- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+48Well, after digging on the japanese site for a bit, it seems to have answered quite a bit about how the console's going to be. I like it. Built in weather and news are certainly nice features for a game console. Honestly, I'd rather know if it's raining tomorrow than if I'd beaten some guy on the planet named "XxX n00bEat0r XxX" at playing Galaga.
Good job Nintendo. - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42Yes excite is better. But it had this gem when talking about the news function.
"WiiConnect24 automatically acquires the news of all a domestic, overseas genres. If the power supply of Wii is turned on by the sense that reads the newspaper in the sink, the hot poo can be confirmed at any time on the television screen every morning."
I repeat... "the hot poo can be confirmed at any time" - Nicolasd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35@Gunite
Your post is pretty lame but you inadvertently bring up a nice point... Developers could use that weather info to use it in game... It really means you could have the real weather appear in a game like Animal crossing for example...
That'd be pretty nice... - those, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28here is the official Wii preview trailer from Nintendo

- chair, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I'm so glad the Australian language is going to be available, no more having to translate from American! Think of all the Zs i'll save, but then it's gonna cost some Us :/

until english version available... - aOenEz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14...Because YouTube doesn't use flash...
- jfujita, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Where can I get that Nintendo TV?
- Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12What I like is that nintendo has not hyped this part of the console up.
It looks like just something bonus that they threw in. I mean seriously if you don't want it its cool you don't use it but still...Having Flash video that can play directly on a browser is awsome...ooooo might be able to use it to watch DL.tv on it ...maybe... - funtownarcade, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22OMG this is AWESOME! Best dashboard ever.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12dusteddotnet: I think you missed the whole point. In-game weather means the weather that is IN THE GAME ie. In hyrule, there will be a rainstorm when you're having a rainstorm in real life.
- shroom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Its not high def, but 640x480 is a good resolution for your average TV.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13That translation is terrible. Use Excite, it's leagues better.
http://excite.co.jp/world/english/web/?wb_url=http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/&wb_lp=JAEN&wb_dis=2 - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11They did it in a useful, 'your mom could casualy check it from the couch' sort of way, its more of a dynamic television channel than a computer.
Nowhere in this sytem do they do anything along the lines of booting up linux and opening up a word processor. Other than the web browser, which I bet will see limited usage, This isnt a replacement of the PC, or even a competition to it. Its information brought to your television on command in a very slick way. - jfujita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Wii is made to stay on 24/7 so you dont need to boot. In the interview by the creators of Wii, they want to make it so you can quickly check the weather or search on the web while your watching TV or your in the living room. It is not meant to replace the PC. They know that people will still use their PCs for normal internet use.
- android8675, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'm sure everyone's said it already, but DAMN! Wii60 FTW!
I'm so glad they got the Wiimote dialed in, looks smooth as silk (of course who knows how many blooper reels they had in those videos) hahah
KUDOS NINTENDO! - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Also, did anyone else notice the the controller seems VERY wobbly? The guy is sitting 2 feet from the screen and the cursor seems incredibly wobbly and inaccurate.
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nintendo--you are all geniuses. I'm excited just for the virtual "Mii" hang out on Wii! Brilliant.
Things I like and don't mind $250 for:
-Miis are organized alphabetically or by sex! Then you can select which one you really like and save it to the remote to take around. Cool!
- The news channel. I want to read more about this, because if I can read Japanese and English news on TV through the Wii, they're amazing.
- Checking the weather (full week forecasts, too!) in various spots you've designated. The demo shows full on prefectural weather news, as well as global forecasts. It should be pretty easy to jump around the world this way =D All with that cool, jumpy menu.
- (This is probably Japan only feature:) You can use the Wii to send/receive quick mails and photos to family members' mobile phones over WiiConnect24! It basically acts like a message board for those accessing it to put photos and notes onto it for others to access. I doubt I can use this in America, though...?
Anyway, just thought I'd translate that page for some of you guys... - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Were all those customized people the way you can pick your player name and avatar before the game? Have all your friends make a profile and then pick that your playing with, dad, your brother, and a friend. and there you go. all your wii sports characters are ready?
Hopefully that news reader is really RSS, and we can set it up to read digg!
Digg needs more Japanese speaking people! I want to know! - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Anyone care/able to translate the widget titles in the first video?
Watching this, reminds me of the orignial xbox dashboard, with the pulsating 3D graphics, and then it makes me chuckle a little about how much better this is.
Interactive effing television. - pokemogu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/features/wii_channel.html
Internet Channel:
Browser from OperaSoftware with Adobe Flash
Internet Browser is optional (but until June 2007, you can download it free of charge) - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Are you serious? And yet the 'PS3 can't be a computer because we already have computers' argument only applies to Sony why?"
Because it also costs as much as a computer. - Scad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I have to admit... I'm freakin' excited about the Weather and News features. Looks like I'll be starting every morning with booting up the ole' Wii to see if I need my raincoat or not.
- those, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Looks like heaps of the games are bundles of fun.
trauma center and cooking mama look sweet. Also that shooting range one.
Damn it. I think they all look good! - Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I won't put anything up my ass, but I will shove my Wiimote up yours =)
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yes, and you can save the characters you want to take around onto the Wiimote, says the video! =D
- 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Is there going to be a keyboard for the Wii, or are you suppose to load a set of bookmarks from a drive share on your network and be chained to those?
So far, the Wii is looking really awesome. - jfujita, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Seems like you can buy Virtual Console games and new channels from the Shopping Channel using credit card or pre-paid card.
- Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Whoops Sorry I meant that having flash video that can play directly on my TV would be awsome.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10So, I'm going to be reading news and using a browser at a resolution of ... 480p? I appreciate the inventiveness of the idea, but its practical application seems to be ... problematic given the technology Nintendo is working with.
However, like with any new tech product, I'll be waiting to see it in person before making any judgments. November can't come fast enough for me. - Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6well after looking a the http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/features/wiiconnect24.html
website it appears that you can send the mail between console/phone/computer/other console so I am going to hope that its not just a japan only thing.
might not be the best from wii-> computer but the other way arround would be useful (again bonus feature I was not expecting)
Dude...I hope they allow US systems to access the japanese news. Always could help my studying and keeping up with some of what happens in Japan. - ChrisRX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm guessing he meant flash 8. I'm a linux user and i'm still stuck on flash 7 which means I can't view any of those videos on the wii site, youtube on the other hand doesn't use flash 8, so I can watch that
- ajaxfontura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/index.html
So does 2006 12.2 mean December 2, 2006? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Because when you are playing on your console you aren't at your PC ;)
- Smoktiludy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wii Sports is bundled in the U.S. version.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6157573.html
Japanese version doesn't have any game bundle, which is why it is $38 cheaper. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Holy *****! That video was amazing...!
And do I see a new Puzzle Fighter game there?! - Indolentron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, Dec 2 is the official release date for Japan. Allegedly it will be Nov 19th for North America but I don't think we've heard that directly from Nintendo yet.
- Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For the effort it took you to click on the article, write the moan and click submit, you could have just banged your head against the wall a couple of times. It would have been more effective.
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think that having multi-functionality tools on a television set is a good thing when done well. Even cable television channels don't provide an interactive menu to jump all the way around the world to check different countries' weather!
Even weather.com, for example, involves typing in City Name, Zip Code, etc. There are also ads splattered all over the site. It's quick and easy with the Wii, so I think they did a good job. Maybe more kids'll read the news this way? - CosmosGoddess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nintendo is finally going beat Sony!
- chemicalrxn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If Google's currency converter is correct (and the price is the same in the US) :
Virtual Console Games:
Famicom (NES): $4.25
Super NES: $6.80
N64: $8.00
Sports: $40.00
and the Wii:

