- KaivenTor, on 06/18/2008, -4/+37PC gaming isn't in a decline, the standards of the games just went up. Besides, does anyone here really think an entire industry would cave over a stripped down graphics computer and some shiny plastic? Make better games and cheaper hardware and the growth rate of PC gaming will continue to go up.
- ddotccDPU, on 06/18/2008, -3/+28I believe that the majority of people who say PC gaming is on a decline say it because there have been so few widely spread games these days. Almost everyone today knows of Starcraft and Diablo, because they were EVERYWHERE when they first came out. Now people are turned off by the expensive rigs needed to run most games and the lack of quality in games.
Another opinion on this would be the multi-platform releases. Why, when you have an Xbox or a PS3 would you buy a game that already was released on console for the PC? When game consoles were out back in the mid '90's no one had internet access to play against a friend. Computers were the only system that allowed this. The next gen consoles have allowed gamers to integrate everything into their console. - mrelusive, on 06/18/2008, -0/+23Consoles must construct additional Pylons.
- Harabeck, on 06/18/2008, -1/+22Constant? More like every 4 years or so. About the liftime of a console.
- itspuddingtime, on 06/18/2008, -0/+22the moral of the story would be "back up your data." I don't see how this is Steam's fault at all.
- Kingal, on 06/18/2008, -1/+20I've heard PC gaming is going to die for 10+ years now. Especially with the release of every new console. I'm sure with the next console release, we'll hear the same thing.
- FLYBOY611, on 06/18/2008, -1/+17From what I've read in other articles PC Gaming is still hot stuff in the European countries. Hopefully a combination of Nvidia's shift to mass market appeal and games like Spore will put the sexy back into PC Gaming.
I miss the days when great games like Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast came out for PC - renegadeafk, on 06/18/2008, -1/+17I upgrade like every 4 years, My old pc using a 7600gs could still play most games like cod4 fine. Console fanboys make it out like you have to upgrade your video card every month.
- 1gunners4, on 06/18/2008, -0/+16It's time to start?? My friend, that shipped sailed when WoW was launched.

- FKnight, on 06/18/2008, -6/+19FTA:
"MMOs are definitely well suited to the PC," said Bryan Dezayas, associate director of product marketing for Alienware, a unit of Dell Inc. that makes high-end computers for avid gamers. The games have many complex commands that would be difficult to operate with a console game controller, but are easy with a desktop computer's keyboard and mouse."
I can buy a keyboard for my Playstation 3 RIGHT NOW. Consoles /shipping/ with only a 4 button controller is not a barrier for MMOs on consoles. The problem simply doesn't exist. There is absolutely zero reason a keyboard cannot be plugged into a console.
FTA:
"In addition, MMOs often store many gigabytes of data on a computer's hard drive. "That's something that's not possible on a console today," Dezayas said, because console hard drives are generally not large enough to handle that much data. "
.. and console games don't store many gigabytes of data on a console's hard drive? That's news to me. Granted, World of Warcraft would have to be rewritten for the new architecture, but as it is right now, a PS3 hard drive could store about 10 copies of World of Warcraft.
These "hurdles" to MMOs on consoles aren't just artificial, they're made up and pulled out of someone's ass. - FLYBOY611, on 06/18/2008, -3/+15This year at College I had THREE friends buy copies of the Orange box off Steam after they saw me playing Team Fortress and Portal. ALL THREE where crushed when they found out that their brand new laptops couldn't even start the games because of lack of decent integrated graphics or in one case a graphics chip that was designed for modeling and 3D design not games.
The issue is the mainstream shift towards laptops and the industry not putting proper integrated graphics into laptops due to battery life (but I really don't blame them for this). Until there is a way to raise this bar PC won't be able to advance. - sleepwalkers, on 06/18/2008, -0/+11I completely understand how much that sucks, but... it *is* your fault that you forgot your Steam password. I'm sure there's some way to update a contact e-mail address and you even had a physical way to get access to your content. Nothing that happened is Steam/Valve's fault, and from my perspective, you locked yourself out of your own content.
