And the controller still worked.
What is this guys understanding of the word "weak".
The fact the the strap broke due to excessive and unneeded force does not make a system weak.
Should the straps be stronger? Yes. Design for idiots. In where the controller is encased in a uranium casing and tethered to the user's arm with towing chains. - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -7/+106Too bad it didn't go through the TV. Now that would've been funny.
- Mugsleymug, on 10/12/2007, -15/+101I would have been happy to see the TV smash, anyone who piffs their controler that hard is a moron.
- DaveRocks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+75You can tell by the sound the wii-mote made when it hit the wall, he was swinging it way to hard. I would expect that from a 7 year old, but a grown man should know better.
- fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+72"In the middle of a sword fight I usually go all out."
omg, starwarskid is on digg! - b0wl0fud0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+61I feel like a total klutz writing about this but one of the problems I'm having with the Wii is with Red Steel. In the middle of a sword fight I usually go all out. The problem isn't that the controller slips (I hold onto them tightly), but that the cable connecting the nunchuk and the wiimote whips me in the face.
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -4/+47Who the hell needs to swing the controller that hard???
- Gorlith, on 10/12/2007, -6/+48The strap has plenty of slack between your wrist and the Wiimote... The only way you could do that to the strap is to let go of the control, many many times, or be freakishly strong I suppose. Here's a tip people, YOUR WIIMOTE ISNT AN ACTUAL PIECE OF SPORTING EQUIPMENT. lol.
- dmurray14, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43That guy is an idiot for swinging it that hard. The end.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Holy *****, in the video, the string that holds the strap on is TINY. I *swear* that the string on my Wiimote is thicker than that. It's not that thin.
Either that or I'm just crazy, equally possible.
Then again I'm not an idiot and wouldn't throw the controller at the TV with force like that. :P - nandorocker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Who says "frick???"
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Or maybe he should just hold on to his goddamn controller, *****, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.
- jayhawk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24yeah piece of crap that breaks when you throw it with full force against the floor. [/sarcasm]
DUH! - eridius, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22The worst part about the video is that at the end, they blame the Wii for having bad straps, when in fact they completely forget to mention the fact that the WIIMOTE STILL WORKS FINE after slamming it into the ground like that! That controller is one durable piece of equipment!
And yeah, he was swinging it *far* too hard. - weizilla, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22dumbass
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27He's a grown man? Gosh, I would never have known.
On another note, holy crap. It's Wii ***** TENNIS. Even in real tennis people don't hit that hard (well, when they know where the sweet spot is on their racket anyway). The key here was that he hasn't even owned the system for a day, meaning hes not used to it yet. Once you're used to it, you can find the lazy ways to do the same things.
On a slightly darker note, anyone remember the ipod bludgeoning incident a few years back? Don't be surprised if a wiimote lands in a similar story. That thing is so durable that it could easily be used as a weapon and not break. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21As unlikely as this seems, the same exact thing happened to me today. My dad was bowling on Wiisports and accidentally hit an ottoman in the room. The wrist strap snapped, the wiimote flew across the room, narrowly missing the Wii and a 60" projection TV. After taking a trajectory I'm still not certain about, it ended up behind my couch.
But, the wiimote survived with only a few scuffs - xerus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20No. A soft fluid swing, or a quick flick of your wrist will get the job done. These people are just acting retarded, and probably trying to break ***** on purpose.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Next up: A video of some moron crying when he takes his Ford Taurus off-road at 90mph and ***** it up.
- Pobotrol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I'd like to see him crush a SIXAXIS controller to dust with his bare hands!
- TheMikey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17@ Hindu
It likely stretched rather than a clean break. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Some of them must've shipped with really, really tiny straps because the ones on my friends' wiis are thicker...
But damn, swinging that hard doesn't do a damn thing in this game.. you're asking to destroy something expensive acting like that.
Be on the lookout for the first person to sell lexan/plexiglass LCD/plasma covers as a Wii accessory. - IcyStorm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Amen to that. Heck, my tennis racquet's frame broke by being thrown that hard -.-
- BaldMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14But you do hold on to the raquet in real tennis.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20The same thing happened to my wiimote. A roommate foolishly let go of it and the band snapped easily. Good thing those wiimotes are really sturdy, though.
They need to make the bands tougher. - Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15"On another note, holy crap. It's Wii ***** TENNIS. Even in real tennis people don't hit that hard"
They do to serve. - dustko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That's just it. The Wii is supposed to be engrossing and fun. The whole motion sensor thing is fun because it replicates roughly what the real life actions are. So if that's what makes it fun, it stands to reason that someone is going to have just a little .. too much fun.
I bet of all the reports of girlfriend/father/flatmate's who did this, none were even thinking about the control -- they were so absorbed into the game that they suspended their disbelief and were "really" swinging the racket, making the ball fly over the net. 99 swings out of 100, the controller wont slip out of their hands, but if(when) it does, the strap should be strong enough to withstand what it is designed to protect against. Then they can learn their lesson and tighten their grip without having to have to pay for a hole in the wall.
