I can't stand Gears of War. - Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Breaking news: "Individuals are demonstrating their own opinions!"
- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ironically enough, this article has a TON of spoilers for the story. I seriously don't recommend reading it until you've finished the game.
- shug7272, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gears of War looks good to me, just not as good as hyped to be. Alot of it is just running from one hiding place to another while shooting and things in the distance. All and all a good game, looks great, not perfect.
- poundcake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The author's argument seems pretty well balanced. He liked the game but thought the story needed help. Fair enough. At least he didn't let his preferences totally cloud his rating.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You hate Gears of War because it treats the massive killing of thousands of people as passive entertainment?
- Aharoni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, I digged your story, Mr. Allen, but I totally disagree.
If all video games need a good plot, then Super Mario Bros. must be a very bad game.
Now, I know there is no way to compare these two cases. Super Mario Bros isn't quite as cinematic as GoW, but simply because the game is Cinematic does that immediately mean it can rely only on plot to be good? is a cinematic game immediately not "fun"?
Now, don't get me wrong, Mr. Allen. I'm a sucker for a good plot. Oh yeah. But the plot will make or break a game only when its emphasized. If Final Fantasy had a bad plot - the game would not work. If Burnout 3: Takedown had (if at all) a bad story - nobody cares.
So far, the great reviews for the game comes from the gameplay and graphics. These are the emphasis of the game (and two major ones). The plot - not so much. Does that make it a bad game? not really. If I drive a car on the Autobahn, is the ride not fun simply because you can't enjoy the view? not at all. Believe me, view or no view, on the Autobahn you have the time of your life.
So I digged your post. But I can also tell you to rest easy. The game (probably) deserves it, if it has received such praises on graphics and gameplay. - MrHapi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I heard on the Epic game forums that this is going to be a trilogy like the Halo series so for a trilogy it is necessary for certain information to be left out. For example, who the heck is gonna come after RAAM and before the "Queen?" Oh, and if there is no "King" then GoW would be posing off of Starcraft with the Zerg queen Kerrigan.
- xBBx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I commend you for voicing your own opinion about the game in spite of what popular belief is. I have played GoW before at an event and I got hooked. I can't say if I agree or disagree with what you say since I don't have the retail copy in my hands, but I do commend you
- vosburg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do not read if u dont want to be "spoiled"
STORY BE DAMNED.I am a owner of Gears of War and while i am no where near dissapointed or hate the game, i must say the "background" of the story just lacked "if any" depth and over all sucked, which is why i right now am frustrated at how the developers say to hell with the story. That is why i give it a 9.0-9.3. Why would i rank a game that lacks any story depth so high? Because the graphics and visuals of Gears of War are the best ever on any video gaming consol ever. I literally had to pause the game after 2 minuites of play and tell my self, "I cant believe video games have come this far". It actually exceeded my expectations visual wise. Also The gameplay is equally impressive since its completely unlike anything before. Cover, cover fire, precise shots, and good decisions are all essential to survival in Gears of War. With all of those combined with intense combat and the best graphics the game gives u a kind of REAL feel, Like you are actually in a gunfight, and that is what makes it so damn exciting during play. If u decide to be Dirty Harry and go blazing out in the open, you will die. And since thats how ever shooter is these days it was very impressive to experience a new style that is extremely challenging and rewarding. Alas, the games one weakness is its story. However the overall concept of the story is GREAT. Tt had so much potential but it was abandoned. Why? i do not know. If this game's story had been more refined in depth and giving us some background instead of being Rediculously incomplete It could have easily been a 10.0 caliber game and personally to me the best shooter and possibly game ever. Mabye its because im an RPG fanatic as well and the game i played before gears of war was Oblivion. However it's story could have been so great but wasnt. Just like Mr. Jonas Allen said its so incomplete that i am left with way to many questions. Why are the locusts fighting humanity? What is the planets name and if its not earth then why are we there? Why did Marcus's father have a lab in his mansion? Was he a fan of the locusts? Did he create them? What was Marcus saving his father from? Who the hell was that female voice at the ending cinamatic scene? Theres just to many questions left unawnsered, and now i have to hope and prey every day that the sequel will shine more light onto this matter. Cliffy B. please take heed to our outcries and do your proofreading before you release the next sequel. However even as incomplete as the story is i must say that i was still blown completely away by the game technical genuis and over all "fun feedback" if thats what u wanna call it, and thats why i must say Gears of War is still a must have, story be damned. - indirect, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Plots in video games are needed like plots are needed in pornos.
