- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -2/+59I wasted my time so you don't have to: Xbox 360 > Wii > Playstation 3 (in terms of controller battery life)
- Juntistik, on 02/01/2008, -6/+48Surprising results, but I wish they tested the 360's rechargeable battery pack in conjunction with the out of the box batteries. I really thought the PS3's Sixaxis controller was going to take the cake due no rumble. I would like to see the difference with Dual shock 3 as well.
- JigoroKano, on 02/01/2008, -10/+45I leave my PS3 controller hooked up to the PS3 via mini-USB cable when not in use, so I've never run a battery down. You can also plug it into a computer, laptop, or even a wall socket with the proper adapter (like the one that comes with iPods). I think it's the most convenient despite having the shortest battery life.
- slamm71, on 02/01/2008, -2/+34Sure doesn't feel like my Wiimotes last 36 hours.
- tendonut, on 02/01/2008, -0/+26I forgot my Wavebird took batteries. One day it stopped working and I was confused as hell, then I remembered that no one has perfected wireless electricity yet.
- Ajajadude, on 02/01/2008, -2/+21The only time I ever have a problem is when I leave my PS3 on to fold and forget to turn off my controller (when it's not plugged in). An auto-off feature would be great for those moments of forgetfulness, but it's not a huge deal.
- techlinks, on 02/01/2008, -7/+24Thanks for killing the environment.
Get some rechargeable's. Yikes. - kablammo, on 02/01/2008, -11/+26I use Ikea batteries. (Yes, they make batteries now.) $2.50 for a 10-pack and they're just as good as the brand names.
- charlescheese, on 02/01/2008, -7/+22I have a DS3 and I don't notice much of a difference in battery life between it and my sixaxis. The sixaxis might be slightly better, but I'm not sure. One thing I do know is that my DS3 has never dropped its connection with the PS3 even once. I've never had a battery life problem with either controller, so I tend to think that battery life is a total non issue. The fact that the sixaxis is rechargeable out of the box more than makes up for having 18 hours of battery life. 18 hours is plenty, and like I said, I game all the time and battery life is never an issue for me.
The only battery life issues I ever had were with the Wii, and that's because it didn't include a rechargeable battery, which is a sin against all gamers in my opinion. Nintendo is raking in the profits on the wii and they can't toss a rechargeable battery into the wiimote. It's *****. Microsoft I can kind of understand, because they were losing so much money on their consoles at first. With Nintendo, they've been making nice profits from the start, they could have easily tossed in a rechargeable battery for probably $1 per console.
I have one of those charging docks, and I literally just set the DS3 and sixaxis in the dock when I'm done gaming and it charges. No plugging in or anything, you just set it down in the dock and you're done. It works so well. - n8r0n, on 02/01/2008, -15/+29I have a massive collection of 15 minute rechargeable batteries that I use for all four of my wii remotes, my wavebirds, and my logitech ps2 controllers. I think they are far better than spending a ton of money on rechargeable packs and charger docks.
- xdeliriumx, on 02/01/2008, -1/+15I bought 2 battery packs and a charger that charges them both at the same time for my Xbox 360 for $12 and they are stellar. I would say they get longer battery life then what this test says hands down.
- mustbepatient, on 02/01/2008, -3/+16No, they're not! We have small children, so we go through a ton of batteries. We were using IKEA batteries and other generics, but the best bang for the buck is actually the premium duracell/energizer batteries in big packs at costco.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -4/+16If only the 360's life lasted as long as the batteries.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -0/+11This also happened to me.
- X18999, on 02/01/2008, -0/+10I guess people forgot sony said they will replace them for free when that happens. I hope sony didn't forget as well.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -1/+11Not sure why you are getting dugg down, rechargeable AA is the way to go. You can use them in anything, and for $10 you can get at least a dozen if you look for a deal. 1 dozen = 2 controllers with 3 full uses. Much more cost effective than a dedicated 360 battery pack.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/01/2008, -4/+13About 15 hours, that controller has been out since November.
- Oronar, on 02/01/2008, -0/+9Yes, all rechargable batteries do eventually hold less of a charge as they age. But the battery memory effect that you speak of only happens with Nickel-cadmium, not Lithium Ion batteries.
- etiennetheman, on 02/01/2008, -0/+9And your mouse is probably covered with semen... While my 360 controllers keeps the hand of my kids clean.
- Memnochxx, on 02/01/2008, -0/+8That's not the issue, the issue is efficiency and therefore money.
- MrMysterious, on 02/01/2008, -3/+11My Wii eats batteries either alkaline or the battery pack recharger thing I have for them.
My PS3 seems to offer more than enough juice for the average gamer.
