- Zreitan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+84That's how Jesus played the Wii
- djrobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73That is actually a really inventive solution. Not only that, but it sets the mood just right ;)
- farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+64You need 2 points of light, so a fireplace wouldn't work.
- arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -4/+64I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want an open flame next to my TV.
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -1/+58A comment from a user on youtube (not mine just thought it was funny):

What the hell? How does it connect to the system? - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -16/+66THERE. ARE. TWO. LIGHTS!
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49Two fireplaces then! Duh!
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40I totally agree with you. Unlike most Americans, my T.V. is made mostly of dried plant matter and hay, so if a candle was right next to it, the T.V. might go up in blazes.
- KingPsyz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36great... you broke the internet
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32I don't know about you, but the only the only time I'm in "a low power situation" is when there is a power outage. :)
- spyder91, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28And now I can play when the power goes out... err... wait...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+36genius. candle-fire-heat-IR - why didn't i think of that?
it should also work if your lcd tv is over a fireplace. - NOFXY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25what faults exactly?
- guybrush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25This also works if you want to alert people that the British are coming by sea.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Haha. You need the proprietary Candle-to-Wii converter cable available from the Nintendo store for $39.95. Sadly, it's out of stock until the new year!
- TheThing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22You need to power the LEDs. That is why it is connected to the system.
- skifreak107, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Get some candles :)
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21that was really conclusive in a nice dark room
I bet he was playing with bigfoot as well. - Yurkshat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17What do you attach the candle to a bunch of explosives?
Last time I checked candles just fizzle out when they are done. - pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15No wonder my cursor goes nuts sometimes, I have a few candles near the TV and one on the coffee table.
- Rich7ejr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The sensor bar gets power from the console and emits two IR lights. The sensor bar doesn't actually sense anything; everything is done within the Wii-mote and the Wii itself.
- drall.kj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Now I can play during a black out....
Wait Damn no I can't - gr8edchz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I hope you already filed your patent for your active combustion thermal generator dynamic sensor activation device!
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9On the up-side, when you go to the Sensor Calibration screen, the Wii demonstrates that it can clearly see all four points at once. So it's possible that a firmware update could turn on this functionality.
More likely, however, is that someone figures out how to connect from a PC to the controller over Bluetooth... at that point, it wouldn't be hard to write a driver that would work with a larger grid of points, at least when using the Wii-mote with your computer. - UCFMark, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Good point- it's obviously more novel than practical... but if you're in a low power situation and absolutely have to play Wii... I guess this would save a few watts of electricity.
- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@zeeky: yes, as long as you aren't doing anything that requires you to point the Wiimote at the screen.
Excite Truck, eg, would work fine, as would Wii Sports once you're in the game.
The loader menus, Mii channel, Zelda, etc, not so much. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow, I can definitely confirm this.
i also tried four points of light (two from the sensor bar, two from the candles). I was hoping that there was a chance that you could set up a grid of LED's, and as long as the Wii saw a smooth transition from one to the other, that it would let you move around smoothly. (when I play, it seems like the LED's often go out of view when you turn the controller too far, and a wider grid of LED's would fix this).
Unfortunately, the Wii-mote doesn't work this way. When I would move away from one light source, the cursor would jump backwards a bit... it only tracks the two points of light, and if they disappear, it finds two more points of light and just assumes they're the same points (eg. in situations where an optical mouse could have figured out that it's multiple points moving smoothly). This isn't surprising, I guess, but it would have been really good if it actually worked more like an optical mouse. - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9How odd, this story is on the front page twice for me
I don't mean a dupe, I literally mean the same submission - bocaJWho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10ST:TNG Chain of Command
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14"THERE. ARE. TWO. LIGHTS!"
It looks like you'll be dugg down, but I get the reference. :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That's why the cord for the sensor bar is longer than my block
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Like, for example, being connected to the Wii. Anyone with a projector is going to have the Wii far away from the actual screen, making it impossible to use the sensor bar.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah sorry, my bad for using candles instead of a modem
- OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That's an instructional video for a future adult themed wii game...
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7First of all, the sensor bar does not use more power then 1 watt. Candles prob produce much more.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5... though the lighter needs to be ~2.5 feet away from the Wii-mote at minimum.
It doesn't seem to work with IR light that's not a single point... eg. I pointed it at my stove burner, and nothing showed up.
The best thing to try that I've found so far though is CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS. It's amazing. Lots of lights on the string show up really well. It's obviously doing a lot of image processing, so individual points will appear and disappear, even at maximum sensitivity. But still, point it at a string of christmas lights and it can see a whole lot of them at once, it's kind of cool looking. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5For what it's worth, I confirmed that this works. It's pretty easy to do yourself... just go to the Sensor Calibration screen, and stick a lighter in front of the Wii-mote and move it around... you'll see a dot on calibration monitor move around in sync with your lighter.
- TheLastGnu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4More of a gamer or general geek's playground I would say.
- Zreitan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5me too!..weird i refreshed and it went away
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't wait until they have THESE built into the television.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You don't want a cord you just want laserz HUH MISTER? IS THAT IT?
- diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Highlight, right click, "Search web for..."
Never get Dugg down for asking a question again! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have a gigantic frontscreen projector ... the problem is I can't really place the sensor at or under the screen because the console is at the other side of the room. Anyone have calibration tips etc.
- kaytrio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and I on the opposite shore wiil bii
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, a trip to a Radioshack could actually solve your problems (a breadboard, two IR LEDs, batteries, some wire), but you'd have to read up a little on how to do that.
Another option is to simply make an extension cord. Just get two 5' or 10' lengths of wire, like shielded twisted pair, cut the sensor bar's wire, and splice your wire into. Honestly, it's not that hard at all. You split the cord in the middle because that way the wire is still secured to the bar, and the other end is still the custom plug Nintendo used.
The other way - just to what I do, and wait for an extension cord to come out in two weeks. Pelican will release one, as will a bunch of other people. - dumpling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Neat idea, but the Wiimote works fine with NO sensor bar (http://digg.com/gaming_news/Wii_sensor_bar_doesn_t_send_any_signal_to_the_Console)
I do realize that triangulation isn't possible without the two beacons, so it works better with cadles/sensor bar, but I'm sure there are some cooler forms of light that can be used. - AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ROFL LOLORZ!
- diggn_it, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like how I got massively dug down for asking a question where I was ultimately correct. Thanks digg.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's a lot like the zapper when you think about it.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5yep, just power.
