- AdverseEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I'm sorry man, but that was really bad.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15o rly?
Nintendo trademarked the name "Starcube" in 2001 (or was it 2000?). Everyone thought that was going to be the official name for Nintendo's Dolphin. Needless to say, Nintendo never used it. - thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12i dont care what they call it... im getting a sticker or something that says Revolution on it and slaping it on the front of it the day i get it.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Here's proof for any doubters. I was actually wrong on two counts, though. It's "Star Cube" (two words) and they filed it just 3 days before January 1st 2000.

President Yamauchi had insisted on calling the Gamecube the "Star Cube", while Miyamoto and many others were opposed to it. Hmmm... guess who won that battle... - bouche, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9yeah, so it looks like all those people that bought 'revolution' domain names are screwed. Wii domain names can now continue to flourish ;)
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well, I guess this will just be a lost cause then:
http://www.wii.stu.ac/ - shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5>> "...I know I'm going to look like a moron flicking the controller around in front of my friends..."
People of the internet, I say unto you: GOOD GRAVY. I hate reading these comments about how insecure people are with their video gaming habits. I've noticed this going on since Nintendogs was released -- "I love the game, but I wouldn't be caught dead playing it. I play my PSP on the bus, blah blah blah."
Shut your mouth, people! Shut it up!
If people don't like you because you're petting a digital dog on the bus, then those people aren't worth liking back. If your friends make fun of you because you're having a great time sword fighting with your TV, GET NEW FRIENDS. If you truly enjoy or love something and you hide that to appease someone else, then you are a total bitch. And that doesn't just apply to swinging around a remote control.
I need to take a shower now, god dammit. - AdverseEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Companies trademark names all the time with no intent to use them. It's like buying a domain name that you don't intend to use, just because it's good.
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Man, someone should have rushed ahead and trademarked it before Nintendo and that would have forced them to use another name =/
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And here is another good source: http://www.planetgamecube.com/specialArt.cfm?artid=1749
- Xipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Streamed classic NES games?
Either way Wii isn't all the bad when it's typed, but whenever I hear someone actually say it, it sounds absolutely rediculous, I honestly don't think I'll ever get used to it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From Wikipedia's "trademark" article:
"The ™ symbol may be used when trademark rights are claimed in relation to a mark, but the mark has not been registered with the government trade marks office of a particular country or jurisdiction, while the ® is used to indicate that the mark has been so registered. It is not mandatory to use either symbol, although the force of convention is such that the symbols are widely used around the world. However, it is generally unlawful to use the ® symbol with a mark when that mark is not registered."
Trademarks can be made simply by using them in some public media. - bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"providing temporary use of non-downloadable video game programs provided via the Internet"
I can't even begin to imagine what that one means. ideas? - Xentrion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"wet suits for immersions; protective helmets for sports; machines and apparatus for immersions; regulators for immersions; machines for electric arc welding; machines for metal cutting; electric door openers; ear plugs"
Can anyone say Swiss Army Knife? - danieltko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wii is going to kick ass and take names...
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would they register "nintendo wii" twice?
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are plenty of stupid names to use, registering one or another wouldn't make a difference..if they couldn't use Wii, they would get Pii or ZiiZii or whatever...
- krimsyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does the name really matter? The fact is everyone will get use to it and just look at the Wii as another great system.
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One very impressive detail, despite the name, is that Nintendo always changes things in such a way that they have a completely new console so they need a brand new name.
Unlike Playstation XX or Xbox (insert suffix here), Nintendo won't be making Gamecube 2 or NES 5. Although, NES 5 could have been a cool name. - bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok...that is insane. fake or not, that concept is absolutely INSANE!
- Prod1gy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm already quite use to the name...its becoming more and more like a lexicon for me everyday.
