- Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -6/+152It's not about looks this time, it's about gameplay.
One company sacrifices graphics for gameplay, the other two gofor astounding visuals and traditional controllers. - Paktu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+103I love lamp
- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+92Exercise? Using the Wii would probably only exercise one arm. And there's already a popular activity that only exercises one arm, if you know what I mean...
And I think you know what I mean...
Bowling. - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+89Yeah it's all about power NOT game play..that's why the PSP outsold the DS.
no wait... - bpwwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+87I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion.. but you've just proven that opinions can be straight up, flat out WRONG.
- Catachresis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+80"Wii has no horse power and no high def capabilties which will mean it will look crap on a large display."
Agreed. I mean, think about all those terrible, underpowered, non-HD games that we had to put up with during the Dark Ages of gaming. Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Ocarina Of Time, Resident Evil 4, GTA San Andreas, Half-Life, Final Fantasy VII, Halo - all low-definition rubbish that looks crap on a large display! I've actually thrown away my PS2 and Gamecube. I mean, they aren't Hi-Def, and they have no "horsepower".
Get a grip, will you? When was the last time you enjoyed a videogame, instead of sitting back and being bored while it spunked a million teraflops of graphics onto your face? - Paktu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+66"Wii has no horse power and no high def capabilties which will mean it will look crap on a large display."
Look at the history of consoles. It's never been who has the best hardware, otherwise we'd all be playing on a 3DO right now (remember that? didn't think so...) - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+64It seems like the PS2 has always had the majority of the japanese style games (seeing as how it completely dominated japan and all...). But some of the best games I've played this generation are "japanese" games. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were amazing. Kingdom Hearts (the first, not the second) was surprisingly good. Katamari is downright fun. If that's what you're talking about when you say the Wii will have all the japanese games, then I welcome it!
And if you truly don't like those kinds of games, the 360 has all the sports and explosions a man can ask for. - sych0, on 10/12/2007, -9/+60I love nintendo.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48You don't have to swing your whole arm. Reports seem to indiacte that the games can be controlled with flicks of the wrist.
That being said, you realize you don't HAVE to play video games all day long, right? Take a break, man! - Albaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Duh, I don't have an HD screen, nor with my current "for geek stuff" budget of around $175/month I will be able to afford one in... how much? 5 years until the manufacturers lower the prices? And I'd feel like an idiot if I'd get a loan to buy one, too...
For $175, in the other hand, if I save a bit, I will be able to buy a Wii when it comes out, instead of waiting for two-three years till Sony or Microsoft lower the prices, either.
For me it's not only a matter of graphics or gameplay, it's also about economics. - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34"Japanese games" is a bit of a misnomer, since a lot of Japanese companies make games specifically for the American (and/or European) market. I'm talking about Japanese-made games that sell well over here, but don't do well in Japan.
Some examples off the top of my head:
* Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission, and Prime(s)
* Super Monkey Ball series
* Soul Calibur 2
* Crazy Taxi
* Dead Rising (probably)
* the entire damn Sonic franchise - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -12/+39"One company sacrifices graphics for gameplay, the other two gofor astounding visuals and traditional controllers."
I swear if I hear this one more time I think my head will explode. Repeat after me... Good graphics do NOT mean bad gameplay!
Yes, good graphics don't mean GOOD gameplay, but they're also not contradictory to it. The "Wii may not look great, but it'll be fun. The PS3/360 games look great but they're sacrificing fun" thing is a straw man. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30I love bowling.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24"The wii is graphically superior to the PS2? I heard it was about 1.5 times as good as gamecube, and gamecube wasn't even close to PS2."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. That's cute. The PS2 is EASILY the least powerful of all the current gen hardware. The Xbox hedged out the GC as the most powerful by a bit, although the last round of GC games certainly give anything the XBox has a run for it's money (RE4, Zelda).
And also, the Wii is 2-3x more powerful than a GC, according to Nintendo, so we should see some pretty decent eye candy, though not what the 360 is delivering and the PS3 is promising. - treed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25See, RSI stands for Repetitive Stress Injury. The keyword there is "repetitive". With the range of motion, you probably won't be repeating the same exact motions all that much, at least no more than you would with any normal controller. I bet we're all going to have RSI in our thumbs in 20 years.
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Super, wonderful, great.
Now if Nintendo would just get off their butts and confirm a launch date and price so I can pre-order it, I'd be happy. Telling me how cool it is or how many games will be available at this point only serves to prolong the suffering. - NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21O_o... dono what he's on... but Nintendo games are known for their quality.
At least... AT LEAST 85% of gamers out there, dont really care about HD, because they can't afford HDTVs... Even if the number of HDTV owners out there, increases over the next 5 years... it still wont break 50%, most people dont buy a new TV unless the old one is breaking or just too out of date.
Personally I can't get an HD TV until they are no more than 1.5 times the cost of current TVs of the same screen.
