- Fhwqhgads, on 10/10/2007, -0/+41I bet the RIAA will blame piracy for this.
- euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Yeah, but porn will not only dwarf both of them combined, it will gag them, tie them up, and force them to toss its salad.
- yomamaisfat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I can't wait to call the former MTV to request clips of GTA stunts.
- ArchonSG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Worst, the RIAA together with the MPAA gets their dirty hands into the gaming industry, after all, its the logical thing to do since gaming is a convergence of both sound and visual entertainment. Games like the coming Mass Effect and the more recent Bioshock are more like inter-active movies and are a heck lot more entertaining then most of the stuff at the movies.
- SSCrow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I doubt it.
Its cool that Gaming is becoming more popular.
But EVERYONE, listens to music.
Not everyone plays Video games. - Witchboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Game developers to evil music execs: "BOOM HEADSHOT!"
- swanny89, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Depends on how you determine popularity: in dollars or product.
- kweee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6But wait, isn't there music in videogames? So won't they be equal??? I'm confused! I blame piracy!
- Azimuth1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7This doesn't really mean anything. An album costs a quarter of what a game costs. A download of a single costs about 2% of what a game costs. Not to mention the fact that you also have to buy a multiple hundred pound/dollar/euro console to play games on. Games aren't more popular than music. More music is sold. Games just make more money because they're more expensive.
- justice7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Here's a tip .. stop making crap music ... and quit making me look 'underground' to find anything worthwhile.
The same here goes for movies, especially the Horror Genre.. they could really learn something from the video game suvival-horror developers.. understand how to make something scary, play Doom3. - Sk8SkaNJ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Seriously, when most people think of the music industry they think of big labels and gigantic tours. There are tons of small touring bands who put out their own records and play basement shows.
- tyywebb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What great news! I sure do enjoy my video gaming!
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8hhmmm... that's weird. My radio always lets me choose the station, it never forces me to listen to anything.... maybe mine's just special...
- Haohmaru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The MPAA will start trying to sue the gaming industry for producing it's own movies.
That's so stupid I bet they'll do it. - Shaflugi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Not to mention the fact that you also have to buy a multiple hundred pound/dollar/euro console to play games on."
Most companies lose money on that part. - bilgates, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I wonder if gaming companies will become a lobbying force.
- an10ae, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This is idiotic.
Without music, there is no gaming and music "sales" are not music. The popularity between the two cannot be compared. Music is universal. - Sithseth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As long as video games don't become corrupted and morally destroyed like the Music industry, I'm glad this will happen. But, I already see it happening with this copy protection *****, like on Bioshock. I hope us, the self proclaimed "intelligent" group of the free market will deny major companies like EA, and Ubisoft (just to name a few) from destroying this awesome, and unique market.
But, then again, if video games become as horrid as Movies, and Music are today, there will always be books... I hope... - diggrim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2while rather harsh, he was describing the fact that most radio stations are owned by record companies, and their only purpose is to sell more of the latest songs...ergo we have the new Brit-Paris-Kelly-Whatever song played 5x an hour rather than what we want to hear. But I agree we do have a choice...I just change channels more often than not
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2actually, besides the radio, not EVERYONE listens to music. because the radio is filled with garbage, and finding good music is hard.
- laurentlasalle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Video gaming to be twice as big as PROSTITUTION by 2011; now THAT would be a bold statement...
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3"twice as big as music" should be "twice as big as traditional music sales, not including merch and other booming new paradigms."
Music is arguably bigger than ever, and still a more far reaching media than gaming. By 2011, there will be plenty of successful ways to make money off of music and its surrounding content, even if actual music recordings are all free (not likely that'll happen though) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The music business is on it's arse as it is..
- frsrblch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Just wait for them to make a VGAA and start suing everybody.
- GMane, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well... If Ubisoft PC games are any indication they won't.
- zeptobyte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well the problem is, they did play Doom 3. But instead of seeing what it did right, they just saw the popularity, and decided to make a (bad, like usual) movie based on it.
