- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -14/+49This seems WAY too high to me.
We're talking about games that go back as far as the original NES, right? (Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros, etc.). Given that, I'd use the iTunes model -- $0.99 per game. It's so easy to download and play these games with MAME that I really doubt you'll get anyone other than the die-hard fanboys to pay $10 for a rehash of your 17 year old games... - halfcockedjack, on 10/12/2007, -8/+41I'm thinking a Wii purchase is starting to look more and more likely
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38At that price might buy two. If they were about half that, I'd probably buy a lot more. We'll see.
- zachgc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I'd pay $5-$10 for Ocarina of Time, but I'll be damned if I pay $5-$10 for Duck Hunt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32 5$ and 10$ are for the NEW original Wii games developed by small 3 person teams.
http://digg.com/gaming/4$_Original_WII_Games_ - SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24And of course for us English people, that'll be £10 ($20) instead of the £5 it should be...

A lot of people really like the old classic NES console games better than most current games, myself included. I'm sure that I'm not the only person planning on buying a Wii mainly to be able to play these old games on a real console, without having to buy used cartridges off of ebay for about the same price.
True, it is easier to download the ROM, but playing on a PC based emulator just isn't the same as sitting on the couch, in front of the tv playing it the way it was meant to be played.
Some of the new Wii games look interesting, but I'm mainly interested in the classic console games. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Added to block list. :)
- middleman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Still for that price I wouldn't doubt that people will eat up the old games.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17They are going to make absolutely insane amounts of money with this.
- MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I doubt it'd happen, but they should bundle the original SMB with the Wii. Otherwise I think some people (mostly the younger ones who have never played NES) might ignore the virtual console.
- ReRush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14$5 = Pretty good. :)
$1-2 for NES/SNES would pwn. - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Never even hinted at. People just made the assumption.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I'd like to see a $1, $5, $10 pricing scheme for NES, SNES, and N64, respectively, myself.
Either that, or make the $10 games game BUNDLES.
e.g. $5 for Mario 3, or $10 for Mario 1, 2, Lost Levels, and 3. - chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11 While the price is in the acceptable range, I really wish it would be lower for older games. I can understand paying $5-10 for N64 games but not old NES games. And comparing the price point to GBA retro games is not very accurate. I haven't bought any retro grames for the GBA because they are priced that high (although $20 is acceptable for real classics like SMB3). With GBA games you are also paying for the novelty of playing them wherever you want since they are portable.
A better comparison would be to the Namco museum console titles which let you play 5-10 classic games for $20. Paying $5 for a essentially an unchanged ROM just seems a little to much for me, unless they were classic games like zelda or metroid. Paying that much for other not-as-good games just won't cut it. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I went to the gas station and thought that my tank of gas was going to be free. It was a wild ride out of town, let me tell you.
- KilgoreCarp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Blow in cartridge, blow in console, repeat 2-3 times, hit top of console, play game.
- SniperSlap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'm getting so sick of Nintendo using their previous titles as crutches for a lack of overall new ideas.
Some things are really neat, like adding new dynamics to old games. FF3 will do this, Tetris DS does this, New Mario for DS does this, heck, a whole Nintendo DS does this! You're getting a twist and a grphics upgrade in the deal.
Those remake games that are little more than a re-kiddiefication. of a potentially cool badass game, or a carbon copy even....Get them out of my face.
I already paid you for them in 1989. Why the f!nk am I supposed to shell out again? Convinience? I bought your console, what better than to advertise an at-release offering of "ALL YOUR OLD GAMES!". At least offer to give people credit for the other re-releases they've bought before. We're 4-deep in re-releases and you're going to be doing it over and over again because people are stupid.
I feel sorry for those who bought Mario, Mario World, Mario All Stars, Mario Advance, yaddy yadda...
In the end, I think this feature should be free. Except for the newly made downloadable titles - that's a great idea! I can't wait to see free offerings come up too. I can already think of a bunch things to do...
Critisizms aside, I hope that I'll be able to download games I buy/get to my DS and I hope that people will be able to release new big titles not just for the Wii, but also the DS. I'd like to see this have some flexibility, maybe 2 player NES games between a Wii player and a DS player, or two DS players...who knows....I'd like to see this become a distribution channel for integration. Not just one-shot get rich quick basement productions....... - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13that's reasonable.
- drinkGreen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I can imagine when it comes to pay day for people who own multiple consoles.
"Lets see, do I want to buy [INSERT LATEST XBOX360 TITLE HERE], or do I want to buy 10 of my old Nintendo favorites?" - b-dizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Umm, the average person doesn't even know what a RAR is. Sure, my friends can download and play SNES games on their computer (well, at least some of them). But that doesn't mean my grandpa can. Or my sister can. I mean, "the average person" could download a crapload of CDs, but iTunes seems to be doing a brisk business.
And I wouldn't necessarily trust this stuff. These days, if it's not on Nintendo's press site or on store shelves, I don't trust it. Personally, I'd pay $1.99 at the most for NES, $3-5 for SNES/Genesis, and probably $7-10 for N64 and new indie games. If you think about it, that's 6-30 entertaining games for the price of one 360 game. - sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Put it this way, $5 for a classic game is less than it costs to buy most of the sh*ty games for my cellphone.
- MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You can probably buy a NES and these games for less than that.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Not sure why you are being modded down. The article doesn't directly mention if this $5-10 price point for downloadable games is for classics or new games. It INFERS that they are for classics, but doesn't say it outright. When dealing with translations, it's generally difficult to infer something. The headline is based on that inference, and therefor slightly inaccurate.
Iwata has said that there will be new games developed for the VC, so this announcement could easily be for that, or for classics, or for both. Still too early to say for sure. - s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5my memory might be shot... but wasn't it said that Nintendo's back catalog would be free?
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13Thanks to XBLA for setting the $5-10 price range for these types of games?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6And this is how Nintendo will rip you guys off...
lol a 115k file will cost you guys 10 bucks... - kernelhappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6First off I have no problem with that pricing scheme to buy a copy of the game for the virtual console. That said, can I mail them my old cartridges and they give me a free virtual license or charge a significantly smaller fee since I already licensed the game once and just need to change the media?
For everyone pointing out that you can play on a emulator on a PC but it not being quite the same, you can always use a HTPC or a hacked Xbox and some emulators, I'd also recommend running Xbox Media Center and really get some use out of that xbox. - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How would that work at all? It doesn't make any sense all. The control scheme is COMPLETELY different. 0 chance there will be DS gams on the Wii.
- mhockey14221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yay for Ctrl-V!
- DyneGhaleon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4While there are some classics on the older systems they are few and far between. It has been my experience that older games just don't hold up as new games that I have become accustomed to. I'm often left with the feeling, "why the hell did I spend so much time playing this game back in the day." Time tends to gloss over the bad parts. Its like family reunions, it's been 5 years since the last one and you're really looking forward to going. Then 30 minutes into it you're like wtf this sucks.
Besides NES and SNES emulators for PS2 are amazing... 500 games for NES and 500 games for SNES by Nintendo's rational would be 5,000 bucks... Yeah, that's reasonable... - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dunno why my previous comment was modded down, but I was right. Here is another article which looks to have translated the interview more accurately: http://www.n-sider.com/newsview.php?type=story&storyid=2216
The $5-10 pricing is for ORIGINAL GAMES, not retro/classic titles. - kylemax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ever hear of GreaseMonkey?
- soundsofreason, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6My confidence in Nintendo is growing. Nice to dust that feeling off after a handful of years.
Let the Nintendo golden age begin again.
Here's to Nintendo.
Cheers - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4People who take care of their old systems aren't exactly going to be rushing to give Nintendo their credit card number. At that price they better allow you to make backup colpies onto thumb drives, CD+/-R, etc...
- aiwha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, you just stack two TVs on top of each other. Point the Wii remote at the bottom one, pretend it's a stylus, you now have one big ass DS.
- projektmayhem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3more expensive then i thought. remember, downloading emulators and ROMs are free, and nintendo will have to offer something with these classic games to entice people away from their PC versions
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No No No No!! This is not right, it's not the classic games he was talking about here. Please people look into these things better. Classic knee-jerk internet response.
"Lastly, the Nintendo president focused on pricing for Virtual Console, Wii's classic game download service. "We'd like people to play new, low-scale games for 500 yen or 1,000 yen," Iwata stated. Using current exchange rates, Iwata's expected price falls between $4.50 and $8.99 USD. The price range provided applies to new software created for Virtual Console, but Iwata did not specify if existing classic titles would be subject to the same price umbrella."
-- TheWiire.com - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Well, there is no way I will buy old games for even $5. I have many old games and anyone that I don't have I have already downloaded for free. I'm sure others will buy these old games but I won't unless they were like 99 cents or something.
- EvlD99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ Rosewood
Even new indie (not retro) Xbox Live Arcade games are $4-6. e.g., Geometry Wars, Wik, and that Marble game. - megashaun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Considering you can find many NES cartridges around the dollar mark, this would only be worth it for rarer titles. Personally, I'd rather have the original carts, though.
- jayfarer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was really hoping for $2 or $3. I imagined logging onto it the first day and re-enacting some virtual supermarket sweep.
Oh well. Still cheaper than their GBA rereleases, I guess. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Geez, half these games have been ported to Flash.
- shadedream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All I hear is "wah wah wah"...
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They need to be free if you own the original game, otherwse this isn't backwards compatible at all.
Way to high priced, I figured more like $.25-$.50 per NES game (you can get them free online...), and around $.75 for SNES games, $1-$2 for n64, and $.25-$3 for new games... (AFTER ALL, the Wii only emulates teh system, and doesn't have the same experience).... Free if you have the serial on teh game.
Also, if n64 games are big (they should be around what, 256 mb??? Mario 64 has a big rendered world) then you gonna pay through the ass for storage, since the wii only has a measly 512 mb with no HD. - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Face it, people are interested in the Wii.
- PicklePower, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Original article translated:

If I want to play Super Mario Kart and just Super Mario Kart, why should I pay $10 a month for that game? It would be stupid. Anyways, they've confirmed the games will be for sale per game, not subs style.
- yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+210bux says they will be porting open source emulators to the Wii.
