- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I won't buy buying it if it costs Wii points. I've got a browser on my notebook, a browser on my desktop, one on my phone and the free one that ships with the PS3. I don't need to fork over points I could use to buy VC games for yet another browser.
- jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23The browser will be free FOREVER if you download it before June. That's all you have to do, and then you may redownload it as many times as you wish.
If you don't manage to download it at least once before then, then it will cost you 500 points. This has been stated time and time again by Nintendo, but no one seems to get it.
For example, if you have downloaded the beta already, you get the final free. Forever. - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21it'll be $5. Still not a bad price to pay for a third party developed app. Opera has to recoup somehow, and they aren't puttin ads at the top this time
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Can you and the other Topic Nazis please shut the ***** up.
- kickcows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16one word:
tabs.
i hope they use those in the final version. - cam503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16According to the press release, the final version of the Opera web browser will debut in April and remain free until the end of June. After that, it will cost 500 Wii Points to download.
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Good luck wishing for Flash 9 when Adobe refuses to port it.
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16evilTak:
That worked well for Sony. - AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I am liking the new features, and I hope to god that it is still a free download when it comes out! :)
- bittermang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I thought the final word was it wasn't going to be here and "final" until June anyway? How is April a delay?
I'm living in a constant time warp with all of these announced product dates/delays/speculated product dates/speculated delays for speculated dates. - bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10All I want is flash version 9 and proper viewing in 16:9 format...Oh and the ability to save files to the Wii's flash card.
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12LOL. Good luck browsing on the PS3. Even Sony says that the PS3 browser is lame. Why oh why did they hire the same guys who created the useless PSP browser to do the PS3 browser? Everyone knows that Opera is what you go for if you want a proper mobile/device browser.
Anyway, browsing is pretty bad without a pointer or stylus, so PS3 browsing is generally a pain. - Sun.Surfin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sir Troll,
The Wii is a **game** console, and this **news** article is about a soon to be available updated feature of that **game** console. Therefore, I think it works fine in the gaming news section ;) - cam503, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@freetyme:
Yeah, because $30 for a console web browser is justifiable, right? - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Better to wait for a final version than be impatient and get something unfinished.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Opera is doing the browser development. Nintendo did not divert resources away from online gaming for it.
- Ray301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'll add another word....
KEYBOARD!
I love the wii browser, use it all the time... but without a keyboard it'll never get any serious uses. - aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, its free for me. I feel bad for my friends that still can't get a Wii due to availability. Hopefully they'll get one before June.
The beta works like a charm for me. The only problem I've had is it's extremely slow (in terms of starting up) when I want to watch a 2 hour movie online. Also, for watching movies online, they should allow you to turn off the bottom control bar, or have it autohide after a certain amount of time. - TheRealDj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have to go with 1up on this one, to get youtube to work properly all the time would be a nice start for the browser.
- TrueJournals, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Weird... the Nintendo customer service site, http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/channelsInternet.jsp, changed the release month to April... but wrongly left the release year as 2006...
- jaywatts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm glad I'm not the only person wanting proper viewing in 16:9 format. I would love to use the browser more but only filling up part of the screen just doesn't look that good on my 52" widescreen. You think they would have though of something this simple ahead of time but oh well.
- stucktildekey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Some features I'd like to see:
+ Tabbed browsing
+ Page scaling based on resolution
+ Ad blocking
+ Keyboard attachment for the Wiimote
+ Flash 9 and JRE support
+ Customizable interface
Until some of these features are implemented, the Wii browser won't receive any acclaim, other than the fact that it's easy to use in bed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10bottom line: opera rocks
- netMASA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have an article on my site that lists the new additions to the browser:
http://gamespotting.net/gameblog/420 - adhd123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I hope it includes widescreen support for the "large text view" (hit 2 on the wiimote) which only uses the standard 4:3 area of the TV right now.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's free as long as you download it before the end of June.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The June date is for when they will begin charing 500 Wii Points. March has always been the date for the release of the non-beta version.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7You don't have a browser anywhere else?
You're posting this with your *mind*? Now THAT'S worth spending points on. - adhd123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wired has an article up also:
http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/03/wii_browser_fea.html - SoulRebel23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They need to make it so you can have a different cursor besides the big finger. It really makes flash games hard to play. Some sort of text magnifier would be cool too.
- freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@cam503- No sorry just thought that because of the cost of the DS browser.
- wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4While the browser was cool to play around with, I do not see the point of buying the browser when I have 2 computers and a laptop 10 feet away from were I keep my Wii
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3To show off to friends at parties? Who cares, it's free.
- AZNundercover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As long they update it to Flash 9 I'm cool with the delay.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I've played with it..its a cool idea, but I'd rather Nintendo focused on other aspects of their online stuff-the browser is the least interesting aspect of it, to me.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they allow the option of leaving the zoom on when I go from page to page. It's annoying to have to zoom in again every time I click a link. Keep it at the current zoom level, and let me zoom out on the subsequent page if I want to.
- imborden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We are constantly on the computer i my house, and when I can't get on the wii browser is perfect for me. I can't wait til aimonwii.com starts up so i can use that in a tab. I just hope there will be keyboard support.
- hanzo87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was pretty skeptical when I first tried the Opera beta on the Wii, but after playing around with it for a bit I got the hang of it. Not to mention, those Keyra vids on youtube look much better on a 52" screen!
- BillDoE, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Fair trade? Prolly so, but lets have some updates and let us in on the fun/beta testing ;)
- thewerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera = Norway ... Only good things comes from Norway .. and yes we apologize for A-ha, Röyksopp and all that *****! :P
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yes. A fair trade. End of story.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Why was my comment dugg down? He said he would not buy it if it cost anything. I pointed out that it's free until sometime in June, which is an accurate statement.
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What's different is that Opera knows how to do these things.
- theGOG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Honestly, would you use it any more frequently once the full version was released? Maybe I'd use it a bit for a couple days, then I'd just forget about it. After that, the only reason I'd use it would be if I wanted to go on the internet when my sister was using the computer.
- JoeHeavyFlow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Replace the word Opera with Oprah and his article takes on a whole new meaning.
- Rosstafari, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Sigh. How many times has the "internet on your TV" thing been tried before? I don't see Nintendo creating anything different with the Opera browser that hasn't been done before (except for switching out the keyboard for a remote, making text entry that much harder). I wonder if this will ever be much more than a novelty -- I've been getting a lot more use out of the Vote channel than the browser, which isn't saying much.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Yeah, but I don't, so I will be spending points on this.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Any price they want to charge is justifiable. Whether you want to pay it is up to you.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Fie dallah! Fie dallah!
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2But seriously, how hard is it to post to the right topic? Is it really that ***** complex?
Everyone else seems to manage - so howcome not a SINGLE wii article is ever posted to the right topic?
Does IQ just nosedive the second someone gets a wiimote in their hands?
OK, I get it - the reason every single Wii article in Gaming News is offtopic is because there ARE NO gaming news to post for the Wii.
Fair enough. But that doesn't justify posting off-topic just for the sake of keeping the hype alive! -
