"We are supporting the hell out of Nintendo, buying their consoles like mad, and they can't even listen to a simple suggestion by 99% of all their customers??"
Uh, dude. Relax.
The console just came out 4 months ago.
Hyperbole (99%???) gets you nowhere.
And you know what? Its just a game console. How can you let it get you very quite angry? - probune, on 10/12/2007, -10/+46It's not a small thing when you need to enter friend codes for every Wii console and every game.

- AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29Great post. I enjoyed reading your points. As my comment says on the blog post, I am very quite angry with the way Nintendo is handling the online strategy for the Wii. They need to either confirm a single, unified friend code, or even better, get rid of that whole "friend" system all together. We are supporting the hell out of Nintendo, buying their consoles like mad, and they can't even listen to a simple suggestion by 99% of all their customers??
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Cut their losses you say?
By losses I assume you are referring to the profits they earn each time the system is sold - unlike the PS3 and (until perhaps just recently) the 360. In that case, the word you were looking for was "profits" and not "losses". - SatNav, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19rich and bored?
a)It's the cheapest of the three consoles
b)all computer games are for bored people
I don't generally like to resort to name-calling, but *man* that was a retarded comment - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19They need to start working on a console to compete with the Wii. I doubt the 360 and PS3 will ever catch up with the Wii so they should probably cut their losses and try to develop something innovative instead of just another box that plays Halo and Metal Gear Solid.
- Nocturnalis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Nintendo needs to get their multiplayer development up to speed. Wii Sports on multiplayer would have made it one of the greatest games of all times. SERIOUSLY!
- ggnictee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Nintendo (i believe) could easily come out on top this generation but you are right that they are in desperate need of a "Live" service and a way to impower indi-developers. It would definatly give them a boost against their competition (both of whome seem to have used AIM before (it's a friends list! come on!) As well as giving gamers access to a widder and more interesting variety of games (especialy if you came up witha way to share the 5$ you charged for the game)
but you missed a lot of stuf so while i'm complaining: if you have bluetooth why don't you have keyboard and mouse support?! why!and why is Sonic and the Secret Rings still in 3d-thrid person? Sidescroller! with online races! come on! why won't my ds sync with my wii? I want my NintenDog to automaticly jump from my ds to my 24connect wii when i'm home, and for that matter why won't it see other nearby ds's and challange them to a fight? And you have a usb port, where's harddrive support? where?!
We're only missing a few things, but You can do it nintendo! just ...you know ...do it! - richterbelmont, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16"The most grievous sin Nintendo has committed is their neglect of online play."
And yet the Wii is still flying off store shelves faster than Nintendo can make them... perhaps the casual audience that they're targeting isn't all that obsessed with online play? - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12One thing I would add to that list is DS integration. Not so much that I want to be required to own a DS to play a game properly (GBA/Four Swords much? I know you could still play it w/out a GBA but you get the point).
What I mean is that I seem to remember hearing speculation about me waking up in the morning, seeing my Wii lit up and knowing Nintendo sent me a little something... At this point I'd fire up my Wii and my DS and using the DS download play I could try out demos of upcoming DS games.
What happened to that idea? Or was that never even mentioned and I just dreamed it up in my head? I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine this.. any thoughts?
DS Demos please! - Exhaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@FishyJoe
Incompetence is THE only word to describe Nintendo's online offering. I have a Wii and really like it but its called "the next generation" and so far their online functionality is anything but. Like the poster said "What have they being doing for seven years since SegaNet?"
All you people posting give them some time its only been 4 months.... They better fix it or this incredible word of mouth they're getting will die off fast. Yes motion sensing controller is nice but we need A LOT better online support and we need more good games. Just because their selling like hot cakes now doesn't mean it will stay that way without these missing features.
I swear I think all these blind Nintendo fanboys saying friend codes aren't that bad must have never even tried Xbox Live. Hell even Playstation Network is stomping Nintendo in the online arena. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13The PS3 is $600, not $300.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23the wii has ONE friend code, not separate codes per game. The only reason pokemon has it's own code is because it uses the DS online service, all the other games will use the system friend code. but yeah, they do need to hurry up and launch their online service.
- cronotrigger913, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I think the biggest thing for Nintendo to focus on was the mentioned "Indie Channel", where games like flOw would be featured. It's one of the major components of a next-gen console right now, what with XBLA and Playstation Network, and Nintendo would be foolish not to offer these games for their customers. It may eventually happen, as the article suggest, but its amazing they have not done so yet. This is another aspect where Nintendo fails to listen to what its customers want. Small games like flOw would do great with the non-gamer crowd, as they are fairly short games, ones where you don't need to put in 80+ hours to enjoy it all.
