- WilliamDS, on 03/17/2008, -10/+115there's no reason to retire them as long as good games are released
- Jio666, on 03/17/2008, -9/+95Calin would have a point if SSBB and Super Mario Galaxy weren't awesome.
- Sedako, on 03/17/2008, -4/+85In all seriousness, Nintendo should really start looking into some new IPs. I understand why they aren't, seeing that it's those same IPs that sell their systems, but to me this method has been showing signs of wear for a while now. Mario galaxy was a fresh experience as far as game play, but in the end I'm still rescuing the same princess from the same dinosaur. Twilight Princess wasn't all that it could have been, and I still prefer OOT. Both endings were highly predictable and didn't really feel all that rewarding, because I felt as though I had seen the same thing before. For as innovative as the Wii is, I wish Nintendo would also use some of that innovative spirit for game franchises. I hope I'm not disappointed in July.
- RobertMarley, on 03/17/2008, -5/+72porn and video games have always gone hand in hand. its a hands thing.
- greenblob, on 03/17/2008, -2/+46Well, should Marvel retire its superheroes? They've been around for much, much longer, yet they're not going anywhere.
- inactive, on 03/17/2008, -16/+53Mario and Sonic are classics. Why shouldn't are children enjoy the same great games that we grew up playing? I do agree, however, that it has to stop sometime.
- AwesomeMonster, on 03/17/2008, -7/+42Sonic maybe, sonic team has been slipping as of late save about 2 ds titles, but mario? Right after 2 GIGANTIC releases (galaxy and smash bros... and soon kart) both receiving glowing reviews, well, I think this man simply refuses to accept the brilliance of in house Nintendo.
- Brad324, on 03/17/2008, -4/+37and now you spelled "I'm retarded" wrong.
- tehbored, on 03/17/2008, -0/+31Mario is still going strong, but lately Sonic hasn't been doing so well.
- Dkittels, on 03/17/2008, -2/+28Yes and let's also retire Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, and James Bond.
I mean, because they're old and have been in a lot of stuff. And this somehow means they can't offer us entertainment and everything with a "timeless" character in it is obviously just trash that is only selling because of the character and it is holding us all back (SEE: Mario Galaxy).
This is a very logical argument I am making. - RSS14, on 03/17/2008, -3/+27Though I liked your comment, I am going to bury it to teach you that the universe is arbitrary and unfair.
- Sedako, on 03/17/2008, -0/+23E3
- Frozenfuryblade, on 03/17/2008, -2/+24Its not that Nintendo needs a new franchise, they've got Pikmin, the Wii series, Fire Emblem Americanization, Disaster: Day of Crisis(Probably wrong title. Something like that). I think what they really need is a new icon. When was the last time Nintendo created a character as earthshattering as mario? As cool as Link? As amazing as Samus? In recent years... they haven't. Nintendo doesn't need a new game, it needs a new face.
- kinseyincanada, on 03/17/2008, -3/+23I think they should make a Zelda RPG, make it along the lines of the Mario one, it would be amazing,
- doshindude, on 03/17/2008, -0/+20Nintendo redeemed Sonic a little bit with Brawl....how ironic.
- WhereAmI, on 03/17/2008, -4/+22Or they can just release Paper Zelda, or Doctor Zelda.
- eak125, on 03/17/2008, -3/+20I find it unusually refreshing to see someone be their own grammar Nazi!
- Etchii, on 03/17/2008, -2/+17I've been a gamer for almost 20 years and based off of the experiences of games in the last few years, maybe a look at the past is just what the industry needs. Back when HD wasn't even a concept, when you couldn't just put out a game with graphics, and it was about gameplay.
Plus i'd love a new 3d 2d style side scrolling sonic ! - quomen, on 03/17/2008, -1/+15Sonic should be retired until they decide to make a ***** GOOD game. The last great Sonic game was on Genesis (Sonic & Knuckles)[or the last one that I played]. What's wrong with 2D games? Until we get over the 3D crapfetish that has ruined some games i'd rather they not come back.
- inactive, on 03/17/2008, -2/+16Uhhh...Did you play Galaxy?
- Apokalyps2547, on 03/17/2008, -1/+14Nintendo isn't stupid.
Putting Mario in games HELPS sales. It's true. Would Mario Golf have sold any copies if it contained no Mario characters (assuming they gave it a different name)? Hell no. - JustJoe4Life, on 03/17/2008, -1/+14Mario will still be battling Bowser long after this writer's six feet under.
- DarkGrim, on 03/17/2008, -3/+15Sonic hasn't been good since Genesis days, they have to release at least another good sonic game before he's retired.
- Sabin, on 03/17/2008, -3/+14You obviously missed Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast or all the Sonic games on the GBA and DS. Sonic is generally good so long as it stays 2D although Sonic Rivals is looking to change that..
- omegaredIX, on 03/17/2008, -2/+13Ummm the only time i really enjoyed playing sonic was on the dreamcast..ah dreamcast. i miss you so
- bryceman111, on 03/17/2008, -4/+15J, U, L, and Y. Duh...
- inactive, on 03/17/2008, -1/+11To bad that the place where he wants to lay his pipe are always in another ***** castle.
- cozamonkey, on 03/17/2008, -1/+11What's in July?
- Protoss, on 03/17/2008, -1/+11Nintendo putting their old rivals key character into one of their flagship titles is the irony....
- yoshi8710, on 03/17/2008, -1/+10...wtf
since when was mario homosexual? - hotsoda, on 03/17/2008, -0/+9I really don't agree with that comment. The fact is, Mario and Sonic are just icons. They're characters used for recognition and mind share. Discount SEGA and Sonic all you want, but I don't think you can argue about Nintendo not being innovative. You have the blatant success of the Wii and DS, and they HAVE been supporting new IPs. Take a look at Pikmin, Advanced Wars, Brain Age the even Wii Sports and Wii fit. There are also tons of games that are only in Japan that haven't been released in the US.
