- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42That video was compressed so much, how can anyone make a judgment on the graphics quality? Look at the guys hand, then your own. Compare how poorly his hand looks in relation to yours. Now use that same logic when making baseless comments about the quality of the game's graphics.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+38That looks NOTHING like Edinburgh (pronounced "edinburruhh" by the way Mr Producer) - it's more like a floating platform several hundred feet above the city.
This is one game that actually looks really unnatural to control with the Wii remote. While others have shown some real promise and intuitive controls this just looks really clumsy. - PercyKittenz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I got a chance to play this at Toys for Bob a couple months ago, and the controls really aren't at all uncomfortable. You rotate the controller to the right and left to turn and after about 5-10 minutes of crashing into walls, it clicks and you don't really notice what you're doing anymore. It's a lot more intuitive than trying to manipulate a thumbstick for fine control.
The reason the guy keeps shaking the controller, which is what might make you think he's uncomfortable with holding it, is that doing that makes you use boost. It's maybe a little distracting to have to remember to do that, but doesn't cause you to lose control or anything.
It actually looks like they've made the tricks a lot easier to do than when I tried it, which was one thing I wasn't too happy with.
Also, yeah, while the guy does say that the levels are based on "real world locations", they are pretty loose with realism. The levels are themed based on geographical areas, like San Francisco or an amazon temple, but they're not actual areas you'd ever see. - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26looks boring
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+16Tony Hawk graphics have NEVER looked good, even on PC. Which is fine, because it's all about the gameplay.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I must disagree with some of you--that looks pretty fun to me.
- Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Zelda: Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime: Corruption look pretty hot.
- Fulcan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Its tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme thats right on time is tricky! trick, tricky, tricky, tricky!
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15So...its SSX Tricky. On a skateboard.
- felyduw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The graphics are subpar? How can you make a statement like that from a compressed video of a tv showing the game?
About the controller, I have no idea what is doing what so I can't really tell you if it's confortable or not. Have you ever played it?
You're not an heretic (or were you trying to say eratic?), you're just stating your opinion as I'm not a fanboy just for finding your justification lacking. - CROWMST311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12hes using the d-pad for tricks.
- PercyKittenz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Crowmst is correct. The d-pad is for doing tricks in mid-air (and tilting the controller in certain ways while in mid-air does variations on those tricks, IIRC), but turning is done by rotating the wiimote.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16yeah, i wasn't sure how to phrase it. But, that's about it.
- brokensk8er, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12And the PSP is outselling the DS. And clouds taste like candy, right, Nitrodist?
- H3avyC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is it possible not to land a trick on this game? No matter how horribly this guy seems to start a jump off course, he miraculously lands the trick and continues forward. It's the same thing I noticed with Excite Truck. No matter how badly you go off course, you always seem to land OK.
I hope not all of the Wii games have this kind of compensation built in. - plingboot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8>I genuinely love American pronunciations of British towns.
It is very funny, You can tell he's tried to avoid the classic 'Eding-burg' mispronouciation, but Eden-Buraho? Brilliant! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10like 1080, but with a skateboard!
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They look like crap compared to what? We know that the Wii is more powerful than the Gamecube. I don't think many people would be disappointed if every Wii game had graphics equal to RE4 on Gamecube. They'll probably be even better.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Lets just digg you down because you're zetsurin the happy PS3 troll then.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8???.....It looks fun to me too. I'll have to play it to know for sure though.
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Oh boy. This looks awful... and I don't mean graphics either. This guy's supposed to be showing off the game and he ran smack into a wall or magically floated in midair to line up with a landing place a dozen times... I'm even less impressed than the first time we saw this game in the news.
- mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm sorry, haven't I seen this on the PS1? I'm just really struggling to see whats new and exciting for the Tony Hawk series on the Wii.
I'm starting to get worried that the Wii may indeed spurt out the same crap titles we've been playing for years but with a wireless tilt controller. Where exactly is the innovation? - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think the game looks like ***** but I put my finger on precisely WHY...
Weak graphics? ...Weaker than other new systems, but that's not it.
Clumsy controls? ...probably a little bit...
Snowboarding on Wheels? ...quite a bit..
TIRED TONY HAWK GAMEPLAY ...Winner!
THPS franchise is about as good as Madden for repackaging the same ***** over, and over, and over and...... I'll buy a Wii on launch but I wont be touching this shoddy production! (digg down now) - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Wow, that is the most clear, concise definition of a fanboy that I have read anywhere. Nice work for summing it up so succinctly."
