Huh?
Were you confusing "inexpensive" with "cheap"? I'd call the Wii inexpensive, but not on the same level of a Happy Meal and a fine restaurant. - alevel27mage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41Because yelling "OBJECTION!" into the microphone of the DS at the top of your lungs is one of the most satisfying experiences a man can have.

You're a *****' idiot.
Appealing to the lowest common denominator? Since when we're children males and females of all walks of life lower than greasy PS fanboys?
"...Nintendo's motto is sell the least amount at the highest price, where MS/Sony sell the most they can for the lowest price. "
So Sony sell a PS3 in AU for $1,000 no backwards compatability (will require software updates and will be quickly forgotten like 360 backwards compatability), $100+ titles and no HDMI cables in the box to enjoy your friggin' HD experience.
Nintendo sell you everything you need to play your Wii the day/night you pick it up for $400 including a game, a really damn fun game.
Or the DS vs PSP
$169 for DS + Brain Training (or the game of your choice at a lot of retailers) so you can pick up and play
or
$399 for the PSP on it's lonesome, a big useless brick until you mod it.
gg wanker. - caddyalan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32The DS software lineup is interesting. It includes the following:
1. Lots of average-to-bad licensed games... much like the ones often seen on the Gameboy Advance.
2. Several remarkable mainstream games which don't currently exist on any other system.
3. A number of experimental and even "artsy" games, which range from failures to cult hits.
Lots of people buy licensed games, even the ones which are shallow or instantly forgettable. But I think the system would still be struggling if it weren't for games which attract wide-ranging audiences (New Mario, Nintendogs). Games like these are appropriate for a portable system.
What I find most intriguing: some of the offbeat games are actually succeeding. Maybe it's because the DS system seems geared toward innovation. (Stylus use might be similar to using a mouse, but it's unique in console gaming.) Still, it seems kind of amazing considering the sorts of unusual games which are succeeding. There's not one but two graphic adventure games about lawyers currently in English... and this is unprecedented.
I say this because on a mainstream console like the Playstation, there was enough room for publishers to try a few offbeat games in English. But only a few of the PS1's unique games were successful. Examples: the Parappa and Lammy series was once a hit but has since faded away, the sequels to Rhapsody were never translated, Incredible Crisis was a flash-in-the-pan, and there are very few mainstream relationship games like Thousand Arms in English. In other words, the PS1 also had creative games, but I don't think many of them were as successful as some of today's creative games on the DS. - rcran, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Can I come over to your house sometime and see it?
- yujie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Because it prints money!
- epistemological, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24The reason the DS is successful is the same reason as the Wii, they are both fun and something new. I don't know about the rest of you but I have been playing video games since I was a little child, but after university and working full time I just dont have the time for games that take 8 billion hrs. I have both systems and love the fact I can play a game and have fun in a short amount of time.
- Billiam627, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I think a lot of the DS' success comes from the fact that girls love it. I mean, I know so many girls who normally hate video games in general, but love their DS.
- aebo06, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27I myself own a Nintendo DS.
- VMark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Tetris with Wifi.
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19b/c compared to the psp, its cheap as hell, has more games
- drewlynde, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22HAHA i logged in just to bury tahiri
what a tard - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17The DS is the perfect portable. It has games you can play in 10 minute bursts if you want. Playing a PSP game can be a chore...what Sony hasn't realized is that people don't want the same experiences on a portable as they have on a console.
I lost my PSP and I don't miss it at all. I just hope I never lose my DS. - Nydas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I wish i knew these girls, then we could cut a rug in "Elite Beat Agents" together. :(
- Jeremy82465, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"I don't get why Digg loves Nintendo, Nintendo's motto is sell the least amount at the highest price, where MS/Sony sell the most they can for the lowest price."
So many flaws in this sentence. First its not just Digg that loves Nintendo, its the entire world, as shown in sales figures. Second am I the only one who sees the flaw in the second part of this statement? Nintendo sells the most entertainment for the lowest price and MS/Sony (more sony on this one) sells the least entertainment for the highest price they can possibly push on the market. Granted they are still taking a loss its only because they knew no one in their right ***** mind would buy it at a higher price, hell even now they sit on store shelves. Third, have you even played a DS? It is instantly addicting. I just bought one and havent put it down for a week now. I have had a PSP for about 8 months and havent touched it in 7. - oscarwp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Advance Wars alone is worth the price of the system.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16better yet, i'll bring my DS over to your house and we can stare at them both....