Just sit down, glance at the logo, say it a few times (setting aside urine jokes), breathe in and out, and the next thing you know, you'll love it. - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I don't know what people are bitching about, I think it's a descent name. You've got a retarded name like Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 which isn't as bad since we're accustomed to the Playstation brand already, but if you think about it play-station just looks a little retarded but they pulled it off. Wii isn't going to be an ordinary game system and doesn't need an over-hyped name. Revolution would've been a good name but it's more of a hype name and sounds like it fits in too much w/ PS3 and Xbox360. Wii is short and simple, and I think once people get over the initial 'weeeeeeee!!!!' thoughts about the name, it's gonna grow on them.
- ArcadeJunkies, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1It may not matter:
http://digg.com/gaming/Wii_=_Holodeck_ - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just because it was trademarked isn't exactly proof that it's here to stay.
Regardless of the trademark, it is likely here to stay, but this kind of news reporting has gotten extremely speculative and lame. - fani, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ESRB will rate the console - Nintendo Wii - AO due to its suggestive name.
- Norante, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
Well, it's not going to make a difference. Roll on next week for the games and details. I just want to play it. - TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The proof of the non-existence of all theological beings is nearly sealed with this discovery.
- JohntB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Flash games?
- rosschilen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's pronounced "we" just as their official site describes. It represents that the console is for everyone.
- kerby74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't care what they call it, Revolution was a great name and I WILL buy one the minute it is on the shelf at my local Wally World and I WILL call it my Nintendo Revolution. I don't understand what could be going through the mind of the marketing genius (sarcasm) that came up with the name Wii instead of Revolution. Unless there was some legal pressure from someone claiming rights to the name Revolution and Nintendo has just kept quite about that.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"just picture it now, all the people saying they're going to play with their Wii's.. are these Japs doing this to us English-speakers on purpose? Does "wii" mean something in Japanese"
Hey at least they didnt name it "Nintendo ***** and Balls" - zukeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, that subdomain wasn't there before.
- walugi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Obviously some people care. Now go crawl back under your rock.
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm calling it my Revolutionary Wii
- pozzoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now... there are other nice things in the article, like.. ' "watches containing a game function", "providing temporary use of non-downloadable video game programs provided via the Internet" '
That could be nice. - christoffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you use the word "we" on occasion? Like, "What are we going to do"? Is that embarrassing too?
Also, not in reply to this parent post, but people who say it sounds so bad/funny/stupid to say "Do you want to play with my Wii?", do they really say for example "Do you want to play with my XBOX?"? I don't know, but I don't think people talk like that. People just try to find jokes about it. - TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You make a good point....
- Adoozie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Shame. The name is embarrassing to say aloud.
- leer317, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to one of the comments, Nintendo apparently registered some other trademarks, which were:
nintendo chilipop
nintendo g beam
nintendo bemo nintendo bemo
nintendo dopido nintendo dopido
nintendo wii nintendo wii
nintendo fanana
If this is true, I can see why they chose "wii"... 'twas the least crazy of them all... :P - oojamaflip2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can anyone find a definitive source wor what Wii actually stands for? Does anyone have any idea? Are the two ii's Roman Numerals?
- cesclaveria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wii its no so bad, in most languages doesn't have any meaning or bad jokes about urine related.
So its fine by me. (I know, no one cares if its fine by me :P) - Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wii (Why) would we want that?
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think there are lots of embarrassing things about the thing besides the name. I'm all for the new game play ideas but I know I'm going to look like a moron flicking the controller around in front of my friends and stuff. The same thing goes for the DS mic (and Wii if it has one). I am not going to talk to my games in any kind of public setting.
- christoffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about: http://wii.nintendo.com/ ?
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not liking the name. While "Wii" is intended to evoke thoughts of "we" or "whee" it also means "wee" (small) or worst, "weewee" (urine). As in to "take a wee". Should have stuck with Revolution.
- endtime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not Satan...
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It wont be much worse then the guys that say Ness instead of N.E.S. or even worse Sness instead of S.N.E.S.
- allanj37, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0it'd be better if it were pronounced as "why". well, maybe more like Y. yeah, that'd actually be a pretty cool name. Wii - pronounced like Y.