- renegadeafk, on 06/18/2008, -0/+11That's the fault of the developers of bioshock, not valve
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -1/+12Well tell that to Lucas Arts, they aren't releasing The Force Unleashed for the PC but every console gets their version. Crap.

- prleet, on 06/18/2008, -2/+11Why PC gaming rocks.
The day Ut2004 came out, I was a flat broke college student with last 50 bucks in my account and without any job. So I said, F*** it and went to best buy to get it. I played that game for 4+ years straight. Since the release of PS3, I have bought Resistance, COD4, Ratchet, MGS4, GTA4, Blazing Angles, Elder Scroll 4, Warhawk and UT3 but here is the problem, none of these games can match the game play on a pc. PC GAMING will always be the ultimate experience. - shakin, on 06/18/2008, -0/+10Your experience may become a larger problem in the future. If Steam is the gatekeeper for all the games you bought then it needs to have a mechanism to ensure you will always be able to access your games.
If Steam has a good privacy policy I wouldn't mind entering my home address and phone number so they can phone me at my request if I cannot login. - Jethris, on 06/18/2008, -0/+9Maybe, but we're highly paid nerds.
- wedges, on 06/18/2008, -0/+9no, it doesn't have the ability to lock you out of what you paid for. only you have that ability. i've been career focused for a couple of years now, so i'm not doing so much pc gaming these days. every now and then i'll play though, and lo and behold, my steam account still has everything i paid for.

You guys are COLLEGE STUDENTS. If you couldn't figure out, at that level, the FOUR of you, that you cannot play current gen 3d games without a decent graphics card, then I fear for your term results. - Variz, on 06/18/2008, -6/+14There have always been peaks and valleys in the console vs PC gaming wars.
I've always been a defender when PC was in a rut that it would bounce back. My views recently have changed.
There are a number of things that stack up against PC gaming right now:
1) Piracy (torrents) provides an easy way to download PC games. The case could be made for console games but the impact is minimal due to the small number of users that hack their console to allow this. For investors this is scary.
2) Consoles have mass market appeal now. It's now "cool" to own an XBox360. The mass market appeal grew more with college buddies playing online with the new generation of consoles. It's still not cool to say, "Dude, my PC is totally pimped out!". Not the same effect at all...
3) End user cost. $500 for a console that will be good for 7 years to come or $2500 for a high end gaming rig that will need parts replaced within two years.
4) Development cost. The amount of configurations available for PC hardware is astounding. With consoles you have one platform and configuration to support.
5) Gameplay experience. Again with the single configuration on consoles it allows the developers to provide a consistent gaming experience for all their end users. PCs everyone can get everything from a great experience to an unplayable one depending on the computer.
Right now what is holding PCs up is the MMO market. Practically any decently selling game on the PC no is an MMO. Once this genre of game begins to latch hold into the console market it's hard for me to see PCs bouncing back.
The world is changing. For the better I'd probably argue now. I'll always remember those classic PC days though. - Recluse, on 06/18/2008, -1/+9You don't actually have to do that. You can put steam in offline mode and play your games that way, you just won't get any of the achievements for certain games.

Consoles = Owned;
fixed. (although i completely disagree.) - inactive, on 06/18/2008, -1/+9I'm not a hardcore PC gamer.. but it's actually not that expensive and there are a lot of great games for PCs each year.
a) What's so bad about running Windows? You can have a Mac and use bootcamp, or if you have linux you can dual-boot. Not that difficult.
b) You can build a good gaming machine for under $1000.. perhaps even less. And even then, you can still use the machine for normal PC needs, like word processing, emails, etc.
c) There are tons of great games each year, and even better is that there are mods for those games which make them even more enjoyable. One instance of this being true is Oblivion.. its a great game without mods, but even greater with them.
d) It isn't a waste of hard drive space, you can always uninstall them if you don't want them. Hard drives are becoming less and less expensive.. so using 4 - 8 gbs on your hard drive is nothing when you have 500gb of space. - str3ama, on 06/18/2008, -0/+7Because with PC gaming they can keep releasing games, whereas with consoles as new consoles are announced - you start to see the number of games being released for it suddenly slow down and increasingly dip down. Also with PC gaming, you can mod the game - which is another reason why it continues to thrive - I mean there are tons of people who buy GTA for their console of choice and then buy it again for pc - just so that they can play the mods.
