- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66this may be off subject, and extremely nerdy, but I brought in the wii to work for a few coworkers to try out in the company gym. After playing wii boxing for a good 2 hours, a group of guys decided to start a company Fight Club...wii (I guess I just broke rule 1).
We've had Wii boxing tournaments for the past 2 weeks on fridays after work now. It's fun, a decent workout, and helps blow off a little steam since things are pretty stressful with the beginning of the year and new clients approaching.
Just thought I'd share. - mvanhorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65When does the Richard Simmons Wii fitness game come out?
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29The guy already looks fit enough...it's fatties like me who should be part of the experiment.
The only problem is...I can't find a Wii anywhere. - tdishman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29You obviously haven't read the article, nor realized that the Wii hasn't been out for 6 weeks yet. The experiment hasn't been concluded.

- bram, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26I think it is still in the Closet.
- rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Thanks for the maths there mr know it all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1830 pounds? Christ, this is a Wii not total virtual reality.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Yes, playing games is such a waste of time. Just like reading and posting on Digg.
- ccunni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20awesome project. anxious to see the results.
- senseigmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Set up a chalkboard with odds and start taking bets.
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Actually, there is a game called "Wii Health" coming out some time next year. My bet is that might be some sort of exercise program that can track movements and accuracy with a basic aerobic workout - but nothing's been confirmed yet.
Should someone actually make that game, however, and advertise it during Oprah, it will make a mint - if only because I told my wife about it, and *she* went nuts for the idea (and she's already hogging the Wii to play the sports game). - Zipko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1530 minutes of moderate exercise 5-6 days a week is about what's recomended by health organizations as being acceptable for staying fit. I'm assuming that's why he picked those numbers.
What is weak is how many people can't even meet those minimum requirements. - mvanhorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Really cool idea
But for some reason I can't get into boxing, I find it the least responsive of all the games. Anynoe else notice this? - toolpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9i got mine the day it came out, i was one of many taints that waited overnight. I have lost 5 pounds already.
- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm much more interested in the results as opposed to the declaration that you're going to do it. Anybody want to try something similar with DDR and see who wins?
- firelord24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This is an awesome idea and I've already put my long hair on the line for it. The bet is lose 30 lbs in 90 days or shave your head. The Wii is my key to not going bald before my time! And for the record I'm 240 looking to get to 210, I figure 10 of it is sheer laziness pudge.
- blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Um, DDR wins. I don't think there's much competition there.
- trawin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+730 minutes is all you need. Also, I think everyone is over analyizing the experiment. The point isn't finding out the EXACT science of weight loss. it's about the effects of playing the wii. Beats the hell out of NOT doing anything, or just sitting on the couch.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yeah I mean no one spends 30 minutes a day gaming...you tit.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1030 minutes is weak.
do like an hour or two - Zipko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You know that's not healthy? Weight loss programs are supposed to lose about a pound a week. You can probably do it, but once you stop the program the weight will come back until you can work it off naturally.
I did the same kind of thing for wrestling, and have seen others do it. People can drop 10 pounds in a week or two easy enough to make weight, but it's not healthy and the weight comes back once the season ends. - Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, 30 minutes a day of activity is the baseline for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Less than 30 minutes a day of purposeful exercise activity (i.e. deliberately doing an activity for the sake of exercise, or actiiviity in this case?) is considered sedentary by most exercise researchers. - saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Personally, I can't get into boxing either. But when my Wii and I visited a couple of friends who were at first reluctant to get off the couch and really get into it, this was the result:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/saska/307348147/ - firelord24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Can be hard to find people to play with at home or whatever weird hours you are up. This is a step between vegging out on WOW and going outside.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You have not played the boxing game then. I get so worked up over the game! I punch the air so hard I end up straining my muscles.
- McShaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You obviously haven't seen the boxing game.. check this out, and you'll see how someone can get tired playing the game....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OMCwwTjvuM - optimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7not enough control in this experiment. of course, I wouldnt need an excuse to play the Wii for more than 30 minutes a day. But, I am assuming with this test, you are playing only WiiSports, and no other gaming that uses your hand/arm
- jessebs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Would really love to see the results per week during the test and a final wrap up at the end so I dont have to wait.
- Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think the idea is that it's as much of a workout as you make it.
You could sit on the couch and flick your wrist a bit, or you could get up and get into the game.
