- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+103It's a little known fact that Candyland sparked the Vietnam war.
- andydumi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+63Don't even get me started on Chutes and Ladders...
That said what about Clue? Its all about murdering people with a variety of tools and getting away with it. Wheres the outrage over that? - Ishywoo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+57I totally agree with this article, 100%. Like others have said, what JT and A-holes like him don't realize is that most gamers agree that a 5 year old should not be playing GTA, our problem is that you want to ban the games entirely. The video game industry is one of the top media industries...We are talking BILLIONS of dollars gamers spend every year..If games really caused violence, shootings like Columbine and VTech would not be once in a while, they would be everyday events, and 65% of the population would be dead or in jail.
- yeshuu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+50there have been over 300 world war 2 games, and you want to tell me games cause violence??
- 4degrees, on 10/11/2007, -0/+45i got punched in the face when I won at connect 4 once... haven't played since.
- toxicgonzo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44Video games don't make people violent, lag does
< / bash.org > - o0joshua0o, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28Art is an expression of human experience. Violence is part of human experience. Video games are art.
- CatsAreGods, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24Diabetes and obesity!
- theNazz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22We all know that violence did not exist in the world before TV, radio, movies, and video games.
The world was perfectly peaceful and everything was paradise before TV, radio, movies, and video games came along tainted our purity! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20lag is so 1999.
- luvkit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Dugg... because the description of the article was actually a description of the article.
No "Title says it all" or copy-paste of the first paragraph. - Takfam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I dunno. If I see one more WWII game, I may try to beat some creativity into game producers.
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16It's just funny because history has already shown that anytime something new comes out, the old conservative guard will try to bash it to the ground. In 50 years, it'll be some new form of media that will be the reason why society is failing. Comic books, TV, Movies, Music, now video games.
Jack Thompson is a simpleton who just wants a crusade to parade around so that he can die with a legacy (I'm Jack Thompson and I'm the person who was at the forefront of the war against video games!) Any rational minded person with a shred of education at the university level knows that attributing one "cause" to a very complex problem is the absolute worst way to do research. There is NEVER one reason why something as complex as human behavior goes wrong. It is always a confluence of reasons. If Jack Thompson really wanted to explore violence in America, he'd be talking about socio-economic class warfare, the rise of the instant gratification society, pumping our kids full of behavior-altering drugs, diets full of strange chemicals that never existed 50 years ago...in short, many different variables out there that contribute to "violence". Of course, that's way too many variables, so Jack Thompson resorts to the simplest and most easy one he can find and one where if he totally destroyed, he'd have no stake in so it wouldn't matter to him.
Be glad that Jack Thompson is the exception and not the rule. - patsfan456, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18I killed a man two years ago and am now creating my own game. This article is truthful.
- Sparkster185, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Wait, so you're trying to tell me art imitates life?
- lechatron, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14serial killer == artist?
The human body is his canvas. - korupture, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12NUKE THE BASTARDS.
- TalkingBanana, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9All media is a representation of the world it came from. It is common sense that people will create things based on what they take in.

- echonull, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9@ ATLANTA287
I've been playing variously violent games for about the past 20 years, have slain thousands of men, beasts, and gods in simulation. And yet, I've never physically hurt anyone.
.... Your post, and the unwarranted assault it constitutes against the English language, makes me want very much to hurt you, however. You, Mr. Atlanta, need to kindly shut your mouth, get your ass behind a school desk and your face in a book. YESTERDAY. - 4degrees, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11serial killer == artist?
- GameMogul, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8In Soviet Russia, violence causes games.
- Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7ART. . . IMITATES. . . LIFE
- tonaros, on 11/14/2007, -2/+8The problem isn't that the games are too realistic in their portrayal of violence, but that they aren't realistic enough. Games are a way to satisfy fantasies, and if we could create a perfect virtual reality for people to let their anger out in, they'd be a lot better off psychologically.
- Stormflux, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I'm not ordinarily a grammar nazi, but give me a break! That was unreadable. Sentences are your friend.
- 4degrees, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7modem monkeys still get lagged out... :-P
- Amoeba16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah, that was awesome.
Dinosaurs were our pets, and it never rained. - PhonicUK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I want to make a game about killing Jack Thompson, and then say that god told me to do it.
- withoutashovel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5My teacher said something similar to this once. I thought it was the greatest thing i've ever heard. It was just a matter of time before someone blogged and dugg it.
- VeganG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The problem isn't that the gaming community responds to him (the rebuttals are perfectly valid)... The problem is that they only respond amongst themselves, while he goes on TV and speaks to mainstream America and to politicians.
