- kevin_qnn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+69they are sending out replacements but its technically not a recall, they aren't making you send back your wiimote or straps
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -9/+66Yeah - I've heard it's mostly when playing Wii Sports bowling, where you have to make a ballistic motion and let go of the BUTTON... and these geniuses are letting go of the whole thing. It's not about the strap.
In other words, it can only be attributable to human error. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -5/+57Recalling the straps would have been like a company recalling baseball bats for hurting people that they're thrown at. JUST HOLD ONTO IT.
- iameightyseven, on 10/12/2007, -8/+55Replacement != recall
- sam10685, on 10/12/2007, -31/+70good. there's nothing wrong with them. people are thinking that they are too cool to wear them then they play it and accidently loose their grip and break their 7000 dollar plasma cell tv and then cut the strap with a pair of scissors and say it broke. IDIOTS!!
- StickyShoez, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36I still think all this strap talk is crazy. Even if the strap does break, why in the world would you ever let go of the paddle? I don't see very many golfers letting go of their driver off the tee and last time I checked golf clubs don't come with wrist straps.
These kids launching wii-motes accross the livingroom need to just calm down, and take a hefty dose of riddlin. - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Ritalin is an ADD-treatment, not a spell checker. ;)
- DolphinGL, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23@webguy
Did you even read the article? - Aiwanei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19@f8pc != means does not equal, it is used in math and programming.
- bs0l, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18kevin said that 2 hours before you.
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Why doesnt he sue his friend?
- bmwboy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Of course there is no recall...it's a Wiicall.
Good move on Nintendos part though....really tells the public they give a rats ass about their plasmas... - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You're being dugg down because the point you made has already been made 500 times.
- davidsmero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It's not the straps, its the user. People are careless and swinging and throwing these around like retards. You don't need to "wind-mill" the remote when bowling.
- lucask, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8RTFA
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What kind of idiot cuts it with scissors, your supposed to pull it until it breaks so it looks more frayed and real.
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@f8pc
well.... this is digg... so != should be common knowledge
unless you are like my DS lecturer and like to use < >
how the hell else are we supposed to show inequality?
still webguy2k should learn to RTFA... replacement != recall
I am sure that Nintendo will put the stronger wrist strap in future Wii-motes - Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Aw why's this guy getting dugg down, his Wiicall joke made me think of elmer fudd, and who doesn't like remembering elmer fudd?
That wascawy WABBIT! - bmwboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Even though people are stupid, are they really stupid enough to buy "enhanced straps"?
That would be a horrible PR move.... - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The news is reporting this whole thing very inaccurately, they're making it sound like people must send the entire unit in to replace the strap on a controller.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"...a summons by a manufacturer or other agency for the ***return of goods*** or a product already shipped to market or sold to consumers but discovered to be defective, contaminated, unsafe, or the like." (my emphasis)
I don't know what definition you're using, but this isn't a recall. - Broccoli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I love the way people tried to make it seem like a serious flaw with the wii.
- rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is Microsoft FUD, most recently spread by blatant shill Hiawatha Bray in the Boston Globe, who often publishes MS press releases verbatim as if they were original journalism. He parroted the crap about smashed television screens, etc., while calling it a recall and ridiculing Wii players. It's all very silly and sad, the corporate equivalent of political campaign dirty tricks and shill reporters. Sigh, would be nice to get some respectable journalism in the game field someday...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well, i can say that i did break the strap on mine by throwing it. however, it was semi intentional. i got mad playing boxing, and i wanted to throw the controller, then i thought that would also be a good test of the strp strength. well, i thre it as hard as i could, and the strap broke. however, it significantly slowed down the controller (definately would not be enough to break a tv). but it did not break halfway through like all those pictures are showing. the thing part came out of the little plastic piece where the thicker part of the strap is.
it seems the part that is glued in is much weaker than the rest of the strap. so all of these stories are looking that much more non legit. - jackpot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7So when does common sense warrant an article? I knew this wasn't a recall, Nintendo never told me my product was faulty. They were just kind enough to replace the strap if I happened to be a dumbass.
- alantocheri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's really interesting considering I just filled out a form on nintendo.com for new straps. And here's the difference between them: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/straps.jsp
And here's the form to fill out to get new ones:
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/strapreplace.jsp - logicnazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One doesn't release the racket in tennis like one releases a bowling ball.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From the article:
"Remember that the Wii Remote is responsive enough to detect minor movements – so excessive and forceful actions are not necessary. Therefore we recommend not to use excessively rapid, violent or **wide swinging motions** while using the Wii Remote during game play."
Too bad all of their own TV commercials for Wii contradict this statement. - washingtonydc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I think at least 720p would really show that Nintendo cares about plasmas.
- HRF1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry guys. This constitutes as an recall... And the same goes for my DS Lite AC adapter. :(
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Umm... I'm guna go with the obvious here:
TOTAL WIICALL!