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you say Doom 3 didn't scare you at all the first time you played through you're lying or didn't play at night with the lights off.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes, but I imagine paying all those programers, level designers, story writers, cg artists, concept artists, marketting, PR, general staff, then paying the various licences involved (the engine you use, the console licences etc) might end up costing more then giving some talentless hack some recording time which he has to pay for, then paying marketting and PR.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2actually, I disagree. My girlfriend's mother actually *doesnt* listen to music. ever. She says she does not like music.
It baffles me. I get your point, so I dugg it up, but I don't think it's a valid argument to go against what this article is saying. Everyone that's a gamer owns at least 6 consoles and a PC for gaming. That's a hell of a lot of music in the cost of all of the equipment... - mageofdeath, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6I'm glad too, I like games better than the crap the music industry forces people to listen to on the radio or their TV...
- ausfahrt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1To the doubters it doesn't matter if you think everyone listens to music ... if you do the math a 50% growth will double music means that it's ALREADY bigger than music just not by twice as much. I also was under the impression that they make more and spend more making video games than movies. Correct me if that is wrong.
- JQP123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Doesn't a "50% increase" mean 1.5 x as big and not 2 x (twice) as big?
- battletrax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sure because downloading 8 gb games, or 50gig blueray games... burning them to a dvd, then modding your console is near impossible.
The music industry should have seen this coming with the internet. All they had to do was sign a deal with microsoft, so that when they released windows, all your mp3s you get from discs, are stuck to your computer.
Of course nowdays, alot of people would be mad. Back then, not so much. People would buy music like they do videogames, and we would have even greater music. Just like we have great games now. - Zap2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How do measure "big"...I'm saying music wins, as you can listen while you do SO many other things.
Gaming is more of an action by itself. Can't cut the grass and game, but you can listen to music and cut the grass. Same idea for driving etc etc - avisotin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Some people live entire lives, yet never play a single video game. No person lives an entire life and does not have sex with a prostitute.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1whoosh - right over your head
- GARussell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I found interesting the point that although critics dismiss the games as being just for kids, the average age of the gamers is 33. The music industry long ago quit making adult pop (Tony Bennett wins the Grammy every year without competition), and no radio station where I live plays it. If the record companies want to reverse the slide in sales, they need to start making records for adults again. (Of course adults buy genre music like country and urban r&b, but I'm talking about pop music with wide appeal.) I have to think that adults won't go to the bother of downloading pirated music. They'd rather just plunk down the money at the store.
- BlackCow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Unfortunately PC gaming will be left in the dust :-( Every little Timmy wants an xbox for Christmas, not to build a PC.
- fiorenza, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2So fewer people pay a lot more for games, up to four times more. Must be pretty popular.
- NoTiG, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2how is linux going to compete with windows without Directx? Will enough developers use OpenGL?
- Wuss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'm assuming he's basing his statement on his interpretation of what "bigger" is, which is probably sales growth.
Realistically, when it comes to entertainment, nothing will ever be "bigger" then music. Besides, his data is flawed. What's he basing his sales numbers on? Just consoles? Just software? Software and consoles? And on the music side, just downloaded mp3's? CD sales?
If you judge music sales in the same way you judge gaming sales, hardware and software, to gauge the publics priority of 1 medium over the other, then it's only fair to count not just the music and CD's, but mp3 players, ipods, stereos, home hi-fi systems, car speakers and decks, musical instruments, etc. etc. Then see who's "bigger". - enginbeering, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1What the hell does that mean, "bigger than music"? They're not even comparable.
- annenk38, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I doubt it will grow much larger than any entertainment media market in their respective prime times. People still have to go to work, eat, sleep, make babies, etc. It will grow, but at the expense of other media.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1***** ARGUMENT.
You pay, lets say 1$ for a song. it will last 2-5 minutes. You pay 40$ for a game, it will last 30-50 hours. - theboss62, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Two words: we'll see.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0nope -ever heard of the nintendo wii? It's all the rage - you should look into one...
- diggrim, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Start WINE-ing =)
- ASHTONZANECKI, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1HIGHLY DOUBTFUL, and if true, VERY SAD. America would all be obese if this happens...

What is Digg?
