- TheWilder, on 01/07/2009, -1/+38GameStop has been ripping people off for too long. I'm glad services like Goozex is trying to provide good alternatives.
- Haoie, on 01/07/2009, -3/+39Why sell old games? You know you'll end up just regretting it years down the track.
- cloudberries, on 01/08/2009, -0/+36Everyone wants to make everything illegal. It's the way of the world these days.
- DiggityDugged, on 01/08/2009, -0/+22I will Digg anything related to showing the world how evil and useless Gamestop is.
- Ne007, on 01/08/2009, -0/+18You know that the video game industry wants to make this illegal right?
- gilbes, on 01/08/2009, -2/+16Wait one second. Video games today are expensive? Super Mario Bros 3 retailed around $50 new. In todays dollars that is over $67. Yet new games, which cost way more to produce, cost $60.
Seems to me that the market has not only kept games at a reasonable price, but they are cheaper today than they were back in the NES days. - ShadowDreaming, on 01/08/2009, -1/+14Gamestop basically steals your money with the amount of profits they make from your game..
- ZackAttack007, on 01/07/2009, -0/+10Warning: Goozex is not for the impatient!
That said, it can save you a LOT of money if you don't mind waiting a month or two to get the hot new releases. - Equinox1, on 01/08/2009, -1/+11***** GameStop. The employees are always cranky, miserable and begging for dear life for me to reserve a game. And no, I'm not selling you my games either, ***** off.
- jnm224, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9CAG is a great site.. I've found out about countless deals because of the forums.
- freshyill, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9I know $60 seems steep for games these days, but I recall Secret of Mana costing something like $72.99 in 1993. Final Fantasy III was close to that too. And unlike today's games, they were worth every penny.
/crotchety - Renton, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9If you're planning on buying a used PC game, you might as well just pirate it. No DRM and the developers get the same amount of money. Then again, everybody uses Steam now, so selling your old games is pretty much out of the picture.
- EagleRufio, on 01/08/2009, -6/+13BURIED for mentioning Gamestop, which is stealing billions of dollars from developers and game designers every year. Maybe if companies received this extra money they'd be more willing to take risks and quit producing crappy shovelware sequels all the time.
Not only that, but it's a total rip off. Quit taking your games there. - smaisch, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8Ah, so that's what's causing these automotive bailouts! People selling their used cars to other people and used car lots!
Get over it, that argument, while may be true, is also bunk, because once you own the property, you're free to sell it to anyone. The third-party sales system has been in place for a long time, and isn't going anywhere. Developers need to understand this. Besides, piracy does a lot more damage.
Finally, if developers really want to start making more money, they need to offer more demos for their games. I'm aware the console market receives SOME demos of games, but PC demos are virtually non-existent these days. - smaisch, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7Whoever this "CheapyD" guy is, I also agree with him! ;)
(it's a shame that Forbes didn't offer a direct link to your site) - atGmailDotCom, on 01/07/2009, -1/+7I will always regret selling Paper Mario and Mario Kart for N64, two of my favorite games I thought I wouldn't play again. And Gamestop went and sold it for twice what they paid me ***** THEM!
- Browzer, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6They are already taking steps to dissuade people from getting used games. For example, a new copy of Gears of War 2 comes with a coupon to download a bunch of free levels. The used version does not include this coupon. I got a new copy and was able to download the levels; my friend got a used copy and could not.
- miriv365, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6How exactly does Gamestop steal money from developers and game designers each year? I am not defending them, they do rip off people who sell them games, but I don't get how they are hurting the publishers of the games. The games have already been purchased by at least one consumer...are you suggesting that every time a game is resold/repurchased, that the developer should get that money?
- CheapyD, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6I agree! ;)
- SteelAuger, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5I've heard Alamogordo, New Mexico is a good place to ditch unwanted games, literally.
- Renton, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Believe it or not, people other than you play video games.
