- coltrane68, on 07/22/2008, -10/+153Someone just learned how to make graphs in Excel. Yay! I'm making cones! I'm making cylinders! I'm so talented!
- Rikm, on 07/23/2008, -15/+94In some of the categories PS3 doesn't even have more than 5 games according to Metacritic (platform 4 and RPG 5) which puts the Xbox at an advantage.
Also if you look at RPGs, Xbox gets to count Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and the 2 DLC expansions as separate titles making 3 of the top-5, while PS3 only counts Oblivion, even though on the PS3 you can get the whole package on a single disc
Metacritic's categories are messed up too counting Bioshock, The Orange Box, GoW, Halo 3 and CoD:4 as both 3PS and FPS making the top-5 in both genres for Xbox the same right now (although according to the graphs the scores are different so maybe the top games weren't the same when the data were collected.)
tl;dr
The author spent more time playing with Excel's graph styles than making sure he had good quality data.
***Full disclosure, I have an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and gaming PC so don't give a ***** which platform is "best". - KingDrewsky, on 07/22/2008, -7/+68Good research; horrible presentation. The author sucks at Excel. I'm still digging it b/c it is good info.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -6/+55I know its not on the list, but the Dreamcast excelled in all of those categories.
- doubl3d, on 08/28/2008, -24/+73Exact reason i sold my wii, it is last in the games.
- Endies, on 07/23/2008, -16/+51Finally some solid proof the Wii sucks. It may be selling the most, but in no way is it the gamers console, unless you only like playing five games.
- shutupdangit, on 07/23/2008, -0/+34Right, we should definitely include games that haven't been released yet on a graph based on total cumulative score.
- petebot, on 07/22/2008, -5/+38Really? What RPG does the PS3 have that the 360 doesn't?
- CollapseControl, on 07/22/2008, -21/+45Gotta love all the Metacritic based articles being made. It's hard to argue with numbers, huh?
Let's see... 360 games are in the "lead", everything seems in order, good job. - AndrewDB, on 07/23/2008, -4/+26I was, repeat, was a die hard Nintendo fan... before they started going casual.
I now use my Wii for 2 things. It's virtual console, and smash brothers brawl.
That's it.
It's so sad to see Nintendo going down the drain like this. :( - aDJsavedmylife, on 07/23/2008, -8/+25Way too enthusiastic with the Office 98 style graphs.
using a different graph style for each graph means its difficult to compare them. - Monkiest, on 07/23/2008, -7/+24As much as I detest Microsoft at times, I'm a big advocate of the 360. It's a no-brainer, if your gonna invest several hundred in a console, you may as well put your money on one of the world's most wealthy corporations.
When the RROD problem started occuring, I got a new Xbox within a month, as did most people. Can you imagine if Sony had been hit with a similar problem? I doubt they would have survived such a crisis. It was a drop in the ocean to Microsoft and they will keep on plowing cash into it until it is the market leader. - whoamarcos, on 07/23/2008, -1/+17I sold my wii a year ago after realizing I never used it and decided brawl wasn't worth keeping a wii for (especially after the delay to spring)
Then I got myself a 360 and I've been pleased since - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -2/+17dugg for Dreamcast.
- yellowswan, on 07/23/2008, -3/+18It's true. It also excelled in allowing me to plumb the depths of their rich catalogue for years after they ceased supporting it, for the cheap sum of ~21ยข per game.
- DGRules, on 07/23/2008, -5/+19Strictly speaking, they're all toys.
- chrisfu, on 07/23/2008, -1/+12"The 360 is best because of its insane library of games."
Which is why he takes into account ALL games in a genre on a certain platform, and then the top 5 on that platform. The article isn't ***** at all, and the author has obviously tried his best to even up the playing field before conducting his research.
Speaking as someone who owns all three consoles, it's actually in my interests for all of the consoles to do well and put out grade A releases. All things said, it'd take a stubborn person indeed to disagree with his findings. Nintendo definitely need to work harder at attracting better third party support. - yellowswan, on 07/23/2008, -2/+13Insecure much?
- BattleScars, on 07/23/2008, -3/+14Nobody asked you to trade your PS3 for a 360.
