So you can get that extra 20ms of lag of course! - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Isn't attention whoring what Digg is all about?
But, seriously though, I was just using the original headline.
After watching the whole video, I would say I'm a little less impressed. Some of the footage looks awesome and undistinguishable from real, but other parts look kinda silly - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -11/+35All I can say is WOW. I mean, maybe some of the games shown for the PS3 during E3 were so-so, but perhaps this is a better illustration of what it can actually do
- MichaelW2, on 10/12/2007, -15/+37connect to the net wirelessly?
WOW THATS SO AMAZING!! - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23i dont mean to be a debbie downer or anything but yes i agree the lip syncing was so so and yes it looks good but how much will it be scaled back if you have to draw the entire game like that and add that much detail to everyone plus with the ai and trying to go with a steady 30 to 60 frames a second would be very hard. so untill the game is not just real time but like actual game play then ill buy it
We should learn our lesson from the killzone 2 trailer
but woah with the music and her starting to cry and using swear words really helps.. not sarcastic - furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -19/+38what to be excited about? its coming out on the xbox 360!
that means you can play this game for $200 less! - drgori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"Whoever worked on the facial animations really, really sucks."
I don't know. My ex-girlfriend had those same dead eyes. - 4040, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Right, because the PS3 can synthesize reality.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -13/+28"they released this %u201Ccasting%u201D video of Heavy Rain running on PS3 at real-time"
So does that mean it was rendered in 3D real time, or just played back in real time?
Btw, the voice went out of sync a lot, and the movements looked rushed and imperfect. It's also supposed to be on PC/X360 so that whole "What the PS3 can really do" title is just another attention whoring headline. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Here's another mirror, just in case:
http://www.bandwidthorbust.com/mirror/HEAVYRAIN_THECASTING_AVI.zip - dobesov, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Something people really need to realize... and i thought we had learned this lesson a long time ago:
The GPU is more important than the CPU for these operations. All of the graphics rendered in these games rely on the video card in the unit. Without the video card the cell and the xenon dont do diddly squat. In fact the CPU in these systems in a rather negligable point. Pop in an athlon or p4 and you can acheive the same level of graphics with a good video card.
The Xbox graphics card is theoretically better than the ps3 card. At worst they are on par with each other. Remember that the ps3 is not new, it is delayed. The longer it takes to come out the more dated its technology becomes. The gaming hardware in it comes from the same design period as the 360.
The cell architecture is, however terrible for doing what a CPU needs to do for games...
Expect to see many good demos on the ps3 and games that cannot live up to the demo quality. The problem with the cell is that games and any dynamic program in the most basic nature are complex sets of comparisons, if statements and mixtures of math. having 7 awsome streaming vector units does not help with that. The cell should be fantastic at pushing through complex math really fast, but thats not the essence of games. games are about casue and effect, not formula translation. Cell is a great streaming video decoder platform.
The xbox xenon on the other hand is a 3 general core CPU. each core can do all the great general purpose instruction, all the combinations of integer and float and comparisons that games push through to figure out whats going on. And then each core has a vector unit which you can essentially compare to the SPE on the cell.
So, the cell has 1 weak general purpose core, mostly used as a router to the 7 SPEs.
Xenon has 3 stronger general purpose cores used for game code and 3 SPEs for that fast 3D math.
Keep in mind that the point of the video card is to do all the things a CPU does poorly, to offload all the hard 3d work. So wait? what does the Cell have that is the balance to the GPU? What function does Cell pick up the slack on if it doesnt act like a general purpose CPU?
Now maybe people will simply learn to reinvent programing to fit the Cell architecture, to find a great way to make games that doesnt involve decision making and acts more like a long unchaning stream of complex equations. But then again... everytime i use the word streaming... for some reason i think of sewer shark. - nathanchase, on 05/06/2009, -0/+12It seems a lot of commenters are experiencing the "uncanny valley".

- RenZ87, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Actually Nintendo was more powerful. Go to the tech spec section.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_GameCube - hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20The voice acting in this was so amazing. The sound and the way the character moved around was so convincing. I forgot I was watching a demo for a long while there.
As previously stated, the facial expressions need a little work, but the graphics were great, though MGS4 looks far better. I really liked this, it was something different from other demos.
Great digg! - patmfitz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15"Why exactly would you need to connect to the net wirelessly on a console that needs to be plugged in?"

