- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53Web 3.0 is the gestural web? My god, think of the porn.
- Bostonsox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32I'll sum up the article for the lazy.
Nintendo Wii is using Opera, any questions?
Yes, is......

Ok well....
Later date
and um....
I can't reveal that.
Oh and add lots of useless adjectives about how great Nintendo is going to be
I trust Nintendo but don't expect anything interesting from them until we get closer to launch. - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Surely, digg will need to implement a gestural digging mechanism.
- zachgc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19@Bloodjunky:
As the great Dr. Cox said: "I'm fairly sure if they took porn off the internet, there'd only be one website left, and it'd be called "Bring back the porn!" - Mostyn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Waving and jumping at the digg page brings a whole new meaning to tagging!
Oh - I know - could they make a fly-swat action for the wand to give us the ability to swat the spam! - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23opera mouse gestures + wii controller == omg..
- Lackadaisy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The guy was fairly tight-lipped unfortunately. But this does sound pretty promising. Opera's rendering engine is still the best out there IMHO, and one of the few that passes Acid2. I think the guys at Opera are creative enough to come up with some really neat uses for the wiimote. This is just another reason to start saving.
Hmmm, I sound rather like a fanboy here. Do I sound like a fanboy? Very well then, I sound like a fanboy. I am large. I contain multitudes. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Web 3.0 finally arrives beyotches!
Seriously though, I'm very interested to see just how the browsing will work, and how input will work. Also I hope we get support like javascript, a flash player, quicktime, etc. If we don't have the standard stuff like that, it might be pretty useless. - FinalEpsilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I found
"Nintendo has not yet announced how Opera will be available on Wii, but I can confirm that it will not be sold as a separate item, as it is for Nintendo DS."
To be the only information worthwhile on the page. - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Gives a new meaning to "point and click."
- davidro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6While I'll enjoy browsing my favorite websites on the couch, Opera on the Wii doesn't provide a huge advantage (I could just go into the computer room. That chair is pretty comfy too.) I'm much more interested in Opera for the DS being released here in the States. I wish the interviewer had asked about that, though there was an 80% of "no comment" anyway.
- jaijai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Somehow browsing the web at 480p doesn't seem so appealing given competing appliances nearby like a desktop or laptop. Likewise, I'm interested in browsing on my DS since it's a small, cheap, mobile device with touchscreen.
- IClavdivs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I believe that Web technology will increasingly be a part of the gaming experience, whether it's live content being pushed onto games or you're just checking your Web mail while playing Mario Kart."
Wow this guy is really good at Mario Kart. If I get distracted for even a second, It's down to the eternal depths of Star Road for me. - oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"could this be anymore useless?"
it could not exist
that'd be more useless - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Negative. Nintendo want to see the colour of your money in return for the browser.
- typobox43, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4From what I have seen, the Wii will not be able to play DVDs out of the box, but a separate adapter (maybe just a simple dongle) will allow DVD playback. I can't remember where I saw this, but I'm fairly sure it's the most recent official word.
- purezero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The front flap is just for SD cards.
And if you want to use a keyboard/mouse, just use the USB port. - howie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The connection won't be faster because of Opera, but the program itself can be fast. As in, the user interface is responsive, time-saving features, etc.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If Adobemedia actually decides to support those features.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11opera mouse gestures + wii controller + pr0n == (my feeble human brain cannot compute)
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article deosn't reveal that much. I was hoping for screen shots.. something. Anyhow Opera has never failed us yet. I'm sure they will max out the experience of browsing on the Wii within the limitations of the Wii.
Might I also add - for some people this may be the cheapest "Computer" for those who think of a computer as simply access to a browser and webpages. Back in the Dreamcast days I didnt own a computer. That was a big seller at the time for me having access to a browser! - 83457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds like it might be integrated with the Wii system--preinstalled and accessible at anytime.
"Nintendo has not yet announced how Opera will be available on Wii, but I can confirm that it will not be sold as a separate item, as it is for Nintendo DS."
"I believe that Web technology will increasingly be a part of the gaming experience, whether it's live content being pushed onto games or you're just checking your Web mail while playing Mario Kart." - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What they should have is the ability to surf _while_ playing a game. Kinda like how the 360 guide is in-game.
Cause this brings back memories of the Dreamcast browser. When everything is said and done, and hype/innovations are out of the way, are people really going to be using this to surf the web regularly? - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't be silly, the Wiimote will control a pointer on the screen. Just like it does in most Wii games. Of course, in games the pointer is not ususally visible.
- innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5to zetsurin: didnt know it was on the PS3 and the xbox360 too
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Launch is only a couple more months away :D
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's wrong with SD sticks? It's better than having some strange new peripheral, and they're compatible with lots of things, making it easy to turn anything with an SD port into a media player. Does Nintendo still have that promotion deal with Panasonic?