- Shoegaze99, on 07/23/2008, -0/+11"Buried because of complete bias towards the 360."
How can raw numbers pulled from an objective third-party source that compiles said numbers from dozens and dozens of websites be biased? The numbers are what they are. All this piece did was compile them into charts. You may not LIKE what the numbers show, but again, they are what they are. - potamkin, on 07/23/2008, -7/+18What a boring bunch of charts. Everything's pretty much the same!
BORING - DforSpiD, on 07/23/2008, -1/+11Maverick, I'm an RPG fan, and I prefer the Playstation 3 to the Xbox 360 (although I haven't bought either and could yet be swayed) but you're absolutely wrong about the RPGs on 360...
They have a few great exclusive RPGs that PS3 doesn't have, and from what I've seen PS3 has very few good exclusive RPGs...
I still may get a 360 instead of a PS3 because the RPGs are a big selling point for me, FF13 will be on both, and the 360 is cheaper...
Still... none of the systems have really done enough to impress me, because all I care about it the games, and this generation of games seems bland across the board... - zofobread, on 07/23/2008, -1/+11It's an unfair comparison. Anytime PC games are mentioned, you're digging into 2-3 decades worth of gaming catalogue. Most of the the really great PC games have been around for years and years, while these consoles have been out what - 2 years?
There's no point comparing PC games in with a console discussion. - CollapseControl, on 07/22/2008, -5/+15The PC should be in an article based on Consoles? And I gather they are only talking about the new additions to the consoles, if PS2 would be in there, why not add every other console? Sony shouldn't be the only one using 2 consoles to display games.
- jimmick, on 07/23/2008, -4/+13Wii has pretty much no RPGs.
Except Zach and Wiki, but thats hardly FF material - Abomonog, on 07/23/2008, -13/+22Another example of why the PC rules. Had it been in the list it would have been the winner of all categories. The PC has had more FPS games released for it alone than the entire library of any console on that list. Start tacking on the browser games and all the little free games that get released and you get a list larger than all the consoles combined.
Console are good platforms, yes. I am not knocking them. But when compared to a PC they are rather limited.
The PC is also the place where new technologies are developed. Then that technology gets placed into the latest console. - philhatesyou, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10From a business perspective, certainly. However, as a gamer, I would say Nintendo has ***** up royally, and I'd like to see them feel some pain for it. I don't view pandering to the lowest common denominator to be a good thing.
- tattertech, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10Market Caps-
Microsoft: 240.28B
Sony: 41.64B - theonlyjoker, on 07/23/2008, -2/+11I have this feeling that you have been sucking to much of the Sony corporate *****?
- PhantomRogue, on 07/23/2008, -18/+26I think these kind of "reports" are *****. The only way you can compare platform reviews is to look at games that come out on all three. PS3 will always have the best first party games, XBox has really solid third party software, and the Wii will always only have quality first party games.
The reason the 360 is the best, is the best 5 of the 360 are all VERY good games (due to sheer numbers). Where the best 5 on the PS3... maybe only 3 can be termed "best", the same goes for the Wii.
The 360 is best because of its insane library of games. The Wii is still a toy. And the PS3 is still trying to find its home. (Har, pun not intended, but left it in there). - coyote1284, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8It exists in a parallel dimension where Sega makes consoles, instead of Microsoft. Theorists refer to this dimension as "The 90s", where George W. Bush is not Emperor of Americanna, not even a political figure, and Iraq is a peaceful nation lead by the benevelent Saddam Hussein.
- ShoesChrist, on 07/23/2008, -6/+14Well this won't start a fanboy flamewar at all...
- Monkiest, on 07/23/2008, -2/+9I think you'll find that some are significantly wealthier than others though.
Sony was having a really rough time prior to the PS3's release. - austria, on 07/23/2008, -5/+12Damn I bought a Wii, had fun playing it all last weekend and now I find out it sucks...
- atgmac, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8[citation needed]
- Kral, on 07/23/2008, -2/+9As a Wii owner, I'm sorry, but the reviewers are right. The games are ***** that wouldn't pass as shareware on the PC a decade ago.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -1/+7why does he gotta use a different presentation for each case its so annoying, they're the same data after all.
