- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+117To be honestly fair to both companies... they both have sold just about every unit they've made available.
In the long run I think the wii will probably sell better than the ps3 just due to pricing points. - kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+74You know what, I am a Sony hating fanboy, but I read that article and I don't see what the submitter's point is. What are they supposed to say? You take the news and you try to make the best of it.
Now if they said, "You just watch, Nintendo and Microsoft may have sold more, but that's because they sold to all the morons, leaving the sophisticated elite to us," then I'd agree that they are a bunch of arrogant pricks. Not that they aren't a bunch of arrogant pricks (they are), but this article is not a good example of it. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -12/+47Actually, I read Sony's words, and they are no different than Xbox touting its billion Live downloads or consoles sold. Its all marketing PR. ALL of the do it.
CHipping Sony for it alone only shows the problem with your ow attitudes... - theflavor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35Lets not forget that both Wii and PS3 are 100% sold out at all retailers and that Nintendo and Sony have revised their predictions to both have 1 million units in the pipeline by the end of year
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -11/+38You know, if Steve makes 10 consoles, and Joe makes 5 consoles, and they both sell all their consoles, doesn't that mean Steve outsold Joe?
I don't understand this whole Wii outsells Sony deal. We all know Nintendo had more units than Sony. Sony sold out of all their units and I am sure Nintendo did too. OF COURSE they're going to outsell them THEY HAD MORE UNITS. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27OK, seriously, what do you guys expect the Sony rep to say? "The Wii is kicking our ass"?
No, this spokesperson's job is to spin things positively for Sony, not to tell the truth. He's not going to issue a statement talking about how well Nintendo and Microsoft are doing, and if he did he should be fired. - tknaught, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Anyone else glad to see both consoles are in high demand?
If the gaming industry is doing well, that means more high quality games being produced.
Also, with the software upgradeable nature of this generation of consoles, close competition between all three manufacturers should lead to plenty of new features and dropping prices on services like XBox Live, Virtual Console, and the Playstation Store. - Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -24/+47I think it will sell better due to the availability of good games...
- mathmanjeffy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17As a third party game developer, I wouldn't develop for either Joe or Steve. 10 units just isn't enough market space. It isn't initial sales that drive success of any hardware, its third-party software support. Unfortunately for Sony (and steve & joe), third party support seems fairly correlational with initial hardware sales. People are in the business to make money, really for very little else.
That being said, I hardly think 1 month's sales substantiates a large enough sample set for sales. Demand will be reflected in February, when every console manufacturer has enough supply and demand for leisure items in general is way way low. - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15They're selling out every unit they have. People quote Wii numbers like there are PS3s just sitting on shelves somwhere.
- OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13This is not news. You could expect Any gaming company to say that, jeez.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I don't get it. What are you guys expecting them to say here? They said there were supply issues. Technically the ps3 IS one of the most "sought after" items out there (even if people are just flipping them on ebay). And then they went on to say they will keep making more of them. They're not going to start crying at the podium and proclaiming their stupidity to everyone.
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Well, you just mentioned. So much for taking us forward there Armstrong.
- goldy74, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20I bet they're singing the same tune in about 19 days when there are 500K units in N. America.
- oSiBo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19"Bla bla bla I'm not hearing you" - Sony Corporation
- rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Got to love Sony...
1 million by Dec 31... lets see. - ptaylor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Isn't today 12/13?
700,000+ units in 18 days?
Even Jesus is saying that he has to see this... - jtbauki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9XBox 360 didn't have competition. They had a 365 days headstart.
- dpatrickb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I was expecting Sony to have this attitude. They're being clever by ignoring the Wii, especially after the kafuffle a few weeks ago when they said that the Wii is fun. In the end, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony/Nintendo were more or less equal in terms of sales. I also wouldn't be surprised if Sony beats Nintendo. After all, this has happened the past two years when Nintendo still tried to equal their opponents.
Oh, and in terms of bias, I have owned every Ninntendo console (and handheld) since the NES. Currently, I have the Wii and am trying to sell it. I was looking forward to the channels, online experience, and of course the Wiimote, but I believe all are flawed. I plan to some day, when I have an HD TV, purchase a 360 or ps3. But for now, my powerful PC will do. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"one million PS3's in the pipeline by December 31, 2006."
Clever wording... too bad the end of that "pipeline" comes out in March 2007. - Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I like living in my dyslexic world way to ruin it for me....
- Waterispoison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's just a tpyo...
- pHr3ak3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Holy *****...what the hell is with you people?! everything sony says...even if its completely true, corporate *****...is wrong. NO, that entire statement is true, makes no reference to either the Wii or the 360 and has nothing to do with fanboydom but sonys stock investors...take your heads out of your asses and get on with your lives...
- Erroneus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A warning about playfuls.com, they link to programs with spyware/malware, so stay away from the downloads.