- springfield, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13One thing they really need to do is ship more Wii faster!
- wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Who needs whiz-bang graphics if the games are actually fun and innovative?
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13"Who needs whiz-bang graphics if the games are actually fun and innovative?"
Same old/same old
There are no fun games on the other consoles? Which ones have you tried that made you come to this conclusion? - redwingsfan77, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17I hope there is a grand plan in place. But it certainly seems strange that Nintendo is taking such a terrible approach to online play. All they have to do is COPY their competitors... and make old games networkable. Very little original thought needed here. Nintendo is only being held back by their own incompetence.
- SatNav, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10the DS lite does not have any more memory than the original, and no companies "progressively increase the resources" of their consoles. The whole point of games consoles is that they are all identical in terms of internal hardware, so they can guarantee that a game will work on every console.
And back-lighting is essential is it? As I recall, the game gear was backlit, and the original gameboy wasn't - yet it still *killed* the game gear. - ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Microsoft sure isn't waiting around. They're already working on the next Xbox, in addition to putting out the improved 360. This generation MS has really worked its ass off getting getting the devs on board as well as trying to break into the Japanese market.
The Wii is a great console but Nintendo doesn't seem to be fully utilizing what they have with it. - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16Incompetence? They are the undisputed leader in the portable market. And they are well on their way to outpacing their rivals in the console market. Maybe they don't have everything you want, but their business is thriving and will continue to do so for the forseeable future. Could they do more? Of course, but incompetence is the last word I'd use to describe their business.
- DorkmasterFlek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7True, because right now several 3rd parties look at the crazy sales numbers and say "Holy $*%& we have to get on board this money train!" which results in shoddy ports of existing games. The motion controls feel "tacked-on" because that's exactly what they are. I guarantee that over the next several years you will see original and very cool games that are designed around the remote that you won't see anywhere else, but it takes time to develop them and a lot of developers, while excited about the prospects of motion controls, were uncertain how well it would play out. Now they know it's successful, so they actually start working. The existing original games like Wario Ware, Rayman, Wii Sports and such do a good job of showing what the remote is capable of, the only problem is we need original games designed from the ground up for the Wii for it to really reach its full potential. The same is true of any console really.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sony just called. Your PR check is in the mail.
- woogley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6if the new smash brothers does not have an online feature, nintendo is seriously retarded.
even DS games are enjoying some online success, so why not the Wii?
..but if smash brothers DOES come with an online feature, and it's based on friend codes.. why in the hell is the Mii system in place? - etempest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is how Halo started out, the fun was bring you console to a friends and have a Halo Party.

As a Wii owner...
My best friends have the 360. I don't care for the 360. It's got gorgeous graphics, I love the wireless- but it's not for me. I'd prefer the PS3. Graphics compared are = or > X360. So the PS3 is really the ideal console for me, as the Wii's graphics are = regular Xbox. But now- let's compare the fun factor. I can play a gorgeous game, and get frustrated because it's boring. It doesn't matter what console- let's face it, great graphics does not always = great game. Control, fun, challenge all come into play. The Wii sacrificed graphics to be-
A) more affordable than PS3 or X360 and
B) innovative.
But.... you said- "To me, nintendo Wii is a system truly for the rich and bored." Ok- let's do some simple math.
Wii, basic sports package- $250.00. That includes a 5 game(or as some prefer to call them, mini-games) bundle, and a single controller. I also bought Madden when I bought the Wii for $50. So- technically- I got a Wii and 6 games for $300.00
Xbox 360- the basic(cheap) model is only $300.00. Ok, that's only $50 more than the Wii. But now you need the hard drive- $90, wireless controller(comes with a wired one)-$38.00, and let's be reasonable and say 2 games-$120. We're in for $550.00 now- $300 more than Wii.
PS3- basic- 20 gb model. I think this bad boy started at $500, right? Let's get nothing but two other games- $120- Now we're almost $100 over the Xbox 360- which in this instance, the 360 would be the better console. We could get the 60 GB PS3, and have the über-console, but then we're besting $700.
"To me, nintendo Wii is a system truly for the rich and bored."
...
I'm shaking my head in disbelief, SLuM. - TheHRE, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Have you ever even played on a Wii? You sound like you barely know what one is.
- Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7From what Gamespy has said, the friend codes will not be unified, with games having separate ones from the systems. It is annoying to have to punch in a 20 some odd character code for each of your friend's systems, then again for every game each of those friends have. As it stands, it takes a minute or two to enter a code in, due to the speed of entering in the characters on the Wii via the Wiimote, and running back and forth between my computer and Wii to get all the numbers.