- JakeyG14, on 07/23/2008, -2/+8As did the PS2 and the SNES (well bar FPS's probably).
- DforSpiD, on 07/23/2008, -6/+12While the average game for the PS3 might be better, who wants to play a game that is average?
Unless the average game for the PS3 is completely amazing then the fact that it has less terrible games doesn't mean it will be more enjoyable.
I'll buy a system when it has enough games that are absolutely brilliant and will be worth my time and money...
Average games aren't worth my time... - dperren, on 07/23/2008, -5/+10A difference of a couple of percent in a set of entirely subjective reviews? Yeah, it's *clearly* a good idea to base your console purchase on this!
- awtripp, on 07/23/2008, -3/+8No it didn't need to be said, especially like that, at least state your reasoning. I'm a huge fan of PC gaming, but I'm also a huge fan of console gaming. WHAAAATT?! Yes, it is possible to enjoy both. I enjoy FPS, Strategy and Action/RPG type games on PC and I enjoy everything that is good on a console with the caveat that I find it less enjoyable to play an FPS on a console. Sports games are especially more fun on a console though and some games you just can't get on PC (Final Fantasy being one example). Also, I like playing board games, too, like cribbage or trivial pursuit. I know, weird, right?
- Coffeedemon, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Go to GameFaqs and GameRankings and start aggregating the user reviews.
The average gamer is going to be more biased than the average reviewer. Look at all the hyperbole we find every day here. Everyone is so caught up in defending their investment that they can't think straight. As if you need to jump to the defense of a corporation to prove your own self worth and skill as a purchaser of stuff. - nicko68, on 07/23/2008, -2/+7The Wii's numbers are going to be dragged down because it has a LOT of shovelware. It's easy to develop for, it's the best selling console this generation, so they're getting a lot of rushed crap or cheap PS2 ports.
Who cares what the average score across all games is? The more important thing is does your console have enough titles that you enjoy playing? I'm the type who would rather have a smaller number of good games that I keep going back to than boxes full of games that have no replay value.
And yeah... look at me, I can make all kinds of graphs. I am so leet! - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5I had a nintendo wii at launch to i enjoyed wii sports, but most of the games afterwords were not that great. Most just seemed rushed and i got tired of flipping my wrists around to play. I couldn't find a decent fps , red steel wasnt that great . I still haven't played many decent games for it, although i recently tried mario cart and it really brought back memories. I might get a nintendo wii again once the home brew scene really kicks in.
- sandiegodude, on 07/23/2008, -1/+6Rockstar promised exclusive GTA IV content on Xbox 360, so that is what won me over originally... That and my damned roommate at the time going ***** wild over Halo after playing it one time at another friend's house. Soooo glad I didn't buy a Wii though!
Oh yea, somebody said something about Xbox for single player, Wii for multiplayer. You ever heard of Rock Band? It's a Friday night staple for our "lets get drunk and rock the ***** out!" parties. My songlist is at 178 and still growing weekly, and I've yet to meet a person who hasn't been interested in at least ONE song in the game, let alone a whole slew of great music to play the plastic instruments to.
(and before somebody points out Wii has Rock Band as well, I know... but they have no DLC, so they're stuck with the original songlist) - BlackWaterOp, on 07/23/2008, -4/+9LOL, PS3's online cannot touch Xbox Live. I have both and cannot stand trying to play Cod4 or Rock Band on PSN. What a joke.
- powerbenny, on 07/23/2008, -2/+6Mario Kart absolutely rules. The most fun you can have waving a steering wheel around in the air.
- pathrw, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4Wouldn't the have to be a PS3/Wii fanboy? The 360 got the best scores.
- Carrot1991, on 07/23/2008, -3/+7Bollocks, what 360 platformers are we talking about here?
- o0joshua0o, on 07/23/2008, -5/+9I agree the Wii has tons of shovelware (probably because it's the cheapest to develop for), but it's still worth owning for the games that aren't shovelware. I also think the Wii MotionPlus holds great potential.