- gavroche, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This would be cool iof it had an HD output
- BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They had stated that the DS version was gonna be released in Japan something in June but there has been no word about it since.
What happened? - 83457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd still use my Dreamcast browser occasionally and would still be playing some online games (the couple that are still available according to onlineconsoles.com) if I had bought the broadband accessory before it was discontinued.
- Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"IGN Wii: Will Opera for Wii enable tabbed browsing, integrated search functions and voice command support?
Scott Hedrick: I'm unable to comment on that at this time."
This line pretty much confirms for me that Nintendo is including a microphone in the controller. I can just picture IGN staring to say "Will Opera for Wii enable tabbed browsing, integrated search functions...", the Opera guy waiting for him to finish to say "Yes, the amazing Opera browser will be able to do all of that!", until they say "voice command", and he's like "*****...NDA...uh....NO COMMENT." - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4> Considering that the DS would allow me to browse the web as it is normally.
So... normally... you need to scroll 5x across the screen to actually read everything?? - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Opera promises a fast browsing experience no matter the device"
I find it hard to be live a fast Internet experience on dial-up, or a cell phone. That comment by them makes little sense, because the browsing speed for the most part isn't the browser, but the machine and the Internet speed. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Also I hope we get support like javascript, a flash player, quicktime, etc. If we don't have the standard stuff like that, it might be pretty useless."
Without those Internet technologies, MySpace would be pretty much useless. Isn't that an Internet we can all live with? - jedipimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3a while back nintendo licenced some companies handwriting recognition software for use with the DS has anyone considered maybe it could be used for the wii so you could write URL's perhaps, it would be slightly clumsy i think, in my mind it seems so atleast but it might be interesting
- Spastastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hmm. Anyone else think that all the mystery surrounding the supposed front flap might be covering up possible ps/2 ports for for a keyboard and mouse?
- palmito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2no need for ps/2 !! just use bt mouse or keyboard. so the front flap might hide something else
- bageloid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Games utilize a proprietary solid state flash card format resembling the memory cards used in other portable electronic devices such as digital cameras; this semiconductor technology is said to be far cheaper than conventional cartridges and can be used within a system without moving parts to jar out of place when dropped. It is currently supporting cards up to 1 gigabit (~128 MB) in size. These cards weigh around 3.5 grams (1/8 ounces)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS - rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Considering that I could do it at a place other than my house, horizontal scrolling is a great compensation.
By normally I mean accessing the sites the way it is on my computer. - devolve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What I can't seem to find any information about is wether I can use Wii as a DVD-player or not.
The Opera thing is quite nifty, but entering URLs? - LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2PS3's browser isn't going to be Opera, and Opera beats out any browser (minus extensions) on any computer. Besides, PS3's control system wouldn't be good for a browser anyway.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"there is no reason for it to not support higher resolution for something like web browsing."
That's my hope as well, although I'm not sure how likely it is. The Wii has to support at least component outputs which could easily support higher resolutions. I'm not sure about the graphics chip but it seems entirely possible it could support higher 2D resolutions as well. Heck, my computer in '95 would only play games at 320x240 but still supported desktop resolutions of up to 1024x768. Even 800x??? would be a big improvement. - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2why the hell would they use sd cards? Please tell me thats not the Wii's "Memory Stick"....
- kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I wonder if Nintendo is already working on a system of "signs" using the Wiimote to input alphanumerics, something analogous to Graffiti in the Palm Pilot.
Hey, here's another idea for a Wii game: Be a Baseball Managers! You act as the manager, giving hand signals to your players on the field by waving the Wiimote. - ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The real question is: how does the pr0n look at 480p?
- ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My god...is your period key broken? Try completing a sentence!
- bageloid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The DS game carts have 128 MB of space, more than enough for web browsing.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well, I don't know why I'd use the Wii to browse the web... Sure it'll be on my home network, but that'd be for the virtual console and all that fun stuff. Why would I use the Wii when I have a computer 2 feet away?
Oh, and anyone curious, I reserved my copy of Red Steel the other day at a local Game Stop, and apparently the games are keeping the $50-at-release price which the other next-gens are leaving behind for $60. - commyostrich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1a usb mouse and keyboard wouldn't be good for surfing the web? jeez, I've had it wrong all along then.
and for that matter, to get the full Wii experience I should go bust out my old 640x480 monitor and surf the web with Opera on my 700mhz pentium 3 with 88megs of ram with the Nintendo Powerglove attached via USB. good idea.
And personally, I choose Firefox. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4What type of memory is that? RAM? ROM? FLASH?
