- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -12/+81whats wrong with that? mtv makes kids drink. magazines make kids smoke cigarettes. commercials make kids eat fast food. etc.
marijuana is by far the least dangerous of each of these. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+54You're right; one marijuana joint contains more tar that one cigarette... but I haven't met anyone who smokes a pack of (20) joints a day. Have you? What do you think is worse, smoking a pack of cigs a day for a month or sharing a joint (with other people) every few days or even once a week?
By the way, not all studies are bogus. A lot of them show actual causation, such as the studies "linking" cigarettes to cancers. Correlation seems to be the case here, so you are right about this study. - furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47yes, I am claiming pot is less dangerous than fast food and cigarettes. A joint has FAR less tar than what an average smoker intakes in the same time period.
heart disease is one of the leading causes of death and has been directly linked to fast food.
pot has never killed anyone and is only illegal because of FUD like this. if the people who claim its so bad had ever tried it they would clearly see that lots of legal drugs (even caffeine) are far worse.
p.s. THC has been proven to not be physically addictive, whereas caffeine has...which should be illegal again? - Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33What if you started smoking pot before games were available, like 1972? Ever played pong on weed?
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Hmm, I've been playing video games for 15 years and I've never had the inclination to do such things.
It seems like this is a false positive to me, I mean these things aren't really related, so what's to say that video games are the only thing influencing this? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27"Recent study that I heard on the radio said that three joints were as bad as a pack of cigarettes."
Those studies vary wildly. I've read studies where the ratio is as low as 1 joint = 3 cigarettes all the way up to 1 joint = 20 cigarettes. The study you read claims it's 1 joint = 6.67 cigarettes. Even then, have you ever met anyone who smokes 20 joints in one day? My neighbor is 40+ years old and she smokes a pack a day (20 cigs). We all know smoking *anything* is bad, but people are trying to make marijuana far worse than it really is. - matrox212, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22This the stupidest conclusion I've ever heard.
- jayf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Sounds like a great promotional gimmick for the Dutch: "Pong with Bong"
- c0dek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21You know what really sucks? This means I've been getting owned by a bunch of stoners...
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25weed came from nature to lift human spirits into the clouds.
oh, and it's a universal medical treatment. weed is like duct tape. (..how did i get that idea? I must be high..) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Life is far more multifaceted than one Dr Brady assumes.
No digg. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I can vouch for that one. Ofcourse I don't smoke bud anymore, I've had my fun with it. There comes a point where you have to stop and get on with your life. I will add that I had some of the greatest times with my friends being stoned out of our minds.
- aproxia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21MTV makes me wanna smoke crack: http://tinyurl.com/qldhf
- modularsky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I second the opinions of the poster above-some of the best times of my life have been while stoned.
- mctk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Yeah, I agree. The article's conclusion did suck. But, so did the title for that matter.
This, my friends, is what's called "flamebait." Let's see. Spun title? Check. Biased news source? Check. Sore subject for main audience? Check. Let the flames begin!
Am I the only one willing to give professors from a respected university some credit? Or are we all going to shoot down there study based on a short article from an obscure video game website? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Recent study that I heard on the radio said that three joints were as bad as a pack of cigarettes. Stands to reason. Smoke is bad to take into your lungs in any form.
- Godel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Tar isn't actually the most unhealthy part of smoke, it's radioactive thorium. The Surgeon General C. Everett Koop stated that radioactivity, rather than tar, accounts for at least 90% of all smoking-related lung cancers. Marijuana does not contain thorium and is therefore not nearly as dangerous.
(See generally: Winters-TH, Franza-JR, Radioactivity in Cigarette Smoke, New England Journal of Medicine, 1982; 306(6): 364-365) - modularsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13you mean smoke...right?
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14MTV gives you AIDS.
- kevogod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11According to a U.S. researcher, Dr Robert Melamede, from the University of Colorado, smoking marijuana is less likely to cause cancer than smoking tobacco.

- DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Or maybe it's getting stoned that makes young men play violent games?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11If you're that worried about tar, you can just use a bong. But it isn't about tar, it's about getting high from THC which is why it's illegal.
- bab7880, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Wow...I've played violent video games for about 13 years now ... (Mortal Kombat era)
And i have never even been close to wanting to smoke anything
Video games do not cause people to do anything ....they are a form of entertainment ... i hate it when the media puts down video games for being violent or too realistic or whatever ... video games are no different then movies or TV ... If violent video games CAUSE teens to smoke mj then show me cold hard proof ... proof that the video games are the reason that they smoke ... not just a parallel
People need to be taught how to distinguish between real life and fiction.
VIDEO GAMES ARE ENTERTAINMENT --- no different from TV or Movies - angryredplanet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I am with furtwan1
Coming from both angles (ex pot cigarette smoker) I have found it quite easy to stop smoking pot once my mind was made up. Cigarettes are *extremely addictive* and even though I know they will shorten my life if I didn't act on it, I still find it very difficult to stay an ex-smoker. I've had to become a reclusive person so as not to come into contact with smokers and reform my entire mindset. I generally feel better for it, but man those cravings make me act badly.
