- doshindude, on 10/10/2007, -6/+167remember: life is just an FPS with better graphics.
- holycrapitsed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+71Gamers are also better at handling their left hands and lotion.
- cr1t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+62Yea but AI sucks.
- snarkleclackers, on 10/10/2007, -2/+55Except, when you die, there aren't even any respawn points or anything.
- netdroid9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35They call *This* a game? Who made it, EA? God, I miss the old days. Open door, throw axe, kill dragon... Yup, the eighties were a simpler time...
- Zaggynl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34And a disturbing lack of (quick-)save/load functions, no pause button, and no quit button.
Never have lag though, or loss of fps, and the hardware is so so, needs a lot of sleep though. - Virak, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34Having sex with someone who can't move is rape, not poor controls.
- krolm, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31gamers have lives?
- ChrisRX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24Gamers are better at handling life? Try telling that to Jack Thompson.
- nobiology, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18the fact that you started your post with "hellz ya" actually put gamers back behind normal people again, thanks.
- blumph, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17if gamers had a life, they wouldn't be gamers. and if they are, which they can't be, they should play this game:
http://www.getafirstlife.com/
guaranteed no lag servers. - shirosamurai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12FTA: "Ok, I didn't get my degree in psychology..."
No *****, eh? This article is bollocks.
Sure, games do promote various skills (coordination, problem solving, things of that sort), but most the real hardcore gamers I know are either dropouts or else are just barely scraping their way through college. - mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10buried as inaccurate because 40% of the people pictured are women
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I'm sorry but the whole premise of gamers adapting to life with an upper-edge to the average folk is just silly. I've heard that some gamers have a higher reaction rate and are better at solving puzzles than the average person but it's just conditioning and doesn't make you any smarter at life. If this was true you can say the same thing about any challenging situation, e.g. someone who works out regularly and overcomes their pain threshold, a university student struggling through academic life and prevails... I suppose it's the level of confidence that builds up after you know you've faced a challenge an overcame it.
There are lots of gamers here and I'm probably going to get dugg down, but it's the truth. You can change your outlook on life by pretty much overcoming any challenging situation. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Quit button = a .45 to the brain.
- sirlancelot88, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9If Digg was a person, it would have Aspergers.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10"FTW, I hate it, but I'm going to beat it somehow."
***** the world? I thought they were gamers, not a biker gang... - cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8No then it's like Contra with the 3 lives. You may take a few hits but after you die, you have to do it all over again. :(
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I rarely ever say this but fing LOL!!! Ever been to a lan party? Or a massive lan party? Gamers are typically terrible at handling life. Seriously I hope the author was speaking ironically.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I actually have 3 lvl 70 lives and a lvl 42 night elf druid life.
- Kratisto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Just think of it as surprise sex. Any gamer girls should be ready for people jumping out from behind corners with mal intentions.
- sofaKing812, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Secret to life:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A - ahnonamis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Using extreme examples like that to generalize the gaming community is what most people in the media and politics do wrong in the first place.
- CountryBoyRI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Patently untrue. I game all the time. I definitely get laid. Quite frequently.
Further, I'm quite successful at my job and I handle life very well, thank you very much. Point of fact, I'm considered the go-to-guy when my family and friends have THEIR lives falling apart because they know that I know what the hell to do in a crisis. Do I attribute that to games? No. I attribute that to having a solid head on my shoulders to begin with BEFORE I started gaming, due to parents who taught me to think my way through a crisis, a decent education, and the military who taught me that people in an emergency gravitate to the calmest person around. - ritter99, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Gamers don't get laid - but they're pretty good at handling that.
- TheDreadDiggerD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The attorney.
- ahnonamis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Or necrophilia. Let's not be unfair here!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+15Bull-*****-crap!
Real life is no video game. - Kratisto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I found this to be untrue: I don't bother beating a ***** game. If my teacher at school was significantly (and obviously) less intelligent than I, ended up getting a B rather than an A because the class was light a bad game: No challenge, logic, or motivation. Gamers are probably better problem solvers, and certainly not lazy... but... not motivated, in many cases.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Dugg for FPS Doug reference
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If you remember the 80's, you didn't experience the 80's
- ultrawhat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Someone hasn't heard of reincarnation.
- cococooky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4OK, well that particular Jack Tompsom is a dick head. After reading that, all the other references make sense.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sorry mega message ahead:
I'm sorry but this article doesn't cut the mustard. Games are easier to handle than real life, if you lose or make a mistake in a game you have numerous chances to make that correction. In real life challenges you either make it or break it - you're rarely ever given a second chance where it matters the most. E.g. making it to level 20 in Splinter Cell brings about satisfaction, making it through a life challenge which can be anything from starting your own blog to getting that elusive job is not only satisfying but also increases your self-esteem, confidence and a whole lot of other things. Another thing important to mention is that in most games you already know what the outcome is - E.g. in Splinter Cell (I play this a lot) you know Sam is going to ultimately save the world from terrorists with your help, but you can just drop the game when you're bored - no harm done. An extreme life challenge such as getting cancer and dealing with cancer is completely different. You don't know what the outcome is, and most people probably won't want to just give up when they're bored of their cancer either.
Yeah I know my message is just taking things to the next degree and most people already know what I'm saying but I thought I would just jot it down as a message. - skealoha86, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5buried as inaccurate.
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4 damn you double posting digg!!!!
- Veurruckte, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Those are hardcore gamers though. I think the author meant the average gamer, who doesn't scream his head off whenever he dies.
- Robcataus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's a well written article, but the truth is that not enough gamers are able to apply those attributes in the real world where the same source of their "intelligence and wit" also made blunt their social skills and other essential attributes. Look at Digg, very intelligent people, most of the time, but half the jokes/witticisms written in the comment boards would be completely lost in the real world. I feel like the same applies to gamers and the average person.
- UnstableMind, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3How do I enable God mode? And what the ***** is that infinite money cheat?
- HautePie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3and you get an extra one for every 100 coins you collect
- Malhavoc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes, because we all know that your success in life is determined by how tan you are.
- Zaggynl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Lies, LifeĀ® has no save/load function.
- blumph, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4actually YOU are Time Person of the Year. look up the top for a button labeled "bury".
- sleeknerve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3HAHAHA!!, if we were better at handling lives, we wouldn't be sitting on a chair all day with a controller in our hands instead of being out in the real world
- Nurjle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Me and my tribe are superior beings because of the way we live. Others may scoff at us, call us childish, but we know better."
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3We're good at killing stuff
- lowerlogic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I can't join or login :(
- Tigdigger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Coming from a gamer, this seems to be somewhat true.
Unfortunately for this to happen though, we actually need to step away from the controller/keyboard. - thejoker86, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3what about teaching social skills? most gamers i know have rather poor social skills in real life... i thought that was a key thing with handling life
- ultrawhat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have too much patience, so I read replies to buried comments on Digg.