How is that being a fanboy? It makes perfect sense! Why would you judge a system by some lame 3rd party games? - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Personally, I'm happy that developers aren't putting all their focus into graphics with the first batch of Wii games. Hopefully, it will help kill the 'good graphics = awesome game' mentality.
I can't begin to tell you how many times I've seen people claiming that a game will be good based on a CGI trailer. Want proof? You only need to look around Digg. Search for videos from TGS.
Now don't get me wrong. I love eye-candy as much as the next guy, but I'd rather review a game based on how it plays.
Just throwing that out there. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Philbert -
"The only intuitive interface is the nipple." -Scott Francis - vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sk8land is great for a handheld translation
and project 8 is looking like it may redeem the franchise a bit - BenSerwa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The game does look like it sucks... but I blame that on the game itself rather than the Wii. Really, Tony Hawk shouldn't turn into a racer. That's dumb and lame.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to say IMHO the best controls for a game like this were the SSX series with the PS controllers. Very intuitive, everything just felt right.
- danc4498, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5In all fairness, every next generation system spurts out crap titles. Look at the 360's launch. Full of crap, and why? Because it was new and people were willing to buy anything for their new system.
Wii will definitely have crap titles, but you shouldn't judge it by it's crap titles, but rather by it's good titles. - kcstamey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmmm...maybe....rentable. or borrowable.
- D3adKl0wn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so from what i can see, the Wii rewards people who still play videogames like supermario bros. like they did when they first played their first console game (i.e., "jumping" while moving the controller up and over)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I see that the Tony Hawk franchise is going Downhill... thanks wii!
- breaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sk8land on the DS is an awesome THPS game. anyone who skates/skated has to love it.
downhill jam FTL. garbage. - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL
That was my first impression of the game. SSX on a skateboard. - evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Rofl. That's punny.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3People are digging your comments down mostly because they have no real merit.
- styromaniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Metroid Prime 3 ought to be one of the funner releases because of its adaptation as a Metroid game for the Wii. I wonder if Nintendo will make a means of vocal chating on online games because it would suck if you couldn't communicate with team mates. If it won't happen, then I guess I'll choose a 360 over the Wii for online functionality.
- Killgore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This game looks nothing like the old school Tony games that were so great. Tony Hawk was never about racing people or any crap like that, but pulling off huge combos and completing tasks. I know this will be one Wii game that i wont be buying.
- purplegromit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great Britain (or the UK as it's also known) is made up of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh come on, that doesn't actually look boring.
- Tempest811, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This video does a horrible job of actually demonstrating how the controls work. I just felt like I was standing beside some kid in the mall watching him play a game...it taught me little.
As far as what people have said about the controls, it seems like it takes a lot of getting used to...even the guy demonstrating didn't seem to have it down. This just seems like a so-so game (possibly the worst tony hawk game of the franchise) combined with un-natural movements.
The whole fun of the old tony hawks was the free reign in huge areas...now it's just a linear downhill path through extremely exaggerated landscapes vaguely based on real places. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The control scheme doesn't really look that hard, but it doesn't seem right. This seems like one of those games that IS using the controller as a gimmick.
flip the controller to flip your board and you got a game. - r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Eden-bourough in Scotchland...
...damn yanks
(I'm an hour away from Edinburgh in Scotland) - jparkinson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I fail to see how it is the Wii's fault in any way that the Tony Hawk franchise is going downhill. Try blaming the developers?
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the Wii, but that really doesn't look like it's gonna work well.
- Sconbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My thoughts exactly.
- breaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why the flip would a publisher think that this is a good idea for the WII? even without this horrible idea of mixing the wiimote into the gameplay, i didn't like the 'downhill jam' idea anyways.
this title will fail, and should. the DSLite is a GREAT console for a skateboarding game. the WII with a wavebird controller would be a better platform than the WII with the wiimote.
last time i skated, i used my legs. my arms were always free to chug my 40oz of malt liquor. - LesserEvil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This game should not be allowed to have the Tony Hawk name in the title.
It appears to have nothing to do with the gameplay of the original Tony Hawk games, the name is only there for marketing. :( - velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing against the wii but... tony hawk hasn't been fun for awhile now. I'd like to see if the different controls can change that. I agree that the downhill jam style doesn't really look too appealing...
