- manicdvln, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I always find it amusing that the word "gimmick" is slapped on Nintendo innovations in gaming while companies like Microsoft and Sony who ACTUALLY ADD gimmicks that have nothing to do with gaming such as MEDIA functions like music/video play.
Sorry but there is more people using the PSP as a media player instead of a portable gaming console. PS2 adding DVD playing functionality... isn't that a gimmick? XBOX 360 adding Media Center extension from a PC... isn't that a gimmick?
Oh noooo, those are features that immerse you in gaming, right? The company that tries to improve or innovate gaming is not a "gimmick". A "gimmick" is adding features that have nothing to do with gaming. - 1ivewire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's funny is that all those people who used to move their controller to help Mario jump in the original Super Mario Bros. will finally be able to put that wasted movement to use.
- Thujone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2our crazy island friends may be on to something!
- grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look People. You have to have a high respect for Nintendo. They have been a dedicated gaming company since 1889 , that's 1889 not 1989.
Moreover they've made many risks in developing technology, - power-pad, light guns, power-glove, gameboy, virtual boy, DS, nintendo 64 controller, etc...
Some failed horribly, some completely changed the market, but the important thing is that they tried to develop new ways to entertain us. This is much more than you can say for Microsoft who has admittedly and repeatedly waited for others companies to experience the financial pains of innovation and then copied them when there was a proven market - DOS, Windows, Xbox etc. Sony has been nearly as bad w/ memory sticks and root kits , these companies will simply never take the risks Nintendo is willing to.
Yes, Nintendo is after money too, but its pretty apparent that they also have an interest in innovation and fun.
Yes, Nintendo 64 shouldn't have used cartridges, Yes, the gamecube sucked,
but don't you like new gadgets and games, wouldn't you like to play some video games with your girlfriend every once in awhile ?
If you embrace your inner geek alittle more than your inner CEO - show Nintendo some love. - beervolcano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not at all a Nintendo fanboy, but I hope that this video makes all those skeptics out there realize that the people at Nintendo know what they're doing. It really started to hit home for me when they said something to the affect of "would you rather see the character in the game sweat, or have a whole new type of game play experience?"
I think that if the price is right, this could end up being Nintendo's big comeback into the home console market. +digg - GlitchEnzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Moreover they've made many risks in developing technology, - power-pad, light guns, power-glove ..."
The power glove was made by Mattel, not Nintendo. - haba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very cool, but I have 3 words for Nintendo:
Carpal Tunnel Lawsuit - Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, pir2! Try this:

Happy watching! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jonshipman, you're wrong, it's a mockup.. it's buy someone called Bider
"10 short clips of how the Nintendo Revolution controller might work.
Creater: Bider"
Proving that Nintendo did not make this, it's not of a high enough kalibre in my opinion.
Jon what is your source buddy? Or did you just make it up..? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Huh, I am the only one that thinks this is just a half ass fan mock up? No digg"
For cryin out ****in' loud
Are we all a bunch of handicaps in here or what?
This IS a mock-up, and was never represented to be anything else! Nobody is saying this is official stuff(except that dumbass half-way down the page).
The video was intended to show people with little or no imagination what games might be like on the Revolution, and I think it does a pretty damn good job of it. - eliomar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1to ilyag: Its amazing how many do not see the FUTURE. I belive that its time they start introducing something new. Buttons are just not cutting it. What do you want, Lazy people in thie sofas playing videogames, or a game where you can take a physical action.
I'm tiered of the SAME. I want the DIFFERENT. Sometimes it just helps to be different and think different. thats what they are trying to do here, but many people do'nt see that. They want us to get off our LAZY ASS and work for the game we like.
I support innovation. I support DIFFERENT. thats why i support thier controller. - Crispyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"while clearly you can create some fun and unique games to take advantage of the controller i can't see how it can be effective in many POPULAR current genres such as sports, racing, and FPS."
GOOD. These stale genres are part of why gaming is so inaccesable to a mainstream audience. My mother cannot play video games. She's never developed the highly sophisticated hand-eye coordination required. Plus, nearly all games have infantile subject matter, or are full of violence or sports or plenty of other things she has no interest in.