I know it's easy to say, "Just ignore him and he'll go away, anyone can see that he's nuts," but that's not necessarily true. You give the people who listen to him too much credit. It wouldn't be the first time someone was able to mold the world the way they saw fit, due to no one saying anything about it early on. - echonull, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4To be fair, we tried to ignore him for a LONG time. Didn't work.
There is in fact such a thing as bad publicity these days. VeganG's right -- he retains more credibility and influence with the press and population than anyone affiliated with video gaming. THAT needs to be fixed.
.... I mean, "school shooting expert"? REALLY!?! Come ON! - strafefire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I find it IRONIC that Joe Liebermann, the man who fought against violent videogames for most of the 90s and early 2000s,..
Who said that violent games create violent people...
Who said that all video games should not exist...
Told the world last week that we should BOMB IRAN, and murder people on a massive scale!
Maybe he should play some ***** starcraft...that might sedate him.
Who knows, he might actually like it.
So much for that violent video games cause violent behavior crap... - funkytommyman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And before video games were invented, the humans lived together peacefully and danced about in daisy fields holding hands.
- smacksaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Video games are a reflection of our society, true. But for some people, it amps them up.
I doubt real Compton gangbangers listen to The Carpenters to get amped up to go do a drive-by, just as I doubt NWA told them to do it. - xxTazxx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Also think about it, most teenagers will have at least one or two highly violent games, so are teenagers that got nuts, therefore its like saying teenagers that go on a killing spree all breathe air, so lets stop oxygen once and for all!
- dodus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I was almost to the bottom before I saw it, I was actually starting to despair that it wasn't going to happen.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I think it would be worse if people ignored him, than argued valid counter attacks against him.
He'd still get attention from mindless parents, and over religious fanatics that agree with him. Should I ignore someone just because I personally know what they're saying is wrong? Absolutely not, because then some other dumb ass will follow what he says without getting his/her facts straight. - swordphish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Wow. So simple, yet so cunningly brilliant - "Violence Causes Games" - it was there all this time - these three words sum up perfectly the many things people have been trying to explain. Not only does violence cause games, violence is just as guilty as love, humor, suspense, mystery, and many others in inspiring games, movies, music, poetry, literature, sculpture, etc., etc. So how can anybody try to put a stop to the very same elements that modern "works of art" are made of - Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, etc., etc.? Would Jack Thompson have Romeo and Juliet pulled from classrooms because it promotes underage sex, murder, and suicide? Sherlock Holmes because it refers to drug use? Frankenstein because it promotes unethical medical practices?
Want to know who's really screwing this world up? It's the people that have even a tiny bit of power - the "somebodies" (e.g., Jack Thompson) who use their power to promote agendas based on their own personal beliefs and personal gain. Eventually you have a system that looks like a jumbled up mess while none of the important issues have even been addressed. In this particular case, it's up to parents to raise their children properly - it's not up to the "somebodies" to try to force the hand of others. Besides, a person as old as Jack Thompson has absolutely no business in anything even remotely related to video games. - PhonicUK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I thought recycling was good for the environment?
- Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Buried you because that comment is baseless and stupid.
- TalkingBanana, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7@ yeshuu
Yes, there are WAYYY to many ww2 games on the market, although I'm worried more about the amount of games that are going to be made based on the "war" in the Middle East. - dodus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Prosecuted for murder, IDK, but a whole *****-ton of disgruntled droogs hit the streets and kicked enough old hobos' asses that they banned the movie in England.
- FatBird19, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Wow. Suprisingly true now that I think about it. It only makes sense that our entertainment is always a product of our society. duh.
- gregdogum, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@ yeshuu
But without any world wars, I'm sure we wouldn't have 300 WW1&2 games. Plus the violence as the article states is motivation for the games and once they are successful you can and should expect sequels because of the fact that companies know they can bank money off of it. At that point once you're passed the 2, 3 World War games, its all about the money. - willgonz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4If we acted out the video games we play, then back in the 80's we would have been running around eating pellets and ghosts would be chasing us.
- mako, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think Jack Thompson causes violence and violent behavior. Every time I hear his name I want to strangle someone. Mainly him. I think we should write our representatives to create a law that would limit exposure to Jack Tompson or his rhetoric and prevent minors from being exposed at all. His crap makes me more more likely to act violently than GTA.
- echonull, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6@ jonlatane "Um, how can 65% of the population be dead or in jail? "
This is soundly founded on the well-known fact that 83.9% of all statistics are made up on the spot. - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why stop at oxygen? I want nitrogen banned, too!
- noerrorsfound, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I haven't played Manhunt, but you should try a game called Postal 2.
