- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49guess this means its ok to buy hardware on release day, because it can just be updated if there are bugs...
... Oh wait... its Nintendo, nvm about the bugs! XD - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24updateable firmware also brings the possibilities of hacks (alla PSP and DS)
homebrew anyone? :) - achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22"It has been reported..." Talk about weasel words.
Worst article ever. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Yeah, somebody tell me why this is suprising or interesting for a wireless product. What would be suprising and front page worthy is something like this: "Wii Firmware IS NOT UPDATABLE!! WTF?"
- justin22290, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15i think we need a Wii or nintendo section because anything with Wii in the title hits te front page.
I'm not knocking it, i plan on geting one. But, Im sure a few people are sick of the nintenboys geting 8 Wii articles a day on the front page. - doug_brit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Believable info...yes
Credible info......no - Peterh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12as much as I agree that DRM sucks (really, I do) I don't think it's quite so evil on game systems that are meant to be the only means of using the "protected" data... as opposed to music/movies where I want to be able to convert it to whatever format I want and watch/listen to it however and whenever I see fit.
- pokemogu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Nintendo Japan is officially saying that Wii OS is updatable.
Source:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/topics/interview/vol1/03.html
竹田: Wiiというのは、売ったあとでも任天堂が本体O.S.の更新の形で関与していくことのできるはじめてのマシンなんですね。
Takeda: Wii is the first Nintendo console that we can take part after a shipment via OS update. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And if there is any question on whether it could be updated, I still wouldn't give that link any credence. Pure speculation with nothing to back it up on a site I have never heard of.
- Dested, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And Hacks!
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And Mods!
- panzerfinder15, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18I don't think this is really news, Nintendo has always said that their WiFi Connection will be used ot download patches and updates.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Man, everybody start writing! Anything can make it to the front page today!
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6patches? we don't need no stinking patches.
/lame joke - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not to cry foul here but how is this "news"? The Xbox had upgradable firmware in 2001, PC's have had it forever...hell the PSP has it. If im not mistaken the PS1 also had upgradable firmware via game cd's which is how they blocked modchips for a short time. Yes its good to have but it should be a given in this day and age.
- Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I personally hate DRM, but today it's a reality that we're gonna have to live with.
Nintendo will be using a DRM system of their own to restrict people from doing unauthorized copying of the games you can buy on the virtual console, I'm sure that by having the console be firmware upgradeable, they can fix holes in their DRM system, when it gets cracked (Any DRM system gets cracked sooner or later). - Zreitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Frankly id be surprised if it WASNT
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wish there were some type of DRM to inhibit copying of Virtual Console games, while allowing me to at least play the Virtual Console games I've purchased on a friend or family member's Wii console via SD card or USB.
I know that there's a trade off for convenience and protecting copyrighted property, but I sort of miss the days where I could take a game/CD to someone's house and play it, then take it home with me again... - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4HOW IS THIS NEWS? Good lord...it would be news if it wasn't upgradeable...ok. I'm done.
- blitzboy07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is also a possibility that upgrades will yield outcomes which might inhibit homebrew apps and affect gameplay. Example: PSP's firmware after 1.5
- meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4+digg ONLY because there were 2 people who didn't know/assume this. Besides, I can't regard this source as being reliable. They didn't quote any sources, just made a claim saying "it has been reported". By who? When?
For MONTHS now, developers have talked about WiiConnect24 and how they'll push new content to the system (i.e. new levelsbosseswhatever) so why wouldn't this be a means to flash the firmware?
p.s. This only opens the door for more homebrewer's minds to start a-brewin' =) If the Wii is as cheap as rumors say, I'll be picking up 2 so I can brew on one! =p - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish i was able to see more full articles and less one-sentence blogs on digg.
no digg... - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The NES, SNES and n64 had no moving parts, unlike the Playstation, Saturn etc... Having a disc player clearly induces much more potential problems. It's simple common sense.
Aside from the flawed cartridge connector on the NES, the other two ( SNES and n64 ) had very few hardware problems compared to disc based consoles.
Nintendo always used very cool-running CPU chips and clean motherboard designs, no risks of overheating problems. MS obviously pushed the 360 to its limit.
