- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -11/+72It was a fun 3 days to a week making all the Wii jokes. Then E3 arrived and everyone was too busy being amazed and trying to play the thing to care about whether the name was silly at first or not.
- somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20that doesnt mean people dont still hate the name.
- schwal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16the stages of wii
1. revolution announced. "small box."
2. games from old systems announced. "okay that's kinda shiny."
3. controller announced. "what a gimmic."
4. named Wii. "lol wii is stupid."
5. E3 06. "holy crap i must have one." - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20They could have called it the Nintendo Wang and I'd still get it. For that price, there's no way I'll be missing out.
The name was amusing at first, but they kept shrouding us with mystery, and only once in a while did they even throw us a bone. They must have changed marketing teams.
To be honest, it wasn't E3 that made the difference. It was the Internet. Even before E3, everyone was psyched about the Wii. Look back at comments on Digg since the Wii controller was announced. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11" My mom doesn't even know what to call it (in regards to the PS2)."
If she can't put two and two together and work out that Playstation 3 will shorten to PS3 your mum is pretty dumb.... - thegreyfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9nope.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo - endyminion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11eqisow:
There actually isn't any English rule that says he can't say "stupider". Convention simply says that it is more common to say "more ________" if there are more than one or two syllables. Two or less: "_____er"
Some words seem to also simply follow a pattern that society has adopted for whatever reason. But there is no wrong or right in this case... just what's commonly heard.
"Stupider" is fine. "More Stupider" is not. "More Stupid" is probably preferred just because it's easier on the English speaking tongue. Try typing stupider into a program like word... spellcheck will gloss right over it because.... gasp it's OK.
The more you know! *cue star*
//end rant
But yeh, I always thought the Wii jokes were pretty juvenile. I thought the name was pretty dumb, but it's definitely grown on me a lot. Now when I hear the name, I think of the sound a little kid makes while they are on the swing in a park. "We!" Because that's exactly how I expect I'm going to feel when I get my hands on the console. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13The proof is in the pudding? Where? Is it at the bottom with the fruit?
"The proof of the pudding is in the eating." - worbd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Are you out of your mind? I am that generation, and I'm excited about gaming for the first time in years!
Useless gimmick? For kids?
I think it looks like a great way to control games, and those who have actually tried it agree. As an adult, I'm also looking forward to Mario Galaxy and all the other cool games that will be released.
You call the console "inferior", but how is it inferior? Are you so shallow that you think all that can be improved is graphics?
You are right, this console probably isn't for you. It probably isn't for people who stick with their initial knee-jerk reaction rather than getting informed about what the new controller is all about (and thereby getting excited).
You don't sound like you should be playing PC or videogames at all. - jhuynh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I can't believe i just read that someone is never going to buy any Nintendo product ever again just because of the name of their next gen console... Man there are a lot of insecure people on digg.
- endyminion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6And you're saying that any other console gaming platform is anything more than just a toy?
I don't think so... - Nation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yeah, it's still a stupid name ... it's just the buzz because it is a stupid name has passed.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The name "Wii" just looks cool in writing.
- Hydroxyl, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12I think they had this name in mind so people actually would make fun of it, that way the name stuck in your head.
PlayStation 3... Means the there were three before it and it's an easily forgetabble name. My mom doesn't even know what to call it (in regards to the PS2).
But if I got a Wii, I'm pretty sure she would remember. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I love how David Yarnton has tried to be in the spotlight this week, he loves to pretend that Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Japan talk to him.
Haha the way Nintendo has treated GameCube owners is appauling, they are doing a superb job with the DS but they've abandoned the GameCube completely.
Only new games you can find now is Spongebob, World Cup and Xmen 3. - md81544, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8For those of us in the UK (especially the North) a better pronounciation (but not officially sanctioned) is "why aye".
I'm still getting one, no matter what it's called. - Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Yeah, the Nintendo Pile-of-***** wouldn't sell to many units. (I'm not saying the Wii is a pile of *****, I am really exited about it)
- Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There are a lot of insecure people on the Internet, but thankfully the firewalls protect their sense of self worth.
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7"went to a lan cafe last night and wii jokes were being thrown around like crazy"
"little brother came home from school and told me some nintendo wii related jokes his friends had said"
"xbox live today people were making jokes about it"
Man, I bet those jokes were really funny, too. I bet they were really new and creative. People on XBox live? XBox Live people are known for their witty repartees... - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4for those in the north east they should make a tamagotchi style game called wii pet.
/apologies to any non-UK readers. - worbd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Perhaps you are very young, since you don't remember the fact that Nintendo completely dominated the market a few years ago.
Children such as yourself also seem to have a problem with Nintendo not focusing too much on violence, blood and gore. That's fine, and I understand that someone at, say, 13 years old, wants to pretend to be mature, and therefore is attracted to violent games rather than Nintendo's plain fun games (whether they are cute or not).
As for the GameCube sucking, it was the most powerful system of the previous generation, wasn't it?
Anyway, the Wii has gotten a fair bit of mainstream press coverage, and apart from young lads such as yourself, I don't think cracking jokes about the name is the first thing most people think about.
And even your fellow youngters, while they may start to joke about the name, will probably be curious about this new system, and will check it out - if only for the novelty of the name. And they will be caught in the net, and will get themselves a Wii. The laughing at the name will be replaced with joyous laughter of pleasure as they start playing the available games.