PC Gaming will never die because as great as consoles are getting, they can't match the open platform - I mean a serious way for consoles to compete would be to allow home brews - to readily accept it. - LMN8R, on 06/18/2008, -0/+7You're looking at it all wrong. You can get away with spending money on upgrading your PC as infrequently as buying consoles but the point is that *IF* you want to spend more for a better experience, you can!
With a console, if a game is gimped at 600p or whatever CoD 4 is running at, you have to deal with it. If you have frame rate problems or ridiculous load times in Mass Effect, sucks to be you. If you're running at 30fps, but would really prefer 60fps, you're ***** out of luck. But had you been playing any of those games on PC, and have a little extra cash sitting around that you're willing to spend, viola - problem solved.
That said, ever since the 8800GT came out so cheap last year, getting a graphics card that can utterly destroy the graphical capabilities of the consoles for under $200 has been easy. An 8800GT can run Call of Duty 4 at 60+ fps, 1680x1050 resolution, and even throw a little AA in there. - commieboy, on 06/18/2008, -0/+7Versus what, the oh-so-garage-friendly PS3?
- sleepwalkers, on 06/18/2008, -0/+7Hahahaha.
Starcraft 64. - FXPooky, on 06/18/2008, -2/+8I used to be a very involved PC gamer who upgraded his graphics card every 6-12 months. Now I own a console.
The reason is SOFTWARE. Consoles get all the good games (exceptions being Starcraft and Spore) like Gears of War, Dead Rising, Mass Effect, GTA, Rock Band, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Force Unleashed, etc. either early or exclusively. On PC you have a good shooter every now and then, and a hit every year or two, these days, and it costs you a 250$ GPU upgrade every year to play.
Not worth it. I'd much rather spend 300$ up front and be done with it, and play more and better games with the possibility of throwing in an extra controller to play with a friend, as well as media streaming from my computer to my HD display, and all the online features like achievements and such, and Rock Band. - ddotccDPU, on 06/18/2008, -1/+7Oh wait, by your idiocy of not reading, you didn't realize I said that the only online play available was through computer. I had PlayStation and I played it to death, I also was on my computer. I didn't say people didn't play consoles, come on now.
- the6thReplicant, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6Wow not many people want to mention the elephant in the room: piracy. If Crytek wants to abandon the PC platform because they think there are losing too much money from it, then people better notice. Either, us gamers, do it ourselves and try and limit piracy, or someone/thing will. And by the looks of it, a lot of people leaving the PC market to go into the console one (at least they're not going bankrupt)
- latova, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6Their excuse in some interview was that they didn't want their PC fans getting a watered down experience since apparently their game apparently requires a $4000 rig, yet on the other hand they're going to release it on the Nintendo DS, which I can assume they are doing because the Nintendo DS obviously equates to a $4000 rig. So instead of letting PC gamers experience what might of been a PC classic like Jedi Knight, they're apparently going to do us all a favor by not giving us a chance to buy the game.
Really, its like companies such as LucasArts, Epic, and so on don't even want our money anymore. Valve and Blizzard must be loving all these absolutely stupid developers. - sebby2022, on 06/18/2008, -3/+9So? I don't see a problem with that?
- ender7074, on 06/18/2008, -2/+8Dont buy a 400 dollar laptop. Expecting a game to run on integrated graphics is not the fault of the computer, its the fault of the person who bought it. If a computer is only to be a tool, then its fine. Playing games requires a bit more research to make sure that you're buying a laptop capable of gaming on.
- Scrappy1850, on 06/18/2008, -1/+7you can use keyboard and mouse for consoles. you can use controllers on PC. that argument is old. the main difference between the two now is performance and game choices.
- itspuddingtime, on 06/18/2008, -2/+8real gamers use full towers. Most laptops are just toys for email/web browsing
