- Slashered, on 07/23/2008, -1/+33I don't understand this decision at all. From what I saw, the gaming videos on Stage6 (Vimeo) is one of the key reasons why the site got so popular in the first place. The ability to watch crazy frag highlight reels and speedruns in HD streaming was quite something and most gamers embraced the site. Citing a lack of "creative expression", I don't think the Vimeo staff truly realizes how much work goes into some videos/movies. They say they won't be deleting true Machinima projects but I have a feeling the line will become misconstrued by the admins and good videos will be taken down anyway. Furthermore, what's the big deal with videos that may have less 'artistic expression' than others, and how do you gauge such a thing? The difference between the Picasso painting and the picture my four year old cousin drew is still in the eye of the beholder. 100 million hits for LOLCATS anyone?
Out of the remaining sites, seemingly WeGame.com and GameVee.com, I like WeGame's design better and the site's seemingly stronger focus on PC games. - kagebutsu, on 07/24/2008, -4/+32Way to ***** suck vimeo.
- nanajeebus, on 07/24/2008, -1/+28it's beautiful ಥ_ಥ
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -3/+27So the ONLY reason people used vimeo has been banned?
LOGIC! WE HAZ IT! - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -5/+25are there any places left to go?
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -2/+19http://www.wegame.com seems like a good, gaming-only alternative.
The CNET author mentions it in the article itself (for those who did not read it). - ig33k010011, on 07/23/2008, -6/+21People are starting to go to GameVee.com. they do HD just like Vimeo but its only for gamers. seems like the best match....
Here's an HD sample from GameVee: http://www.gamevee.com/viewVideo/Diablo_III/PC/Dia ... - proficient, on 07/24/2008, -0/+15ಠ_ಠ
- n3tfury, on 07/24/2008, -1/+14i miss stage6 :/
- hugolp, on 07/24/2008, -1/+12http://beta.vreel.net/ I discovered it yesterday, and uses xvid like stage6.
- LOLPROFIT, on 07/23/2008, -4/+13BUT i want to show the n00bs my 1337 skillz!
- mikeprasad, on 07/24/2008, -6/+14Dude, just use WeGame, they rock.
- Totz83, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Vreel.net has a gaming section
http://beta.vreel.net/index.php?q=channels&id=73 - peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -3/+10Guys, Vimeo isn't Stage6 & never was. And they dont want it to become another one or a youtube, full of dip ***** posting retarded videos & comments. Every video site doesnt have to be a free for all place to upload anything & everything.
Now I do think they're a bit snobby over there, but its their site & their intentions are clear. If you dont shoot & edit it yourself (and no, screen grabs dont count), then don't post it. Im sorry, but there's nothing creative about a screen grab of your fastest time on Sega's Out Run. - Slayercio, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7does gamevee have higher quality than wegame?
- otros, on 07/24/2008, -2/+8RTFA?
- WhoDoneIt, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Vimeo also banned a real estate agent friend of mine for putting up personal real estate video blogs on his site. These weren't listings or advertising, these were just personal reflections of the market around him and his town. The funny part was, it was all in part of an Ubertor package he was told he had.
Ubertor is a company that helps realtors create engaging websites. This was supposed to be a package deal with Vimeo.
The agent sent out an email to them explaining the dilemma and they wrote back and apologized and put up a few of his past videos, but not all of them.
Bite me Vimeo. - inactive, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5good stuff! Spread the word.
- Murdats, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6why would you use a low res game that most hardcore gamers have an intrinsic dislike of to display the HD capabilities of a game video service?
- BugMeNot2, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5GameVee does have higher resolution video than WeGame, but WeGame upped their video quality a couple days ago. It's higher than YouTube quality
Hopefully WeGame will up their quality and resolution to meet or exceed GameVee's.
I'll stick with WeGame, though, as I prefer their site design and community. - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -2/+6But Alex and Kevin told me go there.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -8/+12Gamevee fanboy links to gamevee in Digg comment, gamevee continues sucking ass regardless.
- aglarang, on 07/23/2008, -3/+7there is a good discussion going on at Something aweful.com..there are some suggestions there.

- sadpoti, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5I support vimeo's decision. I go there for creative videos that have thought and time put into them and I for one don't want it to turn into the cesspool that youtube is.
- vegx, on 07/24/2008, -2/+6Based on the amount of Guitar Hero runs on Youtube, I can see where they're coming from.
