- Braingoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29the Nintendo Wii it makes fat kids skinny, geeky kids popular... where was this thing when I was in school
could have done wonders for this fat geeky kid. - killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -17/+45...and why the ***** are "researchers" studying that? Sweet Jesus I hope my tax dollars are not funding this.
- LiquidIse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26I think you're missing something here. Kids and adults are going to play video games and many are going to dump in countless hours into games. I know my wii makes you more active, but its a surprising amount more active.
Now for a parent worried about their kid spending too much time gaming, this is a little reassurance that it isn't as terrible as it previously was. A step in the right direction if you will. No reason to get your panties in a bunch because someone actually researched this. - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27I actually replaced 2 days of cardio in my workout routine with sessions of Wii boxing. I haven't noticed a drop-off in results.
I just can't wait for a boxing game with controls that actually work, then I will use it for all my cardio.
I love this machine. - ursername180, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15WarioWare says I burn about 5000 kelories every 20 microgames... THEY LIED TO MEEEEE!
- maize, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22Captain ***** Obvious sure is busy these days...
- beckerist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+91 kelorie = 1 calorie. NOT 1 kilocalorie, which is what is generally measured on food items. therefore, you are burning approximately 1 quarter of a kilocalorie for every mini-game you play, or 5 kilocalories for every 20 games you play.
- shertzerj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+950 calories burned for a one-minute walk? Damn, you must go on some crazy walks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Burning 5 calories per 20 games, hahah.
Go for a walk. You'll probably burn 5 in the first minute. - prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well considering that each minigame only lasts 5 seconds, 20 mini games takes about a minute and a half.
- Eldorian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sadly I would, but living in extreme rural midwest the nearest gym is about 80 miles away.
- aggrazel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No kidding? Moving around is better for you than sitting sedentary? Wait till I tell the others, they'll be amazed!
- SinisterDexter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Let's see... Carry the two ::begins counting on fingers:: Drop the 5 ::gets abacus:: Ah Nothing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Unfortunately I've seen some people play the wii with no effort at all. They can sit on a couch and flick their wrist, without moving an arm.
For them, using a Wii burns about as much calories as masturbation. - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4shertzerj-

(best thing I could find on google images to illustrate my joke :P) - Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would love to see a stationary bike peripheral and game(s) come out for either 360, PS3 or Wii. Paperboy? Bike racing? Or just a game with a huge number of bike trails to explore. Rumble would be awesome too. It would probably be the most expensive peripheral since the Steel Battalion controller, but I'd sure as hell buy one!
- Methodius, on 10/12/2007, -12/+15The brick was last gen. The Xbox 360 controller is one of the sweetest pieces of gaming hardware I've ever held.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, more than you'd think. An 85 pound kid will burn about 80 calories in 2 hours doing nothing but watching TV. It takes a lot of energy to keep your body functioning. That is why people need to eat 2500 calories or so a day to maintain weight, even if they lead a fairly sedimentary lifestyle.
- Eldorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been personally working on a weight loss plan using the Nintendo Wii as one of my exercise utilities.
I plan on losing about 90 pounds in a year and a half or so. I'm finishing up the last bit of the plan and going on it by March 1. If anyone is mildly interested in any of this though, I have the link in my profile (I won't post it here) The site isn't anywhere near done yet though.
With that said, I think the Nintendo Wii could potentialy be a very good way of getting people like me off their asses and being active again. I know I haven't been as active as I like ever since I got out of college and got a desk job.. - gDubz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Riiight. So if I burn 10 calories every 20 minutes I watch TV or play Xbox, and burn 14 calories for the same 20 minutes playing Wii I should feel good about that.
Unless of course you notice that 20 minutes riding a stationary bike burns upwards of 150 calories. 1000% more than the Wii. I kinda stop seeing the Wii-advantage : - SmokeN-DC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Me and my family 4 including my self purchased a Wii 2 weeks a go (lucked in to one early on a Saturday at Best Buy) we play as a family at least 1 hour a day or more. The great thing is that activity (IE moving around more) makes you want to move around even more sitting still becomes uncomfortable after a time so you get up take the dog on a longer walk get on that unused stationary bike that has been gathering dust take the stairs at work any thing to keep moving. I in 2 week have already gone from a size 42 waist to a 40 I dont expect the change to continue like that for ever with out changing what I eat but man it has made a difference in my and my family's life.

The Dreamcast's controller was the best, you should find one -- it may suprise you. - WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just look at the title:
Playing the Wii burns more than just watching TV or playing other consoles.
....
Put some DDR on those consoles and I bet you burn more than playing the Wii.
In fact I am going to bet with my Nintendo friends on it. - heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too late, they already have "Wii Health Pack" in the works. In an interview I did with the BBC regarding my "Wii Sports Experiment" a Nintendo Rep talks about it.
I have the interview here, if you'd like to hear about the "Wii Health Pack":

