wow... how "old"... - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26And because Mickey can really kick ass.
- Scopitone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23It endears itself to the massive inner child that most people, even the most jaded, have inside. Granted, there are parts when I'm playing this game and wish I could just skip right past it for fear of a friend stumbling in and asking, "What the ***** are you watching? Winnie The Pooh?!"
"Uh, no. No! Man, no way. I uh put in the wrong DVD, I MEANT to put in this like...totally hard core barely legal porno. With naughty teens, breasts, and buttocks? Don't judge me!" - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19You're an idiot. Comparing Kingdom Hearts to Oblivion is like comparing apples to space shuttles.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17As Gabe of Penny Arcade put it:

I’m a huge fan of all these films so when a character like the Beast joins my party I get pretty excited. Then when I discover his super special link move with Soara where they stand back to back and the beast puts is huge paw on Sora's shoulder and gives him this reassuring look as if to say “it’s alright, we’ve got this.” Well...*Sniff*...I get a little emotional. I know it’s cheesy but I even bought the collectors edition strategy guide. The hints are nice but the game just isn’t that hard. The real reason I got it was for the sticker book it comes with. Yes that’s right, a sticker book with 400 stickers! Every time you meet a character or get an item you take the corresponding sticker off and place it next to the picture in the journal. Try to imagine a 28 year old man squealing in a high pitched voice to his wife in the other room. “Ooh honey I just met Mulan, I get to put her sticker in the journal, I GET TO PUT HER STICKER IN THE JOURNAL!”
I’m not proud.

The game appeals to people who enjoy any one or more of:
1) RPGs,
2) disney movies,
3) the Final Fantasy series.
Myself, I'm a fan of #1 and #3. My girlfriend is a fan of #2, and #3 to a lesser extent. So it's something we can both get excited about.
My favorite part of both, honestly, has been seeing FF7 characters in all their high-poly, high-res glory. Finding Sephiroth in KH1 was one of my favorite moments. The FF7 chars _deserve_ a chance at high-res life, with voices and all. Although, who the hell does Aeris's voice? It's all monotone, and sucky. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"Comparing Kingdom Hearts to Oblivion is like comparing apples to space shuttles."
Thank you. The phrase "comparing apples to oranges" is horribly misused because they are, in fact, very comparable objects. Apples and space shuttles, on the other hand, are not. - 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Because Utada Hikaru is a hottie.
- dm1030, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Now I have to hide this story so my wife doesn't see that over 20 is considered "old" :)
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I also enjoyed mickey in cover-all black cloak in KH2. He looks like some kind of mickey mouse executioner, or something.
- Yuffie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13lol, I never seen mickey so pissed off before I played this game :)
- PabloIV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Warm fresh baked donuts filled with caramel and covered in semi-sweet chocolate.
Never seen 'em but they would rock! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13My son loves this game...It's because it is a cross of disney & FF. What could be better than that? :)
- jokerr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8KH & KH2 are great games. If your friend's look at you weird about playing a game with Pooh, be sure to tell them about Pooh's power, http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/03/31
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11dont you mean simple and clean
- Yuffie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8lol, I don't care my friends say. Winnie The Pooh kicks ass :)
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Um...a cultural dropout that visits one of the most popular social bookmarking sites?
- cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7there is not set age for this game... im 22 male and i was totally excited for KH:2, there is no age or gender gap for this game... good story, good gameplay, just because you play with pooh (no sick pun) doesnt mean its a kiddie game. also if it were a "kiddie" game there wouldnt be a harder setting for the game... though the mid setting is too easy, im going to start over on harder setting. to see if it kicks it up a bit.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's a good game. It's not about how "cute" the characters are, it's not (totally) about the integration of movies I've grown up around, it is just genuinely a good game. If some people would give it a chance instead of pretending how masculine and grown up they are, playing all the bloody, manly games out right now, they'd realize that.
I don't agree with the "one button mashing" to win the game...maybe on easy mode, but there are three seperate modes...Proud is what I've played and although it's not as much of a challenge as hardcore Japanese RPG's (SMT series...etc), it's just as difficult as the Final Fantasy series (although that doesn't say much...those are some easy games). You have to place your abilities correctly, configure your friends well, and learn combos and targeting systems to get through this game. Also the action button is incredibly important to get by with, I actually died to the first boss twice because I didn't understand how to kill him at first.
Although at some parts it feels a bit childish, it holds many challenges and some of the bosses really kick my ass (Sephiroth....I still can't beat that bastard). Granted, it's fun as hell to play in Tron (and hear the actual actor playing the in-game character), and it's fun to play along with Jack in Pirates of the Caribbean....cool to fight alongside Squall, Cloud, Tifa, Auron.....but all in all it's the gameplay that buys it for me. I don't watch Disney movies (unless my girlfriend convinces me to really), and I have no infatuation with cutesy games, I just like it. - cbrack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The opening to KH1 was kickass thanks to her
- kupo19, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think it sells so well because it's one of the most accessible RPGs on the market. Although the gameplay can be agonizingly slow at times, it has great variety and a driven plot.
You pubescent 14 year olds can whine about "girly" characters all you want, but we all know you jack off to Sora and Riku slash late at night when no one's watching. - Dari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Because it's an exceptional game, an exceptional idea, with an unchallanged vision. I love the combat system, I love the characters, I love the variety of places to travel and characters to meet.. I could go on.
