- Sandwiches_Time, on 10/12/2007, -11/+32There should be a "No Word Press Sites" rule on Digg.

- cardyology, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I guess that'd be the closest you've ever been eh? A virtual lay?
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I could easily see the Wiimote being hooked in to synth software on the computer for some amazing sound creation. Imagine being able to manipulate a sound in a variety of ways (as many ways as the Wiimote measures movement) by tilting the wiimote or shaking it. Quite exciting IMO.
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17exsst:
the reason I will stop using ubuntu. - katythewolf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Drums are old hat. The Wiimote should be used for pitch shifting and complicated stuff, not clicking buttons. The movement of the Wiimote should be meaningful, not accessory to pushing buttons you could use on your keyboard. I demand a theremin hack!
- undershirt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I play guitar, and I don't think Guitar Hero is stupid. It's the not the same, but they're both fun. Same principle.
- MagicBobert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hey guys, this is Bob Somers, the creator here.
The digg effect has indeed taken down my site. I got an email from my hosting company saying that they were getting complaints from other customers on the box, so they temporarily suspended it.
Anyway, I reposted the ZIP file with the custom software and GlovePIE script on media fire:
http://www.mediafire.com/?6yqohbtmyye
Also, thanks for all your suggestions. I've actually been working on implementing a few of them. Here's what I've got so far:
+ Two Wiimotes is now working in a prototype script I've got, but because of some asynchronous sound playing issues with .NET it's kinda buggy. Also, the controller seems to be picking up beats on the upstroke as well, so I need to fix that.
+ I am looking into mapping drums into space instead of on the buttons. In other words, you hit to the left you get a bass kick, you hit to the right you get a snare hit, etc. I still need to do a lot of research here though.
+ Carl Kenner, creator of the GlovePIE tool gave me some tips on features that I didn't know about in GlovePIE. Basically, it may be possible to use MIDI drums instead of WAV files or eliminate the need for the separate .NET program altogether. Again, I need some time to experiment with this.
+ I am working on making harder hits register differently, i.e. the ability to play accented notes and softer notes based on how hard you "hit" the drum. Once again, I need to do some more research into what the accelerometer data from the remote is giving me to work with.
+ Believe me, a "drum hero" game is something I've definitely toyed with. I'm looking at possibility making a tech demo of that type of play style once I've got the above issues worked out.
I'll keep my site updated with the latest developments (assuming you don't all digg it to death again), as well as post any pertinent news on WiiLi and other sites. Unfortunately I've got final exams next week at my university so I won't really have a good chunk of time to work on this until December 16th or so. - awfulshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9haha, wii-theremin would be awesome!
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Someone make a marionette program and I'll be sold
hell why doesn't Nintendo make a mii, pupet show type dealy with like customizable sets, music and stuff, man that would be a great game for kids (ok me too)... even without the marionettes, would be fun to have a little movie maker sort of deal. - istrikelast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7in response to "No Word Press Blogs"
this is the guy that actually made the program. it's his actual blog and the source of the program. - psycx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I presume he meant that because you don't press buttons to get sounds out of a drum kit. I think could be improved by selecting the drum sound depending on the position of wii-remote at the time of the wrist flick. i.e. Far left for hi-hat. Higher up for crash. Far right for toms and in the middle for snare. In this case, pressing a button on the wii-remote would be ideal for the bass drum.
- GavinZac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6care to explain why?
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I still want Sega to make a "Samba De Amigo" port for the Wii - just use the Wiimotes/nunchuck, and you're there!
It would be made of pure awesome. - Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sounds cool. I could certainly use it to improve my "in the air tonight drum solo with my fingers on the steering wheel" ability.
- agentVivid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6are you just being mean? i think it's fairly smart, actually. pushing the limits of a device and its use while opening new doors is always a good thing.
- undershirt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's just how people with monotone voices talk when they're on camera.
- racazip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I wish he would stop ending sentences with a higher inflection.
- Leadhyena, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5GavinZac: I'll care to explain why it's stupid. The sound is triggered by a reversal of the movement of your wrist, not by an actual contact with the drum. In fact, it's a complete reversal of a drum strike; instead of banging on something, you swing down just to "bang upwards". It actually teaches your wrists to use up strokes instead of all four drummer strokes. Furthermore, the motion isn't good for your wrists in a physical sense, because the missing shock of colliding with something being compensated by a strain of the wrist to reverse the motion is actually worse for your wrists than normal drumming. The bottom line is that without tactile or force feedback you're missing the entire essence of drumming; you're swinging at noisy air instead.
- undershirt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nintendo needs to make a Drummer Hero type game. That might be really fun.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4DUUUDE they need to make a foot controller and so we can have the kick drum below. That would be sweeeet...
- rampy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's a proof of concept (I assume)
I mean it's cooler than hammering out a rythem on 4 syth pads I'd imagine...
