- thegamingguy, on 10/29/2008, -8/+466Spore has come and gone.
- Oztog, on 10/29/2008, -8/+343Chris Hecker... ***** you!
- musntSurfatWork, on 10/29/2008, -8/+280Spore rhymes with prostitute.
- unknownpoltroon, on 10/29/2008, -1/+229I waited 3 years for a game, that I wouldn't buy because of DRM, that I played for an hour before realizing it was hopeless *****. Does that sum it up?
- heynow21, on 10/29/2008, -2/+138EA hires too many MBAs and not enough game playing losers who could make their games better.
- iatethecake, on 10/29/2008, -1/+136Spore.. oh I remember that game now...
- WhereAmI, on 10/29/2008, -21/+155Pfft, Spore. Its all about LittleBigPlanet now.
- daridave, on 10/29/2008, -8/+139I'm so mad, I waste that mone... oh, wait. I didn't buy it. I don't care if it's come and gone... it never "was" for me.
- bjs3171, on 10/29/2008, -2/+130if the game is too complex for the wider audience, then DON'T ***** MAKE IT. Don't start making it and THEN decide that the game being made should be something completely different. What a ***** waste.
- jtbndy, on 10/29/2008, -1/+127Don't forget all the stupid expansions that add options to the creature creator.... that will cost $30 bucks.
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -3/+93Cry more. Wil Wright should have dug in his heels if it's not the game he wanted. He didn't so you get this spore *****.
- Koushiro, on 10/29/2008, -10/+90Spore sucks more because of the fact they just crammed four other better games together.
Asteroids to Populous to Civilizations to Star Control. :( - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -19/+98Spore sucks because of DRM
- unknownpoltroon, on 10/29/2008, -1/+77" "It was just about being engaged with the universe as a set of systems, and being able to build toys that manifested our fascination with these systems and our love for them."
Promote this guy.
"I was the founding member of the 'cute' team," he says with pride. "Ocean [Quigley, Spore's art director] and Will were really the founding members of the 'science' team. Ocean would make the cell game look exactly like a petri dish with all these to-scale animals and Will would say, 'That's the greatest thing I've ever seen!' and some of us were thinking, 'I'm not sure about that.'"
Fire this man.
And I MIGHT think about buying one of your games in the distant future. - Cadicus, on 10/29/2008, -1/+68"For instance, creature morphology actually mattered. This implied deeper strategy to creature creation. You have a small inkling of this in the Cell stage where placement of parts somewhat mattered. For example, spikes placed behind your creature saved you from being bitten when chased. But, the strategy that earlier prototypes implied went beyond placement of parts. The length of limbs or spine felt like it mattered. If you had a forward-heavy animal with legs placed in the back, it would run poorly as it tries (and fails) to counteract its own weight. "
"a ten-foot tall SPORE can be as effective as a Lion in combat, as fast as a Cheetah, and as stealthy as a one foot tall chameleon. And because this is so, the Sporepedia is filled with such impractical creations. "
I could not agree more with these parts. The cell stage had strategy behind it.. that's what made it fun. But the animal/tribal/civ stages were a joke! Point and click crap. And making a game around simon says is a joke.. - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -3/+68It is possible for 2 people to share the same opinion
- jermm, on 10/29/2008, -4/+68Spore is like The Sims: fun for about 20 min at a time.
It doesn't have the legs of , the fun of , the visuals of .
They lost the nerd support by ***** up the DRM, and nerds sell a huge amount of games to their friends.
(I'm guessing Spore will get its junk back in expansions/Spore 2) - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -2/+64It is possible for 2 people to share the same opinion
- liquisoft, on 10/29/2008, -0/+54I had fun with the Creature Creator, and then I left it at that. A friend of mine pre-ordered Spore and was incredibly excited when it finally came out. The next day his smile had turned to disappointment. Poor guy.
- animeguru, on 10/29/2008, -0/+49Maxis has been turning out ***** products for years. Ever since they realized how to turn any product into a mediocre cash cow that targets slack-jawed yokels (The Sims), the games they put out are sub par.
I've been awaiting a decent SimCity for years now. Sadly, it seems that SC4/Rush Hour will be the last in a fantastic series. Now we build cities based on ***** emotions and auras or get everything for free so we can stomp it back to the stone age with Godzilla.
I can't remember the last Maxis product I bought or even gave a ***** about, which is most unfortunate given their stellar library in the past. - wolfing, on 10/29/2008, -8/+55That Chris Hecker probably evolved from Sarah Palin in the cell stage
- SoopaflySAM, on 10/29/2008, -21/+66Mr BabyMan. I know you used a script to get FP!