If you took out the characters and created new ones to fill their places, something tells me the game wouldn't sell nearly as much. And can you really say that Mario Galaxy is the same game as Mario Sunshine, or Mario 64? Or Zelda? Or Metroid? They are new games, wrapped around a familiar shell.
On the technology side, sure, the Xbox 360 and PS3 may be superior, but it's obvious that's not what most consumers want. Wii and DS sales are nothing short of amazing, and you can even look at the PC space - AAA games like Call of Duty and Crysis sell a lot less than The Sims (insert expansion here) or Wold of Warcraft. - reed311, on 03/17/2008, -0/+9Well, not a single character, but Pokemon has been as profitable as any of their mainstays. It's the 2nd most successful media and video game franchise.
- fantasticFlan, on 03/17/2008, -1/+10When was the last time anyone created a character as earthshattering as Mario? It's not an easy thing to do.
- masivemunkey, on 03/17/2008, -0/+8Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast is arguably one of the best Sonic games
- hellsing47, on 03/17/2008, -1/+9Mario related games are (usually) very good and have undergone a quality production.
Many of the recent Sonic games may not be the same, but regardless the author of this article made horrible correlation comparing video game characters in reoccurring game series to actors/actresses appearing in multiple movies.
Flood his site to remind him that the first amendment is not reserved for stupid. - DrShotgun, on 03/17/2008, -4/+12Sonic needs an epic title of epic ownage that makes even the classics look bad before Sega retires him.
- zointax, on 03/17/2008, -1/+9Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit and anything that uses Miis.
- haikuFU, on 03/17/2008, -0/+8I hear Mario is pretty good at laying pipe.
- BlackTye, on 03/17/2008, -3/+10They sell, therefore they will not be retired. It's as simple as that. Since when has any industry acted on principle instead of profit?
Also, Nintendo makes great first party titles, why should they drop Mario? - Atom, on 03/17/2008, -2/+8According to wikipedia, "As of December 31, 2007, New Super Mario Bros. has sold 13.14 million copies worldwide." The Rest of the World agrees w/ nintendo and sega. Keep the classics comming but keep them true to form.
- capiCrimm, on 03/17/2008, -3/+9perhaps you need a new Wii?
(i refuse to retire the joke) - rstarr, on 03/17/2008, -0/+6Well Master Chief has become pretty recognizable. He's not on the same level, but still a new face for a console is possible.
- inactive, on 03/17/2008, -0/+6Yeah, this article killed my boner.
- DIAF, on 03/17/2008, -1/+6Not that it's his own game, but he's pretty sweet in SSB Brawl. Too bad Nintendo had to do it for them.
- inactive, on 03/17/2008, -0/+5I don't see why fresh ideas must necessarily need fresh characters. Obviously, you need a new character if the idea isn't really suitable for any current characters, but there are other ways to innovate. Case in point: take the Metroid Prime series. Nintendo decided to make an FPS, but rather than just creating one from scratch, the built upon an existing franchise. It turned out to be a brilliant move - all of the elements the Metroid serious was famous for were brought into a new setting. This actually ensured that the game would not be a generic space shooter.
Or how about Smash Bros.? I mean, part of its success is the cast of familiar characters, but that cast actually contributed to making the gameplay unique - most of the characters were not typical fighting-game material, and so the gameplay had to be designed around that fact, which led to an original, innovative fighting system which is still loads of fun to play.
You don't even have to go into a new genre, though. Look at Mario. Mario basically defined the platforming genre. Most recently, there was Mario Galaxy, which was an incredible game. I think part of that is the fact that people know Mario, and they have very high expectations. There's a lot of pressure to keep the games fresh and exciting, pressure that wouldn't be there if it weren't for the character Mario.
Reusing old IPs can actually lead to more innovative gameplay, and help prevent games from ending up feeling generic. Nintendo needs to be willing to explore new genres and new gameplay mechanics, but to abandon their old creations would be a mistake, I feel. - Rapter09, on 03/17/2008, -1/+6Give it a few years, and we'll see what really happens. Right now, the people that grew up with Mario and Sonic and Co are still very much alive, still very much active in the gaming world. Actually, we're either the ones making the games or ordering the people around who make the games. So, nostalgia, and Mario and Sonic and all of those old characters are still a powerful part of the industry. Now, let's say in another 20-30 years, we'll be dead or too old to care. Will there be new "Icons" or will they be the same? If they're the same, then they truly are timeless characters, and they don't *need* to be retired because new generations constantly find relevance andor entertainment in their existence. You shouldn't can a long-lasting IP and fan-favourite "just because". You shouldn't run it into the ground with pointless sequels, either. Either way, I hope all of these characters are here to stay for as long as their creators wish to keep them around, and while they're still around I'll still be enjoying new characters and new ideas. There's no time like the present, and I'd say we have the best of both worlds now.
- StormTroopr, on 03/17/2008, -0/+5That last sentence sold me.
- Shaflugi, on 03/17/2008, -0/+5It's called Sonic Rush. I'd personally just like sprites with really fluid animations, myself.
- Protoss, on 03/17/2008, -0/+5Wii series as in Wii Sports, Wii Fit, etc.
- Bulletbillx, on 03/17/2008, -0/+5Sonic Advance 1-3, Rush, and Rush adventure were good. Sega needs to make a sonic like viewtiful joe or smash. 2d gameplay with 3d graphics. Unless they can find someone at sega who can make a decent in game camera.