To those who want me to provide the link, http://digg.com/gaming_news/Wii_Friend_Codes_to_be_GAME_SPECIFIC and the direct http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158027 - Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's comments like Slum's that make me just want to bash my head into a wall.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What are they waiting for? I ask, what motivation do they have to do anything at all right now? Their systems are still selling as soon as they hit store shelves.
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think that the port mindset of greedy developers stands to really hurt the Wii.
If all developers can get away with tacking home shoddy motion controls as an afterthought they will continue to do it - and it will definitely make the Wii motion controls look bad as a result. Developers don't want to put in any extra effort - not since they found out that they can make the same exact game and get paid for it three times. Then they can make a cheap ass sequel and get paid for it three more times.
I think a lot of third party developers have gotten into the bad habit of making one decent game, porting it two or three times, then making minute changes and building a few new levels to re-release it as a whole new title and port it even more. There is money to be made this way, so I guess you can't hold them at fault if everyone keeps buying the *****.
Good example is the entire Tony Hawk Pro Skater legacy. In the first game they got the basics down. By the second game it was refined pretty well (personally I had a great time playing THPS2 on my PC). Soon after that it became apparent that the amount of work required for them to keep pushing out sequels was getting to less and less - but the payout was the same. I felt insulted that they would change the look of the on screen display and build a few more maps and expect I was foolish enough to shell out another $50 for it. No thank you. - BakedGoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@*****
I'm really not sure where you got all that from.
It took Nintendo a while to develop a power system that could sustain a backlight. If you remember the Game Gear (and even the PSP now) it's battery life was atrocious. It was only with the DS (and even better, the Lite) that Nintendo was able to offer a backlit handheld system that had an acceptable battery life and wasn't a brick. They could have purposely delayed the tech development, if that's the case you could call it strategic marketing, but it is well known that backlit handhelds outside of (and before) the DS had garbage battery life. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"how long did it take Nintendo to realise that back-lighting was essential for their hand-held consoles?"
Uh, how many of the same users did Nintendo get to buy a Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP, DS, AND the DS Lite, "with new improved backlighting!"
"Being lazy"? I think its marketing strategy. And it works. - Indecision, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Since day one consumers have been buying them just to buy them without actually thinking through what Wii has to offer compared to its competitors or what the system will be able to continue to offer through the future."
Wow...I couldn't disagree with you more. Seriously, I don't even understand how you can make that claim.
The reason I bought a Wii is precisely *because of* what it has to offer compared to the competitors. Aside from the price being attractive, I have exactly the opposite opinion of the controller from you. What do you mean, "fresh ideas with its motion technology are already going stale"? There have been *no* fresh ideas yet. There hasn't been enough time for any game developer to come up with any truly innovative ideas. Swinging the wiimote to swing a sword? That's not a fresh idea, that's an *immediately obvious* idea.
I'm still waiting to see the "fresh ideas" for the wiimote, and it's precisely because of the potential I saw in it that I bought a Wii. But then, I'm a fan of the puzzle games genre, and I can't wait to see what kind of puzzle games can be made with the use of two motion-sensitive controllers. - dasilva333, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13okay imagine you are out wiht a buddy who has a wii, you are not anywhere near a computer, no pen no paper, and u guys wanna exchange 'gamer tags' to play online with each other, how easy is it to really memorize a 16 digit code and just hand it out casually in any given moment? not that easy
- dhVyse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@SLuM
Theres a reason why your comments keep getting buried almost instantly... because they are useless to the conversation. - DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"What's the big deal with friend codes? You're all capable of playing and beating games that take 10, 20, 40+ hours to beat, but you're not capable of entering a few numbers? You can dial a phone, you can enter e-mail addresses, you can enter website addresses, but you can't enter a friend code? Come on stop bitching about such a small thing."
What's the big deal with password systems in games? You're all capable of playing and beating games that take 10, 20, 40+ hours to beat, but you're not capable of entering a few letters and numbers? You can dial a phone, you can enter e-mail addresses, you can enter website addresses, but you can't enter a password? Come on stop bitching about such a small thing. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Holy Crap. I am going to scream. Some of you don't understand one basic thing:
1. FRIEND CODES DO NOT STOP GAMES FROM HAVING AN ONLINE MULTIPLAYER COMPONENT - THE ONLY THING FRIEND CODES DO IS MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO PLAY WITH YOUR...FRIENDS.
