- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3only a few have poor craftmanship but nothing a good old sander and some formica can fix, too each their own the webmaster of this site is a jerk.
- Pxtl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With a little luck, we've cost him more in hosting fees than it would take to build himself a mame cabinet that we could mock.
- nyar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think his CP might be one of the worst. It looks like he fed his dog a box of crayolas and had it go to town. What an ass.
- kyol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Apparently maddox is some guy on the internet who has a trademark or a patent or something out on frothy teardowns or something because if someone else vaguely sorta sounds like him it's all OMG HE'S RIPPING OFF MADDOX L4ME. I'm assuming his lawyers are involved at some point.
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has put me right off making my own MAME cabinet.
- hellbus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Who is Maddox?
- EdwinBubble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Curse words are just words, people give them too much power. " - Natch, but using them to spice up a lameass "joke" is a sure sign of an amateur. You can make most people blurt out a "ha" by using "*****'" as an adjective. Doesn't make it clever.
- Craig1394, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hillarious comentary? The guy's a prick. There were a couple cabinets in there that looked good. I suppose this guy owns a factory where he can make all the professional cabinets he wants, right? The criticism of the one with the marble contact paper is way off base because most arcade cabinets I saw in my days are just laminated plywood or particle board. Just be glad that the dude didn't use something like paisly paper!
- bryantee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was expecting something funny, but this guy is just a dick. There really was nothing wrong with these MAME arcade machines. He just likes being pissed, like the Chris Rock of technology.
- tanxadillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excessive curse words is not comedy.
- punXzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i thought some of these cabinets weren’t that bad..... ohh well i guess the box i build will sux ass aswell
- volz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure why he spent all this time 'writing' about these MAME cabinets. It would be
far more hilarious to simply display the images. His musings remind me of when I learned
the word '*****', but neglected to learn it's meaning for another week. - DownloadThis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn. this completely scared me off building my own cabinet.
- ltrpmac2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guy is trying way to hard to be like Maddox, especially with cool things like those. No digg, the boxes were cool, the commentary wasn't. Lame.
- Nyghtewynd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The closest Junior here has come to building a cabinet is...well...these pictures.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I liked the marble cabinent. Not the buttons on it, but the fake marble looked good.
The rest of the pictures were pretty hilarious.
The commentary was uniformly stupid.
No digg for lame commentary and a moron who can't make a website to save his life. - Advenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't see how he can talk about console lovers, when he himself has an Xbox live account at the root of his page.
- iamsjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This has GOT to be the funniest site I have ever seen!!! An absolute digg from me!
- crucial, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There's a time and a place fOr that kInd of Comedy and this was definately the place.
- Pxtl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also thought he was harsh on #14. Not all of us want a giant cabinet in plain site all the time.
- kyol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See, the beauty of mame is, as dominowrecker just said, that you really don't need 42 buttons, even on a 4P mamecab from hell. I think the most buttons the average modern-era game uses per player is 6 or 7 per. (and 7 is, IIRC, pushing it unless if you like SNK _and_ Capcom fighters. A row of 4 ala Neo Geo below a row of 3) 4P like Gauntlet are typically only 3 per player, so technically 18-20 for a 4P cab that can also play Street Fighter. Ok, add in a Credit+ Button and, to be generous, start buttons for everyone. We're up to 25. Voila! Get a good keyboard interface from ultimarc, and you can dispense with the credit button entirely. Add in a trackball if you have the space, and you get up to 27 if you want dedicated left/right clicks. The only remaining understandable buttons would be a return code for entering the game and an esc for getting out. Anything else you really shouldn't be doing so often that you have dedicated CP buttons for them. How often do you honestly hit tab and adjust the settings in there? Often enough to warrant a button on top of the CP for? It's be nice if people realized that you can stick tiny little momentary switches inside your CP or behind the coin door for a lot of those auxiliary functions.
And unless if you have a huge 4P simpsons style cab (with huge monitor to go with it), what I posted above would _already_ be crowded as hell on the average control panel. A lot of times people buy without doing research. It's OK if you like pac-man, hell, who doesn't, but I don't know of many (any?) 2p simultaneous 4-way requiring games, so buying 2 dedicated 4 way sticks is silly. And this site helps point out common errors people make like that. i.e. the typical star wars yoke: You know how many games that's useful for? Less than a dozen. So why put it on a CP with everything _else_ on it?
Besides, isn't snark supposed to be doubleplusgood for all the kids these days? - Malis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you take it for what is is.. extreme humor... you''l have milk blowing out your nose in no time at all... and for those who are gonna comment about "Well hes just ripping on other peoples projects" his own is in there.. and he rips on its faults as well...
- MisterPoPo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What an *****. I'm betting hard cash this guy wouldn't put up a pic of his own cabinet if he had one. No digg.
- epthegeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What an *****. I'm betting hard cash this guy wouldn't put up a pic of his own cabinet if he had one. No digg."
How not to read the comments and look silly.
The author's machine is # 18. - dhakbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Coral is such horrible garbage.
The mirrors are no more available than the original page 90% of the time. - epthegeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fyi, coral cache of it is still up, sometimes ...
http://www.disorder.org.nyud.net:8090/crapmame/ - cneil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm getting a bunch of 403 errors.
- epthegeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+02 gigs of bandwidth a month ... and digg burned it up in one day! tee hee
- emocean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This guy tries to hard.