But then again, as many have said, many times before. The graphics really wont matter this next generation. Any improvement over this last gen will still look wonderful, and for those without HDTV's the difference between HD and SD Wii graphics wont be all that noticeable.
Graphics have absolutly no baring on how fun a game is anymore. Fun Gameplay > Cool Graphics. Period. These days this is certainly true, even if maybe it wasn't in previous generations, it is now, and will be forever. Graphics wont be taking many more large leaps anymore as games get more and more photo realistic, the only real improvements are in minor detailing, or lighting.
Good Graphics do not equal quality games... Good gameplay does, and in the end thats left up to the developers. And Nintendo has always been experts at making games fun! - kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Funny how that works, eh? They have you hooked and looking for your fix, even before you have your first hit. Nintendo = best drug dealers ever.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Dear Mr Sony Fan,
We know you have something against the Wii, and that's fine. But please, if you're going to take pot-shots, at least get your facts right. Read the article. 27 titles is pretty massive compared to just about every other console launch ever. - YURiLOVER, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Yes of course. mario party, double dash, SSBM, Killer 7, Madden 05 and 06, all were Fantasy's, Anime, and Manga based. Tell me how many anime games for the PS2 you can find on PlayAsia.com or even Liksang.com? Message me back once you're done counting, which I bet will be sometime around next year.
- Foor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21So many good games not to mention the fact that you can buy a Wii and about 7 games for the cost of the PS3 with no games.
*Tear for the PS fanboys* - Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18So, by that logic, all baseball players would get RSI? Let's think before we write, eh? I know this is Digg, but we can give it a shot.
- spengy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Am I the only one excited about the Metal Slug anthology?
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Wii sports has to be bundled. It'd be the perfect introduction to the system because everyon'e familiar with the real life motions. Also, I think at the rumored $229, it's quite possible.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Wii Sports is rumored to be the title included with the system. I agree that it would be low on my list to buy, but I think it could be a great game to show off the flexibility of the new controller.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16your right, it is about Quality and you're still maintaining the assumption that Quality refers to Graphics capability. Quality, in Nintendo's case, refers to gameplay and total enjoyability(if thats a word), not Raytraced 1080i Graphics running at 60+ FPS.
The Wiimote will provide the backbone for, IMO, the clear victor in the 360/PS3/Wii console race, and the Wiimote is just one part of the Wii's experience. The Virtual console will become the iTunes of the gaming industry to a Degree that Live! Arcade would not be a ble to compete with.
As i have for each past Generation, I'll be getting all three consoles, I already have the 360, but I will bet good money that my PS3 and 360 will be collecting a lot more dust than my Wii. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Wow, what a great list. No-one can accuse the Wii of being 'kiddie' anymore. Look at some of those titles... Metroid. Far Cry. Call of Duty. Need for Speed. There's fewer 'kiddie' titles on there than more 'mature' titles.
Of course, I'm using quotes around 'kiddie' and 'mature' because I think that's a load of crap anyway, what people mean when they say kiddie is all-out-fun as opposed to all-out-guns. But anyway, people can't say it anymore! - Fluidity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I would think the repetative motions of typing and button pressing are much more at risk of giving you rsi. Waving the controller around won't be too bad, even if it's fairly repeatable. I haven't read about orchestral conductors getting RSI but I guess it may have happened, bigger movements, in general are a lot less likely to cause RSI. Waving the controller around might actually help build the muscles in your arm more than anything!
- Farodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@nreynolds
look up the stats on the last 3 systems:
XBOX - 733MHz Graphics - 256 bit, 233 MHz Mem - 64MB
GameCube - 485MHz Graphics - 128 bit, 162 MHz Mem - 40MB
Plastation2 - 295MHz Graphics - 128 bit, 150 MHz Mem - 40MB
there are some great looking games for the GameCube. Ones that look better than almost all PS2 games. Just becasue the developers took more advantage of the PS2 then GameCube doesn't mean one is weaker than the other. - McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17bowling is what you guys call it?
- ArrEmmDee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"* Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission, and Prime(s)"
Pretty sure the Metroid series is developed by an American studio now. - skoda, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19The Wii could actually cure the epidemic of obesity spreading throughtout the developed world.. Kids will be playing games for hours still, but they'll actually be getting exercise at the same time! Also, I can see 'get fit' games coming out for it, which will get the parents involved more.
I think Wii has a chance to outsell both 360 and PS3, partly because of the price. How many parents are going to buy a PS3 for their kids at Christmas when they can get a Wii for half the price, and they can play on it *with* their kids? It's going to bring families together again!
Nice one Nintendo, I'll be getting one :) - LucerinRed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14you know, if anything, its almost too much. I feel sad for games that will get lost in the shadows of Zelda and such.

Rent, Low chance to Buy - Wii Sports - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Thank you Digg. This brief Wii article has given me something positive to think of today. sometime within the next 3 months, it will be mine!
I just need to decide on what titles to get. In my experience, acquiring more than 1 or 2 games at a time means most of them will get ignored. So to start, probably Wii Sports (looks like a good party game?) and Zelda.
