- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+70Can I ask how this guy even knows if it's even possible to make an auto-booting DVD for the Wii, let alone make it boot Linux with features, considering the fact that the Wii is not out, yet?
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -3/+62O Wiili? o_Ó
Ya, Wiili! o_o
*gets coat* - cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -9/+48Another great reason to get the wii
- xrisnothing, on 11/13/2007, -3/+41Shhhhh don't let them know our secret
- jonathantneal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29I'm so glad they went with Wiili, and not their concept name, DingaLing.
- fantastcandy10, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27"I'm going to refrain from sticking stuff in my Wii that shouldn't be stuck in there."
- Mullinator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I suppose you get what you pay for...
On the otherhand you could also just get Linux on a cheap PC. Besides, for the Wii it isn't so much about opening up Linux specific features as it is allowing homebrew on the Wii. Which would be AMAZING. - Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I have my doubts about how fun it will be using Linux on a PS3. I mean come on, they are just straight up trying to ***** every person who wants to program anything for the PSP right in the ass. How will it be any different for the PS3?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18How would you brick your console by trying to boot it from a disc?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Let's see. An unproven and probably unstable Linux kernel could do any of the following:
1. Accidentally flash the firmware.
2. Accidentally format the harddrive.
3. Deactivate the CPU/GPU fan.
4. Write to stuff that simply should not be written to.
5. Overclock the CPU/GPU.
6. Pump too much voltage to the DVD drive
7. Pump too much voltage to *anything*.
8. Send a secret launch code to a top secret nuclear silo and end up nuking chicago.
As we know jack fricking ***** about the specifics of the Wii firmware/hardware, any and all of that is possible, however unlikely. As I don't want to be responsible for World War 3, I'm going to refrain from sticking stuff in my Wii that shouldn't be stuck in there. - shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15The roadmap is interesting:
"November 19 buy a Wii.
November 19 - November 25 , play until fingers or eyes bleed (whichever is first to become un-treatable.)
November 26 - Test GC-Linux on the Wii "
Now if that isn't a comprehensive plan to get a proof of concept linux o/s originally ported to gamecube to work on the Wii, then I don't know what is! His attention to detail is hard to fathom. Kudos. BTW, there is not FAQ, no information besides "I'm going to try to get the gamecube linux to work on wii by putting the disc into the drive." If only things were that easy. - xerox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14im making my OSX live DVD for the xbox360, ill let you guys know when its done!
ps. article marked as inaccurate. - chronarion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13So, he doesn't have a Wii yet, just found out how much ram is in it, never developed for GameCube, and already he thinks that he can write a LiveCD to boot off it?
Possibly, just possibly, Nintendo won't trivially allow random unsigned binaries to run off unprotected CD-Rs. Like on every other DVD based console ever shipped. Just a thought.
This is pretty much material free fluff. - martinj88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14He's assuming the Wiis OS is based on the Gamecube
Theres a good chance it is......but it would have been modified alot and we won't know how much until we get one
I love the name tho - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I've had to link this site about a hundred times. Why do I have to do it again.
Yellow Dog Linux will function as a total Linux system, although Sony has made it boot up separately from the main interface. As seen on the early menu videos, there is an option to install an alternate OS on the PS3. About a week or two from launch, Yellow Dog Linux will be released for download for free for anyone who is willing to install it on their computer.
It'll include 2000+ packages, including
- Firefox
- Thunderbird
- Openoffice.org
- GIMP
- GAIM