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15And the fact that you dont have to hack it to get any real use out of it.
- syl1985, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Me and my missus have DS' she bought us 1 each as an anniversary present and I love it. We played EBA a lot - 'cept I have got too good for her... she's too busy playing Castlevania and good ole Sims 2.
Also met a couple of ladies on the tram who play DS' so that make the morning trips more fun playing Mario Kart etc. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I can play my ds on the train, when i get into the train station i can just close it, no running around to find a save point, i dont even have to use something as "archaic" as pause (which some games dont even support) , then i throw it in my drawer until its time to leave. Then I hop on the train and open the ds and the game is right where i left it, no "loading or resuming screens" and the battery is still good for hours of play.
This is why I love my ds. - rcran, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Or, if you want, we can go to the library and play with the photocopier...
- shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@tahiri
Your analogy sucks ass, mate. McDonald's is cheap and tastes like *****. The DS is cheap and is amazing. It doesn't have the graphical capabilities that the PSP does, but what difference does that make when the DS has all the best games? The innovation and fun-factor in so many of the DS games are really what makes it such a kickass system. Plus the fact that they've remade all the Final Fantasy games from 1-4 for the DS, and I'm sold. You just can't match the innovation found in games like Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, Hotel Dusk, etc. - APHughes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11turns out people enjoy to have fun
- GenoBaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I agree... but for some reason when I yell "Hold It" I can't seem to get that to work... still... FUN!!!! ... and that's the main point... to have fun.
- Nydas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You obviously havent played Hotel Dusk.
- DeathBorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why is the DS dominant? It's simple, there is nothing that matches its bang for the buck. The PSP might have good graphics, but it has nowhere near the amount and quality of games that the DS has, and is more expensive. Many people can't do many of the PSP's advanced features (face it, little kids and grannies probably don't emulate) so they buy the DS instead. Plus, the touch screen makes for a much more immersive and conventient gameplay experience. You can lose a DS and afford another one; when you lose a PSP you're broke.
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Unlike the PSP, the DS is better geared as a on-the-go kind of system. It's a bit hard to say, start up a game of GTA, play for a few minutes after waiting for the loading screens, then turn it off again. Just not practical. The DS has a lot more games that can do just that. Open it, play for a minute or two, then close it again.
Sony just completely missed the point of a portable system with the PSP. 3D graphics also aren't appealing on a small screen. Keep it simple, keep it clean. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9What a retard comment.
You're forgeting one very little detail in your calculations:
GOOD FREAKIN GAMES.
end of story. - syl1985, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@tastypastry
The game Pheonix Wright: Ace Attorney requires it... great game.. - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Seconded, for truth that really hits a soft spot for some inexplicable reason.
- curbcheck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Two screens, vs one screen.
How can it lose? - Drewboy64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7My first thought when I saw this article:
Ummm... the DS actually has games, that's why it's so dominating. I've grown so tired of waiting for a good solid PSP title. Meanwhile I have so much more fun with the DS. To be honest, this was one of the bigger reasons I didn't wanted to get a PS3 and opted for a Wii and 360 instead. I didn't want to buy a system cost a fortune and a year or so later find no games for it. - Kryptik1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You really are hypersensitive about the whole PSP/DS thing aren't you Techni? He didn't even bring the PSP or its games into it, and you jumped in as if to berate him for evern saying that the DS had good games by saying "PSP HAS BETTER ONES, SO NYAH!".
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'll defend my PS3 to the end, but it's obvious the DS is dominating because the PSP is *****. Too easy to scratch, long loading times, and horrible battery life make the extra P a damned lie. Where's that redesign they've been whispering about.
- bob_the_alien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually, The Ds is not completely Backward Compatible, it will not play GB or GBC games, it only plays GBA.
Thus is why I still own a GBA, so I can play all my old games as well. Which really was a great marketing idea for Nintendo, keep GBA alive even after DS, and have the GBA carts to be the only ones supported on the DS.
I know many people who have kept both the GBA and the DS, actually not only did I keep the GBA, I ended up upgrading to the SP. which is another great idea from those marketeers at Nintendo.