Then metroid, and who knows what else.
Sorry for the ramble, I'll understand being burried :) - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Ya, but I usually use the other arm for uuhh.... bowling....
so it'll even out... - ConkerBFD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I really hope Wii Sports is bundled. Besides being a great "intro" game for getting familiar with the controller. Would Wii Sports be a strong enough game to sell on its own? Frankly, I don't think so.
In all honesty, if Wii Sports isn't included, I'd pass on it in hopes they will make a new Mario Tennis and a new Mario Baseball. - smazany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Wow, Nintendo is only contributing three titles to launch! Damn, Nintendo is really tipping there hats to the third-parties and letting them run the launch. This is great news, because this is an indication of great third-party support for the Wii.
- darkmule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Lets take a bit of a look, Mr. "Quality", at who the Publishers are.
THQ(3), UbiSoft(7), Midway(1), Activision(3), Atari(1), Square Enix(2), Konami(1), Nintendo(4), SNK(1), EA(2), Sega(1), Atlus(1).
So we have 12 Publishers, publishing (not always meaning they are *developing* but publishing) 27 different games in total. I wont disagree, that 27 is quite a large round number. But you speak of this quality thing, and that things should not be rushed. From the looks of this spread, things are not being rushed, this is a very large diverse group of publishers. The Development/Publisher for the Wii console, is amazing, and this proves that as well. (Though the 7 from Ubisoft is quite crazy, I think they got a tad bit excited).
I also want to restate that a Publisher, is just a publisher, anyone group of developers (owned, or not owned) by the publisher could have easily created these games.
I think you are also missing the point of gaming, its not all about HD, and super quality, and shooting it out of a projector or playing it on the worlds biggest TV. Its about the game, and how the game is played. Graphics are a play in that, and beautiful graphics do have a large roll, but its not the core element. - crummer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I think that your whole comment can be disproven by the success of the graphically inferior, innovative gameplay of the DS.
When DS first came out I could have cared less about it, but now I find myself wanting one more and more. And my poor PSP doesnt get all that much play (besides import games).
I think the Wii is getting so much press BECAUSE it is so different. Thats why everyone is thinking of it as a supliment to the more graphically superior consoles. - crummer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'm really excited about the Wii launch. I dont normally enjoy sports games all that much but wii sports looks pretty fun.
Also, cant go wrong with Zelda. - mrisaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Luigi's Mansion? I don't really count that as a Mario game. But yes, I am a little disappointed, just like I was with GameCube. That being said, I think it's a good business decision on Nintendo's part. Think about it. If they released a Metroid game, Zelda game, AND Mario game at launch, they would inevitably end up cannibalizing their hardcore Nintendo fan market, as not everyone would be able to afford all three games, and honestly, I think most people would go for Twilight Princess over Mario Galaxy anyway.
- MaxFrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10you're forgetting one small thing....price. Just how many parents do you think will change their mind when they see nintendo's new system for only 230 bucks compared to the PS3's 500-600? Also, you say it's a factor of the general public, but nintendo's been around for decades. They're as much a household name as sony is.
The N64 was an okay console, could have been better. (it's still better then a psx in my opinion, but the shortage of games really hurt it) the GCN was a wonderful system that didn't get the support it needed. I'm guessing the Wii will be a sleeper hit...as in, doesn't sell a whole lot at first, then as more and more people play it, it'll start spreading like wildfire. - matariel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Absolutely not! This is right at the top of the list for me!
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm getting one.
- McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I feel bad for you friend. Unfortunately your HDTV has a poor video processor. (likely sign of a cheap tv).
A quality HDTV upscales SD signals very well. I know Sony's 51" DLP HDTV upscales quite nicely. I've played plenty of GC & xbox on it, in addition to watching SD cable. However a Westinghouse, or really most TVs (especially LCDs), that you might get for less than 1100 are going to have cheap video chips in them.
fyi: faroudja - is known as one of the better video processors in HDTVs and handles upscaling quite nicely. - Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"How many people today pay $400, $500 or more (SLI, Crossfire) just to get better graphics?"
Not very many. The vast majority of gamers don't have $500 to throw down for a purchase at one time. That is why the PS3 starting at $500 is such a problem. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10RSI is caused by repetitive movement that our body is not designed to make. Using a mouse can cause RSI because your wrist just isn't designed to move left and right like that constantly. When you click buttons, the tendons in your arm are moving backwards and forwards over each other - think of it like 2 lengths of rope, laid over each other, being pulled back and forth. They fray.
Moving your arm won't give you RSI because there is no strain. You may end up with some other sporting injury, who knows, we'll have to see. - Slyght, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15This article is inaccurate, it's assuming that all the Ubisoft titles are coming out launch day, when it's just reported as being in the "launch window", which could be as much as three months or more after launch day. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other titles on that list that haven't been confirmed for launch *day* as well.
