- HCviolence, on 06/02/2009, -2/+84So remember kids, if you want to impress the videogame industry and get a job you should hack as much hardware as possible.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+50I love this guy´s projects. He has the craziest hacks for the wii
- Innuendo24, on 06/03/2009, -2/+41What is most important about natal I think is that you can use it while using any other classic input method (like a regular controler). They systems aren't exclusive of each other. I can be using a regular gamepad, and at the same time be using natal to do other things in the game such as using my legs, or using my head, or even temporarily removing a hand from the controller for a certain action. This system can be integrated with other more standard systems without you having to put down classic control methods.
The same can't be said for input methods that require a specific device (both the Wii Mote and PS3's new motion wand *must* be used), so those systems are incompatable with regular control pads. You can't use the PS3 "wand" and a dual shock at the same time. You can use a 360's pad and natal at the same time. This is what's so huge I think. - Falldog, on 06/03/2009, -1/+30It's Nintendo's loss for not picking up the talent. This is a great example of how showing off your work on the web can pay off.
- Subduction, on 06/03/2009, -0/+29As long as you can call "rags" graduating with a Phd in human-computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
It's more of a "get an education, be good at what you do, and then do it for a living" story. - ArcadeJunkies, on 06/03/2009, -4/+23Johnny Chung Lee is awesome, it's so exciting that he got a job like that from his toying around.
And Project Natal is currently better than Sony's EyeToy motion controller, but both will make changes after seeing each other's cards..
I did a lil article to explain:
http://digg.com/d1snNF - DevinWatson, on 06/03/2009, -2/+21They need to add Head Tracking to the 360, that would be AWESOME!
Johnny Chung's Wii Head Tracking Demo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw - Innuendo24, on 06/03/2009, -3/+18If you go read kotaku, there is a hands on playing burnout paradise with it. The demo-er was extremely impressed with it's responsiveness.
Before you go an assume it's just a demo, try doing a little research. - yellowfish04, on 06/03/2009, -4/+18What this sweet new technology means for:
guys - OMG IM A GIANT LIZARD I DESTROY YOUR TOWN BWAHAHAH
girls - omg check out this new dress OMG THAT IS SOOO CUTE!!! - inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+14You get the "Air Humper" achievements.
- RBobby, on 06/03/2009, -1/+14Nintendo should have hired this guy the moment he hit the web. But of course, Nintendo felt they didn't need him and believed they could just shove crap like Wii music down our thraots and call it a day. IF ONLY Nintendo would've had the brains to get in touch with this guy a couple years ago, perhaps we might've been playing some truly awesome Virtual Reality Wii games.
Oh well, Nintendo's loss... - ssquared22, on 06/03/2009, -4/+14Another great "rags to riches" success story. This dude worked his butt off and his reward is well deserved.
- UltraMegaFilms, on 06/03/2009, -7/+17Maybe they didn't want anyone officially from Nintendo because the Wii is about as useful as a baby dick in January.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/03/2009, -2/+12However Natal works out, I'm glad this guy got hired. His hacks were amazing, and he obviously deserved to by paid for that kind of work.
- Twenty5, on 06/03/2009, -1/+10One thing to notice in here is that the Natal controller tracks your body as the controller while the PS3 motion controller tracks the ball on the remote. For natal YOU move in the 3d space, while the PS3 remote tracks the remote moving in that 3d space and assumes your position from the ball.
Personally i like Natal better. - Twenty5, on 06/03/2009, -4/+13ehmm no. They did show the whole thing live with several tech demos......
- greenvortex, on 06/03/2009, -2/+11Johnny Lee's Wii hacks are legendary. Every big gaming company that didn't hire him should be kicking themselves right now.
- Innuendo24, on 06/03/2009, -1/+9People who have demo'ed Milo say it included head tracking.
- B1665r, on 06/03/2009, -1/+9Its a over night success after many years of hard work story then?
- bonarez, on 06/03/2009, -3/+10I wonder what happens if one mixes this with porn
- Andrewe1, on 06/03/2009, -0/+7Whatever, you are talking about "Natal is going to be better IF they do this and that". I saw two amazing presentations, but Sony's presentation looked more polished and more like a finished product. Natal looks like its ages away, and peter molyneux presenting it didn't bring any comfort either.
All in all, in the state they presented their technology, I feel I would have more fun with the sony one. Its cool controlling the game with just your hands and imaginary objects, but I'd rather have something in my hand that provides some sort of feedback...vibration at least. Since I think we can say we have experienced something close to Natal and thats the Eyetoy. There are a lot of games similar to the dodgeball game and they get old fast because in the end you are just hitting air and not getting any feedback at all. - ProfessorSYM, on 06/03/2009, -3/+9Yeah watch out everyone, we wouldn't want to hurt t0ny's feelings by saying how cool something is.
- compgeek, on 06/03/2009, -1/+7This looks amazing. here's hoping it's not 5-7 years before we actually see this out in the market
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 06/03/2009, -1/+7Alternately (as I just commented at the bottom of the page) if they made that melee combat thing online between two players, guys could beat the ***** out of each other...virtually! :P
But yeah, that bitch would never be steering a ***** F1 car or whatever.
Also it's super fun for the whole family to watch someone drive around a track, and when the need arises, pump your arm back and forth to screw tires in and such. MULTIPLAYER FUN - inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+7Johnny Lee, head tracking + COD 6 = The most epic of epic wins.
