- drafhk, on 04/09/2008, -1/+34It's the same way with Death Metal... everyone says that it makes people aggressive, but some of the most mild people I know are Death Metal afficionados. The music actually takes the aggression out of them.
- TomBolland, on 04/09/2008, -0/+29The wait for GTA IV is making me more aggressive however...
- dotlizard, on 04/09/2008, -1/+28of course they do! it's called catharsis, and it really feels good.
- DrunkenMick, on 04/09/2008, -0/+13Unless its Call of Duty 4 and i just get owned by an 11 year old from the UK. Then I'm a bit more angry then i was when i started.
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+10Always knew those years of Counter Strike were good for me
- endun, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8Well obviously killing hoes and stealing their money on GTA brings a smile to my face
- Poi159, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8Totaly agree. Really takes the stress out of ya from a long hard day at work :)
- o0joshua0o, on 04/09/2008, -0/+7In my experience, the only games that make you feel more stressed out are poorly designed ones (e.g. a platformer where you keep inexplicably falling to your death because of poor camera angles).
- k00k, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6CS:S is my anti-depressant and anti-anxiety med rolled into one.
- reekon, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6Bet this doesn't make it onto TV news.
- fragsta, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5WoW isn't the best thing to test it on though. People don't get pissed off after playing WoW because of any violence they encounter, obviously; it's because the game is so f***ing frustrating and addictive!
- kingcorran, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5And of course, we *want* people to be relaxed in the middle of death and carnage. Right?
- phunkytech, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5Funny thing my uncle who is close to 70yrs. old told me a story about when he was a kid him and his friends would play in the woods throwing rocks at each other playing war games, many would need to go see a doctor afterwards.
- goeatsmsht, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5FTA - "a sampling of 292 World of Warcraft players, ages 12-83 years" 83 yrs? I would think an 83 yr old would become violent after failing to get that "mouse" thingy to work.
I can imagine it now, "In my day, we didn't have these fancy schmancy computer games...... We'd run around and hit each other with sticks...... And we liked it!" - knetworx, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5Listening to Britney Spears makes me want to punch a baby.
- doctorfungi, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5What's better stress relief than taking it out on a street of pedestrians?
- Cerebral, on 04/09/2008, -4/+8Sorry to comment hijack but this is the dumbest article I've read which apparantly nobody that has commented thus far has read.
FTA: "This according to new research discovered by Develop Magazine, which found that a sampling of 292 World of Warcraft players, ages 12-83 years, were more likely to feel calm or tired after playing a round of the popular online game."
World of Warcraft? A whopping 292 players? So less than 1% of WOW players WERE MORE LIKELY TO FEEL CALM after playing a ROUND of WOW?
Who can take this seriously? How many of those 292 had huge raid sessions that lasted until 3:00am? Hell I'm often tired after I play COD4 after a good 12 hour work day. This proves nothing and actually seems like the one dude in your high school class that waited till the last week to start his science project and had some half-ass research/results. Buried as lame. - macjeffff, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Any critical thinkers out there? The lead researcher said: “There were actually higher levels of relaxation before and after playing the game...."
- mindvise3, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5Please. If World of Warcraft is classified as a "violent" video game, then Nine Inch Nails should be classified as "easy listening." That game has about as much violence as the Care Bears after a power nap. The reason the players get tired or relaxed after playing the game is because the gameplay is SLOW and REPETITIVE. I'm not saying people don't find it fun, but high-adrenaline action is probably not a word one would use to describe it.
That's not to say I don't agree with the premise - I think that allowing people to vent their aggression in a violent video game is cathartic and helpful, but this article doesn't prove that. It only proves what we already know - that WoW players are docile and passive. - LiquidShield, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4All I know is that after a day at work, and I finally am able to go home. All I want to do is kill people... So when I get home I fire up the ol' xbox 360 and lay down some massacre in CoD4 and I feel great... Killing other players and t-bagging them repeatedly is the best way to flush out the anger and anxiety of a hard days work... So yeah I can see how video games make you more relaxed...
- lolinyerface, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3They've obviously never been camped in Hillsbrad for hours on end.
- FecalHurler, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Won't matter. Video games are an easy scapegoat. Of course we won't mention the real reasons, like being over-worked and underpaid. No, that would mean we would have a less efficient economy.
- Maynza, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3I have always felt like this is the case, I don't know any high strung people that listen to the same music as I do.
- cphelps, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4Are you trying to tell me that having an outlet for stress will make you less stressed out and less likely to have a random outburst. This is tomfoolery.
