joystiq.com — Joystiq reports that the virtual console games might get upgrades. This leaves the possibility for our old favorites to have online play. Awesome!

- mattverso, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Might, maybe, possibly, pshaw.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yes, this will happen. People seem to have forgot, but there were discovered Nintendo patents (I still have the pictures on my disk, so I'm not day-dreaming) where they were mentioning modification of things such as graphics to improve old games.
I was in fact wondering what it would happen, because Nintendo even talked about it in more than interview !
Also, if nobody noticed, the story text in the Legend of Zelda is the "corrected" one from the release on the GBA and not the original 1986 "Link to save her" text -- if you ask me, it's a clear hint that Nintendo intends to clean up some of the old messy parts.
This will be interesting for RPG's, though. Having programmed some myself, tile-based engines are easy to upgarde, just change the artwork, keep it 32x32 and eveything is OK. - PhantomRogue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So wait, One article says they will, yet another says they wont. Joystiq should really make up their minds on what rumor to start.
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/13/nintendo-virtual-console-games-have-not-been-changed/ - W00DR0W, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Nintendo said they will not change the VC games with any enhancements, and judging from there track record of not giving a ***** when it comes to people asking for classic games (which is why we were forced to emulate) I believe them.

- Publictivity, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1I hope so. It's somewhat of a longshot, but Nintendo gives us what we want. haha, now this is dreaming... Create a Kart.
- VitaminK, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I think that Nintendo need to utilise this to move people back from emulation. Having the original games is great, but if they could add enhancements like online play, extra modes, improved graphics etc, then they would be offering something that the free alternatives are not. Plus Goldeneye with online play would be too awesome!
- neokyotodragon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20If Nintendo even touches the graphics I won't be happy...Why mess with a classic? The graphics they have now are the ones I grew up with and love..If I wanted better graphics I would play next-gen games...
- terrab0t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You don't get extra modes in your emulated games (that involves adding extra content), but with ZSNES (an SNES emulator) you can do online play, and the Super2xSai graphics filter does a good job of enhancing those low res images for higher res. The effect actually adds a lot to simpler 8-bit NES graphics.
Many other emulators also offer both of these. I even found a program (can't remember the name) that lets you log into a central server and find other players to game with in any network-play emulator.
@ neokyotodragon
I agree. Nintendo re-made the original Super Mario Bros 1 and 2 for Super Mario Allstars on the SNES. The graphics all went 16-bit, and they replaced most of the sounds with the Super Mario World versions, and the music was now heard through the SNES music processor. It looked and sounded "upgraded", but when I loaded up the NES emulator and played the originals I got jolt of nostalgia from the original look and sound, and the old power-up sound effect really is much cooler than the one from Super Mario World. That's probably why they used it in those "Too much fun" adds they had playing about 6 months ago. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Play GoldenEye recently? It sucks now.
- onikage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@neokyotodragon
@terrab0t
Can't you enjoy both on their own merits? The original for nostalgia, the new for... well, whatever that emotion is that drives people to buy the same football game year after year. - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2neokyotodragon -
this sort of gives you an idea of what they might mean by 'upgraded graphics'

I personally would be quite happy with a graphical update like that, but I wasn't around when the NES and SNES were so there isn't really any nostalgia value for me that is lost with a graphical update.
As long as they don't use horrible 3d pre-rendered sprites (those can easily look awful in my opinion) - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whoops, something went wrong with that first link there...
this one should work -

(look under the 'gameplay' section at the comparison screenshots)
Sure, I know you could probably work out what page I intended my link to go to but isn't it easier this way? :)
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Didn't Nintendo deny this like a week ago?
- spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Yes. They said they were going to preserve every game in its absolute original state. No new graphics, no new gameplay modes.
Then again, they may change their minds like Sony always does.

- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I guess that's kinda cool but honestly I'm happy with the games in their original form. Just give me Earthbound for #(@*'s sake you bastards.
- airencracken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10and release Mother 3 on the VC in english assholes!
- Publictivity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Toe Jam and Earl is on my can't wait list. Multiplayer goldeneye with downloadable levels and some other goodies would sell like a new console game.
- Publictivity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Games companies will always go with the safe option such as "We're not doing it", just to cover their asses and not make promises.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Unless that company is Sony.
- soccerboi00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"Mario Kart ONLINE?"
People seem to forget that Mario Kart DS is online too.- Kahnza, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Not everyone has or wants a DS though.
- oblongmouth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@ kahnza - not everyone wants a wii either. what's your point?
@soccerboi00 - I don't know if people DO forget it, just handhelds don't have the same sort of perception as their homely kin - Kahnza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8My point is that at this point the only way to play Mario Kart online is with a DS.
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Not everyone has or realizes they want a DS though."
(fixed.) - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Man you don't want a DS, you NEED a DS! It will save you from certain death.
- macatak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not all mario kart games are created equal. Super Mario Kart is my fave game ever and I find the others unplayable.
- Haon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Man I hope so for what they are charging.
- Mitchbones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9cheap system, expensive classics.
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it is worth mentioning that you can play games such as Street Fighter (whichever) online on the XBox 360. If other firms are doing it, it would be nice if Nintendo did.
- oblongmouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it would be absolutely brilliant, in fact if Goldeneye was updated (as well as Mario Kart and SFII) to include online play, then I think that would sell a machine to me & probably a few of my friends too
- mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2If they can find the source code, and they can find someone who understands the code, and someone who understands the old systems, and they think it's worth the time and money. Sure.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8^^^^^ What happens when a liberal arts major tries to understand technology.
- iamexcite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You would do at least most of it at the emulator level, not the ROM code level. People have commented that online multiplayer support is already in PC emulators... add matchmaking and networking to the VC frontend, then catch network events there and send controller info to the emulator as the second player. Same for the other end, and if you keep the games in sync (input happens on the same frames), it's really not different from having someone sit next to you and play with a classic controller. (Of course, there's the experience of real human interaction you lose out on, but why would that matter?)
Graphics are more of a stretch... apart from basic filtering, you could catch writes involving certain known tile locations (e.g. the Link sprite is at a certain location in the rom) and replace it with a high-res version. - mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Is the implication that I'm a liberal arts major? Because I have a masters in Chemistry and now am employed as a software engineer. I also work on multiple open source projects, including Amarok.
Personally I thought that meant my comment had some value, although I'm always willing to be proved wrong. Iamexcite did a good job there I thought. Although I'm not convinced his suggestion is worth Nintendo's time or money. - mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1lol, God knows what retard is digging me down today.
- vezquex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you're dugg down because you never heard of emulation, and therefore appear off your rocker when you make comments such as that.
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've been doing this with emulators for years. I'll be dugg down for sure, but what is so exiting about being charged to load an emulator on a Nintendo Wii? Legal issues? since when it bothered people ? Don't get me wrong here I love the Wii and will buy one in the next months but I won't pay for classics as I will be able to play them on my mythtvbox near my tv for free.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Well, part of it is that every emulator I have ever used had some limitation. I mean, at first they were too slow, or sound emulation only ever reached 90%. Nowadays its hard to find an emulator that plays the game at original speed, new systems play way too fast. Also, playing zelda or mario bros with a keyboard isn't really capturing the original gameplay.
Nintendo is going to make sure their games are 100% original in gameplay, speed, and sound, and I would much rather use the classic controller to play old NES games then a keyboard or some botched pathetic PC gamepad with hacked Linux support anyday. - inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Sorry but my wireless ps2 controller works #1 in linux with emulators...

- garg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There are emulators available that allow two people to play multiplayer NES, SNES etc. games online.
If Nintendo is able to do that with the VC then that would be fantastically awesome!!
Please please please! - Adrnshw6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I sure hope that they release Goldeneye with online multiplayer.
That would be worth $250 by itself.- zukeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought Rare games weren't going to be released.
- Adrnshw6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ya, I'm not sure either, but I am hearing different things from different people. Some say that that the developer own the rights to the game, in which case Rare would own it, while others say the publisher owns the rights to the game.
- ukm1728, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2depends on the contract the two struck when it was first published..
- Davidofff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nintendo absolutely MUST do this. It would propell wii sales and vc sales to infinite heights.
Imagine playing goldeneye with people online - I think it might be even more popular than counter-strike ! - TxCub420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Joystiq sucks ass and has for a good while now. I say, "The Wii might come with a PS3!" Go report on that lame rumor, you tools.
- DelSolMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If Nintendo will make their old games online they'll figure out some way to make people pay more for it. In other words, it'll be a Wii game not a virtual console download.
- YouKnowHim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OMG, ever heard of NESticle with on-line support? NOW, i think Nintendo has enough resources to make their own emulator eventually.... THEY can however port/make any software too due whatever they want via updates.
