- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42Wii Sports is fun. Period. I just got in from a neighborhood New Year's Eve party and everyone wanted to at least give Wii Sports a try. It was great fun to watch a whole family playing a game of tennis right in the middle of the party.
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Hey ***** you TIME, don't mock Colecovision.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Yeah, that Amazon.com thing was such a fad. /sarcasm
- Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37Why do they imply that the graphics suck? Looking at it at 480P looks pretty damn good to me
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30If it were up to me, that honor would go to Zelda, but Wii Sports is definitely a game that you can play with your whole family.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Well I had a good reply to the Zelda/Oblivion/Gears of War comment, until I accidently hit some insane key-combination and ended up at some IE7 something or other page. Arg. :/
Anyway, the main point is that while those three games are awesome, Wii Sports has managed not only to change the way we play games but it has also managed to get so many more people playing games. In one Christmas season, I was able to recruit more gamers than I've ever recruited in my entire life with other games. Hearing my mother actually ask me to play video games was something I never thought would happen but Wii Sports did it. - firepig, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24My kids invited me to play WII bowling with them tonight. It was lots of fun. WII is a great innovation. Hats off to the makers.
- OutofExile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16This shouldn't be surprising, considering the very same magazine called Wii Sports the greatest game of all time not that long ago. It would follow, then, that it's the greatest game of 2006.
Keep in mind that the people who read Digg are not exactly the mainstream society. Some here might say Wii Sports is no Legend of Zelda or Gears of War or Final Fantasy VI or whatever, but after watching four whole generations of my family wow and awe and laugh and jump up and down with excitement over Wii Sports, when none but my brother, his kids, and me previously would have bothered to touch video games, one wonders if TIME doesn't have a point. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13It's one hell of an addictive demo, but you're right, it just gives you a little taste, and leaves you craving more advanced versions of all the game styles demonstrated. I got Super Swing Golf hoping it would be a fleshed out version of Wii Sports Golf, but it was not quite as smooth. Not bad, but there's definitely some improvement to be made. I can't wait for a good tennis and bowling game. If they can pull off fighting games, that will be awesome. I can already see some wireless straps with motion sensors for your legs so you can kick in fighting games (and kick the person standing next to you by accident). Still though, my roommates and I have been playing Wii Sports pretty much every day since I got my Wii on launch day.
- Junkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Nintendo can always turn out classics.
- n0sferatu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11IMO baseball is the least fun and least realistic out of the Wii sports games.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I had 40 people over for a Christmas party and every last one of them would beg to differ. Young, old, gamer, non-gamer, male, female--everybody had a blast. Probably 3/4 of them had never heard of the Wii before, so they weren't falling for the "hype".
- brotherfranciz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The top ten "video games" list:
10. Bully (for PS2)
09. Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (for Xbox, Xbox 360, Gamecube, PS2)
08. Guitar Hero 2 (for PS2)
07. Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis (for Xbox 360)
06. Prey (for PC, Xbox 360)
05. Resistance: Fall of Man (for PS3)
04. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (for Wii)
03. New Super Mario Bros. (for Nintendo DS)
02. Gears of War (for Xbox 360)
01. Wii Sports (for Wii) - Mossman85, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Wii Sports is more of a demo than a game. It's a demo for the Wii.
- OutofExile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+816 hours a day? No offense, but I'd just as soon not play *any* game 16 hours a day. ;)
I don't think most people have time for more than an hour or two a day. Wii Sports is pretty good for that. - Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Great collection of games. I don't like to say it's "free" though, since the price of the Wii would have probably been lower like it is in Japan without the game bundled in.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7>> The Wii is the only console I've ever owned that has progressed backwards
That is largely inaccurate. If you look closely at the Wii's launch titles, you'll see that most of them are slightly better than an above average Gamecube title, with slightly higher poly counts, significantly better lighting, and much better smoke/particles. It's not a huge leap forward, but for extremely rushed launch titles that's understandable.