This just in: Ken Kutaragi is a misinformation spreading troll. - KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Isn't it possible that a game could come out with better graphics on one console than it has on another?
- Eywanadi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14This would be impressive if it showed more than just one wall of a kitchen. I would not be surprised at all if the Wii could render that scene in real-time because it is only a fraction of a single room. Now if the video was of a whole house that looked like that rendered in real time then I would have been impressed.
With that said, dear god they need a good animator at that studio. Whoever worked on the facial animations really, really sucks. Go watch any CG movie and you will see far better facial animations and there is no reason why facial animations can not look that good in current generation video games. It is artistic talent not technical limitations that is holding that character back from looking realistic. - Dari, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24Buy the HD attachment and the wireless adapter, you have a 600 dollar Xbox 360 with a smaller hard drive than PS3. Sorry, argument null and void. :)
- obscurelyfamous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8As a tech demo, it worked. But I found the actual content of the demo to be quite fascinating. I really wanted to keep watching her performance -- it was that intense!

But when the character is doing something unexpected and the engine has to keep active to stay with the player it can be very taxing... if it has scripted events like that shure it will look better but if everything looks that good (which im hoping) then it will be much more taxing on the ps3, xbox 360 or whatever your playing it on, like when you play a cutscene to a really cpu hungry game shure it runs fine but when your changing variables and such it makes it more difficult - LxMx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@ condorhauck
The Cell processor's PPE (the main processor) is based on the Power 970 architecture (much like the Xbox 360's CPU). So it won't be entirely foreign to developers.
Anyway, I don't care, I'm going to Wii. - Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Graphics sells games, playability keeps you playing, which is the point.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8From the guys who made Indigo Prophecy, I expect big things.
Indigo Prophecy was amazing. - Ray301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7She looks like a psychotic hybrid of G4TV's Morgan Webb slapped on with Julia Robert's teeth :)
- Ollin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Another PS3 thread and another flaming thread......"TOO MUCH MONEY" " NO VALUE.............." "I'M NOT PAYING 800 DOLLARS OMG". Come on guys just watch the video and just comment on it......I'm sure people have had enough of this fanboy wars :(. I think most people don't really care what you spend your money on so lets leave prices outta something that doesn't have to do with the price of the PS3.

- yagoogaly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I can't say i wasn't impressed, but i certainly wasn't blown away. Sure the graphics look good, but not nearly as good as the article cracked them up to be. Plus, as was mentioned before, its not worth the price tag. To those of you arguing that its because of blue-ray, i personally don't see that as a valid argument, the world isn't ready for blue-ray or HD DVD.
- dgritsko, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16@ mordred:
correction - you mean watch blu-ray movies. the xbox 360 will play hd dvd's with the add-on drive microsoft is releasing this holiday. still $100 cheaper than a ps3... - DeadlyCouncil, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9mmkAY... not impressed...
Apparently all the Cell is good for is making women look like horses. - condorhauck, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13"ps3: single 3.2 ghz processor
xbox360: three 3.2ghz processors
(not to mention the graphics card and memory)"
Ok... I am somewhat of a 360 fanboy and even I have to acknowledge that this statement is not correct. The PS3 has the much hyped cell processor from IBM which is a 9 core chip. The 360 has a single processor as well but it is only a 3 core chip.
The big difference is that developers have been developing for IBM's Power PC chips (like in the 360) for a long time. Apple has been using them for more years than I care to know about. The Cell is a brand new chip that has no history at all. So much is unknown about it, for example can anyone fully utilize all nine cores. Dual core chips are common in PC's right now, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a game that fully utilizes those.
With that in mind, it is also worthy of note to mention that PC Dual Core chips are CISC, whereas PPC chips are RISC. What this translates to in laymans terms is that the PPC chips do less but generally do it much better. Apple made their mark on the world as a graphics system, games just never really caught on for that market.
What it really all comes down to is the fact that until the PS3 is in action and people are playing it live and in person we will not truly know which system is superior. However for now I will continue to enjoy my 360 and acknowledge that I can't (won't) afford the PS3. - heinousjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm not too sure about equal importance, there. You'll have a hard time finding anyone that will play a game that's boring, but plenty of people are happy playing fun games with graphics that were state of the art back in 1992. I think that's about as objective a way of deciding the answer as can be had.
- Destinatus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I don't know why everyone has to be aggressively for one console or another, some people need to chill out and realize they are just games. I liked the Indigo Prophecy and this looks like it has some potential, I hope my PC will be able to handle it.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is a heated conversation me and my friends get into, is it really all about the graphics (as my SLI friends will tell you) or is it about the game play and multiplayer that really makes a game?
- RubberbandLN6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Absolutely agreed. I can't really see the game concept behind this but I think this maybe the perfect showpiece for the PS3.
This shows that not necessarily only the PS3 but the next-generation of systems have the ability to show real, true emotion in the form of a game. Since it's from the guys that made Indigo Prophecy, arguably one of the best stories in a game, the future is definitely exciting. - merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Indigo Prophecy = most underrated game of last year.
- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5agreed, story blowed hardcore near the end, but the gameplay was interesting and it was somewhat emotionally invlolving, though i kinda got freaked out by the interactive sex scene with a man who was technically dead, the chick even said he felt like a dead body, gross....
- Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5' ' '

