- thesauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23linkedist: it originally was the only way, but modchips were eventually developed.
also, the PC method worked very *****. you had to have phantasy star online and the broadband adapter. you basically had to stream the game over broadband to the network adapter. this causes tons of glitches and slowdowns. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -46/+3That reminds me:
Number Two: "And we are supposed to believe one man saying this?"
Marcus: "Yes! If it's the right man."
Mars Resistance guy: "And yeah. And what if I said I sprout wings and fly to New York? Huh?"
(others laugh)
Franklin: "In your case, I would say you are crazy. But if Sheridan said it, I'll tell him to stop off on the west side and pick me up some bagels!" - Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+86This is obviously fake, no one would want to copy and play Red Steel
- SLYK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15anyone else have the slightest clue what hawkwrench was talking about?
- Keloran, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3just a guess, but it sounds like a "Babylon 5" reference
- Software2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think hackwrench is trying to say that he won't believe it unless the president brings him some bagels.
- Zippo, on 10/28/2007, -1/+14I'm really surprised no one's cracked the Virtual Console's encryption yet or figured out a way to convert ROMs to VC games.
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Software2 judging by the names, I think he's quoting Babylon 5.
- Software2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jonnytrombone
Re-read my coment. Who is the president in B5? We get that it's a quote from Babylon 5... just nobody knows how it applies to this conversation. - JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Software2: I think I've got it! The idea is that one person says this works, so we should be skeptical (like all of the Wii Mote/Windows videos before there really were drivers). He has a semi-valid point, he just comes out sounding like a jibbering moron.
- Software2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Except this has been pretty well known for a over a month, and has been verified by many different sources, including people at digg the last time this was on the front page.
All I know is, the kid wants bagels. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It applies to this conversation thus:
The original statement was "Im almost ready to believe the wii can do anything."
It brought to my mind the "Babylon 5" reference where someone said essential that they were ready to believe that someone, Sheridan could do anything. I found it humorous and copied it here for those who could appreciate the humor in it, for those who look back on "Babylon 5" with some fondness, and for those who might have not come across the reference for some reason or another and might somehow be enlightened by exposure to it.
- matthodge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+57All this is pretty much doing is turning your PC into the ModChip.
You make a special cable which plugs into the serial port on your PC and then solder it to certain points on the Wii's DVD Drive. Then from your O/S run the program which pushes the data to the Wii DVD Drive to allow it to play burnt games.
The same proccess has to be done each time you change the game or turn off your Wii.
Not really a viable solution over a soldered in ModChip but its more steps in the right direction.- PhoenixAvatar2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+59So instead of a modchip, you have a cable sticking out the back of your Wii. Sure sounds like an improvement to me!
- Detritus, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4Yea, I have a HTPC sitting right under my Wii and I don't even feel remotely compelled to do this. I'll keep paying for games rather than solder something that Nintendo might be able to detect and ban me from online games.
- thisisnotsafeV2, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Mirror: http://duggmirror.no.tc/
- TheCod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Just so you know, he was only using the computer for the monitor. He says so in the comments if you would read.
- bigbadgoat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ Detritus
what online games?
- SolarisX, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5@Detritus
I wasnt aware online gaming was part of Nintendos strategy :-) - sparkmonkeyz, on 11/02/2007, -2/+92How come it seems that all of these people who seem to be geniuses when it comes to modding and hacking, can never operate a camera?
- onimusha115, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19agreed, all that zooming in was useless since it was out of focus.
- FierceDeityLink, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Can't really ask pirates to buy a tripod or a camera with manual focus... (broad over-generalization, I know, but when the chips only allow playing of "backups")
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8a) I'd guess many of those videos are done with a digicam instead of a videocamera, which are rather crappy at video to begin with
b) many of those videos are done single handed, by a single person (doesn't anybody have friends, brothers whatever?)
c) if they would use a tripod, everybody would scream "FAAAKKKKKEEEEE", since with a steady camera location its just way to easy to cut the video without anybody noticing
- maggot4life, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6The first rule of digg, never talk about digg.
The second rule of digg, never link to a news site.
no0b. - deviouskoopa, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Opera or Vista? The choice is yours!!
(note: question is purely rhetorical)- phaed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I choose Vista. Opera sucks big balls.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Any one else find the silence kinda creepy?
- SpaceDreamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2his PC is super-noisy
- hevnsnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Cable Instructions @ http://edge.i-hacked.com/played-wii-backups-without-modchip
(cant post here due to length) - Charron, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Fake!
Now to actually watch the video. - icepick314, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2how about modchip to make it play imports?
personally, this whole region protection thing is crappy where you can't play many games available in Japan....
one good thing PLAYSTATION 3 does have is blu-ray where US and Japanese have same coding...- Software2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ummm... that's been taken care of.
- tcwood00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3did anyone else notice that with the covers for the gamecube slots missing....the top of his Wii was still white...with only the slots being black??
mine is completely black...and looks really ugly compared to his...- hevnsnt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is because his Wii is mostly apart. Yours looks like that under that black plate as well. See http://www.metacafe.com/watch/449009/open_the_wii_says_mii/
- kickinass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2there is a thin black plastic cover held on by 3 screws. this has to be taken off to get to the screws that hold the wii together
- jrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10another solution is a homemade chip
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Chiip_the_open_source_wii_modchip - dp1984, on 10/12/2007, -50/+4they should make a chip that makes the wii fun.
