- cheez, on 10/12/2007, -6/+76the hack wasn't even worth the effort. most of it didn't work. i'm waiting for opera
- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32It's free when your using a neighbors wireless router.
- r3m1x, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31oh great, companies blocking out unwarranted useage of interface features, hmm...where haven't we seen this before?
Yeah, I pulled off the Wipeout Pure browser hack waayyy too many times, the effort wasn't worth it to pull it off on the Wii. I had my fun, the PSP has a web browser, there is joy in the world. - waytoorandomx, on 10/12/2007, -13/+31Nintendo learns from Sony? That's a first (and a bad start at that)!
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22What did they learn from Sony? Nintendo didn't do anything bad. They didn't kill off any good homebrewers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22So what? Opera is coming for free anyway, free until June 2007, possibly longer. No use whining, we really didn't lose anything.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I don't understand why they can't release the browser already...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Opera is free...
- dungbeetle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Their newer versions are free.
http://www.opera.com/ - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The opera browser for the DS costs the equivalent of $60 in the U.K...god only knows how much the Wii version is gonna cost once you have to start paying for it. Nintendo make great systems at great prices, but jesus christ, you get scalped to ***** when it comes to everything else. Paying an inflated price for a browser multiple times is NOT my idea of fair commerce.
- RckmRobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9If getting Opera for the DS were as simple as downloading the browser, then it should be free. But they need to sell it on a cartridge. THAT is why it costs money.
- weezerrock86, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Under the new updated parental controls theres a setting to block use of the web browser, so maybe the web browser is on its way sooner then we thought?
- Threnody, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17My guess is that the limited version of Opera they were using was only licensed for use in the store...presumably so they could still sell Opera after it stops being free. Opera might be pissed if they went to all the effort to port the browser to Wii to find everyone cheating their way out of paying for it.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I believe they call it a 'contract'.
Anyway, Opera gets paid for this and it puts their browser into a lot of homes, why wouldn't they do it? - gage006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The Wii Opera Browser is free until mid 2007 when it is finally released. Find something else to complain about.
- czimmerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ bluemist
Yeah, I forgot how horrible it was to browse the web on the PSP. I take my girlfriend to the doctors three times a week, and usually I pounce on AP that's across the straight on my iBook while I'm waiting for her to get done. Last night I was like, "I wonder...I never use my PSP, so why not just carry that with me instead of the iBook." Charged it, opened the browser, and after like two seconds I was like "Sony won first in the Special Olympics with this web browser." and off it went... - Koray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It doesn't? ***** I better go remove MiniMo from my PocketPC.
- Jakubowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ f3l1x
I too have noticed that from wiimodwii, I went there thinking the people would know what they are talking about and offer some new finds. But everything is either something from another site, or a far-fetched idea. I think the main concern over at the site is getting roms working on eachothers Wii's so they don't have to buy them.
Also I too already found a way around it and was actually using it before the DNS trick came along. - felyduw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Embedded Opera isn't gratis. They let go the browser on the PC because they weren't making any money out of it.
- Drehmini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've read somewhere that you will be able to use a USB keyboard.
Can't quite remember where I read it.. so don't take my statement as fact. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Bury please.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4they took out the internet hack and added parental controls over internet use, signalling the opera release is soon.
- Threnody, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's not going to be free for the Wii after March or so
- Sophistifunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Look, they talk the talk, but there's no way it's going to be a pay-for-download on the Wii. They're not idiots, and they know that 500,000 non paying users is better for the company than 5,000 paying users. Mindshare has value, and it's free on most other platforms.
- f3l1x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3not only that but the psp's wipeout browser didn't require a web server, proxy and JS to make the embedded interface work.
- f3l1x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Its not so much an exploit at this point as it is violation of the shop channel's EULA. Rather the Wii's EULA.
short version.
Do not mess with network connections coming in or going out of the Wii.. or DIEEEEE!
Ok I made that last part up. - CGbeerboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5isn't nintendo giving away opera at 1st anyways? and a paid download later?
- Betaguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also, given that the hack used the shop channel. there's a potential for I.D. Theft. A small one, but I figured Nintendo would close it once they put up the browser channel. Now, where's my Google Channel, DAMMIT!
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@gage006: Ignore the facts you mean.
Look, i'm not against Nintendo, i have a DS and i intend to buy a Wii, but that doesn't mean i have to bury my head in the sand and pretend all is well. Opera is free on the PC...and has many many more functions (it's also freely available for other platforms.....some with fewer users than the Wii/DS userbase, so don't try and say the number of users has anything to do with the cost), it's £30 ($60) on the DS, and i don't expect it to be free for that as there are manufacturing costs, certainly not £30 worth though, but there will be none for the Wii. It WILL eventually cost something on the Wii (and upgrades will more than likely have to be paid for too). - Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There may be more than we are hearing about here, Nintendo doesn't pull dick-moves I'm sure there was something that they are protecting against, at least I hope.
- Rooker156, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Good for nintendo (I know this is going to get dugg down) but its good they patched it, i mean, what if opera decided hey, you know some people out there are screwing us, lets not let nintendo release the browser. then what would we do. a few bad apples ruin the bunch
- Rooker156, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this contract only works if people are paying to download the browser. using the store as a browser is cutting them out, so where in all of this are they getting paid? nintendo pays a little, but its restrictive to store use only.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Because, they already had a deal for Opera with the DS. It's essentially the same browser.
- DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can you even plug in a keyboard to a Wii? Typing would be a pain with the Wiimote, especially if you are use to keyboard shortcuts.
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i am not really sure why people are mad about Nintendo patching the exploit. Most people that knew how to and/or had the times to implement the hack most likley already have a computer to browse the web on.
- howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The internet channel is the one that needs to be "hacked" when its released... to self proxy."
Why? And what is "self proxy"? - Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3.. simple: to keep the buzz up. Same goes for releasing virtual console titles.
- supdawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That would require moving.
- TheFlamingCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think a Bluetooth keyboard would be much better than USB. If you're on the couch, you really don't want wires! The Wiimotes are Bluetooth so the technology is there and available. It seems like a logical, must have item, if they really want to get people using their Wii's for the Internet in spite of bad TV resolutions.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Jeyrad: Not for pocketpc. :(
- howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First of all the Shop Channel browser hack was largely useless. No one in their right mind would prefer that over a proper browser.
Secondly, Opera does make money from the desktop version. Like Mozilla, Opera makes money from searches. But yeah, just because it's free on PC doesn't mean that it has to be on other platforms. Takes time and money to port stuff, you know... - howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The opera browser for the DS costs the equivalent of $60 in the U.K..."
Remember the DS browser came on a cartridge with an additional memory pack. Those things cost money. The packaging probably adds a lot to the price.
It's easier and cheaper to do it over the net, so the Wii browser will probably be cheaper. - howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'm wondering why the hell they didn't use firefox instead of opera."
Maybe Nintendo simply found Opera to be better? Firefox is fine on PCs, but... face it, it does have rather steep memory requirements :)
Minimo? LOL. - f3l1x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Instead of using nintendo's proxy.
- Dujoducom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the difference is that if they used firefox they could potentially offer it for free, where as there is actually an opera license that needs to be paid so the fee gets transferred to us
- Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats why one invented r2d2
- osc1882, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1.... Yeah, it's really alright. The browser will be out soon.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope you're right.
- Koray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the record, yes, you will be able to plug in any USB keyboard.
- aferret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hello! posting with my cookie enabled Opera based Wii internet trial version here... just figured i'd, you know, show off that i may be one of the first to use it... so yea, see ya around...