Pot is worse in the short term (more tar etc) but I think that the nicotine in cigarettes is potentially far worse in the longer term. - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yet more evidence that most people in the media haven't even taken an entry level stats course.
- albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I highly doubt violent games make people smoke pot. More likely, its the other way around. The type of people who smoke pot are also the type of people who play violent video games
(not that i'm saying playing violent games is bad, because i do, but i don't smoke pot).
But most likely, these people who apparently have never seen an R-rated movie before are trying to come up with whatever excuse they can to ban violent video games. - bryant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Oh...it...all makes sense now. I sniff marijuana because I play GTA....of course!
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm a girl..but I don't really see the difference.
I play video games. But those came AFTER the pot. And they're totally unrelated. More often than not a violent life makes a person smoke pot.
Stop poverty & violence and you'll stop drug use. It's an escape. An escape from controlling parents, a ***** childhood, a bad relationship, and about a billion other things.
Now I know I'm one person but mostly what I've seen is that they're unrelated. The kids who play games all the time already have enough of an escape, and the drug addicts don't have the money for games. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9..or perhaps its the availability of depraved, violent games, and the general promotion of violence in our sicko american culture, that inevitably makes violent imagery and games so popular.
And young people have ALWAYS smoked pot....some of them anyhow....regardless of what games they like. - quangdiggity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The media makes young men write ridiculous, sensational headlines.
- o5rob5o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8actually sometimes if i smoke enough i think im in a videogame
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7And football makes young men drink beer.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Of all the young men who have raped oak trees, all of them played video games.
Therefore, video games make young men rape oak trees.
Logic! - jarcoal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i'm just waiting for all the old people to die, they're the only ones that believe this stuff, so it will perish with them.
- Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Come on... you can say that games make people violent, or that games make people smoke poi, but not both, as the two are mutually exclusive.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Carver: Quit bogarting that ***** before I frag yer ass!
Sgt. Major: Don't matter if ya do, I'll just respawn.
Carver: Damn, that's right. - Sifl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think Dr Sonya Brady is the one smoking marijuana.
- jugo23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7wow...thats bogus
- justblazed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@crythius
What? I'm not even sure what you're trying to say, but I definitely remember the ***** I do when I'm high. 'Not remembering' isn't the point at all. I could think of countless reasons to smoke weed, but that's definitely not one of them. Go smoke a blunt and we'll discuss further. - bab7880, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Did they think of the type of people who would rather play GTA vs the type of people who would choose to play Hit and Run ... i don't know but this study is very bogus and misinformed
Video games do not cause a person to sway their decision .. the difference is based on something that the people studied had already decided before the study started -- health benefit from Mary Jane from -3 to +3 both halves chose negative ... if Simpson's would have been the larger one ...this would not have been published ...
video games have no effect on the life decisions of the well informed gamer
but please ... I may be wrong ... anyone who smokes (anything) SOLELY b/c of video games ... please inform me of my wrong opinion - Toshibi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think a better way of looking at this would be to see how many copies of a game were sold, how many violent crimes have been commited in the same time, the percentage of people that smoke pot and then do some math.
People just want to blame their actions on something else. "I do this because of this." Might as well scream "Satan made me do it!" I love violent video games. Haven't smoked pot once since I was 16 (now 26 and only smoked it twice then) and I have never been to jail. It's people's decisions that we should be looking at carefully....and not trying to put the blame where it's not deserved. - jmechy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6University of California covers 10 campuses, 3 national labs and one law school. Just saying UC doesn't tell people much.
Sonya Brady is from UCSF (University of California, San Fransisco) for those that are curious. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4e-successful? Is that short for success in a way that doesn't matter in the real world? If so then I'm e-successful at many things too.
- thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I bet you could, too, with BF2 load times :(
- bejitunksu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was just shooting covanants and all, and, well, you see, the tree, IT CAME ON TO ME, I SWEAR!
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is so rediculous. How can they imagine that playing games causes marijuana use in males? Looks like this is going to get an 'inaccurate'
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I love these studies... Our own government here in the US recruits young men at high schools and colleges to goto Iraq and kill people with REAL guns and no one cares. In fact, it's looked to be a positive thing. Now some other young men decide to stay home, smoke some pot and play a video game and they're supposedly dangerous? They're a major probelm in our society? WTF? Americans have to get a ***** grip on reality.
- ctoph0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4haha i thought i was mario once when i was doing mescaline (peyote)
- gcauthon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sonya is a student and Karen is her advisor. Make sense now? This was a school project that was more than likely focused on the mechanics of a psychological study as opposed to the legitimacy of the outcome. Surely, this paper will not stand up to peer review.