:: - -neon-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehehe, now I can't resist... hehehe
*too*
:P - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally got through them all. The author (epthegeek?) did a great job, really funny comments. great stuff... and I don't know who the ***** maddox is either.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0403'dz0rs
- Noize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they blocked the site.... :( anyone snag a mirror?
- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree kyol
Its also worth pointing out that lots of people who make cabs only focus on the technical (what buttons will be need to play every possible configuration, what interface to use, what OS and emulator, wiring etc) They think that once they slap a monitor and some controls together with a computer they are good to go. The thing is, these things ARE huge. You have to look at them in your house all the time. Bottom line is if you have no sense of style and craftsmanship you shouldnt even try to make a cab. If we take away the "geek" factor. And just talk about the reality that they are making large furniture for their house. I think then you can see why maybe some of these guys should have bought a pre-made arcade cabinets.
Of course to each their own. But I do think this site will help new people get educated on what NOT to do. And in the long run if they will be happier with their cab's. So to me even though this site is humorous (well to some) it really does help people fix common mistakes when making a cab.
I have a friend who built a cab without worrying about cosmetics, and after looking at it for a few months he decided to get rid of it. Had he made a cab that looked clean and professional, he would most likey still have and enjoy his cab. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does he not complain about everything? the pinball one was pretty damn nifty, as were plenty of them, he doesnt know what the hell games people are playing, how should he know how many buttons they need for what could be a very, very wide variety?
overall i don't even see the point of critisizing someone elses handiwork, if they did it themselves and they can have fun with it, more power to them. - imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First person to correct the last post is an ANAL ***** DORK, so don't do it! This person is getting DAMN TIRED of all the grammar police around hair.
- Zeusandhera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought many of those were pretty cool looking, sure some are kinda bad, or poorly made, but the ideas and work put into them is pretty cool. Also, he doesn't seem to consider that people might have a budget or something, not everyone can get a huge monitor just for the heck of it. He probably would hate the one I built for several reasons, I used an X-Arcade stick, I painted characters and levels from the games, and my joystick and keyboard roll out on drawer hinges.
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to post a montly 'mame cabinet of the month' to rec.games.video.arcade.collecting ... seemed to have especially made some twins mad who had coverted a very nice Star Wars upright into a MAME'd monstrocity.
- mrkuhn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet! My cabinet is in on that site :). Uh...
I found it very funny and why all the complaing about the website. It was a good simple page and does what it was meant to. - "terrya64"
It was meant to look like it was from 1992 ? :D. - terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found it very funny and why all the complaing about the website. It was a good simple page and does what it was meant to.
- gilligan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In an age of correctness, Its about time we read something like this : "It's like, spilled white paint ***** on black. ***** looking, almost." or The classy white rectangle backgrounds on some of them really complete the effect of total hideousness.". Now I must agree and for what its worth, and regardless of merit. It has been dugg. ***** I dugg worse.
- noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hey, look at me! I sound just like Maddox!
FFS, if you're gonna try and be funny, at least do it on your own merit, instead of cloning someone else. Hell, Maddox isn't even especially funny IMO. He could at least have copied from someone funny.
Lame. No digg. - jadenguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he DID build one. and said it sucked. he later fixed it. personally, a LOT of his critiques between random insults were REALLY GOOD. in fact, i learned a lot about what not to do when building a cabinate, a project i will deeply immerse myself with this summer. i'm glad to know more about layout and stuff. like put the trackball in flush.
- kyol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Y'all HTML wizards and intertron gurus sure are knocking a guy for light simple page design that doesn't have FLASH and JAVA and COBOL oh my. Sheesh. It has pictures, it has text, it has navigation buttons, what the hell are you dorks complaining about?
And for the content, you gotta understand, these are supposed to be arcade machines. How many arcade machines do you know have PVC piping as a major component in their control panel design? How many (real, not butchered by the local arcade) arcade machines have marble contact paper all over 'em? How many full size stand up arcade machines use 12" or TV screens? Yeah, it's great if you made your own machine and we're all proud of you for competing, but in a lot of cases they're butchering up some good old cabinet for some hideous riced-out monstrosity. - ytsebadd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always looked to these type cabs as what not to do when building my Mame cabinet. Glad to see that someone else laughs at them too.
- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah I have to agree with a lot of what he said. People tend to try and make their cabinets do everything.
Bottom line is once you start over doing it, it no longer looks like an arcade machine. Hence there is no point in making it in the first place. I mean honestly...all those people that used marble textures? when they hell did you ever see a real arcade game that looked like that?!
But by far the worst, is the button config's people used. More is not better. Its like some of them are trying to make a keyboard out of happs buttons. My cab uses 6 buttons for each side in a classic street fighter pattern, and 4 more buttons in the middle for trackball/and 1 and 2 player. I dont think there has been a game yet that I have not been able to play with that button layout. (not including games that needed custom controls like Tron, and Ikari Warriors)
And lastly...even if my cabinet made it on this guys site...I would think its funny. If people dont want their ***** to be criticized, then dont put it on the internet!
+Digg - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think this couldve had SOOOO much potential with some good comentary i mean dont get me wrong some of those comments were awesome but swearing just cause is dumb swear when you NEED too not whenever....
- polymangler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Love the Simpson's figurines in the authors own monstrosity pics
- qishi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone with a site looking like this guy's doesn't have any business making fun of how other things look. Good pics, as long as you can ignore the commentary. Oh, and I think EdwinBubble said it well.
- Don_Gero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF is with the 403 error? Does anybody have a working link?