Don't be the idiot who assumes that a launch title is a true example of what a console is capable of. - F9Phoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Time: Video game magazine of the year.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Its more of the principle. Nintendo proved that the new controls really can make what would be a ***** game before into a classic. The game singlehandedly proved that this whole 'innovation' thing they've been hyping up really is fun... for everybody. It also singlehandedly proved that the Wii isn't going to be directly competing with the PS3 and 360, that its in a league of its own: the first and greatest party console. That's what they need to focus on, because that's what its really fun for. Invite friends over and play some Wii play, Wii sports, rayman, and Warioware; you're guaranteed to have a blast.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You are comparing late-generation games with first gen.
Toward the latter years of any game systems life, graphics and other aspects (gameplay, capabilities through workarounds, etc) will improve substantially.
The Wii's games will look better in the coming months and years. So too will the PS3's and the Xbox360's. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Try coop mode tennis with a friend, and it plays fullscreen against computer players...
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6We do say the greatest thing since sliced bread...
A phantom may be the best car, but nobody cares about it really. The civic is what people care about. - chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I agree, the graphics don't suck. That would just make it unplayable, unless you're into that *****.
:popcorn for the inevitable console pissing war: - justinm1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6People talking about how great something is after they've bought or used it isn't hype, it's called "word of mouth".
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Calling it a gimmick means you missed the boat completely. It's a significant paradigm shift in gaming, something that hasn't happened in decades.
- Pulp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I like how they say "great graphics don't make great games," and then when you go to their second pick, it's all about Gears of War's amazing graphics and detail.
- blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9And don't think it's not going onto my resume.
Awards:
"Time 2006 Person of the Year" - quaalude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Great! I always turn to Time Magazine for their opinion on the latest in the video game industry! Give me a break. I own a Wii and yes, Wii Sports will hold you over for a while AND makes for a good time with some friends over. Unfortunately that is really all it is good for. I personally cant wait until developers really get a feel for the system and start making some truly great games that play well and look stunning.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My dad is obsessed with the golf. The last time I tried to get him to play videogames (counter-strike), he flipped out and said he'd never play them again. (I guess the competition and people calling him n00b left and right kinda pissed him off)
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5People should realize that the game is not "free". You are paying at least $40 for the game...The Wii costs about $210 in the Japan and Wii Sports costs about $40. For $40 the game should have more depth, but it's great fun nonetheless (Just finished playing some Tennis).
- jeffthejiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Man, TIME don't really know what they're on about. Looks like Colecovision? Yeah right. They're just not uber-realistic, that's all. My mum said the graphics are pretty good, and that's enough, no?
The same guy gives Gears of War second place due to the "heat ripples rising off my gun barrel". He said he has quibbles about the gameplay, but it doesn't matter as long as he can stare at the graphics. Christ. Someone get this guy a movie to watch.
Saying that though, I wouldn't say that Wii Sports is the best game of the year, but its definitely the one most people have enjoyed. My parents love showing it off to everyone, and pretty much everyone who's stepped into my house in the last month has been hooked on Wii Bowling. That's pretty amazing for a video game. - jjesusfreak01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There was one copy bought for every Nintendo Wii, making it the overall best game for the Wii,
In other news, You are the person of the year! (Kinda lose their credibility after that nonsense) - MurderMystery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's awful. I haven't even seen a Wii. Everyone I know who was gonna buy one can't get their hands on it. Does anyone know any stores that has a playable display?
- Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I haven't turned on my 360 since my kids opened the Wii on Xmas morning. Having way too much fun playing Wii Sports and Rayman. The social aspect of the system shouldn't be taken lightly, in a time when we all seem to be in our own little world playing multiplayer games across the internet against total strangers. We had 9 friends over last night for New Years, and most of the night was spent playing on the Wii, and every single person there said they wanted to buy one for themselves.
Viral Consolism? - Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If said so, the entire Wii is free. I was infact buying the manual.
Stupid thing is, that there are people stupid enough to get enthousiast over something being "free". Marketing is so oblivious to anyone who thinks straight.