You, too, will check out the Wii, if only because you are intrigued by the name. You certainly are intrigued enough to post about it here, and my guess is that within six months of the Wii launch, you'll have secured your own copy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Meh.. I hated it first but now i think its a good name, it grows on you.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8No one ever said they didn't liike the system, everyone I know still hates the name. Forget the childish jokes, it's just a dumb name. It's what happens when 45 year old Japanese men meet in a board room and try to come up with something "young" and "fresh".
- TubaFrog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Nintendo's "genius" has banked them billions. How about yours?
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10drw2583,
The word you're looking for is dumber. 'More stupid' would also work. Either way, 'stupider' is not a word. If you're going to call something stupid, don't make yourself sound retarded while doing it. - Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did the article just state that Nintendo has been around for 100 years? In what capacity?
- fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -19/+20I hate to say I told you so, but ehm..
I told you so. - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@superfito
Sorry pal, but Nintendo has a near stranglehold on genuinely fun games. Super Mario Bros. and Zelda. Guess what... more than 15 years later, they're still fun. You know what hooked me on the Wii (not the name, I tell you that). Duck Hunt 2.
Here is the proof that fun games are better than violent games. Duke Nukem is a violent game that has (allegedly) been in development for nearly a decade. It's a punchline, not a marketable game.
Duck Hunt came out almost 20 years ago. And the sequel will sell like Halo 3 hotcakes.
Don't get me wrong, the N botched a lot of franchises with the Lamecube. But damn... it nailed Zelda. And because of that, the Wii is getting serious consideration. - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I think the real test begins when you start trying to talk to other people about it."
So true. I've gotten over the name for myself, but I still can't use it around some of my non-gamer friends who only hear it used occasionally and still think it's funny. - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Sorry to say that I agree. The Wii bashing has yet to begin. Just wait till release date, when the general public gets exposed to "Wii".
Hell, I bet there will even be email forwards full of Wii jokes. (shudder) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has nothing to do with that.... it's just that now that the PS3 is out, no one has time to bash the wii.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it's too bad xbox and playstation-bashing isn't gone. then again, i guess it never will be with all those nintendo fanboys out there... *rolls eyes*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Its still a bloody stupid name!!
- Hyperion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'm guessing you've never heard of marketing.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4It got old, just like all childish jokes. Long live the Wii!
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You sound stupid even saying something like that.
"Long live the Wii!"
Just listen to yourself, man! - bobeotm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I couldnt disagree more. The name STILL sucks, in spite of how greatly the games for it will shine, people arent going to really just stop disliking the name choice. I may buy a Wii, and like the Wii, but in 3 years I will probably still think the name is pretty stupid. Especially given the fact that a big part of the name choice is its pun potential. Just look at the mission statment when the name was first announced.
- Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You skepticism of others reactions are unfounded, because you are basing it on your own experiences. All you did was make broad blanket statements about the general public and Nintendo. I don't see how it could not be construed as negative.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I definitely want to get one someday but I don't think I'll ever like the name. Wii is what happens when you get corporate suits with a bunch of "yes" men in a conference room trying to get creative. The console is cool as hell but Wii is just stupid.
- endyminion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2...if I had a dollar for everyone who thought they were being funny by saying wii_____...
- funnydale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I could care less what Nintendo names their console. My problem with Nintendo is that they are actually thinking about charging $250 dollars for what is basically a slightly overclocked Game Cube with a $15 dollar controller that only seems to work well with the "simple" Nintendo Wii games like Tennis, or Wii Baseball.
From what I have been hearing from people that have actually played the Wii, that controller in practice, is a pain to work with games like Zelda, and Metroid.
The virtual console doesnt interest me, because I own all the classic games I want for the NES, Genesis, Turbografx etc...
I have no problems with Nintendo as a company, hell, I plan on buying the DS light next month. What I have a problem with is that if the Wii games are going to look like the Game-Cube, there is no justification for pricing that console for only $50 dollars less than the XBOX 360 core. If they really are going to charge $250 dollars, they are just asking Microsoft to cut the price of the 360 core system to $250, or even $229.
My only real problem with the Wii is that it should be no more than $199, or even $150, anything more, and Nintendo would just be greedy. - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I still don't like the name, don't think I'll ever TRULY take it seriously. It looks good on paper, but when you say it out loud it just sounds kind of cheesy.
Either way, I'll always be someone who enjoys shrieking "Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!" - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dream on, Nintendo fanboys. We still think the name sucks.
- endyminion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Nights:
Yeh, my bad. I wasn't paying attention to the title. *Twilight Princess* is coming out for the wii and for the gamecube this fall. There. - Pokelicious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hydroxyl,
I think you're right, no publicity is bad publicity and all that. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2
They could have called it the Nintendo Wang and I'd still get it.
Exactly. And I still think the name sucks.
That, and everyone else who agrees disproves the claims of this article.
WE STILL THINK THE NAME SUCKS! - nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Windwaker is coming out for the gamecube and the wii at launch this fall."
Umm....no it's not, it's already out. - Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Hyperion: Yeah it's like you said, marketing. This name was given for marketing purposes and as you see in THIS case it was good marketing for them. Why? Because Wii is a good product and by giving out this particular name a little before E3 made a lot more people to see what this Puu ... ehm Wii is for and as soon as it was good they became potential buyers, really simple.
On the other hand if the console was a complete ***** and the name was the best damn name for a console, many people -again- would go to see it but they would be dissapointed, because actual product matters. BTW Wii isn't a bad name for japanese folk and don't forget that they are one of the biggest target groups. - antisthenex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I pretty much said I had to get one the second the announced the backwards compatability. Once I saw the promo video for the controller, I was hooked and most people I know were.
- TheIguana, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I still think it is a stupid name, something I just cannot believe would come from Nintendo's "genius."
