- sputnikv, on 09/23/2009, -5/+28i don't know how to say this and sound convincing, but browsers and consoles don't go well together, its counter intuitive. everyone that has live has an internet connection has a computer. nothing beats a mouse and keyboard for web browsing (and a monitor inches from your face)
- cuevas4711, on 09/23/2009, -3/+19Are we really that spoiled that we can't get off our couches to get to our computers?
- rednaxela825, on 09/23/2009, -2/+17From you Digg profile... "A 20 year-old gentleman"
You are 20 years old and you live with your parents and they lock you in your room?
Also, you get what you pay for with Xbox Live. It is completely worth it, whether PS3 has FREE online or not. I also don't see the need for a web browser on the 360. - Ajajadude, on 09/22/2009, -3/+17The PS3 browser isn't all that great. In fact, I never use it anymore.
- v1c1ous, on 09/23/2009, -0/+10nothing like browsing the web on your xbox with the analog stick....wait....*dreamcast net browser nostalgia*
- Bobby1978, on 09/23/2009, -2/+8I was clipping my toenails when a big piece flew off to someones face. He was mad.
- chrispen, on 09/23/2009, -0/+6Laptops and wireless internet create the opportunity to watch tv/movies/porn (mostly porn) from anywhere in the house and is the greatest thing that man will probably ever achieve.
- AiR1890, on 09/23/2009, -2/+7thats why we have laptops
- Sabin, on 09/23/2009, -1/+6Actually Sony will let all games work with a mouse and keyboard. It the developers choice though if they will include support for that. I remember even Dirge of Cerberus on the PS2 had mouse and keyboard support.
- cadillacboogie, on 09/23/2009, -0/+5Why does it link to the joystiq.com blog post rather than the actual Businessweek article? http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/sep ...
- inactive, on 09/23/2009, -0/+5Mostly they come out at night, mostly.
- Allanon, on 09/23/2009, -1/+5http://gizmodo.com/223963/xcm-xfps-xbox-360-keyboa ...
Also, you can plug a standard USB keyboard in to the Xbox 360 and it will allow you to enter text but not work for games. - Allanon, on 09/23/2009, -0/+4I find it nice to have choices when sitting at the TV. If the networks aren't broadcasting anything I like then I can switch to the Internet where there are tons of video content to choose from. Instead of sitting at my computer, it's much more comfortable to sit on the couch and watch it on a big screen. If I get tired of playing games I might sit and watch a few videos, the Xbox 360 already allows you to rent movies and to watch Netflix, why not add web content to the mix? I agree web browsing should be done on a computer but I don't see why web videos shouldn't be viewed on a large HDTV.
I'm doing it now using my Tivo HD and I'm sure people that own a Xbox 360 would like to do the same. - frieddonuts, on 09/23/2009, -1/+5I think that he was saying that he can lock them out, making it convenient for his recreational activity of choice.
- Allanon, on 09/23/2009, -0/+4Xbox Live needs to implement a web content feature like the one that is available on a Tivo HD. The Tivo allows you to select from and subscribe to over 500 videocasts from the internet and if they don't list the videocast you want then just enter the RSS feed for the videocast to gain access to that video content. Also adding a YouTube feature like the one on the Tivo would be nice.
- Tiptup300, on 09/23/2009, -1/+5cool story bro.
- weeFred, on 09/23/2009, -1/+5*Grabs flamethrower*, never bring popcorn to a flame war.
- frieddonuts, on 09/23/2009, -1/+4the new PS3-specific site for youtube is actually pretty snappy. hulu is virtually unusable though, because it's so choppy.
- cyoder, on 09/23/2009, -1/+4Personally, I use my PS3 to stream videos sometimes (and not always adult-themed) when I want to watch over my TV and home theater system. I could hook up a laptop to the TV, but having that capability with the PS3 is very convenient. As such, I can totally understand why a 360 user would want the option.
- omgwtflawl, on 09/23/2009, -1/+4Sometimes I dream about cheese.
- Darksoul, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3Not surprised just like they wont allow use of a keyboard and mouse on their system, Sony is a bit like that but they at least let some games to work with a mouse and keyboard. I really don't care though when it comes to browsing the internet on the 360 or my PS3 I tried it once on my PS3 and it was to slow.
- mesasone, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3I had the mouse and keyboard for my Dreamcast... too bad Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament were pants on the DC.
- weeFred, on 09/23/2009, -1/+4I like how you specified Muse, nice one.
- vimbuza, on 09/23/2009, -5/+7OK, let me just throw this out there, because apparently this sentence has not been written anywhere in the entire history of the internet. I Googled it... this is the sentence: "There is no such thing as volunteering when you are the low man on the totem pole." But it is so true... I learned today that a particular detail our unit was tasked with required some volunteers. I didn't volunteer, but it doesn't matter at all because whether or not I volunteered, because I was the low ranking person in the unit, I would be tasked with it anyway. So whether or not I volunteered for it, I would end up doing it because no one else would "volunteer" for it either.
- AngryDeuce, on 09/23/2009, -0/+2Really, who actually wants to surf the web on a console? I've used it on my Wii about 3 times. Granted, I have a media center/server hooked up to my TV, but I don't even use THAT for web browsing very much...
I mean, I can see how some people may use it, but I'm betting that the minority actually expects that functionality. Besides, it's not like you can do both at the same time (surf the web and game) on a console so what's the big deal?
