- ursername180, on 10/10/2007, -3/+139Wooo... play with anyone. I was hoping for this feature, because if you're like me you don't have friends. :(
- Insert31990, on 10/10/2007, -0/+116I'm actually stoked that records won't be kept with Non-Friend Matches. Less motivation to disconnect, less exploiters, and a more laid-back and overall fun experience.
Let's just hope they have the 'Rivals' feature from Metroid Prime: Hunters.
I thank you kindly, Mr. Sakurai, for creating possibly the most epic game to have ever graced the gaming industry.
See you online this December! - nymphetamine, on 10/10/2007, -3/+67"There will also be no battle records kept for this mode, so whether you win or lose, it doesn’t matter. Just sit back and play."
But, but...how will I ever know how awesome I am? - ursername180, on 10/10/2007, -2/+66Trust me. There would've been thousands of Japanese people pushing your name down the list if there was one.
- MrPapaMan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+62This just in! "Super Smash Bros Brawl presales increased today by 10000%"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+55Awesome. The replay value of Melee was already great, but this makes it just 100 times better. Can't wait to try this out.
- mewhunter67, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40this is THE news i've been waiting for on brawl... i havent even read the article yet, i'm just so happy brawl is online confirmed. I'm happy now, all is right in the world.
too bad this got posted right before i tried to. heh. - likedonduan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34"Now, while you’re waiting for a match to start, you can kill time with a little practice on Sandbag."
Did you guys read that, that's another awesome feature (kinda). But hey, SSBB is ONLINE! Wihiy. - Dodobutt222, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32So we don't have to ***** ourselves waiting for the game as long.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27if you were in the dorms, you could have opened your door and shouted "who wants to play some smash bros?" and instantly had 3 more players.
- walugi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28Anyone that plays DS over wifi, or has played SSB/M will be ***** their pants right now. The number of crazy asian players that have crazy skills are insane. Go watch some youtube videos of the pros, they take it onto a whole other level.
- Paroparo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27***** yes!!!
I just hope they include the option to play in slow-mo to mitigate the lag just a bit, and allow 2 players to play on one console against 2 players on another. Connecting between just two consoles should make the game run faster, right? - Bartboy919, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26FINALY, I was starting to think they were going to can the claim of internet play they made at E3 back when SSBB was made. One question, why wait 3 months before shipping your game to tell us about Wi-Fi Play?
- gfindlay, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25The only thing that worries me is the lag. The fact that Masahiro Sakurai has to give us the caveat: "The more distant you are, the worse your connection becomes, and the slower it feels. I apologize, but I hope you understand," doesn't sound very good. Since in the "With anyone" option, you won't know people's names or information, does that mean to avoid lag, Nintendo will automatically set us up with people close to us? Hmm. Interesting...
- Cint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21100th dojo update was today, built up suspense and hype over the game.
- Bossman1086, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Pretty awesome...though, I wish they implemented voice chat...if only before and after matches.
- Jappio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Neat update, and appropriate the 100th update.
- xerus, on 10/10/2007, -9/+27No, those are "Tourney fags" who turn off all the items and play final destination every day.
- Dhalgren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18"not sure how well a fast fighting game will play over 802.11g.......b"
You do realize that the internet connection speed is the bottleneck for most home users, not the wireless speed, right? - AhrenBa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Wow, I am happy for a wi-fi play with Smash Bros. but I am still absolutely amazed that Nintendo still uses separate friend codes for every game. I don't understand the logic for this. Oh, and maybe some voice chat....maybe??
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20At least its better than "Please wait while players are located"
*1 minute later* Player #2 and #3 found
*3 minutes later* Player #3 dropped
*5 minutes later* match started
*10 seconds later* Player #2 has quit. - Kaosu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18. . . . DOJO is the name of the site. BRAWL is the name of the game . . . EVERYWHERE.
- NinjaPig, on 10/10/2007, -10/+25TAKE THAT HALO 3!
- MouseCircus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Read the article. He says they're planning various features that use wifi. Maybe tournaments and the like are part of those plans.
Just because it wasn't announced/revealed doesn't mean it doesn't exist. - jizzxcore, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16The e-dick has effectively been severed.