I play it like I am actually boxing, you know... The way it was intended to be played. Just because you can achieve the moves with wrist flicks doesn't mean it was meant to be played that way.
If you juke, circle and throw real punches; it is almost as good of a cardio as real boxing and you don't have to get punched in the face. After a half hour of playing it full impact style, I am sweating just as much as I do from lunges, jumping jacks, running, etc.. - whatducare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank God, there is hope for our fat children yet..........
- MMXII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think it should replace exercise, but it is better than sitting on your butt all day.
- Tigerpounce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Vest Virginia is way ahead of you.
http://www.boingboing.net/2006/01/25/dance_dance_revoluti.html
As a gamer that is dedicated enough to play even though I'm sweating like a pig at Christmas, I'm fine with this. We already recognize that men and women prefer to work out differently and thus, have gyms designed with that in mind; why is it so strange that kids (and adult-gamers) enjoy workouts geared towards them? If the only way I could play WoW was with a DDR pad and the Wii controllers I'd be a size 2 before Spring Break. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.html, watching TV burns 79 calories in an hour. IF this study is right, which I doubt, that would mean that playing Wii burns 110.
For comparison...a SLOW walk (under 2 MPH) burns 160 calories. A SLOW bike ride (under 10 MPH) burns 320.
This is for a 175 pound man, so for a kid, it would be about half that. In other words, playing Wii burns about 15 more calories an hour than doing absolutely nothing. But over 100 less than doing what non-lazy kids do, which is to ride a bike.
Not to mention...if kids think that they are thirsty due to playing Wii rather than sitting doing nothing, and drink just one soda for every 10 hours of Wii they play...that calorie gain is gone. - Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I'm not sure why Methodius is getting dugg down. The 360 controller is one of the most comfortable controllers I've used. The d-pad needs work but the analog sticks are perfect. I never understood how the PS2 dualshock garnered so much praise when I found the analog sticks to be horribly inaccurate. It either didn't move at all (with slight pressure) or it shot to the other side of the screen (with slightly more pressure).
- ifman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why are some people so threatened by this?
Try strapping on wrist weights and doing batting practice for 30 minutes a day, nonstop, following by boxing with full punches.
I've lost a few pounds doing this, yeah it's not gonna get me back the days when I ran and lifted every day, but it certainly will lighten the load on my knees and back and open the door to more challenging workouts. - alteratti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2mom, wii kids don't need to go to the gym anymore..
- Calloused, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So how many calories do you burn sitting on your ass for 2 hours? 10? So if you swing your right arm for the same amount of time you will burn 4 more calories? This headline is ridiculous! America, please quit making excuses for you kids to actually go outside and get some real exercise. Sure, my kids play video games, but the toy they use for exercise it the nike+ iPod system.
- ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"even if they lead a fairly sedimentary lifestyle."
I must admit...I'm not familiar with that usage of the word "sedimentary". - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"If you juke, circle and throw real punches; it is almost as good of a cardio as real boxing and you don't have to get punched in the face"
When I train punches for a workout I'm either punching a wavemaster, a set of Muy Thai pads, or a heavy bag. The resistance of the target as you drive into it makes a huge difference in how much work you get out of it. Not sure how the WII could replace that heavy resistance to drive into, unless your 'boxing' is just punching air or something... - EPhibian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It burns when I Wii
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dear Taxpayer under duress,
We are happy to anounce the we have wasted large sums of your money determining that moving your arms burns more calories than not moving your arms.
Sincerly,
Federal Government - 5hop4orce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2140% of zero is zero.
- ShardPhoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish people would actually try to read and understand articles on Digg before commenting on them, instead of commenting on the Digg title and summary in a rush to ***** on something without understanding it in order to look cool.
- smeger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cuz exercizi'n sucks ass, it is boring as hell, at least it is getting kids somewhat active, the kids that need to workort won't, cuz eatting twinkies is more enjoyable than having someone stare at your fat ass as you workout at the gym
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8ZsziZhusU
- yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Surprise! This study was funded by Nintendo.
- VermiciousKnid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got a great workout yesterday on wiisports. Do 30 mins of boxing and u'll work up a good sweat.
- jcs_goog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Incredibly interesting. I'm sure more of the calendar burning happens in the brain, too, because more neurons are involved. Just imagine if you could play Tetris with your entire body, say, shaking your right foot to move the blocks to the right. I wonder when controls will be integrated with speech commands.
- ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@GawtMilk: "What kind of "cardio" were you doing that could be replaced with swinging your arms?"
Question for you: have you seriously played Wii Sports Boxing? By seriously, I don't just mean play it...I mean:
1) Where you REALLY get into the game, swinging your arms furiously, not just just flicking your wrist.
2) Play against the pro level boxers, 5 or 10 matches in a row
You might not believe it, but that is the one game where you can REALLY get your heart pumping. If you can't, then I'd say either you haven't gotten immersed enough in the game, or you are pretty damn fit. - smeger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah.......where do you find this, and don't say because stocks. that really don't count, stocks are for maken money, not polictical sway
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This study is ridiculous. 12 kids is a study?
And if your kid's heart rate goes up to 130 from playing Wii...take him to a doctor! Or take him to a playground becuase his or her heart is not used to ANY strain if playing Wii makes it strain that much. - kabz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ran through 4 protein bars just keeping my blood sugar up during a deadmines run. I was a low lvl healer and stayed glued to the party health bars. It was intense.
I agree with the above comment that brain activity burns calories. - nonpareil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Moving hand/arm at wrist/elbow/shoulder > moving thumbs/fingers at knuckle.
What a surprise. - doctorcaligari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just create a left handed Mii...
I played so much that my right arm started hurting, so I switched hands. I actually did better with my left. Now to get maximum exercise, I play each activity twice, once with each hand. -