My 360 rechargeable battery packs last a respectable amount of time but they are easy to change if they die.
The PS3 scares me because once the Li-ion starts to lose it's juice it will be hard to replace the entire control for $$ instead of just the battery pack. - Hellothere123, on 02/01/2008, -1/+9This doesn't happen with lithium ion batteries.
- chedabob, on 02/01/2008, -2/+9The play and charge kit isn't $40...
- chedabob, on 02/01/2008, -0/+7Your mouse also transmits a hell of a lot less data...
- rarson, on 02/02/2008, -1/+8So I could charge a PS3 controller with the same charger I use to charge my RAZR? Cool. Mini-USB charging was a really good idea to implement.
- Memnochxx, on 02/01/2008, -1/+8Well a 360 controller gets 56 hours with AA batteries.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 02/01/2008, -1/+8"your an idiot"
Classic. - shredswithpiks, on 02/01/2008, -0/+7good lord even the microsoft play and charge kit is only $19.99 at best buy...
- JigoroKano, on 02/01/2008, -0/+7It probably has a voltage monitoring circuit. Most lithium-ion batteries in electronics do nowadays.
- cawpin, on 02/01/2008, -0/+6No way. My Wii remotes chew through batteries.
- Ajajadude, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6I charge my girlfriend's phone using my PS3 when she's over. It works like a charm (tho, the PS3 seems to try to connect it as a storage device for some reason).
- MacPh1st0, on 02/01/2008, -2/+8Yeah I have the same thing. I got one of those Energizer 15-minute chargers with a bunch of rechargeable AAs that I use for my 360 controller, Wiimotes and even my toothbrush, and they work just as good if not better than any packaged rechargeable battery pack!
- tendonut, on 02/01/2008, -2/+8I wasn't even able to get to the last boss of Galaxy without swapping out my Duracell batteries...and that was far from 36 hours.
- modix, on 02/01/2008, -0/+6The extension cables for USB work with charging as well. I added a 3 foot USB extension cable to the charging cable. It's altogether 7+ feet with both cables, about the exact length of my old PS2 wired controller. I just play it wired at the same range I played my ps2 when it runs out of batteries. Not the same as having to hunt down brand new batteries.
- hadiz, on 02/01/2008, -5/+11I had a Wii at launch, and maybe I was the exception but found the battery life to be horrendous. I must have gone through 10 or more pairs of batteries in the six months before I sold it.
- fadetoone, on 02/01/2008, -0/+5Actually, I agree. I haven't noticed substantial battery life out of the Wii-motes. For me it seems 10 hours or less.
- kingmanic, on 02/01/2008, -0/+5Power consumption does vary by a lot of factors.
- rarson, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5If you leave batteries in the Wiimote without using it, they will drain. It seems to take about a month or so, but I've popped brand new batteries into a Wiimote, used it for about 10 minutes, and then went back to it a month later or so only to find them dead.
Nintendo recommends not leaving batteries in the controllers, but nobody reads those types of things when they get a new console. Not that I'm blaming anyone, I didn't read it either, but a lot of people apparently have noticed their Wiimotes sucking down battery juice even when not being used. - xdeliriumx, on 02/01/2008, -2/+7@wedges - The Nyko 360 one with 2 battery packs is $12... not nearly $40... fanboy.
- supremesonic, on 02/01/2008, -0/+5I must now test if I can play games for 56 hours and 56 minutes without falling asleep!
- volacide, on 02/01/2008, -1/+6Not so. Sony offers a service to send them in for probably simply shipping and handling.
- Renton, on 02/01/2008, -1/+6The Wii remote uses bluetooth too. Kind of a moot point.
- j0nnyDiGITAL, on 02/01/2008, -2/+7The Wii remote uses Bluetooth technology too. On top of that it also has rumble, and IR, and accelerometers. What's your point again?
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4Batteries are loaded up with valuable materials, and if you look at the trash sorting operation at your local dump, batteries are indeed one of the materials they make sure gets sorted out and recycled almost always.
- Smwbigboss, on 02/01/2008, -4/+8Either
1) you were playing it for 367 hours
2) you were using cheap "Dunacell" batteries
I'm guessing it was option 2. (Come on, nobody sucks that much at Zelda) - Ajajadude, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4I wasn't all that excited about wireless controllers at first, but it's a godsend to not have to worry about someone tripping over you controller cable and pulling your console off the cabinet or have to worry about tangling with other peripherals.
- crashingechelon, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4That's what I use on my Wii remote and I change the batteries about every 2-3 months. I figure if they do good in my digital camera and wireless mice why not that.
- Renton, on 02/01/2008, -1/+5Replace that battery. You probably damaged it somehow while charging it.