Included Packages: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/included/ - MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13The PS3 only has 256MBs of RAM; So, if you are just gonna run Firefox on it, then you might as well save that $600 bucks and boot Ubuntu on the PC you're using now.
But if you are planning on coding up some crazy multi-threaded, non-memory intensive app for calculating Pi to the trillionth place, then I take it back. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Not likely. Besides, if it did what you say, it would kill the Wii before it got out of the gate.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@masamunecyrus
Thier first step is to try GC-Linux on the Wii. Since the hardware is similiar GC-Linux is already most of the way there. If they know how to write and reverse engineer hardware drivers then it should be pretty straightforward from there. If the rumors about the Wii using Linux as its OS are true, (did those ever get debunked/confirmed?) then that will provide something else to work with.
EDIT: They say a few things about a beta on the page. Maybe they've got a development system? - jromz03, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Wii-nux sounds catchy... Or not.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18why the ***** to people always say "backups" that is like the biggest BS word ever.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ok, so confirmed full Linux on the PS3 hasn't made it to the front page enough (i.e. at all) for people to stop claiming that it's not fully featured, but a random guy that hasn't even touched the system or tested his claims makes it to the front page due to the fact that the system is running on the Wii.
Something's wrong here. I'm excited about the Wii as much as the next guy, but this is ridiculous. - TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You mean a device that can take input, process it in a manner needed (from instructions), and give output can have some form of an OS? We just learned what a computer is! Thank you.
- hadiz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Yeah I'd rather wait for a few people to try this out and brick their consoles before I do. How does this guy even know it works? At this points it's highly unlikely he has one, and even if he does by no means would he be capable of doing any extensive research with a console so new. That'd be like someone coming out with a mod chip the day of the launch.
- HyperHacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Make sure it runs on my X360 emulator for the Game Boy. I don't want to have to lug an Xbox around to use it.
- thenewmadmax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@ masamunecyrus
as far as i knew, wii dev kits were rather cheap... - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7$200 bucks IS cheap. Of course, you could put Linux on the PC you upgraded from five years ago and is now taking up space in your closet because you figured you'd eventually get around to turning it into a linux box... for free.
- TrueVox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't recall the Dream Cast making profit on every console sold right out of the gate. Even if NOBODY ever buys a game, Nintendo *STILL* makes a good wad if people buy the console.
EDIT: Sorry, I realize the above may sound snarky. Not intended to be, I'm just tired. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh, so now it's cool to run Linux on a console. It's now cool to admit that a console is actually a computer. Give me a ***** break.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Mouse, it's been confirmed by the developer AND by Sony. You can look at all the features and packages included on this site. It's been in the back logs of Digg for a while, but apparently no one feels like digging it up.
Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 for PS3: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It might just be common knowledge or something, but there's one thing I don't understand... And forgive my ignorance on the subtleties of Wii/GC hacking.
Without a modchip the Wii (and supposedly the GameCube) can boot from a burnt CD-R or DVD-R? How is this done? I mean, I like the theory and all... But isn't it also common knowledge that a game console doesn't just "boot up" off of a burnt anything? Yeah, in-emulator on a computer, but I'm talking about the physical device. - Narpas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I suspect, with some poorly written code, parts of the firmware could be rewritten so that it's very difficult to change it back or modify it further. Although, I imagine this is a problem of malware rather than bonehead code.
- Ltgeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3his site is like a shrine to the wii
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The Wii's OS will have nothing to do with this. Booting off the LiveCD will replace the OS. All that they need to mess with are the firmware (to get it to run unsigned code) and they need to write drivers to take advantage of any non-standard hardware.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, only now that 'Wii' is in the title. That's how it goes... If the PS3 does it but the Wii doesn't, then it's lame. Oh the hypocrisy, Nintendo zealots.

"However, people need to realize that Linux will run on anything with a CPU and some memory... and I mean anything."
That is not true of all distros especially the newer ones. - thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thats what I love about Digg. It's a democracy and providing its fair the people will always get what they want.
- Microtosh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6what if the Wii could ***** on babies
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3running linux and RUNNING linux are two different things. The performance on the wii would be a joke.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And Australia. Apparently they will be calling this 'chinchin' in Japan as well.
- thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm guessing they'll try to load as much as possible off the optical media into the internal flash memory which is normally faster than a typical hard drive. It could work really nicely.
- DuffDemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have I missed a year? Is it 2007 already? My alarm clock must not have gone off again and Ive overslept.
- mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Seeing as nobody else mentioned it, I have to assume that willy = penis in Britain only?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to the site, they're pronouncing it Wee-Lee (like a wheelie on a motorcycle), not Will-E

"running linux and RUNNING linux are two different things. The performance on the wii would be a joke."
I run FreeBSD (which is similar enough to Linux to be relevant) on a 500MHz K6-2. It acts as a web/mail server in addition to having capabilities that you see on a home machine (I'm reading newsgroups via Kontact right now, for instance). Granted, it has a crapload of memory. Wii appears to have an anemic amount of memory, less than a hundred MegaBytes, google tells me. However, on my 266MHz Pentium MMX laptop, I could run KDE and a couple apps (with heavy swapping) on 48MB RAM. 96MB RAM allows KDE and a couple apps to run without swapping, as long as you're choosy about the apps. Linux is certainly doable on Wii. But I'm hoping that you can cache to SD (and not the internal flash). - motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well lets hope he can finish it up since it is his senior project.
- Artican, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3When I first heard of the Virtual Console, I was always wondering how the... er... "backup-happy" community would respond. I guess I'm not going to be disappointed after all.
My only concern is how said backed up games would run without having the controls specifically linked to buttons... but I'm sure that problem was addressed when Nintendo started working on the VC.
I'll certainly keep my eye on this for future developments. =D - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been trying to pimp Linux on the PS3 fora while as well. What's hilarious is that Wii owners will be shelling out $5-8 a pop for all NES/SNES games ans PS3 owners will just load up some emulators and download the ROMs for free, instantly giveing them access (albeit illegal) to 1000's of games.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yah I think Wiinux would have been a better name. It's not too late to change...