- a7knight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sure, it is a Disney product. I was hesitant at first when I played it, seeing characters like Donald Duck, Goofy, and Mickey Mouse. However, once you get past the fact that these are Disney characters, the game is surprisingly kick ass. I loved the first one and, as a matter of fact, I will be picking up the second one tonight. I highly recommend the game to anyone, whether you hate Disney or love Disney.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thank you for sharing that enlightening comment. You've really enhanced my understanding of the article, and the topic at large.
I await your next insightful post with baited breath. - Kev585, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How about story?
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not surprised you hadn't heard of it, considering how high up on that throne you are.
You put that very intelligently, but your very participation in an internet phenomenon like this definitely demonstrates that you're not anything close to a cultural dropout. - Glich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Great Story, Great music, good acting and people and places that already hold a place in our hearts what else chould you ask for (Besides a longer game)
- CognitiveRes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have to agree with you on everything but the characters. The comic relife was overbearing.
- TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kingdom Hearts 2 is incredibly more addictive than the first one. I'm 28 years old and grew up with some of the Disney titles and that's what attracted me to the first game. In addition to being a fan of Final Fantasy during my college days I was also attracted to Kingdom Hearts 1. It's an incredible idea that worked so well for the first game and even better in the second. I love TRON to death but the level did kinda leave me with a lot to desire. The light cycle game is pretty lame but I got to whoop the MCP's ass! What could be better than that?
As far as story line goes...it's kind of a continuation of the first game and as most of the Final Fantasy games it's a little obscure and vague. Apparently Final Fantasy 12 is going to incorporate the same style of game play that Kingdom Hearts has and that is fine with me. Turn based RPGs are great but I think it's time for Final Fantasy to start heading in a new direction. - Yuffie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5button masher or not, The game is fun as hell and thats all that matters.
- krayzie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5
Both Utada Hikaru's songs Simple and Clean/Sactuary match the game so well - jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My main criticism for KH2 is that the cut scenes were not as well edited for english as in the first KH game. The priority was given to japan this time around as the success in japan with the first one was undeniable. However in english KH2 does serve its purpose well in having very disney worlds and a very square storyline.
Hope you guys enjoyed them both as I did, not only for the gameplay (which is admittedly not as mature but good anyways) but for the disney-ness of it all. (if you couldn't tell I am a slight Disney fanboy) - antipro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah that comment does make me sound quite young. But the fact that I said Girls and not Women does put the age thing into a different context. I probably should have said it differently. Well judging by the fact that this whole thread has turned into a battle of semantics and intent I almost assuredly should have said it differently.
Oh well I sounded like a spaz and it will take me awhile to live that down. I apologize if I offended anyone with my immaturity. - TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The quote made my day, thank you coheedcollapse!
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know "Cloud, Sephiroth and all" are an awesome bonus, but I'm not sure they are the main draw.
- humanpowered, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm surprised that got modded down. The girl gamer market is huge, most just don't know how to market to them. Antipro is probably right.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Kingdom Hearts 2 doesn't suffer from the crazy camera action that the first one had....one would know that if they had actually played it.
- FireStrife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Although I can protest to not being my usual game style from SE games. I have to say the storyline is quite superb making it even lovable by most people. The sweet CG's and that love storyline makes you want to play it more.
- pippintook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So I went to the mall on Saturday and made two purchases - the Advent Children DVD and Volume 3 of the Kingdom Hearts manga. Apparently a Final Fantasy movie CAN work! Maybe someday Pixar will make a Kingdom Hearts movie seeing as they're owned by Disney now? It could happen...maybe...
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know grown men who have played this game with their children and loved it.
I love 1 and 2, just beat 2 a day ago. Great story, and Mickey is some serious stuff. - pervy_the_clown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the game was awesome...plain and simple
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even in the easy settings the game is difficult for the under 10y.o. players. Sure, everything dies when you hit them on easy, but the many puzzles, jobs and RPG elements baffle the young.
I think the success among adults is that it brings you back to your childhood. Nostalgia at its best. (Atlantis was a little too childish though, but an interesting level none-the-less) - SixSider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everytime this story pops up I read it has Why Kiligon Heart is so Huge.
Man, I'm a geek - Aurra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Final Fantasy characters aren't in it much, but Auron in Hades is a perfect fit.
Yuna, Rikku, and Paine, however... - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I remember correctly, Legends of Dragoon was brought out by Sony and had nothing to do with Square...but it was a good RPG.
- cbrack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@merreborn
you see FF Advent Children yet? Pays a great tribute to the almighty Final Fantasy 7.. What a good movie. - yodaj007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The story in this one is pretty good I think. I was disappointed by how little the Final Fantasy characters have to do with the overall plot. They hardly get any screentime, really. You fight alongside many of them one at a time, they're in charge of Hollow Bastion, basically, but that's it. The entire rest of the game is Disney.
Sephiroth is back. He's hard. But he's not really in the story.
Honestly, though, the gameplay in KH2 wasn't that good. It's not much of a challenge even on Hard. I died on a few of the big bosses, but other than that it was a no-brainer. The Gummi Ship is much better in this one.
I do recommend the game. The first few hours is a tad slow, but after you become Sora it picks up nicely.
EDIT: I absolutely agree with coheedcollapse's post below, except for the button masher part. - Rojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It could just be that its been the only really fun game square has put out since its merger with enix. Anyone else remember Legends of Dragoon. Ahh the Glory days.
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Reminiscent of the yoda fights in the "new" SW movies.
- requiem18th, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>>Playing this game will eventually turn you into a vegetable.
You mean. Like a cactuar? - nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've yet to see an ad for Kingdom Hearts II.
I guess they don't air them during 24. -