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -0/+44Wasn't complex... exactly the point.
- Kohaxx, on 10/29/2008, -0/+44Ugh, why anyone would want to dumb down a game is beyond me. Spore in its current incarnation is fun in only half of the gameplay, and very limited and unpractical at that. I can't believe that at one point taping feet all over a giant fat balloon made a less effective creature than a well designed creature. That is the single most bothersome thing about the game, that whatever you create physically, the entire point of Spore, won't really cause consequences.
- rz8472, on 10/29/2008, -1/+44He was probably also behind the dumbing down of Simcity. Simcity Societies was terrible, especially since it gave you the option of creating a 'fun' city with candy cane street lights and everyone working in chocolate factories or clown schools.
- getbusyliving, on 10/29/2008, -1/+42It sucks because it sucks.
- ucbmckee, on 10/29/2008, -9/+50No, it actually sucks. A lot.
- Foenetik, on 10/29/2008, -24/+63***** spore and all it's ***** little expansion packs. what a faggy game.
- MistyEstelle, on 10/29/2008, -5/+43Believe it or not I could live with the DRM issues if it was a good game. Irritating yes, but for a good game I'd grumble and buy anyway. The reason I haven't bought Spore yet.. or even pirated it... is because of how the gameplay and look/feel of the game has changed so drastically since I first saw those videos years ago that got me so excited about the game. It really does sound like that post has a point, someone on the team at EA (Hecker) thought that science wouldn't sell, and pushed for the game to be dumbed down and given cuter graphics.. which is what it became, and is what I have no interest in playing. :/
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -0/+37Sim City 4 is very highly complex and has done just fine. Maxis wasn't just looking for profit (which probably would have left Will's version very much intact)...they were looking for a goldmine.
- scarwars, on 10/29/2008, -4/+41They should've had Sid Meier on board.
He was the only one that could've made the game magical - Pedobear, on 10/29/2008, -0/+36Make him play Spore. That's the worst possible punishment I can think of.
- MEGACAMZ, on 10/29/2008, -1/+37I just wish EA would too.
- trafficlight, on 10/29/2008, -0/+36This is the sole reason the game is bad. I wanted my evolution decisions to affect the outcome of the game.
I also didn't like that you could just start completely over with your character at any point of the evolution and change everything. I think there should have been limitations to the amount of change you could make at any one time. You should have to work with the previous decisions you made. See above. - Digscuttle, on 10/29/2008, -0/+36Yes, when I saw the announcement for the Cute/Creepy add-on, I thought, "Neat, I may even fire up Spore again to try that out!"...then I saw it was $30, and the interest needle went back down to zero. They should have given out the first pack like that for free at the very least to keep people interested.
I appreciate Spore, but I just don't feel like playing it anymore. - joegibes, on 10/29/2008, -9/+43AKA IT SUCKED
- leerayIG88, on 10/29/2008, -7/+41games like this are the cause of violence.
- whatthefu, on 10/29/2008, -99/+132Spore doesn't suck. It just didn't live up to its massive potential.
- cdawzrd, on 10/29/2008, -1/+33This post is an excellent read, now the differences between the old demos and the released game make more sense... what a terrible move on Hecker's part.
- EvanVolm, on 10/29/2008, -18/+50Why are you idiots burying this guy? Because he actually enjoyed a game?
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -2/+32Well ill tell you this, I'm glad I pirated it before I went out and bought the stupid thing. I do that with every over-hyped game, and I end up buying every last one within a day of trying it.
Except this one. - ScionX, on 10/29/2008, -0/+30why do i get the feeling that you have that saved on your PC somewhere hoping you get to use it.
- mycoplasma, on 10/29/2008, -4/+32You have earned yourself a digg.
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 10/29/2008, -0/+27Daikatana?
- getbusyliving, on 10/29/2008, -9/+35The most disappointing video game in all history.
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -10/+36Yeah! If it weren't for the game itself it would have been a great game!
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -0/+26Dear future developers:
Keep Chris Hecker FAR AWAY from your projects. He will only serve to ruin it because he is a philistine and an idiot and assumes everyone else is too. - shutaro, on 10/29/2008, -11/+35I blame communism.
- Wangarang, on 10/29/2008, -1/+25***** Spore. I'm loving Fallout 3 right now.
- henrikakselsen, on 10/29/2008, -1/+25So....what should we do with him? Tar? Feathers? Waterboarding?