While i'm yadayada'ing: Nintendo is keeping everything high valued by lowering number of games and "having" a shortage. It hypes, generates lots of Wii talk on the street, great for brand awareness. Offering the goods limited in numbers creates even more demand. - Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, YOU are the person of the year!
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If the PS3 were as is and ~$250 things might be a bit different. But it isn't. For $600 dollars you can buy a rather powerful PC off ebay.
Sony was willing to gamble with their gaming market for a chance to win the next format war. Now it looks like they might just be loosing both. - darkspire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It would probably have as much to do with people ignoring everything IGN says as much as it has to do with people really not liking the PS3.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I concur with Time.
I was plugging Wii Sports all through the "Gears is #1 stories".
It's definitely the impact game of the year.
The whole industry will have to take some notice. - jesushitler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think it could possibly be the drinking game of the year, certainly not the best video game of the year.
- KyleGoetz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Dested: and that would change from what is, how? I mean, 2 years after the Halo 2 release, and I still can't play it on any PC. And then, to top it off, I'd have to run Windows Vista to play Halo 2 when it's out for PC.
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I got my Wii(finally) last Thursday, my Dad, who doesnt really play video games much but got a PS2 installed in his car for the DVD player back in 2001(and plays the occasional GTA: San Andreas) absolutely loves Wii Sports, especially golf and tennis. He first complained of the graphics, saying they should have been more realistic(not of the quality of the graphic capabilities of the wii, but he complained the miis looked cartoony and "not real enough"). He's can play on it for hours on it and completely changed his tune. Even I was surprised at the depth of the gameplay because of the Wii controls.
- standalonematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Wii could turn out to be a changing point in the game industry (or consumer electronics). With the DS getting stronger and beginning to dominate the portable game market and the Wii having a chance to win this generation (I believe it will overtake the 360 in sales this year) - it could cause the entire industry to have a change in focus. More innovative gameplay and not better graphics/sound are what will become the focus. We could be due for some virtual boy gimickness - but this industry is ready for a change.
- klick37, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have a Wii and enjoy Wii Sports, though it could use a few more added things such as more control. The Wii also doesn't have many good games as of right now (though I really enjoy Metal Slug Anthology and Zelda), so I hope developers can continue to produce innovative games. The one thing I do love, though, is around Christmas when I had much of my family over at my house, A 5-year-old nephew of mine was playing tennis against my 80-something grandfather and they both enjoyed the hell out of it. Anything that can span that sort of age gap and remain fun at the same time does indeed deserve that reward.
- cwncool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Golf is my favorite game on Wii Sports.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Enter the Matrix" sold millions as well. Are you saying it should have been game of the year for 2003? Sales is no concrete indicator of quality.
- Flunk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Anyone who gives Wii Sports a 10/10 or a Game Of The Year award is reviewing the console rather than the game. You really can't put Wii Sports before Zelda or Gears of War.
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2### More innovative gameplay and not better graphics/sound are what will become the focus.
I don't see that happening any time soon. Just look at the DS, while you have a few innovative first party titles there, you also have a lot of third party crap. Publishers using the DS as a dumping place to make some quick money instead of using it as a way for creative new games, its sad, but its the way it is. Unless Nintendo opens up the Wii for independent developers I just don't see much innovation coming there either, since the big publishers just don't care, instead they pick a successful franchise like FarCry and just do a crap port to the Wii and make some money with it. They don't care about the console, they don't care about the quality of their games, they only care about the money and to make that. With independent developers Nintendo could get people who care about their games and not just do franchise recycling, but so far the door is still pretty much closed in that direction, its really time for Nintendo to open up. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"You really can't put Wii Sports before Zelda or Gears of War."
If you judge a game by purely addictive gameplay that's accessible to everyone, Wii Sports blows Zelda and GoW out of the water. Every friend/neighbor/relative who has played Wii Sports at my house decided immediately to buy their own Wii. Neither Zelda nor GoW could have accomplished that. Not even close. - chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i just noticed the bad grammar. oops. happy new year, everyone.