- dudefather, on 04/09/2008, -0/+32 hours of WoW? thats barely enough time to get a group together for a dungeon never mind actually play the thing
- Incosian, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3Nine Inch Nails IS easy listening.
- IronPwnage, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3"after they have played a round of bloody fun."
I don't feel as relaxed when I lose a round online on Cod/Halo 3 though. - phunkytech, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2I would rather smoke crack and kill people for it than play the WoW. COD4 FTW.
- andrew522, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2even though I greatly anticipate GTA IV...
Heroin makes them relaxed too. - MrCobaltBlue, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2"Nothin' like the thrill of huntin' people down and killing them. BOOM HEADSHOT!" --FPS_Doug
- BigLLamasHouse, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2dude, the Care Bears are pretty gangster... just saying
- DrunkenMick, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2It just seems most of the foul-mouthed little bastards are always from the UK. Likely due to the time of day when i play, but still.
- Shatfacedpanda, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Nothing beats Army of Two after a long day, something about me screaming BOOM HEAD SHOT eases the pain.
- protogenxl, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Suck It Thompson!
- Netmonger, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3The article is specific to playing World of Warcraft which is a different experience to playing a FPS. WOW isnt all that violent, and neither the graphics, or the content, is realistic - its very clearly a fantasy world. In comparison, some of the FPS games these days are much more graphic, violent, and potentially disturbing. This study is bulls**t - you simply cant gauge the effect violent video games have on people when the only game being tested is WOW. There have been other studies which do show a link between violent FPS 'shooter' type games, and increased aggression in people.
- knetworx, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2My dad who's only in his 50s said they used to play war games with BB guns. If you didn't have one, you just learned to run fast and dodge a lot.
- emjaymj, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2You're totally right! Repeatedly killing all sorts of creatures - both humanoid and not - with swords, daggers, arrows, guns, etc, isn't violent at all. The game may not be gory or particularly graphic, but trying to say it's not at all violent is patently false.
In fact, the only thing that makes the violence in this game less obvious than in other games is that WoW uses a 3rd person POV. Doesn't make it any less violent though. - soracross, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2At least you're not waiting for Duke Nukem Forever.
- Esstee, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Green tea companies claiming that tea is the holy grail to healthy living.
Liquor companies sponsor research which states that alcohol in moderation is actually be beneficial to ones health.
The entertainment industry posts a report which discounts the notion that simulated violence is beneficial to developing minds.
Anyone else see a pattern here?
Pretty sad state of affairs to see people contorting reality to suite our needs.
Then again... this is the very same reason humanity is spiraling towards destruction. - surKaz, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2yes, I'm sure the people are thankful to us for that..
Now to kill the next person who *fall* onto my car.. Nevermind that I'm driving on the sidewalk.. - 1gunners4, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Obviously you missed South Park, where it distinctly showed the ability to crush a man's head into mush, otherwise known as 'pwning'.
- kingvik, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2Actually I was; my parents died in the Chernobyl meltdown, my dead mom had a c-section so that I could live.
- RavagesOfTime, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2So? Nobody seems to be overly upset about it. Companies make money, people are satiated. That's the way it works.
- emjaymj, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2No idea how you got dugg up for a gross misunderstanding for the way statistics works, but it really doesn't surprise me that providing an outlet for people to vent their aggression actually calms them down.
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2"hold on, my mum is calling me to suppa."
- Daz_Genetic, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2We all want there to be a definitive study to tell the politicians what we already know from experience, but a "study" of 292 people using the game World of Warcraft as your choice of a "violent" game is just plain idiotic.
Do it right, or don't bother. There is simply no scientific method involved in this study. They may as well have just went to the mall and asked 300 gamers their personal opinion. - emjaymj, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2I think stabbing people to death is a bit more violent than jumping on mushrooms. The fact that you're "rolling imaginary dice each time you attack" is also irrelevant. You mean to say that because the damage and whether or not your attack misses has an element of chance, it's not violent?! Complete BS.
You're confusing gore and realism with violence - they're not the same. - Matt174e, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1I'd question how he got the computer, unless it's a really fancy mic.
- knetworx, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Agreed--as an avid gamer, I do feel relaxed after playing violent video games, but I don't consider World of Warcraft violent at all. I'm thinking more along the lines of a stabbing spree in COD4, mowing over a bunch of peds in Saints Row, or pulling off the perfect fatality in Mortal Kombat. That's what loosens me up and calms me down.
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Same, nothing relaxes me more than a 4 hour session of de_dust2, cs_office, and surf_skyworld. The 12 year old get on my nerves tho. How can they afford a microphone?!?!