- chaos7, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5i love that face
- honeymustardn, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Enjoy your 10 minute time limit
- peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I just love comment popups on my damn video timeline, distracting viewers.
Also, Viddler = No HD. - jwloh, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Vimeo truly rocks as a platform to showcase creativity amongst the video content that people create, and not some crappy home-made video that makes its way to YouTube. I support their enforcement of restricting such videos from being uploaded. I'm not saying that these gaming videos degrade the content that Vimeo currently hosts, but it's not what the community is built up for. Vimeo is the video version of Flickr, and not it should not turn out to be the Photobucket for video content. That's where Youtube comes in.
- dakin, on 07/23/2008, -11/+14GameVee. That's where they will go...
- shibbzz, on 07/24/2008, -3/+6ya, gamevee does HD. wegame is basically youtube quality...
- michaelphw, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4Ah Machinima is safe.. least that's something.
- topbob, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3***** *****.
The internet has failed me again. - PsYchOsIs, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3That doesn't really work in a space like this.
- boombye, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Exactly. That is the whole purpose of the site, and the front page used to say as much. It's not for stupid video blogging or what someone did in a game. That's what other sites are for.
- agent42, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3noobflicks.com has been doing x264 HD for almost a year. Old.
- kaniz, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3It's their site, and they can say what kind of content, users and community they wish to build. Just because its, there, you can sign up, and upload - does not mean they need to carter to everyone.
I used to run a dial-up BBS way-back when. Initially, I had the catch-all BBS : I had games, forums, files - and tried to do the "please everyone with everything", and aimed for quantity over quality. As I matured as a sysadmin, and my BBS matured - I decided to start shifting the focus. I wanted to push for high-quality forums where users could discuss ideas about programming, technology, security, etc.
Initially, I tried putting a "must have X posts per Y days" to play the games on my BBS. While this increased the traffic to the forums, it created too many "Hey, whats up?" posts as people tried to pad their ratio to get to the games. So, I simply removed all of the door games from my BBS.
The end result: Less users, less traffic, but higher quality traffic. Sure, I lost the users who simply wanted to log on, play games then log off - but those are not the users I wanted anyways. They were simply eating up resources and preventing the users I wanted from being able to access my system.
Vimeo putting a ban onto game video clips seems to be a similar thing : They don't want to become a dump-site for gaming clips, its not the user base they want, its not the community they want. Don't like it? then find another video sharing site that DOES want you. - hexydes, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Vimeo has a huge following for the HDV camcorder crowd as well.
- BugMeNot2, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Xfire.com has some really nice quality video, too. I watched some 1680x1050 Age of Conan videos and the quality was insane. It was almost as if the game was playing on my computer. The video played almost in real-time, too, on my 150 KB/s connection.
- Vektuz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2There doesn't appear to be any way to download original video (AVI) off GameVee
Therefore it sucks. - Fafnir43, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2How about if you're taking video of the game and adding witty commentary over the top? How about if you're doing a speedrun? How about if you're posting Garry's Mod footage? (To answer your question: these are all banned.)
Granted it's not the Mona Lisa, but it's better than most of the ***** up there. - aenima987, on 07/24/2008, -3/+5WeGame?
- Vektuz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2gamevee doesn't allow downloads of the original like vimeo did...
- peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2"Granted it's not the Mona Lisa, but it's better than most of the ***** up there."
It doesnt matter if you & I think its better. You cant judge this kind of thing on merit. Its either all or nothing.
Again, this is their rules to their site, so they can run it how they see fit. Its not like their arent plenty of places to host this sorta stuff. I think people are pissed mostly because its free & offers HD uploads. But we dont pay for their servers, they do. - FLarsen, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2`ಠvಠ/´
- Fragalishus, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2I'll second that. Damn good quality at noobflicks. Only site that does proper full screen, too.
- AlfKayda, on 07/23/2008, -4/+6I prefer WeGame. The recording is much more convenient.
- Vektuz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2That's nice but you can't download the original (AVI or WMV for example) like you could with stage6 or vimeo, making gamevee completely useless.
Their "HQ" video player also noticably lags on this dual core when played full screen, something that a downloaded AVI, even 1600x1200, does not do. (Another good reason to support downloading).
So they have an excellent player but who cares, you can't download it and view it on your media machine so what's the point... -