http://www.planetgamecube.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=12042 - Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It will look just fine and be a great addition to any home theatre system. I cannot wait for this console after seeing some of these videos. Nintendo makes things fun just naturally ^^
look at the avatar designer thing! I mean that alone looks like something I could play with for a while to get my avatar put together =P
Other game creators step back and watch as Nintendo shows you how it is done, once again. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Holy crap did Gamevideos do a big update on Wii GAme footage!!! Check it out y'all!!!

- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ Smoktiludy:
They don't have that bundle, but they do have "Beginner's Wii Bundle" which features 9 different types of beginner Wii games + 1 Wiimote for 4,800yen. For them, Wii Sports costs the same amount, but if they buy the other "Beginner's" bundle, they get a free remote, a value of 3,800yen. Do we have those 9 games in the US? - mdamico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I find it kind of humorous that people are upset that they might get some exercise while playing a video game.
A boxing game where you hold the controllers up in front of your face to protect yourself and actually throw punches seems 1000 times more fun that pressing A or B on a controller. And if I can get some exercise in the process that sounds great.
I see a lot more exercise possibilities for the Wii as well. Strap a Wii controller to the wheel of an exercise bike, and the game could read the speed you are pedaling, let the wheel turn and the remote would handle the turn(no extra hardware needed in the exercise bike (just a way to mount the remote to the wheel and a game that understands the movement). A track and field game where you strap a remote to each ankle that could read running and jumping. A rowing machine with a remote attached to each arm.
Seems like a lot of potential for the Wiimote. -