The n64 motherboard stayed much the same trough it's life, while the PS1 console had many major motherboard redesigns inside.
Same could be said about the GameCube vs PS2. Sure both had some problems with the disc drive, but again if you compare the internal mother board of the GC vs the PS2 it's night and day. The GC motherboard looks like a Japanese garden, simple and clean and didn't need any major revision, while the PS2 motherboard was a mess of daughter-boards and wires, again there was several major revisions of the PS2 internal design to try to fix problems.
Saying that the cartridge based SNES and n64 had the same proportion of hardware problems than disc-based (mechanical) consoles is ridiculous. Try to find a used first gen PS1 that still works... Try to find a used first gen n64 that works... compare results...
It's just common sense, only revisionist kids could envision things otherwise. - Joeymad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is one of the most content lacking articles I have ever seen.
- jefferson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"all kinds of possibilities like..................patches" muhahaha that is seriously ***** lame is that all you could put was patches comeon
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@panzerfinder15:
I read the title and thought, "Didn't the Wii official site say the same thing?" myself. But I digg it because I'm just as enthused as the next Nintendo fanatic. =/ Ha... - ka0tic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Im gonna make sure to not upgrade after firmware 1.5
- magister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And patches for expoloits that allow homebrew to run!
- doug_brit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Correction, Firmware is to update components of the console, games would be updated through patches not firmware updates. Maybe I'm splitting hairs but eh?
- danakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Spore ;-P
- Yokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All consoles should be doing this, I dont know if its just the Wii doing it.
Most good products/software have auto-update features. Such as Steam. - marioluigi123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Wii Firmware Updatable
Posted by Calum
It has been reported that the Wii's firmware will be updatable through the Internet, which will allow for patches to be added amongst other features.
Sadly, there is no other information on it, but expect more by Friday.
This article has been viewed 2706 times. "
That was the whole article. No sources, only one fact. What is this? Why is this acceptable? - Conglomerate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The 360 comes with a removable hard drive just for those occasions.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah if it were the 360 then you have to worry. But I have faith in Nintendo.
- meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2+digg fer pokemogu!
- tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well, it's not that the software was buggy on the nes, snes, n64. just manufacturing defects. what this is saying is that they can flash the firmware to add/subtract features. or to fix bugs on the os level, like the recent xbox360 dashboard update did amongst other things.
- masterspy7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uhhh, firmware upgrades the console software, so buggy games would stay buggy games.
And Oblivion is on the 360... - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Even as a diehard nintendo fanboy, I'm willing to bet that the NES, SNES, and N64 did infact have issues"
Well every electronic products had issues, but aside from the cart connector on the NES, the cartridge system on the SNES and n64 (no moving parts) were obviously less prone to break than the mechanism of a CD/DVD player. Anyone here got a still working first generation PS1? - pidey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lets see, having an upgradable OS, that means that the OS is read from a chip that can be changed. And on a console that runs something that actively tries to open connections like wiiconnect24, thats just inviting someone to make a huge virus that bricks your Wii.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had a NES, SNES, and n64, they had no defects.
- Smwbigboss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Honestly people, what did you think Wii24 was for?
- rickbauls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hows about some open source firmware?
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Say what you like about Nintendo, they have some of the best engineers (hardware AND software) in the industry.
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@masterspy
I'm aware of that, and it wasn't playable in seveal quests due to bugs that were later fixed in patchs. - hungarianhc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The Wi''s firmware will be updatable - it has been revealed- this opens up a number of opportunities such as patches."
Pretty much patches are the ONLY opportunities it makes possible haha. That and hacks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Didnt they say this at E3?
- ZephyrWest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now the question is, will Nintendo be like Sony and patch every security exploit they can and try to block homebrew?
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Qoogirl: well, you still can, so long as you have a game that's on a physical medium (Gamecube and Wii titles).
Now, when Nintendo releases a console that uses ONLY digital distribution, we need to rise up against them, overthrow their leadership, and... put Miyamoto to work on GPL'd games, or something. - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Update-able firmware is pretty nifty, but that's standard nowadays.
My wish list is that it would be easy to get Linux to run on it. Not that I have any important reason for that, mostly just for fun. - masterspy7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg down....