- sindex, on 06/03/2009, -1/+7Can't say I really care about Project Natal, but I always liked Johnny Chung's vids/hacks. I'm really glad to see him land a job and put his hobby to good use. The guy's too good for video game developers to not listen to him.
- Twenty5, on 06/03/2009, -1/+6I mean you can do more when your body is the controller.... a soccer game for example... you cant play soccer with a stick. Unless you put it in your pants or something....
- Thoku, on 06/03/2009, -2/+7Natal captures full body motion. And unless you are an android or maybe dead, then that'll include a head.
- TreatsTheBear, on 06/03/2009, -0/+5Can't they just make the thing quieter?
- iBeLiEvE, on 06/03/2009, -1/+6But he lost in the French Open!
- user24, on 06/03/2009, -0/+3note the subscript: "product vision" - you're right.
- Moonkeeper, on 06/03/2009, -2/+5Hopefully he'll leave a way to softmod a 360 in it.
- YoctoYotta, on 06/03/2009, -2/+5You don't want Natal doing this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw
Chung was an independent software developer using the Wii controller technologies to demonstrate various input methods in addition to the head tracking in the video above. Wii hacking is simply a means to an end for him, jack ass. - 1nhuman, on 06/03/2009, -3/+6I don't get all the Wii hate. Without Nintendo Microsoft nor Sony would have bothered with controls like this.
- avaris15, on 06/03/2009, -1/+4I was already psyched about Natal, but you just opened up my mind to the possibility of using both simultaneously.
- AmazingSteve, on 06/03/2009, -1/+4Of course. That's a fact. I should have known better than to wade into fanboy territory with an actual fact.
- MrCheerios, on 06/03/2009, -0/+3I don't think motion control has been effectively implemented by anyone yet. The wiimote and PS3's sixaxis still have their own issues that haven't been worked out. I'm a little skeptical about making the technology even more complicated when the ones on the market are still unrefined.
Nothing has surpassed the accuracy of the dpad or joystick with buttons. The only setback is blisters. - daridave, on 06/03/2009, -1/+4Actually, it's more like Nintendo wasn't smart enough to pick him up and use his skills to their advantages, so Microsoft did. Good for them. I like Nintendo, but they always ignore "us" unless we show them our wallets. This makes me very, very happy and I wouldn't be sad for the Big N if they get whopped by Natal. I actually hope it happens.
- foohookups311, on 06/03/2009, -1/+4That's it Microsoft has Johnny Chung working for them now. They will win the next 5 console wars. It was amazing to me that it took this long for someone to offer this kid a job. His wii-head tracking project was amazing and in genius.
- AVigorVermin, on 06/03/2009, -1/+3you can get feedback with natal. No one said it wouldn't be coupled with controllers or even the exact same wand thingy sony uses.
- Spire3660, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2Being a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction doesnt hurt either.
- glitchbit, on 06/03/2009, -1/+3lol, wow I can't believe it. I think Johnny would have jumped at the chance to work with Nintendo but I bet they did not even contact him. Good job microsoft! I am not a microsoft fanboy, but they sure did make a very good decision to bring Johnny on board.
When I first saw that video I was like hmm.. it may or may not really happen and if it did it probably would not play out as well as in that demo.. but thought it would be pretty cool and now after seeing that Johnny is party of this I have a lot more faith in this project of theres.
Can't wait! - induren, on 06/03/2009, -2/+4I actually sent him fan mail.
- RBobby, on 06/03/2009, -1/+3...With technology R&D done by someone of oriental decent...
- theaceoffire, on 06/03/2009, -2/+4"Unless you put it in your pants"
BRILLIANT! PS3 Porn games will never be the same! - jo21, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2microsoft own voice recognition didn't work on vista. and it isn't working on windows 7.
RC1 the one i am using. i a pretty sure it won't work well on natal. - badtiki, on 06/03/2009, -1/+3This looks extremely cool but but the video seemed off in a few places, espcially with the kid and the dinosaur, it seemed like he was mimicking the video not the other way around. IF this comes out and works as shown it will be mind blowing but I also remember being psyched for the MS ads for Origami and where did that bring us...
btw before the bashers commence, im not a PS3 fanboy, I own a 360 and love it! - kinjutsu, on 06/03/2009, -1/+3First thing I thought when I saw it, so that's what they hired Johnny Chung for.
- Andrewe1, on 06/04/2009, -0/+1Well, I based my opinion that in their current state, you could see how natal glitched in some places, like when they guy said "look at the bottom of the shoe of an avatar" the avatar glitched completely and didn't respond accordingly, in other demos the avatars seemed to the same and in a closed demo, it looked like they needed a room with a lot of light, and 3 clean white walls. They don't expect you to rearrange your living room do they? Then engadget said that the nice little box you saw on the ads was just made up for the presentation. The action was coming from a bigger black box that was hidden, and some sensors that were placed on the TV.
What did sony need? An eye camera which is out now, and their controller, which even if they said it was a prototype, it didn't act like one...all demos responded accordingly and there was no other special hardware running behind the curtains.
So like I said, based on what I saw on their press conferences, sony looks like its got a more "ready to use" product. - inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+2Microsoft doing this pfft I'll believe it when service pack 3 is released for it.