I hope they make it stronger, it would be a shame to have to bring someone back to reality just when they're really getting into the game; and it shouldn't be necessary to worry about someone smashing your plasma everytime they want to try it out for the first time. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12From the moment the Wii videos came out, it seemed like the system would be perfect for drunk people at a party -- except if someone throws it through your LCD TV...
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17For everyone blaming him, yes, he may have been going a little too fast but isn't the Wii supposed to be all engrossing and fun ? Third party straps here we come, maybe we'll see big chains or something interesting.
Besides, don't call him an idiot, if you watch the video he admits he got too excited and his hands were sweaty though he does point out how thin part of it is. - diversionmary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7When I get mine, I'm replacing that strap with some paracord.
- jm1234567890, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15You do swing the racquet that hard in tennis...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I whip myself in the face with the Nunchuk cord when I kick in Madden.
- lwoj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I just played wii tennis for the first time today, and I was almost as engrossed as he was. After a while I realized to just calm down a little, it isn't really virtual-reality accurate or anything. I wouldn't mind so much if that had happened to me, because it was the most exciting gaming experience I have had since my childhood. Watching this video, just look how excited the guy is! I don't blame him for overreacting at first, the Wii is so exciting the first time you pick up that controller.
And is it really underbuilt? I can't believe it survived after the noise it made hitting the wall. I think that's actually VERY impressive. If you've used the wriststrap, you know it's not that weak...the guy was hitting way way too hard. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I can't wait for someone to get hurt while playing with the Wiimote
someone gets punched in the face and gets their eye taken out.
Then someone else lunges and flies at his new Pioneer Plasma, costing him 7 grand.
Guy in our local college already had his fly out the window. - TortfeasorG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well...I'd have to disagree. If you pay attention to the video, he picks up the controller (after smashing it into the wall as hard as he could) and resumes playing as if nothing had happened. That would indicate non-piece of crap-ness.
also: what eridius said. - KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"Last text in video reads "Wii is Weak. Bad.""
Might be a sony fanboy who made the video, mad because there wasn't enough ps3's for him. hahahhah
I dunno, dude swings too hard, lets go, and all of a sudden, this gets on Digg?
OMG, I smashed the controller and it still works, WORST SYSTEM EVER!
tard
hahaha - LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Dumbass moron shouldn't be swinging it that hard. He was worse than the idiots in the commercials that over emphasize the movements. It's just too bad it didn't bounce back and hit him in the face.
- somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5In other news, I poured hot coffee all over myself and my laptop, scalding my nuts and breaking the computer.
I'm blaming Starbucks, for not making undroppable coffee cups and serving dangerously hot fluids in them, rather than accepting that I'm a ***** idiot. - Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The strap is a failsafe, not a warrant to just fling the damn remote wildly like an idiot. Nintendo put it there as insurance.
Just because you have an airbag in a car doesn't mean you should go around speeding and driving into walls.
Nintendo figured people had at least a bit of common sense. - Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Seriously ... so staged it isn't even funny. Did that mouth breather think he was serving up a real ball? That was thrown on purpose.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@Morphine7399:
I don't own a Wii nor do I intend to, but to my eyes, the defect appears to be in this guy's wussy hand. - int19h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And it didn't break
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My whole family played for the first time today at Thanksgiving, They picked up the controller right away and were playing Trauma Center and Wii Sports within minutes. Nintendo's design is f'ing brilliant if a family that has never owned a single game system picked it up and were having a hell of a time playing it.
My aunt, who has never played any video games, asked me where she could find a system, luckily I still had one that I hadn't put on eBay yet to give to her. - Gorlith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6it probably should be made tougher, but in all fairness Nintendo only has to design a part to withstand the systems designed use. Your not supposed to let go and the strap is just there as a "just in case" thing, it shouldn't be relied on. that all said I do think that third party ones that are stronger, or strengthening it yourself with some fishing wire or something is a good plan.
p.s. since sunday my wii has been used almost contantly and ive had like 20+ come by mo dorm and go through rounds of all wii sports, not a single incident sofar. - toolwerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4solution: if your a ***** idiot, then reinforce the strap.
problem solved - everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6nope. the game will register the movement even if it's only from the wrist.
- dv8withn8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So, you just *happened* to be recording a friend playing Wii when he's being a moron and lets go of the controller. If it was an actual tennis racket his opponent would be ducking for cover every other swing. If it wasn't staged I highly doubt the controller would be working just dandy after being thrown with that much force.
The comments at the end prove this video is just a hoax put together by some fanboy with too much time on his hands. Wii is weak? Then why'd you drop 250 bucks on it? - dustko, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Why are people digging down comments like this? There's two options really, educate the "typical user" on how to control themselves when they get too into the game ("you're swinging it too hard!!!" x10 until they get the picture) ... or, improve the strength of the strap.
This is a design issue IMO. In this thread alone there's been lots of reports of it snapping, and though its usually by someone who doesn't play or understand the system that much, it's a reality. You have to design for how people will use a device/interface, not reeducate them.
disclaimer: I'm a big Wii fan, but I'm calling it as I see it. - Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7There's no need to do it that hard. I think this was staged. The guy just so happened to be filming it and the guy does a hard serve like that. Seems they're trying to stir something up.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5that was a full on tennis serve. Dude was probably staging it.
