- ajamison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is really really ridiculous. I'm going to be talking with a professor of mine who's involved with the EFF about this one.
There's honestly no reason why it should be shut down! - za105, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll never buy another game from Vivendi; pirate, oh yes, but never will I pay for anything from Vivendi again.
Matt - flysilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why is Vivendi shutting this down now? They've known about the project for years, and not shown any interest one way or another until now, as the game nears completion. How can Vivendi hope to benefit by doing this, especially now? The people who were making KQIX were not paid, nor was the game to be sold. So money can't be an issue.
Stopping KQIX now gains absolutely nothing for Vivendi, and takes away something significant from the many who were a part of this game, from artists to programmers, voice-actors to fans.
If Vivendi shut this game down because they plan to make a sequel, they should realize a free game by fans, for fans, is hardly a threat to their marketing machine...if anything, the publicity and fanbase associated with KQIX will enhance any new material Vivendi might put forth in this vein.
Why is it large companies take the adversarial approach off the bat, rather than try a little communication and teamwork? Much more might be accomplished by working together; nobody's toes would get stepped on; the fans would be happy; games would be played; everyone wins. I like that a lot better than watching big corporations squash enthusiastic fan projects for no apparent reason. - Jontas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The war on terrorism continues right here in our own backyard! Who are the terrorists? Big heartless corporations like Vivendi, who are only interested in how much money they can get their hands on. Who are the victims? We are.
Vivendi does not care about Kings Quest, it's large fan base, or the adventure gaming community. This corporation is cruel and hostile, furthermore they will never make a penny out of me and the countless others who are hurt and disgusted at their shameful actions.
- Jon - OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you write a novel and create this great world in it, you have copyright on the world and characters you've created. It really isn't any different for a game (especially a story-based game like KQ). A lot of books, cartoons, movies, etc have fan created versions. Most companies simply ignore it. But KQIX.com made a few fatal mistakes:
1. Uses KQ in it's title. This would be a trademark violation
2. Uses the next number in the series, so if VU wants to release another KQ, they are going to number it what? How do you keep the google kits from showing the real KQ IX and the fan created KQ IX
3. Assuming VU Games would turn a blind eye and allow this to go one, investing a great deal of time and energy into the project.
Why couldn't people have simply invested the time in a brand new game, or a world based on some book that is in the public domain, etc. Why is it people who have a great deal of talent and energy don't plan thier actions ahead of time? - panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They should just do a search and replace on the entire source code: change Graham to Greg, change King's Quest to "Quest of the Kings", etc. True fans will still have the same respect for the development team and the game they produce.
- jdragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although I'm no lawyer, I firmly believe that since VU didn't act for so long, their power to shut this game down has legally ceased to exist. Keep on trucking POStudios!
- TGZRyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same exact thing that happened to the Chrono Trigger resurrection.
http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/ - t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it doesn't surprize me they waited so long... I'm sure they didn't expect the project to ever finish. then, when they checked back on it, they were scared because the game looked pretty darn cool, so they sent out a cease and desist. to me, it's pretty hilarious that a major publisher felt threatened by a renegade development team.
- robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I understand all of the legalities involved, they're protecting their material and what not. But it's just a huge slap in the face to the actual fans who are putting countless hours into this project. It's like meeting your favorite band and all the members are *****, it's gotta hurt.
- Nesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^Gooood. Let the hate flow through you.
- oldbushie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, I'm hoping we can rouse together as many people as possible to show Vivendi that this game must go on! Surely a freelance lawyer or somesuch might have some pointers...
- rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would POS roll-over so easily? US "fair use" law expressly allows this.
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0vivendi = teh suk
- ShadowWalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hello there! As I read your posts, I cannot help but remember the way that Sierra-On-Line was shuttered down by the new owners of Sierra when it was sold to Cendant. Suits; that's what I call them. People who have neither love of the games nor imagination to see possibilities and opportunities at hand unless it comes from their narrow, and limited views of how things ought to be according to their visions, and love. NO! Avarice of money and power. Power to do things to other with impunity because they simply "CAN".
That Vivendi does not wish to offer a reason for their actions, is entirely their right to do so.
It is also entirely my right to "BOYCOTT" all the games that Vivendi puts out from now on. That way we can both exercise our freedom of choice.
NO ARGUMENT
NO YELLING
NO SCREECHING
NO ATTEMPTS TO SECOND GUESS VIVENDI.
Just exercise your right to go and pick up another game from another company.
Do you really need to play "Fear"
Do you really need to play "Swat 4"
Do you really need to buy from Vivendi at all.
Please do not answer me! It is a waste of your time and mine.
Merely spread the idea, and act on it on your own conscience.
It is up to you.
We have the power if we are smart, willing, and ready to exercise it!
Your choice to make a difference!
Talk is cheap and useless................
Actions are what get things done! - nitroskanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is sad for me to see happen. I've been playing King's Quest since the first one on the IBM PCjr and I can't think of fonder memories than those playing this series. I've been following the progress of this fan game for years and to see it shut down now, after they are so close to finishing it... it's so disturbing. Sierra as a company doesn't exist anymore in my opinion. It was Sierra On-Line, Ken and Roberta sold it, and then it turned into something else. I don't consider the two of them to be the same company. Yesterday was a sad day.
- Eamon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I assume this means Space Quest 7 is going to be nixed as well....
- Angel00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its really a shame. It looked really promising too.
- ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not nescisarilly. If they were smart like AGDI was, they may have a written agreement with VU which means they can't be shut down. That's why all the Kings Quest/Quest for Glory VGA remakes can still be made. They have permission from VU to do so. Hopefuly SQ7 did the same and they'll be safe.
either way this is just so suckish. After this I may not even bother buying the upcoming Re-Release of the Kings Quest collection...mind you if they did't enhance it for WIN XP use, then I'm not going to even consider it. - ickyelf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad. I've been following KQIX for a a while. It looked really professional. I am glad that VU is reissuing the old Sierra games that I grew up with.
- Thanatosimii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is sickening. Oh If I had one wish on this earth, I would seperate sierra from Vivendi and make it its own entity again. I will not so much as touch one of the games they produce until They cease and desist.
Anyone else who thinks they have a lot of nerve should tell them so. - capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vivendi just sucks. I agree with the above posts about the source code. Just drop all of the direct kings quest references and publish the source code on the internet. Someone will pick it up where they are leaving off.
- koko_99_2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey guys! Us fans have finally organized! We're getting together a petition. Find the information here:
http://www.kqix.com/forum/index.php?topic=3003.msg122641#msg122641 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whilke law maybe on their side.. how much you think they are willing to pay to have a judge say so.. it is easy to roll over when looking at a fight with someone with bigger pockets
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting that VU is all bent out of shape about this, yet they've never made a peep about Space Quest 0.
- hummingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hopefully this won't cause a digg effect, but you can find the impressive trailer for the game at these addresses:
Small Trailer (36 mb)

Big Trailer (120 mb)

http://www.savekqix.org - kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They shut it down because they abide to the slippery slope argument that if they let KQIX be released soon someone will say they want to make Starcraft 2. VU are (unfortunely in this case) protecting their copyrights."
It is unfortunate and true, but it's not the end of it and it's not neccesarily something they will win. Copyright is not the whole of the law. Although it seems many would like to make it that way. - Fobmyxeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They shut it down because they abide to the slippery slope argument that if they let KQIX be released soon someone will say they want to make Starcraft 2. VU are (unfortunely in this case) protecting their copyrights.
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is exactly like the Chrono Trigger fan-made remake thing that Square shut down. That thing was looking absolutely amazing. Fact is that these decisions are made by idiot board of directors who probably don't even know what they're shutting down.
- Khufu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm shocked. I knew about KQ9 only three days before the bad news and I was very very happy when i see the trailer of this high-level game. But now, a stupid company wants to kill all illusions of a big number of fans.
- t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used BNETD when Warcraft III was still in beta. had a blast, too. of course, once Warcraft III was actually released, I ran out to the store and bought it immediately. I wish publishers realized that stuff like this is bad publicity.
- sludge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a big Space Quest fan, but I am sad to see this happen to the King's Quest series. As most of the others on here, King's quest was my first game on the PC and I was anticipating the ninth sequel. I hope it doesn't die out.
- ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In honour of this happening, everyone MUST download these remakes of KQ I and II:
http://www.agdinteractive.com/
I was going to post this as a DIGG but someone already had submitted it and it wasn't too popular...
either way, check these out. They are INCREDIBLE! Especially the totally reworked KQII+
Best of all, they have an agreement with VU and thus CANNOT be shut down! - meed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ever since Ken and his wife (the people that started Sierra Online) left the company, I haven't seen many games worth my attention from them. Sierra Online did create the first color IBM compatible game, now they make barbie games and etc.
- mwilke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Although i am not a big fan of Kings Quest, I have never liked VU or its Sierra group for their business practices.
- MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to law if you are the victim of some law violation you have to take measure to make it stop. If you don't, you lose the right to go to court afterward. Obviously VU was aware of the existence of this project since long ago.
A cease and desist letter has little legal value if at all, it is merely intimidation and the fan site guys gave up too easily because of fear only. They should just reopen a new site in Sweden.
Then again, ianal. - pishi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that must suck for teh people working on it...
- bitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes they should continue development, do the renaming, release it and tell vivendi to kiss their arse.
Though I really don't care, I'll never ever buy anything from vivendi from now on. Maybe if they lose enough customers and are brought to the brink of bankruptcy they just might realize how dumb such a move was. - hummingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thought I'd post the email address in case anyone wanted to contact Vivendi about this:
games.comments@vugames.com - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>> I'm sure there are many alternatives to just ending the project that could benefit both the fans and the company.
For one thing, VU could cut a check, and they'd have their next release nearly ready for release. Unfortunately, there's no law that says corporations have to be smart. - anymir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dammit, this was gonna be awesome.
- ZombieLordzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all for collecting all vendi e-mail addresses and giving those e-mails to every subscription site/porn site say I...
- z.unit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0those bastards, i knew this was going to happen. worst.company.ever
- megalo_maggas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This move by vivendi is outrageous and I am disgusted. I furthermore refuse to purchase another vivendi product in the future and do sincerely hope that the filthy executives burn in hell for their hate crimes.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finish the game, remove all Kings Quest references and then leak a Kings Quest hack patch on Bit Torrent.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0funny idea capn caveman, though the developers would have to have "no knowledge" of the patch
- flipside3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There should be NOT FOR PROFIT protections for such projects. People should be allowed to copy, share, create whatever they like as long as it is not for profit. If I create a t-shirt with mickey mouse on it and give it away, that should be fine. If I sell it for profit, then there's a problem.
- DryPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly, I can't understand how these corporations can be so out of touch with their customer base and consumers in general. You would assume that at some point on some level in the past or present they themselves were consumers. Maybe not
- Reyen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey Guys. Keep pounding out the negative letters to VU. I am an animator for KQIX and I think this game really has to be released! It was a crushing blow for the whole team but we are not giving up yet. I've played the demo for chapter 1 and I've worked on the intro and other parts of the game. It is totally amazing! Just look at the trailer posted before. Thanks for the support and keep the letters rolling! Thanks again.