However, the revolution will let her immediately and intuitively interact with things on a screen. We don't even know what these 'games' will be like yet, but my mother will be able to pick one up and play it immediately. When my mother can play video games, then that truly will be a revolution. - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""Since the controller has a trigger on the bottom, that means gun games are gonna be point-and-shoot with the controller. Awesome."
You've never played a light-gun game? What the *****? At least those peripherals have a SIGHT for you to AIM with. This remote control-shaped controller is just a stick. You will get no accuracy AT ALL."
I can see you haven't played a light gun game in a while. Noone really uses the sights, ever tried playing Time Crisis or Point Blank in the arcade and trying to look down the sights? You don't do it, you point and shoot. Funnily enough, I can shoot HIGHLY accurately and I've never tried to use the sights on those things.
As a control for shooting games, I see no problems with the design of the controller, all it takes is a little getting used to.
Oh, and something I've been meaning to say about this controller, finally, a death to the dreaded Nintendo Thumb (tm). Long live Nintendo Wrist (tm)
This may be the first Big N console I'm going to buy that hasn't caused me to tape up my thumbs after a few days because of the pain. But that doesn't stop me with buying them, a little pain for a lot of pleasure. - macgabriel87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sexy. beautiful. awesome. coolness. killer. Nintendo.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank god ninento is trying something new. Hopefully this thing will not only work as advertised (remember the power glove?) but that the novelty will not wear off. That being said, I have faith in them.
We're getting tired of sony and microsoft's approaches which aren't even about the games anymore. Each one is betting that its disc format (Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD) comes out victorious. Part of the retail price you pay for both those systems is to cover their research and development of those standards. Glad Nintendo is not involved in that mess. - bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This looks brilliant. Like it's namesake gaming system, a "revolution". I have Xbox and PS2 both, but I'll wait for the Nintendo instead of buying the new versions from Sony and MS.
- thecoolestcow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my gosh that's amaazzing. sooo sweet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Since the controller has a trigger on the bottom, that means gun games are gonna be point-and-shoot with the controller. Awesome."
You've never played a light-gun game? What the *****? At least those peripherals have a SIGHT for you to AIM with. This remote control-shaped controller is just a stick. You will get no accuracy AT ALL. - JaceFuse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would like to make a few counterpoints to some of the other replies I have seen.
Some have called this a gimmick. To that I would say, absolutely. The DS has a gimmick, too. DS, so it seems, stands for dominating system.
The Revolution is supposedly aiming at on-line play. I can see simple games such as "table tennis" suddenly becoming fun, not to mention new and odd ideas such as "dirt bike jousting".
We must also not forget that this will slap down into a "Wave bird Like" controller. It's the "Like" part we're not paying a whole lot of attention to. Nintendo themselves has told us that we haven't seen everything the controller has to offer. This "Wave bird Like" shell might just be the controller needed to draw in all of the mainstream titles.
I'll end all with one final thought. Even if the revolution is only "slightly more than twice" the power of a Gamecube, it's not exactly as if the Gamecube is a slouch. Titles for the 360 have an improvement over the original XBox, but would I go as far as to say more than twice as good? Hardly. While graphically speaking the the PS3 and 360 may have an edge, I'm not yet convinced it will be enough of one to make a world of difference. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what this will do to my wrists.
- JOfDam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is going to take some getting used to...
still very very cool. - TehSuper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep. Swinging swords with the controller is going to rock.
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Download location:
http://files.filefront.com/The_Rev_lowmv/;4457504;;/fileinfo.html - DrSquanto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that Nintendo might be performing some viral marketing here. But then again I could be totally wrong. still, that is what viral marketing as all about.
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is why i value gameplay over graphics.
- sabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is friggin awesome..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY
something that im actually looking forward too
a true next gen gaming console - Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This new controller is the next natural step to more interactive and immersive gaming and im glad and not surprised it's Nintendo leading the way. But I cant imagine this particular controller would fare well with all types of games. Doesnt matter because Nintendo already has my money.
