rent, I wont buy a HD player.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I completely agree, thats why I didn't even mention any other Sony practices in my above post. However, there's enough ***** just within the PS3's development history for us to have the right to be pissed at Sony for over-hyping their console.

You can meet, exceed, or fall below the "predictions." - Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@hinterteile
I think he's saying that even though they are on blu-ray discs they could just as easily be on dvd discs. They don't actually need all that extra space. - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If only they could get the Japanese to like the Xbox 360...
- cisox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't see why people keep raving about PS3 hate on Digg. Obviously some people on Digg don't like the PS3 or Sony, that is why stories like these get to the front page. If you like the PS3 or Sony, just don't digg the article.
- Heatseeker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5holy crap sony, drop the price of the ps3 and pray to God that enough people buy the software so your asses can at least break even. every day you make yourself look more and more retarded. and listen to the small amount of loyal customers that you have left and stop ignoring them. you're not as invincible as you think you are.
- KanosWRX, on 10/12/2007, -21/+25We have a 360, I played the Wii, and we just got a PS3. Honestly, the 360 is a nice system, but I haven't found a game I can really get into yet. Call of Duty 3 was close, Gears of War looked nice and had some neat features, but I felt like I was playing doom 3 again and I didn't like that. Then I got resistance on the PS3 and I think I just found the next gen game I really love. Not to mention Gran Turismo HD. Right now I am loving the PS3, although I did pop in a PS2 game and saw the crappy graphics, that sucked, hopefully they will have a fix for that. Otherwise its not a big deal, I think we have 2 or 3 ps2's lying around the house. Honestly for what you get the PS3 is a good system, I for one love watching movies and the blue ray is a very nice feature. We also have the HD DVD player for the 360, so I am set now :) Technology ain't cheap but it is nice. All in all spent about 600 on the XBOX and HDDVD and 600 on the PS3, I think I am liking the PS3 more right now.
BTW Still waiting to find a Wii, but my friend has it so I am in no big hurry. - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Zoxy
True, but for better or worse, the PS3 will have to deal with competition for its entire lifespan. It's not like Nintendo or Microsoft will go belly up anytime soon. That's why Microsoft took a gamble on getting their console out first. At most, only one company gets to launch without any "current generation" competition. Everyone else just has to deal with it, and at the moment it looks like Sony is dealing with it poorly. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yes, I think that the PS3 is a great system for people with money to burn. I mean, there are some alright games on it, I just really can't get over the fact that it's so damn expensive...I think Sony expected everybody to open up new credit cards to buy this thing, but they were sorely misguided
If the PS3 can survive until next Christmas (which, I'm not really sure it can), they could drop the price on the thing and try to move them again. The thing is, the more they drop the price, the more money they'll lose
Sony can go on and on about how much value there is in the console, how you're getting a $1000 DVD player and a computer that you can't buy at retail, but the fact remains that $600 is way too much for a gaming system. Sony should have scaled back, dropped Blu-Ray and tried to make this thing work - FlakPyro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4dont forget ubuntu loving
- aschocobo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7you forgot to mention "spaghetti-monster-worshiping".
- vz1pcg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If your display is native 720p, that's the max resolution you'll ever get. You'll never see 1080i or 1080p, regardless of your hookups. All your games will be in 720p, as well as Bluray.
- c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Nintendo is definitely prudent in not having playable demos in stores. Imagine if they allowed it. The thing is so fun you would always have crowds. That is an obvious safety concern with all the inexperienced players attempting power serves in tennis. You would have injured players, injured spectators, and broken merchandise. It would also be a hassle to prevent people from stealing the wii remotes because you wouldn't be able to simply add a security cord to the thing and still have fun playing.
I can't imagine there will ever be playable systems in stores.
edit: @mosatii: really? is that at a big box store? I guess they could do that at a gamestop or something when its slow. Surprising, regardless. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Why, because it includes a blu-ray player? Do you really WANT a blu-ray player? I dont want ANY HD-player until the two camps ***** fix the division with some kind of dual-format player. Microsoft gives the consumer the choice to pay the extra cost to get the HD player, Sony forces it on you, and just brags about how awesome it is (newsflash: its not better than HD-DVD, no HD movie or game will ever need more than 20 GB of space)
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@muikano
"You will have games in the future exceeding 4 Gigabytes."
you do know that the xbox360 dvd's hold up to 9gb right? And there have already been games that are over 4gb for a long time. - smergs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PS3 is over priced. Hell, XBOX 360 is too expensive for a game console. (I still own and love my 360 though).
Nintendo is priced right. It's fun. It's what people want with video games. Something different. No wonder it is doing so well. Nintendo should be enjoying their success right now. They deserve it by giving people what they really want. Something new. That's what next Gen is about. Right? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Borat: "You would be very popular in my country [Wii], and her too [360]. Her [PS3..]....not so much."
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yep thats true. Go to a videogame store, not a Walmart or Best Buy kinda place (theirs are just plastic cases with a dvd player underneath; not a lot of fun), and you can ask for a remote at the cashiers desk and give it a go. My closest Electronics Boutique had an actual demo I've seen played. The real demo units have some Zelda fishing/dungeon exploring disk I believe, if you wanna look before you ask and possibly get disappointed. I overheard the manager talking about it with a person who was playing, he said they had a Wii Sports disk they could put in but really didn't feel like bothering with people swinging their arms around all over the place.
- taxman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Kanos,you have your opinion and thats fine. Even if someone said resistance is a better game than GOW,its their opinion and thats fine.
But seriously the next line when u said u like resistance............i am lost.If anything, Resistance is more like doom than GOW....how in the world can u dislike one game cos it was like your generic FPS, when its not, but like the generic FPS.
Meanwhile, I dont like Jenny Mccarthy cos shes got huge boobs but i like Pamela. - Sergio965, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Enough with the god damn spam.
On topic...I wonder how much Sony has to lose ($) for them to redesign the PS3... - Zoxy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Ignignokt01
All he was was saying is that the PS3 is a better deal the the 360+HDPlayer. He wasn't saying anything about whether you want either or not.
360 Prem + HDPlayer = 600
PS3 core (same features as the 360 Prem) = 500
People seem the never mention the PS3 core. Its 100 more then the 360 prem but it has a hd player with it. Either way you look at it, the blu-ray player adds 100 to the price of the ps3. Some may not want but for the people who do, it is a good price for the combo. - Judge373, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3More anti-Sony news, FTW!
- gubatron2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did Borat write the title for this article?
- Boor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2All the PS3 demo stations Ive come across haven't been operational. Which is all of 2. One at the local EB and one at the not so local future shop. Both with black screens :(.
- negativenancy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10I fail to see how the Sony rootkit debacle is any worse than Microsoft and their monopolistic practices/buggy software. If you can hate the PS3 because of the Rootkit fiasco, then I can hate the Xbox 360 because Microsoft releases substandard software. They are entirely different branches within the company, so stop comparing them.
Jesus, the amount of hate the PS3 is getting is ridiculous, and this is coming from a Wii owner. - robbiedo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do I understand this right about the PS3? My two main displays are both HDMI equipped. Both are 720P native displays.
1.The displays I have will accept the PS3 1080P signal and display this as 1080i, which they are both capable of.
2. 720P games will work fine.
3. 1080P games will display as 1080i
Is this true? - bloodylip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the 360's expectations to sell 4 million through November and December? Selling half of that is hardly meeting expectations.