When it gets to the point where you can use two remotes and some velocity sensitivity is factored in I think it'd be pretty cool (yes you'd probably have to do the kick drum with your thumb, but that's not so bad is it?) - rampy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought there was a demo of something like that already? There's a video on youtube somewhere with some sort of rythm/drum wii game demonstration
- kiwiboyus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dugg! Two WiiMotes with this would be awesome, especially if it was out putting Midi that could be fed into a sequencer.
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2moogerfooger is an effects box, not a theremin
- oatmeals, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.duggmirror.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great video, but what's with the out of focus-ness?
- phort99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He forgot to wear his wrist strap! He is at extreme risk of that Wii-mote flying off into the unknown at 90 mph! Be more careful next time, mister!
- sm4k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope Nintendo embraces this homebrew development. It would be cool to see some ideas that started on people's PCs end up ported to the Wii and on the Virtual Console Channel.
Alien Hominid started as a flash game, and it made it to the consoles. Hopefully that is a sign of things to come. - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's a cell phone. Probably crap on the lens or just the usual ***** VGA camera they shove in there.
- istrikelast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like in... I dunno... Minority Report.
People have been making Minority Report Becoming Reality blog entries left and right since the Wii dropped and the WiiLi guys cooked up the Wii driver. - istrikelast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This whole thing excites me. I saw this video on Joystiq earlier this morning and was waiting for someone else to Digg it.
Anywho... I'm trying this out the SECOND I get home from work. And if you can hook up two Wiimotes (I don't see why you wouldn't be able to), this will be the pinnacle of awesome homebrew (for me, anyway).
I really like all the things that are possible and coming out for the Wii mote on the PC. More exciting is I like that fact that people seem to be thinking up fun things to do with the Wii mote instead of more interactive porn (still laughing about that).
I agree with another poster here that the Wii mote in conjuction with some music programs would be REALLY cool and really fun to play around with. Pitch shifting would be cool. A compilation game like Electroplankton would be really cool to see.
Go Wiimote Homebrew!!
Now the next step is getting it so we can actually load these up on the Wii. Or not...
Also, I wonder if enough apps like this come out if Wii mote sales will go up moreso then they already are. Give people an excuse to get a Wiimote while they await being able to buy their Wii. - jiggax717, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dude you rock. i'm finishing up finals so now i have time to play =) thanks man!
- istrikelast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man... I bet this is gonna be the most famous shareware app. Once you get that tech demo up, I'm telling you, man. Open up and take PayPal donations. I'd gladly fork over a few bucks to support this project.
- Wonotch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll second that. This is some awesome work you've done. Looking forward to two "drum sticks". :)
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That would be fantastic. I would buy that as well...
- BillDoE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@indicas
You might want to look into program called Wmidi. Although it only works with a Wacom Tablet at this point. I'm sure it could be modified to work with the Wiimote. Might be difficult though because, the Wacom senses pen pressure.
http://www.nicolasfournel.com/wmidi.htm - crazy1kim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This Account Has Been Suspended....?!
- Wonotch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like Wiili.org is down as well...
- AzraelKans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually the reason you are seing this popping everywhere is because is 2:
1.-The Wii is popular and it has been launched worldwide.
2.-The USB bluetooth is cheap, easy to adapt and the driver includes a pretty complete source code (hacked but easy to read) which includes HID driver, scripter, etc. As in any coder with this code can start hacking on it and improving it. at this pace we are going to have a complete open source driver in a matter of days. - indicas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Pretty impressive.
This video gave me an incredible idea: would it be possible to use the Wii Remote as a midi controller, so you can control virtual instruments by moving the Wii Remote in space?
Edit: Seem's others were thinking along the same lines.. - ShivaOritiner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd play that. That sounds like a lot of fun. Right now the most enjoyment I get out of my Miis are picking them up and shaking them around.
- petestv, on 02/19/2009, -0/+0Sounds cool. I could certainly use it to improve my "in the air tonight drum solo with my fingers on the steering wheel" ability. http://www.bestdrumshop.com/blog/
- alfonso86, on 10/15/2008, -0/+0Can someone please help me? I'm using windows vista ultimate 32bit, I'm trying to connect wiimote to my dell inspiron 1525 laptop, everything is good so far,(I'm connect it using Bluesoleil 6), but my problem is the Wii Play The Drums application stuck when it try to test my wiimote. I'll stick to circuit bending synths, thanks - wrnj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol, i actually wanted to mention minority report in my in initial comment. that would be great if it could be made reality.
- nextlevel233, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could someone who already downloaded all the things to make it work and tested it put the files somewhere like a rapidshare so we can do this? the site is down
- istrikelast, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4HAHAHAH I laughed out so loud when I clicked this post and the first idea that someone had was for lame interactive porn.
Nintendo tries so hard from making the image of gamers from "sad bunch of sex-less losers" to "real people that like things that fun" and that post just took us like 10 steps backwards.
I'm still laughing out loud about it, though. I'll Digg you up, man. - ShivaOritiner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'd play that one too! I love GH, I just don't love the controller. I play lefthanded, and the guitar flipping isn't as good as a real lefty guitar. But I'd be all over a DrumHero.
Can someone say extended drum solo???? -