- Antyrael, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Maybe I'm missing something, but what leads you to believe this?
- Durinthal, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Reasons to have voice chat in Super Smash Bros.:
1. Trash talk.
2. 12 year olds that want to talk about how great their Pokémon team is.
No thanks. - Dodobutt222, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Finally! Yes! Best update EVAR!
I can't wait for this game! - freetyme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I'm not expecting voice chat (sorry but it probabl won't happen), but I really hope they have tournaments and rank the matches for those. Having non-ranked matches for just one-on-one play would just make people drop off and do stupid crap.
His mentioning of the lag is worrisome, but hopefully the random smash option will connect you with someone close by. Even if it doesn't work fantastic at first, I know I'll have friends waiting to come over to play anyway. Besides, hopefully Nintendo's servers will improve over time.
A great first step Nintendo, now keep marching forward and don't get a big head. - knightofeffect, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Smash would require faaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrr less lag than a fps to be competetative.
- r0ryb0ryalis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10But you get to knock around the sandbag =]
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I think we'll be fine. Most players are able to get the pings they need to BOOM HEADSHOT others so smash will def. be fine.
- gfindlay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9But we also already know of Snake's inclusion. Perhaps they'll tell us more hidden characters before the launch too. I think I'd rather be surprised when I'm unlocking them myself though...
- jizzimmy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10This is great for anyone in college. I can't remember how many times I'd play Melee between classes and be bummed I had to play against CPU characters.
- canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10considering the japanese have difficulty with b,r,w, and l, "x" makes sense. otherwise it would be "supah smashu bruddaz vlau!!!!!!!!"
- Klarth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9...Except in Japan, where it's Super Smash Bros X.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Honestly I hardily even care that this game is online. The friend code system just ruins it. I bareily feel like entering all my friend's friendcodes. Not to mention it makes it nearly impossible to meet new people online. It takes all the social out of online gaming. I'd rather play on xbox live and save super smash brothers when I have people over (which is rare)
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I have only one thing to say to this:
Let there be voice!
http://wii.ign.com/articles/819/819583p1.html - freetyme, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12yeah that means they're not gamers.
(joking PS3 owners) - Sparkio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Wait wait, my friend... read the last (and perhaps most important) line of the post again - "We’re planning a number of services that make use of Wi-Fi, but we’ll reveal them gradually with the other modes. Enjoy." Tournament mode, perhaps? There's no reason they couldn't have a voluntary leaderboard update.
- MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Aye... As much as I hated the community showers, the dirty bathrooms, the anoying noises... I miss the people randomly coming by because you are in the "cell" next to them...
- Durinthal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8That's probably why they shut down their forums; they would've exploded after this announcement.
- honeymustardn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8How??? It's pretty much the same game, just with a ton of added stuff.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Maybe this game will change their mind. Almost nobody I know had a Gamecube, but they still loved Smash Bros Melee.
- jasonpoon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Great to have Wi-Fi play (actually everyone knows there will be Wi-Fi play...)
but Nintendo please...please change the stupid Friend Code system... - bilbravo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7implementation > ideas/concepts
I think this is why Nintendo is late to the game, as they usually like to have a good implementation. They're not perfect (no voice, friends codes) but the online games I've played (Tetris, Mario Kart DS, Mario Strikers Charged) never have issues with lag. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Oh, how I miss the dorms. College was great until I moved off-campus. And then there was graduation, at which point NOBODY had any time to hang out anymore.
- TotallyAtRandom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6With no voice over Wi-Fi, there will be no real trash talking. With no trash talking, you remove 60% of the fun of sitting around kicking the crap out of your friends. At least let friends talk to each other. Or implement leagues or levels for people to join, similar to Xbox LIVE has the Pro gamers and Casual gamers somewhat separated. With all the amazing programming Nintendo has going on, I'm sure they are smart enough to dream up a great online system. I'm tired of them proving me wrong by reverting back to the friend-code system every time.
- Natetendo83, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I didn't even think about the disconnects and all of that stuff when online records wouldn't be tracked but that completely makes sense
- SagaLhan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The game looks very promising, and this news was exactly what I wanted to hear. Irony is that I've been hugging the smashbros.com RSS feed for months now and this newspost slipped past my attention. =(