Sorry, I kow it's not true and all but it needed to be said. - vanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to think that people were just being idiots and throwing the remotes, then during a game of baseball, my friend completely lost the remote when swinging, and the strap snapped right off. It didn't damage the TV, but the wiimote plastic is cracked and there's a rattle inside the wiimote now. I called up Nintendo and they're sending me a brand new one. Great customer service.
It IS an issue, even if it's a small issue. Even though one of my wiimotes had a bad strap, I'm still a very happy customer because of the way they handled the situation with me. - b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nintendo needs to do either one of two things:
1) The media obviously has blown things out of proportion and inaccurate reporting (recall) about what's happening and Nintendo could prove loss of profit and sue
2) Or better for Nintendo for still being the "nice" guy, have the media run an ongoing spot that they mis-reported the recall and tell the real story
#2 is better because it's the media saying they're wrong instead of Nintendo ( I say vs you say scenario) and Nintendo comes off looking better because of that.
either way Nintendo must, must get the word out that it is not a recall and the media blew it out of proportion because I've spoken to so many people who's first knowledge of the Wii is that things are wrong with the controller and don't buy it. These aren't "in the know" people, these are people in the same demographic that Nintendo is chasing after now, the non-gamer. - chromium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I totally agree. I was at my parents house yesterday and I mentioned my Wii and the first thing my mum and sister asked was "are you getting a replacement strap?". This is coming from people who know nothing about gaming.
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@devindotcom:
I would have thought that most of the damage would have been done with tennis. The bowling seems pretty tame compared with the motions of tennis.
Oh well, I filled out the form for some replacement straps because there are a couple of 12 year olds using the Wii sometimes. I've setup a limit as to how close they can get to the TV, which they follow. They always make sure that each one has the strap secured. The replacement strap will just give me a little more piece of mind. Although the Wii handcuffs that someone made seems more and more like the perfect solution to protecting my 61" DLP... - iruel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i'm glad someone posted something. there have been articles in my local newspapers about this "Wii have a problem" and "wii recall" about some girl who broke her tv because she let go of the wiimote. this "problem" in no way is nintendo's fault, just like the baseball analogy that some posted. this whole thing reminds me of the xbox 360 bad press. even today i talk to people and they say "dont' those things overheat and break?" i just hate ignorance!
/end rant - Elric1977, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can still fill out the form and get new ones. But the word Recall is a bit of an over-reaction.
- GezusK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, you got it right at the end. You are an idiot and I won't be getting off my ass to play Wii games. Prefer the real thing....you know...actual tennis, bowling, and such. Might try it sometime. It'll improve your grip so that you don't throw your toys.
Nintendo should have just left straps off. Perhaps then people would take a little responsibility. - doshindude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1inaccurate.
- VioletArrows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1America and Japan, but they figured it out and fixed the strap by the European launch.
- codemonkey2841, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked the digg article a couple days ago about the guy who attached a handcuff to his wiimote.
- jagnum1fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It isn't just wii sports that this is happening in. I left my wiimote just hang from my arm to untighten the strap and it broke just hanging there. No hard foreful motion and i never throw the wiimote bowling or anything, it just broke.
- HRF1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The point is, there was some sort of malfunction on a part of a device which Nintendo determined needed to be repaired. Also, could you enlighten me on the PS3 recall you mentioned in your comment because I am not familiar with that news.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5that was TOTALLY LAME!!!
- Atreiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually if you buy a wiimote from another store like Toys R Us the string connecting the strap and controller is much thinner than the one that comes with the Wii. Tho im not one to go flinging a wiimote across the room......my wife is! =(
- Drakk0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the best part of the wii is making wide flailing movements in tennis and bowling and all the other games.
for those of you saying you'd have to be a moron to break the strap well...I guess one more moron right here. I was playing bowling tonight and stupid me threw the ball...controller slipped...and popped out of my hands only to have the strap break and remote go flying into the wall. I didnt feel stupid though. felt like i was making a standard movement that had worked for me a few hundred times since I've owned the thing. So really I'm going to be racking up the comments calling people like me "idiots" to people who are jelous and like to hide behind the safety of a keyboard and would never get off their asses and PLAY a wii game anyways. - RichesToRags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Who has called it a recall? "
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/breaking_news/16246087.htm - b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@broomett
the "media" I refer to are the ones that my sister, sisters-in-law, co-workers, again any non-traditional gamer that's heard about this has heard about it via the news. Whatever specific source that is, the 'news' is mainstream enough for them that it has given them a mis-perceived notion of what the Wii is/does.
as for the pointed lips/ass comment, go ***** yourself. - TheSalmonThief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, Nintendo UK at least (I would assume NOA, as well) is offering a replacement strap, if you feel yours is in need of replacement...
http://www.n-europe.com/news.php?nid=9899 - Freakwilly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4A recall is where there is something wrong with each or a group of units made at a specific time. They are all flawed in a similar method.
They are doing replacements for people who were wreck-less and did not abide by Nintendo's original "How to" manual. So truthfully, they are not responsible for giving out replacements. -