- Safe97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eh
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Edit: How the Revolution MIGHT work
It's amazing how many people failed to see that word.
It's a fan-made mockup. OBVIOUSLY. Of all the things in that video, I highly doubt there's going to be some kind of laser pointer cursor on the screen at all times. - bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just hope the entire Revolution isn't just all about the controller. It's a nice, but it could potentially be "gimmicky" where gamers would tire of 20 games where you swing the controller like it was a sword/golf club/bo stick/etc.
I do like how you can use the controller sideways like a steering wheel. I assume the controller can be used sideways like a classic nintendo controller? ie the ergonomics of the dpad and buttons are spaced close enough to the edge to be gripped like a regular controller?
I wonder if you can hold it like a stick, and thus it is now a control yoke for an airplane. Yep, Nintendo's taking a totally different angle, ie not processing power & polygon count & online play, etc. Best of luck. - MyBotPiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Yep, Nintendo's taking a totally different angle, ie not processing power & polygon count & online play, etc. Best of luck.
No online play? I thought that they had big plans for online play with their free gaming serivce that the have created. At the moment it's only the DS that uses it though, but surely revolution will be able to connect to it as well. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The stabbing motion with the sword was by far the coolest one in my mind.
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The F-Zero part was the best of them all - I had never though of how you could just hold the controller like a steering wheel.
This should also have an effect on platforms. Instead of just guessing, suppose you could point to where you want to land and push the "jump" button? Yeah, it would take the fun out of some games, but for others it would be more about timing and puzzle solving than twitch reactions (and therefore would get more play out of my lovely wife).
Interesting. I was planning on getting a Revolution anyway, but this might just cement the deal. - EvolvedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Spencerocks: Just because it says Bider under "Creator" does not mean that the uploader filled that in on the sense of being the actual creator, but as the uploader credits. In reality, it could very well be a leaked video only shown to developers. The leaker in this case would be Bider.
So jonshipman could be correct, though I also doubt it is from Nintendo anyways. But you never know. - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First of all, nobody said that this is the real revolution... It's just(approximately) how it will work.
And to ilyag: Haven't you ever been to an arcade? Most of the games at arcade require a bunch of physical movement, and even the joysticks require a lot more work than a normal console controller... But do people get tired there? Maybe after a long time, but I could easily spend 3-4 hours at an arcade without getting too tired. - Shredderx1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome!
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome...But I can see people breaking those controlers left and right...launching them into their TV's trying to throw Links boomerang.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will be so awesome to play as Link and be able to move his sword anyway you want to. This will introduce a new way of gaming.. but they have to pull it off first of course (see like a zelda game in 3 years). But I'm a Nintendo fanboy at heart so I really hope they make the coolest system around.
- garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if the steering wheel part is how it will actually be..
- bontux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This controller is actually pretty natural when you think about it. I mean how many of us turned or lifted our controllers the way we wanted to go when playing a game. I know I did.
- LynchMOB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will be the next console I buy for sure. And since we already have a cube and the Rev will play those games its a no brainer.
- manicdvln, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems people think that the revolution controller will need large movements from the arm, when actually it will rely mostly on the movement of the wrists.
When you control a mouse, you move your entire arm?? No, you just use the wrist. I am pretty sure freestyle controller will have movement speed calibration. Faster you swing with your wrists, bigger the swing in the game just like a mouse. - rtfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What makes people take it personally that Nintendo tries doing something different? As if they hadn't been trying that all along...
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thank god its not that damn hl vid with that mouse, jesus
- orpheum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is going to be awesome. I'm glad I'm not getting an Xbox 360 or PS3.
- garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It says:
"10 short clips of how the Nintendo Revolution controller might work"
I don't think the steering wheel is very accurate. - canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet!
- jonshipman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1not a fan mock up - this video is exactly what devs were shown by Nintendo behind closed doors. Nintendo was showing off the sensitivity and how fighting games and action games could be payed with it. Nintendo did have a playable Metroid prime along with the video.
- Addaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since the controller has a trigger on the bottom, that means gun games are gonna be point-and-shoot with the controller. Awesome.