I currently own a GBC, a GBA, a GBA SP, a DS, and a DS lite. and I've actually thought about purchasing a GBA Micro, every time a new one comes out that has more features and is sleeker, I want to get it, and so do many others. and you have to admit the DS lite, is mos def way prettier than the ds was. - GenoBaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I agree. I have 5 sisters and they all lost interests in games when the N64 was out. Mainly because gaming got complicated. The PS2 controller alone has about 12 buttons and 2 analog sticks just to play a game. The DS (and the Wii) my sisters are playing it more than i am. Even my mother can't seem to stop playing Brain Age. She loves to brag that her brain age is 20 and mine is 22. Every time my youngest sister gives me a call I can hear Elite Beat Agent in the background.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Digg this guy up..
I made my friends buy DSs just so we could play Dual Strike. What an amazing game.
Oh, and FFIII is pretty ***** sweet too. - DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I agree with this particular POV. I have a short attention span for games, but this hasn't been much of a problem with the DS. I beat the New Super Mario Brothers recently, and beat the last half of the game on the *****. I'd take it with me on a long haul and then just close the lid when I was done... open it up the next time around and be at the same spot.
Good stuff - Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I've been a gamer all my life. And the amount of games I've been buying has been on a steady decline with each new generation of consoles. The DS has been the exception. It's been an absolute revival in my gaming tendencies. Ive already got 3 DS's (one for me, one for my wife, and a spare) and I've got a stack of games that rivals my DVD collection. There are just SOOOOO many GREAT games its almost like you cant go wrong.
The answer is games, games, games.
The fact that they're not all 3d graphics pushers does a lot for the actual quality of the gameplay in my opinion. - modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5still too many games aimed at kids for the DS. there are a handful of games i like, but i would like to see more games not aimed at kids.
- Prometheus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have a lazy eye, whoohoo! Too bad I still suck at Metroid
- Ins0mn1ac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why??
Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney!!
Thats Why!!!! - Darthyoshiboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Kielistic
I'm sorry, but syl1985 is in Australia and is talking in AU $'s, and yes in Australia the PSP is $399.99 MSRP for the Value pack. You really shouldn't neglect your brain like that. - hamstereater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4DS was made to play while pooping.
This is a good thing. - jacenat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5the psp actually has the exact same feature
just tap the on/off switch and the system will go to suspend. no need for a savepoint or anything else.
you can leave it in suspend about 6-8 weeks bevore the batteries are empty maybe even more (i play alot with the psp, so 6 weeks was the maximum for me). and of course, this works with movies too.
but i guess this is a fanboy issue again ... - ErinIsADrunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4while the "casual" market has played a role in the success of the DS it is no way the main factor that the DS and Nintendo's handhelds have been successful in the past. The 2 reasons Nintendo dominates the handheld market is battery life and the fact that they have actual portable games.
Look at prior competitors such as Sega's Game Gear, Atari's Lynx and of course Sony's PSP, all of which had/have vastly superior technology to that of their Nintendo rival be it GB, GBC, GBA or DS. However, Nintendo beat the competition because their systems batteries lasted for significantly longer then the competition, I remember my original Gameboy lasting in excess of 20 hours on 2 Double-A batteries.
The other part is that the games on Nintendo's handhelds are designed to be portable, you can play them while your riding the bus to work for 15-20 minutes then save it and turn it off, whereas the competition, the PSP is a prime example of this, have tended to be ports or games designed as if they are for consoles and those systems tended to become more like portable consoles then a handheld gaming system. Lastly you can't ignore the role that price has played in the success of Nintendo's handhelds, they have tended to be such cheaper and therefore making them an easier sell to consumers. - mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4syl1985: You make some excellent points that I definitely agree with, but the real reason I dugg you up was for "gg wanker."
- Layne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3gp2x ftw. Linux in a handheld is a homebrew and emulation heaven.
- revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I did research which included asking PSP owners what games they like. The answer, more than once, was: I don't have any games yet, but check it out, I can watch movies and listen to music on it... and emulate. Sure this was just friends and family, but from what I gathered it wasn't really a gaming system.
- syl1985, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not just hotel dusk - Elite Beat Agents
And pretty much any cinematic in a game uses both... -
