- altekrjl, on 02/02/2008, -3/+19The author is shallow and lame.
- Brad324, on 02/03/2008, -0/+5there's nothing wrong with being a geek. It's having no sense of personal pride that is frowned upon.
Intellectual who doesn't shower, change underwear, leave home, or do anything productive = unattractive.
Intellectual who takes care of himself, lives up to his potential, and realizes the world is not hostile = very eligible.
The main problem is the geeks who don't take themselves seriously - they don't like seeing other geeks succeed, and want to drag them down every chance they get. Rather than build themselves up, they act upon their jealousy instead. They are giving us all a bad name. - deetsnai, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5Playing video games does not make you a geek. That would make every guy that attends college a geek. Know someone that refuses to play video games? They are probably more geeky. While I am not saying geek's don't play video games (they play plenty), its important for the girl who wrote this article to realize it's not 1986.
- MewTwo, on 02/02/2008, -3/+7I agree. I don't want to digg this persons' dumb diary. No integrity.
- Aktrez, on 02/02/2008, -3/+7May I ask how writing about a topic, on a pop culture site .. that deals with issues in the pop culture world is dumb and without integrity? Just curious.
- Grambo, on 02/03/2008, -0/+4Well, Lois, since you asked, I find this meatloaf rather shallow and pedantic.

Thank you Brad! This is exactly my point. I see far too many who bring down others because of jealousy or because they are successful instead of looking to those people as role models. - Aktrez, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3That wasn't my point int he article, Ncainrs. My point is that it doesn't really matter what geeks look like. The problem is that we get made fun of either way and that needs to stop! If we aren't "public's ideal of beauty" we are made fun of. If we are "attractive" we are given crap. My point in the article was to showcase this and start a discussion on how this can change.
- lordtyros, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2I remember the last time I watched Electric Playground he gave some game a 2/10 because he didn't really like the RPG genre. I said WTF and haven't watched since.
- farmboymdp, on 02/02/2008, -5/+7***** Tommy Tallarico.
- ncairns, on 02/03/2008, -1/+3Well, I would argue that popular culture in general is dumb and without integrity, but let me just say this.
That is not what geeks really look like.
I suppose I'm just about the biggest geek in the world. High school in two years, scholarship to Caltech, dual BS in three years, Masters from MIT in one. Mind you, college was great for me, but only because everyone there was orders of magnitude smarter than I am. Public high school was rough though. But that's kind of the point - eventually, what separates real geeks from 'normal' society is a preference for intellect over aesthetic. I don't claim that cute girls don't catch my eye, but I can tell you I was much more interested in the women I met in Cambridge, with whom I could discuss things like quantum theory and artificial intelligence, than I ever could be in the most beautiful girl in the world if she couldn't carry intelligent conversation.
To me, this article is the height of triviality. I don't care if people imagine me as some overweight nerd clutching my D20 in one fist and spooling Linux LiveCDs on each of the fingers on my other hand. Pointing out a few guys who you find attractive to dispel that public perception just feels patronizing and shallow. - sixsidepentagon, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the Cliffnotes version of the article.
- Aktrez, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1I'm not talking about just playing games. I'm talking about a way of life. I'm also not the one who is saying this. I'm the one who is simply bringing it up and starting a discussion about it. It's not just Gregory or others. I too get this feedback on a daily basis. People look at me (a gamer, a comic book fan, an anime connssieur and one who loves cosplay) and say that I'm not a geek or I"m not REAL because of how I look. It just begs the question what am I SUPPOSE to look like in order to be taken seriously.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -1/+2If you're not going to maintain the stereotype, why don't you just get out of the boat?
- Perzephone, on 02/02/2008, -2/+3Why is it that people think that geeks have to look a certain way? Geeks come in all different sizes shapes and aspects of life. So seeing some hot guy or chick the majority thinks that oh there just models posing to be a geek, since there way to good looking to be a geek. How is being a good looking person not allowed to be a geek?
- mrloco, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1Long live Geek Chic!
- ncairns, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1"The problem is that we get made fun of either way and that needs to stop!"
And my point is that I don't mind being made fun of - because the people whose opinions matter to me are generally geeks themselves. The general perception of geeks is only relevant so long as we assume it is, and at some point in their lives most people realize that we 'geeks' are responsible for most of the things that make their lives comfortable. - Aktrez, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1he is in fact.... :p
- ncairns, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1Well that's not what I said, but thanks for distorting it!
- deetsnai, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1cosplay definitely qualifies you for being a geek
- JLecker, on 02/03/2008, -1/+1So "real geeks" can't have any interest in normal society? Here I was, thinking I was a "real geek", having played video games and studied math and the sciences my whole life (and even having majored in engineering). Now I realize that I need to have a superiority complex and dismiss all the people who are stupider than me as unfit for my attention to be a "real geek". I guess I better go tell all my friends who scored lower than me on the SATs that we can't hang out any more.
- JLecker, on 02/03/2008, -1/+1How is she shallow and lame? Because she thinks that Tommy Tallarico and Cliffy B. are attractive?
- JagoX, on 02/02/2008, -2/+2Hey Becky :-)
That's what I've been trying to figure since I first heard people were ripping on Tommy...for no reason logical reason. - pharmakon, on 02/03/2008, -1/+0outta my face
- Halcyon1988, on 02/02/2008, -6/+3I'll digg. Because Tommy T. is awesome. As is Cliffy B. and the others.
- Nikole, on 02/02/2008, -4/+1Is this "Gregory Michael" single?
- davidejr, on 02/02/2008, -7/+2Looks just like me....>,>
- Tedakin, on 02/02/2008, -7/+1i digg it