- jfh214, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25@dp1984 - i dugg you down because you obviously do not know what a wii is.
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -29/+2Or he has different tastes to the games that are out for it now, mebbeh?
Would you be digging him down if he said the PS3 wasn't fun?
Freakin' Wiitards, you guys ruined the Wii for me. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Wow, you actually let other people here "ruin" something for you? That is just sad.
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Not just here.
Almsot every other website, my friends, etc - They all hype the Wii way, way out of proportion.
People can't take criticism of it either, if you bring up valid points about the failings of the system, and the current game library, people just don't want to hear it. It's infuriating. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19"Hey, Jimmy! Is that a Nintendo Wii?"
"Sure is! It's really fun!"
"AAARGGH JESUS CHRIST I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO ENJOY IT NOW ***** ***** DAMN ***** YOU RUINED IT FOR ME" - SpaceManSR, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@Klarth:
Brilliant! - phaed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pathy, you wouldn't know the difference between hype and truth if it slapped you in the face with a rubber chicken
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Dreamcast's revenge!
- MatchStick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i noticed that the game cube pannel (under the lid) in that video was white, mine's black, diferent versions perhaps?
- idandfei, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"did anyone else notice that with the covers for the gamecube slots missing....the top of his Wii was still white...with only the slots being black??
mine is completely black...and looks really ugly compared to his...
You mean like how your post is a different version of this one perhaps?
- idandfei, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"did anyone else notice that with the covers for the gamecube slots missing....the top of his Wii was still white...with only the slots being black??
- Brocclibob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I said "Im almost ready to believe the wii can do anything."
My comment wasn't meant to be a critisism. - wibblewobble, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I'm still waiting for the WII game where I have to put the Wimote down my trousers and thrust my loins to make the onscreen action happen... oh yes... WIIporn!! bring it on!
- diggerStaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Leisure Suit Larry. ;-)
http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/12/leisure-suit-larry-wii.html - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@wibblewooble
just out of curiousity which country are you are from?
- diggerStaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Leisure Suit Larry. ;-)
- Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Nothing like taping your piracy and putting it on the web under an account tied to you. Stupid ass. I hope they arrest him on principle alone.
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dugg down for paranoia.
- TheCod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Its a backup of his own game. No piracy involved.
- Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is no such thing as "Fair Use" anymore
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Well if there is a video, it must be true. We all know video's cannot be faked.
- plannters, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I prefer mods that enhance the device rather than just allow you to steal content.
- phaed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1who asked -you-?
- SpaceDreamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did he have to do that in his sauna?
All that steam is making the image constantly blurry - ohandre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Yea, I have a HTPC sitting right under my Wii and I don't even feel remotely compelled to do this. Hey smart guy, which wii games are you playing online at the moment as there are none supported. And i hope your not considering "VOTE CHANNEL" as an online game.- capran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't be insulting. Yes it's true that there's no XBOX LIVE equivalent for Wii at the present time, but it seems likely that there will be in the future. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Microsoft banned modded XBOXes from LIVE? It would be reasonable to assume that Nintendo could follow suit.
I love my Wii, it's a great system, and has plenty of potential. And, in my opinion, is the most fun of the current consoles. Sure, it's not as technically advanced, and in a couple of years I have to wonder how well it'll fare, but for now, I think it's great. I just wish there were more AAA rated titles available right now (the only one in my opinion is Zelda, and some of the VC games.)
I've looked at reviews and such for the XBOX 360 games, and there's only a handful that look interesting to me, and most titles are also available on PC, so I probably won't buy a 360 in the foreseeable future.

- PurpZeY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I saw this video last night and have been thinking about it since. Really, this is clever but impractical.
I can't imagine soldering several wires, connecting my wii to my monitor and then playing it.
Compared to just buying a game and playing it on my television -- Yeah, I'd save a few bucks but it
just seems somewhat over the top in my estimation....I'll wait for some reasonable version of a modchip,
or how about, buy my games like a responsible person who respects game developers...Just a thought.... - vfxtrev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is about as relevant as that guy who hooked up his broken iPod to a full sized hard drive so he could listen to music. Some people are just too desperate to play hacked games. Buy the damn game, and stop hooking up your Wii to the computer and using your remote as a mouse pointer. Good grief.
- phaed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1heheh that analogy was funny. But really. I'd buy one game and play it. But id rather play them all.
The model works well with PC games. I pirate them all. Try them then erase them cause they usually suck. Then comes a game that it is actually worth the money and ill buy it just to play multiplayer. - Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I guess you don't get the point here .. I already said it isn't a feasible solution. If I wanted to pirate games, I would have installed a modchip the day they were out and just downloaded them all. I made this video to show that with 3 dollars and a half hour, you can mod a Wii to play a backup. I haven't played the game more than 10 minutes to make sure the mod was working and I didn't get disc read errors. The Wii is hooked back up to the TV and playing originals still.
There is a difference between being "desperate to play hacked games" and doing a DIY mod for the sole fun of doing it. Like many of the things that I do, the end result isn't nearly as much fun as the process of hacking it in the first place.
- phaed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1heheh that analogy was funny. But really. I'd buy one game and play it. But id rather play them all.
- alefox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1another yogurt PS2 thing???