You get out of it what you put into it. Just like anything in life. - caselogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5coming from a health professional and a wii fanboy at the most he would get would be better use of this muscles. during an exercise program you will develop strength from newly developed muscles at around the 6 week mark but the muscles that he already have will be firing better than they would before. 30 minutes of wii sports is not enough burned calories (maybe 300 at the very high end if he did nothing but play boxing over and over again) or aerobic workout (because of time between events and intensity) to increase VO2 Max, Resting Heart Rate or Weight loss.
Plus you could never really increase the intensity to adjust to your body getting use to playing. But good for him for being consitant. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well.. your swinging your arm too.. That counts for something. Kind of like doing jumping jacks with 1/4th of your body, with relatively long pauses between the movements.
Yea.. I think this is going to have minimal effect too. But I do think that for people who are -completely- sedentary, it's a big step up. - Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That sounds almost exactly like me.
I hit my high point of 238 last August (I'm 6'2", fairly broad build, 29 years old). I basically just changed my eating habits (less junk, more fruit/veggies, smaller portions, no more midnight snacks etc) starting the beginning of September and I'm down to 220lbs now. If I'd added more cardio exercise to the mix, I could easily see myself being 210.
If this guy has success with his Wii program I will definitely pick one up and try it myself. I've always despised going to the gym or running just for the sake of running, but have always loved playing active sports. So if it's successful, this could be the most fun exercise equipment on the planet! I'm hopeful that it works for this guy. - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5all my friends love the boxing, probably because its the most violent game in Wii Sports
- Braingoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you realy want a work out play Rayman Raving Rabbidds for 30 Min a day. some of those games are rough.
- adougherty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Health experts say that at most, someone should only lose a pound or two a week. 90 days is 12 weeks, which is 12-24 lbs. 30 lbs is just plain unhealthy.
- joketter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Reminds me of a Research Study of DDR when I was in college. Really good results.
- GFKSpot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hmmm...I think that should tell you something if your arms are sore from waving a small tiny controller around. Seriously, im not trying to be an *****, im stating a fact that if your arms are sore from that, you should use them more often.
- citizensagainst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm so glad someone is doing this but I agree, results would be more obvious in someone who at least *looks* out of shape. Still, I might be able to justify buying one for myself if I see that someone is improving their body with it. Nintendo has done a great thing by getting gaming off the chair. I'm much better at bowling than DDR. I'll be watching this closely.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Great idea! Would rather follow this guys progress than that Subway dude :p
- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You should use traineo (www.traineo.com) to log your stats - they do graphs etc.
- firelord24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The key is not just sitting there and swinging the plastic around. Sure you can do it but it defeats the purpose. I've instituted a "No Sitting" rule in order to prevent just that. Besides, whats the point of having a new revolution in gaming if we just sit on our buts and try to figure out ways to go back to doing the least amount of work to beat the game.
- csimpkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LOL. Then the wrist strap breaking would REALLY be a problem!
- maisis00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I shall definitely be interested in seeing the results.
- unthink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2someone out there knows where its at, yaknow... this is exactly what people want, an entertaining workout, rather than the boring 30 minute jog, well for some people. I cant wait for "Street Fighter OMEGA" on Wii hah that would be fun: !!!!Shoryuken!!!
- ShyGuy91284, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In terms of weight loss, the Wii will probably not do much. (Never used one, so I could be way off. This is just an assumption) My Snapple cap told me (and they are never wrong) you would have to play ping pong for 12 hours to loose a pound. I would probably liken playing a Wii and putting yourself into it to the point where you won't need to take a break every 5 or 10 minutes to be similar to casual ping pong in terms of activity.
- ninjadave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Boxing is also my least favorite. It seems oddly unresponsive, and looking through your translucent Mii head to see the fighter seems kind of silly.
I also went 3 Rounds with a friend and knocked him out nearly 3 times and they still chose him as the winner! Robbed! - esaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had this idea after the first day of playing wii sports when my entire body was malfunctioning and i looked like a hobo at work.
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Especially "Bunnies Don't Give Gifts"!
My arms are burning. - wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my friend played my wii boxing and was swewating a whole lot, he really got into it, hes a wrestler and a good one,so hes not fat and sweats at everything he does, and he still got a good workout from it, the wii is an excellent workout if you make actions close to the real thing.