- foomojive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Goozex is the greatest thing ever. I've been trading on goozex for i think over a year now. It takes time sometimes to find high demand and/or low supply games but other than that it rules with an iron fist. And no, I don't work for or get any money for talking up goozex.
1. you can trade over and over. At gamestop you only get half the price they can sell the game for. I've even traded in a few great games for 99 cents (wish I hadn't). At goozex the price is determined by an algorhythm that factors in demand, supply, newness. So as long as the price doesn't go down while you own the game, you can trade it back in and only be out a couple bucks in shipping and a $1 trading fee. I'm still going on my original 1500 or so points when i started out. Give that a try at gamestop.
2. goozex does all the hard work for you. With other game trading sites you have to find a person that wants the game you have and you want the game they have. That's much harder than just finding a game you want that's available. On goozex you trade in a game for points and use those points to buy games. This takes the focus off of trusting the trader and finding the right trader. And with the points system you don't have to haggle. A feedback system and a requirement for feedback before receiving games for new traders lets you trust that the game will show up. They're great on conflict resolution too.
I know this sounds like an ad or something. It's not of course... goozex is just so awesome that I have to tell people about it. Plus the more games you guys trade in, the more are available. :) - bytor4232, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Ah, Funcoland! I used to manage a Funcoland store! Best place on earth, gamestop doesn't come close to what they used to offer in buyback, and what they used to offer in trade.
Not only that, but Funcoland only employed gamers, people who actually played the games they were peddling. In fact, it was in the job description to actually play the games in store when customer load was low. I was originally hired because they lost their "Sega Guy" and I was big time into the Genesis and Saturn back in the day. - ShyGuy91284, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5I miss Funcoland before they were bought out by Gamestop. They would probably still be selling used games for many platforms that Gamestop has dropped since they can't sell them for much anymore.
- ChaosProfessor, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4I use Goozex it ain't too bad.
100 Free Points with New Membership and First Positive Trade when using Coupon Code "dealz-2008". This is a $6 Savings ($1 Trade Credit + 100 Points ($5)) and a great deal. Not Spamming just letting you know about a great deal that i used, also I just picked up the 15 dollar Quantum of Solace at Best Buy put it on there i got 1000 points basically 50 bucks. - jayvisaria, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Used video game trades rock on Craigslist in Columbus, OH - you might want to try it out in your town. i've heard Cragislist works well only in midsized urban areas
Newegg, Buy and Amazon also have awesome deals. CC and BestBuy have some great deals too once in a while. I got Far Cry 2 for the 360 for less than 40 bucks on Black Friday from BBY. - bytor4232, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4No kidding. I stopped playing games with FFVII, when it became less about game play, and more about graphics.
I still play a lot of the old school RPGs. Nothing plays like Dragon Force for the Saturn. - iignotus, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5Actually, the retail games themselves cost much less to produce. Blank CD and DVD media is infinitely cheaper than ROM cartridges from your Super Mario Bros 3 analogy.
- rft3rd, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4People! If you blindly sold your game to gamestop without looking at the shelves to see what they are selling your used title for you have not right to get pissed off. If you did see it and still sold it then you are stupid. No one makes you sell your game to them. Put it on craigslist or ebay or the local paper to make a bit more money. THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES!
Same thing with those that say Best Buy is a rip off. Well no *****! Go to newegg and save 25-50%! Don't want to overpay for gas at the Texaco? Go to ... you get the point.
In a capitalistic society, you have the power of choice. So stfu and make one. - MikeEric, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Ok, so in defense of Gamestop (I can feel the down-digging coming) they do gouge you with their purchase/sale margins, but they do it because they can, and here's why...
They are providing a convenience for people who might be too lazy to mess with e-bay and goozex and craigslist, or for those who might not be net-savvy enough to hold an e-bay auction, those who are a bit too wary of online sales and possible back-alley craigslist dealings, or just the people who don't know there are alternatives available.