Web Browsers on game consoles is just one of those things that sounds awesome but nobody uses. I wouldn't even download it if I had a choice, even if they DID release it for the 360. Hard drive space is precious, even with 120GB drive... - TotalHalibut, on 09/23/2009, -0/+2Because Webblogs Inc is all about 'borrowing' content from other sources and making ad-dollars off it?
- NeoTechni, on 09/23/2009, -4/+6PS3 can use firefox...
And Ive had no problems with PS3s browser. Its worlds better than wiis - paulsmith288, on 09/23/2009, -1/+3ut3 has key/mouse support
- jacksons98, on 09/22/2009, -3/+5I use PS3s browser all the time. Here is a good tip for getting it to work better. Turn off Javascript unless you absolutely need it. Only a few sites like youtube make you turn it on, but for just reading the news, getting trophy information, etc... sites will load a lot faster without that on.
- phbohn2, on 09/23/2009, -1/+3i like how i can do all that in between rounds on my laptop.
- vimbuza, on 09/23/2009, -1/+3I like cheese.
- paulsmith288, on 09/23/2009, -1/+3I use it a little bit - it does come in handy sometimes for sports results
- Darksoul, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2Yeah I know I read about that while ago, I just wish more developers use that function I remember it because back on the PS2 they let you use a keyboard and mouse. I think its just mostly a "Microsoft" problem since they make operating systems and stuff they don't want to associate their consoles with a pc, which is stupid if you ask me.
- Atomic1fire, on 09/27/2009, -0/+1I think we got that now...
- MentalBeaver, on 09/23/2009, -2/+3It would be nice to have the option but it's really not a necessity for me.
- inactive, on 09/23/2009, -3/+4The web is begging for Xbox live and I think they'll miss out with this strategy. I can't tell you how many times I've checked out a Muse music video on youtube via the PS3's browser or browsed digg after a tiring 3 hour COD4 match (matches rather). The stumbling point as the poster above stated is that the controller isn't a great interface, but MS should take a cue from Sony and implement T9 predictive input at the very least. Let's not forget that Xbox has a keybad addon as well. I'm not overly fond of Sony's browser implementation, but it gives you access to a whole host of content for a small amount of effort on Sony's part.
- inactive, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1Web videos aren't streamed in high definition. Youtube has god-awful quality and the few videos that are "HD" are barely VHS. Netflix has a much higher streaming quality (obviously) but it's still not "HD" by any definition. I -do- have my Xbox 360 setup to stream movies to my TV but I'd much rather get the Bluray, or DVD and see it in a much higher quality.
The only time I could ever see a single unit being a "media center" is if game systems became like DVD players; every unit is able to play every movie if it's in the right region. So until we have a massive Console War and are left with Taco Bell, I mean Nintenboxstation no console is going to be able to say "Hey, I can meet all of your entertainment needs" - Tiptup300, on 09/27/2009, -0/+1Exactly!
- IAmMrTea08, on 09/23/2009, -2/+3*grabs popcorn* Flame War!
- Darksoul, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Yeah I know about both the xfps and the fragfx, I use my keyboard on both my xbox 360 and my ps3 when I want to type faster and longer with out having to take forever.
- Atomic1fire, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1I don't see why Nintendo doesn't think, casual + media = WIN
a video channel (powered by something like say... hulu) would be a good idea, and coupled with an in channel ratings system, parents wouldn't have to worry about their kids watching family guy.
Older people would enjoy it because the access to content and programing that tv cant provide normally.
Cable/tv will still have viewers wanting to see the show first, but being able to catch up on a big screen would be great appeal.
a media channel to go with that to allow people to access movie or music files would be good too, and if they combine that with wii sports, or resort, people could do awesome soundtracks while they play. - danwallace, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2That's what I don't get. It seems like they consider it some huge selling point. Why anyone would need to use twitter or facebook on their xbox when you can do those things on your cell phone is beyond me.
- xino, on 09/23/2009, -1/+2Red Faction 2 did as well.
- Atomic1fire, on 09/27/2009, -0/+1They have Iphone webapps, why not apps designed for the consoles.
- Tiptup300, on 09/23/2009, -1/+2I actually like how Microsoft is doing the whole web content thing. Look at how they're adding facebook/last.fm/netflix. I wish they would make an open system where developers could make individual apps for websites to browse content. My favorites would be a youtube app and a hulu app.
- Tiptup300, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1No, that would be retarded. TV browsers are terrible. You have to scroll all ackwardly then zoom in real close, then zoom out, find another part of the site then zoom in. Terrible.
The web itself is designed for viewing on a monitor, up close by one person at a time. - inactive, on 09/23/2009, -1/+1Why?
If you have Xbox Live, you have Internet access, if you have Internet access you have a computer, if you have a computer you have a machine MEANT TO ACCESS THE INTERNET.
Christ. I don't need 15 machines in my house promising to be the "all in one media center". If I want to play a video game, I'll turn on my Playstation, Xbox, Wii, or DS. If I want to make a phone call I'll use my phone. If I want to go on the Internet I'll use my computer. If I want to bake some ***** brownies, I'll use my oven.
No one needs 15 machines that do Internet browsing, picture taking, video games and jerk you off.
Well maybe that last part. - jacksons98, on 09/23/2009, -2/+2It will become a priority once they figure out a way to charge 360 owners for it
- inactive, on 09/23/2009, -3/+3aaaawwwwwwwww, can't wank to net porn without the parentals interrupting you. Too bad. If you're really 20 years old as the profile says then move out, get a girlfriend, and do more than fap to net porn.
- NeoTechni, on 09/23/2009, -1/+1or a web browser