i think his point was more if you have 20 people in a large outdoor enviroment, with extra physics, ai and game logic running, then would the graphics have to be scaled down - rishdeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The actress -> http://comoedia.fr/afficheActeur/7008 - she does look pretty damn similiar to the video model.
Still not impressed with the facial animation as much. The body language was pretty much spot on, but the lipsyncing was crisp enough and there was hardly any movement in her cheeks and forehead which is whats needed for facial expressions to look convincing. - 4040, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's both. If the gameplay's great, yet the graphics are lacking, it takes away from the experience. If the graphics are great, yet the gameplay's lacking, obviously you won't have a good time with the game.
Both are equally important. - wtf00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well like someone said few post up... I was expecting next-gen graphic(from 360 and PS3) as Final Fantasy VII advent children graphics but I was disappointed... but if this game is really render on PS3 I'm not going deny it look *****' nice...
I thought winning the consoles war who had more exclusive and more sales than other console, and that why PS2 was successful but since xbox 360 and ps3 are getting the same games(not all), so what is left to win the war? price? and looks? - RubberbandLN6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually that was 100% in real time, from Gamespot "Specifically, you could totally change the color schemes of the scene at will. Sepia tone, black-and-white, night vision, and some other options were available, and simply cycling through them was possible with a single button press." It also seemed to be running in full 1080p.
- ryllharu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11If the PS2 was capable of launching nuclear missiles out of Iraq (the actual reason for the invasion of Kuwait, access to PS2s), the PS3 will be able to use its Blu-Ray laser to wipe the planet clean of any ethnicity you feel needs a little cleansing, as well as devise string theory, clean your room by wirelessly connecting to your Roomba, AND solve world hunger by making as many Mean Lean grilled burgers as it can.
Gaphics? It can do that in its spare time. - jbreckman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's not that they CAN'T fit it into the boxes... it's that they were running development machines. Obviously Sony is going to manufacture test machines before actually setting up their factories to produce the PS3. (You think they set up their factories and cross their fingers?)
Besides, developers need a bunch of extra features, like debugging.
The Wii did the same thing.
I'd bet the hardware is pretty finalized at this point. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It looked good, but I was distracted by her mouth movements...or lack of them. I can see what some developer was talking about in some other article I was reading recently--it seems to be a pain in the butt to make a smile look "natural" in these games--with the wrinkles and everything else that one doesn't really think about, it seems to be a lot more challenging then one would expect. I mean, don't get me wrong, the movie was pretty good, but her smile was like...not sure how to put it. It looked like she just had a face transplant or something. I guess it fit the part since she was playing a psychotic freak, but how are you going to create an emotional character in a game with expressions such as that? Good enviornment though. Polygons on character were decent as well.
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Gamecube was more powerful. You dont even need specs to prove that, look at metroid prime.