Did you get that? I hope so. I guarantee 99% of the time you play online WITHOUT your friends, in randomly created matches. The Wii can handle this just fine. Stop panicking!! Even with xbox live (I own a 360) I rarely play games WITH my friends because we don't set up meeting times and when we are online we are doing different things. Jesus! this "Wii can't do online thing" is out of god damn control. It CAN do online. I'm sorry, I refuse to believe that everyone here waits around all day for their friends to come online, then suddenly 40 of you jump into the same game. I'm sorry, I'm a gamer and I KNOW thats not how it works. - darthtrevino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My point being that you can admire a product, and still find room to grieve over it's weaknesses. It's not that these areas are unimportant, but there's a tradeoff going on.
- bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's the point I was expecting to see in the article. Nintendo enabled downloadable demos for the DS....but you have to be in a store with the demo machine turned on in order to get the content.
Meanwhile, they ship millions of Wii consoles - with Wi-Fi - and haven't developed the architecture to allow the console to act as a download station. What are they waiting for?
As someone who decided to buy Elite Beat Agents after playing the demo (the only one I've ever successfully downloaded, FWIW), this is something that needs to happen. - jefbob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@dasilva333 - Store it in your cell phone, that's what I did. But all kidding aside, it is slightly annoying and for those saying you need one for each game, I am pretty sure that it carries from game to game. I had read somewhere that this was a huge misunderstanding, but you would only need to put a friends console code in once.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@SatNav
The Gameboy killed the Game Gear because it was less expensive, had more games, and didnt chew through batteries like it was going out of style.
You mean to tell me if the next DS or Gameboy shipped without a backlight you would buy it full well knowing in a year a new "super" model with amazing back lighting would be out? Give me a break, we all know its important.
I have no problem with someone defending a companies decisions but dont be a blatant fanboy when doing so. - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You forget one important thing: Chat. If you are just doing random matches you won't get chat, no voice, no text, nada, since thats exactly what friend codes are there to prevent. Good luck trying to do any kind of game there that requires a little bit of team coordination. And if that wouldn't be enough, you can also pretty much forget any kind of online tournaments, since you really don't wanna add dozens of friend codes just for a single match, you of course won't have any lobby or whatever to coordinate stuff either. And don't think you will ever be able to add somebody after a match to your friend list, since that again is exactly what those codes are meant to prevent.
Friend codes do absolutely nothing good for online gaming, but they are great at limit it beyond anything more then random matchmaking. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Unfortunately I have no desire to own a PS3 or a PSP - and furthermore I have no desire to use a PS3 to download PSone ports to a PSP. :P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9"Who needs whiz-bang graphics if the games are actually fun and innovative?"
Because PS3 and 360 have both whiz-bang graphics, and fun innovative games - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The problem with selling to a casual audience is they dont buy very many games...Maybe 1-2 per year which is not enought to satisfy publishers goals.
Casual gamers help. but its the hardcore that drive the market. - Visnik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4here is the simple problem with wii codes. I have to enter one for a friend, he has to enter mine. then we have to say we both need to accept. So lets say i enter a friends code. He being a busy person my not accept for quite a while. Now I have a un-usable friend in my list. If I enter his code, he should get a message on his wii saying. "so and So added you as a friend would you like to accept." If you accept then boom you are now entered on his automatically and you are connected. Then there is the have to go into the message section of the interface and figure out how to do this complicated thing (for older people). I should just be able to go into the Mii section and say add a friend there. and input the code or ip address there or, search via zip code or city for some one. Also the problem is that once I set to mingle, my Nintendo should automatically talk to other Wiis that are set to mingle and random Miis should show up on my Nintendo from there select that mii and say make him/her a friend. What the hell does mingle do anyway? Can some one please tell me. The whole add a friend via the code system as it is, is much more complicated then it has to be.
my rant. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PS3 does that with PSP
- Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love Nintendo and I love my Wii and DS. I have always been happy with all of their consoles from the NES up to the Wii. Yet, they do some things that make me scratch my head. Why do they just not get that people want to play online? I cannot understand it. It's as if they've never heard of WoW or Xbox Live. They have the people's attention again, so they need to keep it. It's 2007...c'mon, Nintendo. Please don't let us down. They have this weird delusion about only letting people play in a first person party atmosphere, which is all well and good, but that can't always be the case.
Also, another thing is that DS interaction. Someone made a good point about how Nintendogs could work with the Wii. That's a great idea. Personally, I'd like to be able to bring my dog into the Mii channel and have it interact with my Mii. Things like that would be great.
I realize that all of this takes time and money, but they they can easily do these things. -