- fakesinatra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm so F*ing sick of these stories.
SONY CAN'T SELL UNITS THAT IT DIDN'T MAKE.
These stories would be interesting if Sony and Nintendo had shipped the same number of consoles. - ttiwguitar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8exactly.
- pardonmedoug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Please don't feed the PR trolls, thank you.
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I didn't know the Xbox 360 came out last year...
I'm getting sick and tired of people making their judgments based on one month of sales. Give it up, people, neither the Wii, the 360, or the PS3 can claim victory (or defeat) after only 30 days. - ptaylor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ esaks
Same thing in Best Buy. Guy opened up the display to reset it and I'm not sure how the thing gets air. It's like putting the PS3 in a dorm fridge with a bunch of wires and plugs and expecting it to "breathe." Freezes every time. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Yeah its true the PS3 sales are slumping on eBay but its a more expensive system and most people have predicted that demand will be low after the initial early adopters finish drooling over it. The Wii is inexpensive and you don't have to own a Fancy HD TV to really get the most from it. I would buy a Wii myself if I could find one, I wouldn't consider a PS3 till its under $400 or I suddenly win the Lotto.
- kplayr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13FTA: 419,000 PSP + 664,000 PS2 + 197,000 PS3 = a *****-ton more than 476,000 Wii
Inaccurate, Sony waaaaaaay outsells Wii. - ForlornHope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I like how they say they plan to have a million "in the pipeline". What counts as in the pipeline? On store shelves? On the plane to the store? Finished manufacturing? Started manufacturing? Pre-ordered by stores?
- redback, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9the fact is that game devlopers might look at these numbers and once again return to making games for nintendo
- lanchfn21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sales on eBay have slumped because eBay is over saturated with them and they are marked up too high. A lot of people don't have a problem paying the actual cost of the system. They don't want to pay more when they can just wait and get them in stores.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Sony's quote for the people to lazy to click the link
"Sony Computer Entertainment America is very pleased with the NPD data for November, showing outstanding sales for all of its platforms. These figures clearly demonstrate the strength of the PlayStation family of products in the US market. PlayStation 3 remains one of the most sought after items this holiday season, selling through almost immediately in all retailers once placed on store shelves. We will continue to utilize airfreight delivery for the PlayStation 3 to assure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers through the end of the year. And while initial day-one launch shipment goals weren't achievable due to early manufacturing issues, those problems have been resolved and we do remain focused on having one million PS3's in the pipeline by December 31, 2006."
This is almost seems like it's word for word the same statement that Microsoft released around the same time last year about the Xbox 360 - j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4At least there is a display unit running. They just have a ***** commercial running on the Wii.
- negativenancy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's called MARKETING, and you are absolutely blind if you don't see that 99% of ALL companies (yes, even Nintendo, Microsoft, and Johnson and Johnson) do exactly the same. In fact, this is pretty mellow compared to some of the crazy ***** said these past few months by ALL parties.
- tpaine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7of course they are going to say that. They do have investors after all and they have to paint a sunny picture of the future. Don't get me wrong, I am a nintendo fanboy, and I think sony has made a lot of mistakes with the ps3 but what we are seeing now is nothing new. Their sales are suffering because of a lack of supply not of demand, which lites up sony execs eyes with dollar signs .... or Yin signs I guess
- Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I dunno. There are still quite a few available here - for a somewhat reasonable price...
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=ps3&category0=&submitSearch=Search - crgnetworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We the only two people who caught this?
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This is a stupid ***** article and has no business being on the front page, can we all say "DUH". The title and the description are atrocious too.
- davewashere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Can we please stop digging these video game console sales stories? Until all 3 major companies are able to produce enough units to meet consumer demand, sales figures are absolutely meaningless.
- jaz677, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The eggs have crashed into the wall but there are no black birds in sight.
- maj0rm0j0, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Sony's statement sounds like it was written by Bush's speech writers regarding the war in Iraq! Totally oblivious to what is actually going on.
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've read some articles how certain chains of stores didn't even use an actual PS3 system to run their displays. I don't generally base my opinion of something based on how morons use a product incorrectly.
"My gaming console burned out after I locked it in an air-tight cabinet. What a piece of garbage." - erwanl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sony didn't make a mistake decided how many units they would produce, they wanted to produce more but they had problems in their production line. Blu-Ray is also a reason, it is hard to produce and is limiting their production capacity.
- chkltcow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Cornstarch:
I've been to 3 locations that had PS3s for sale...... but I've yet to see a Wii in person. There ARE PS3s just sitting on the shelves in some places. - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nintendo beat Sony last month. Sony beat Nintendo this year. Depends on how you look at it.
...
And...Raving Rabbids? Over Resistance? Honestly? Come on, now. - IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Can you please tell me again how Sony "resopnds"?