They provide a secure, easy, reliable method of getting some scratch for your old games, and if it leaves you with a sore ass, then you shouldn't be complaining. I equate it to paying someone to change your oil instead of doing it yourself. (I know the margins aren't nearly as bad, but please forgive the bad analogy, it's still a bit early, and I haven't had any coffee yet.)
That being said, I never go to Gamestop, but maybe when money is a bit less of an issue than time (searching for deals on new games and trying to sell mine for the most I can get) I may take advantage of their convenience.
</soapbox> - Wawin, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4I agree with you miriv. By eagle's logic it should be ilegal to sell second hand books, used cars, used furniture, used cd's. Damn those yard sales to hell!
- BambinosKrib, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4Who pays £45 for 1 game?
Wait a while and you can get nearly all of them for £20-25 - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Honestly, Screw Gamestop.
- daeus, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Not you
- redeyejay, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3I think I paid about $80 for Final Fantasy III at Toys R Us when it first came out.
- dragonrebornn, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3I stopped trading games in to GameStop years ago... such a rip off. When you are young and don't have easy access to Amazon.com and other accounts GameStop seems like an alright choice. I usually just keep all of the games that I buy now because a year or two from when I play them I want to play again. Sucks to find out that I have traded or sold the game.
- foomojive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3If I remember right Street Fighter II for SNES was $80 when it came out. Worth it though! I stayed up all night playing that when it came out. Even got into a fist fight with my brother once over cheap tactics.
- slimjim5811, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Oh really, I never knew that there are stores who will offer me a ridiculously low dollar amount for my old video games. And please tell me more about this Ebay internet website. Is this new as well?
- cloudberries, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3I've always thought of them (or, a similar company in the UK, Console Exchange) as just a middle-man taking the place of eBay, but with a much higher profit margin.
I can probably get twice the amount for any given game through eBay than I could through one of those stores. - FlimBlimmer, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Buried for repulsive exaggeration.
- secretmoney, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2GameStop. I work for them but I'll be honest we'll rip you off.
- zerochaos56, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Craigslist, post online ad but meet and sell in person. Accept only cash tho.
- psibladeZX, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2If you bothered to read the article... they condemn gamestop for ripping people off... what a moron
- ASSHO, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3Gamefly. Just rent games and return them. I've played about 20 games this past year for the cost of 3 brand new ones.
- frepnog, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2you have to remember tho, those damn cartridges were costing upwards of 15-20 bucks just to produce, while cd's and dvd's cost practically NOTHING to produce.
/they never passed the savings on to us, however. - NicoNicoNico, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2They tend to not sell used PC game. It sucks, but it's true.
- sm4k, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2I use goozex, and yes you do need to be patient for the new games. Where the service really shines though is when you want to go back and play and older title again, or one you missed. Even some more elusive 'under the radar' games like Ico and Beyond Good and Evil are much easier to get through that service than through other outlets (save Ebay, but they're usually pricey there), since the service is by and large hardcore gamers. There's even a few mom and pop gamestores that participate on the site, so you will occasionally get a game that is still in the factory wrapping (I've received 1 like that and I've only received 11 games total).
It does take a week or two to get really rolling, but in that time frame, you wind up sending off a lot of your games, and earning quite a few points. Once one of your 'wish list' games becomes available, you've got those points earned and ready to be spent on whatever you wish.
It's a nice system, and I hope it grows.
I'm just anxious to get my games out of storage so I can start trading again. - kinseyincanada, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2yea no, the cost of actually develoing a game can run tens of millions now, its not just simply buring it to a dvd now.
- flyguyjm, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2What do you think the development costs and time were for mario brothers compared to gears of war or crysis etc? Cheaper media paired with longer and more expensive development costs have probably caused the price to stay roughly the same.
- Treshnell, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2I just found out about Goozex last night, looks awesome so far....though I'll have to be patient to get the games I'd like...
