- xTRUMANx, on 12/10/2007, -1/+41Videogame killed the DVD star.
- Sayde, on 12/10/2007, -2/+26That's because no one can decide on a damn DVD format to go with. I'm not buying numerous types of the same movie...

- bs0l, on 12/10/2007, -1/+20Naw... I'll still get the movies for free.
Legally, after they enter the public domain, of course. In 50 years, Transformers comes out! I can't wait. - RedHerringHack, on 12/10/2007, -0/+19It is a higher entertainment per dollar than anything else.
- RedHerringHack, on 12/10/2007, -1/+20Game Time > 10 * Movie Time
- fani, on 12/10/2007, -1/+18Games are starting to break into the Hollywood kind with budgets rivalling that of movies with attention to details, period pieces, professional actors etc. Games are nowadays ending up looking like movies.
I played Call of Duty 4 recently and I really felt like I was in a movie. The experience was further enhanced because I controlled this movie/game. Surreal gaming experience is the result of this.
I'm anticipating more games will come out like Call of Duty 4 - its a movie in a game pkg. - krische, on 12/10/2007, -4/+21Then what would you play the games on?
- Ajajadude, on 12/10/2007, -2/+17And maybe contemplate a reduction in ticket prices?
- carbon12, on 12/10/2007, -0/+12No kidding. Who would pay $25 for a DVD movie that last 2hrs and has limited replay ability when I could spend $50 for a game like Oblivion which would last me 300hrs? Not to mention online multiplayer; I've been playing Starcraft for almost 7yrs and UT2k4 for almost 3yrs.
- thephosphorbox, on 12/10/2007, -0/+11It's about time people realized that buying a good video game will give you many many more hours of entertainment than a DVD movie. Perhaps video gamers will finally begin to shed the stigma we've been stuck with for years.
- allaboutdatiki, on 12/10/2007, -3/+13Games are the new movies.
- novask, on 12/10/2007, -0/+8And they laughed at me when I played video games 10 years ago instead of watching TV. Who's laughing now bitches.
- Topher06, on 12/10/2007, -6/+14Really? Video games have finally reached "mainstream" popularity? I am glad to see they have left that underground niche market they have been stuck in for 30 years.
Jeebus, does anybody even think before they write a gaming related article these days or do they all assume we are 60 year old shut-ins that have finally realized what 7 generations of game consoles are used for. And kudos for calling them "video games", I wouldn't want to get this confused with board games. It would have been a big mistake to lead us to believe Clue and Monopoly have finally reached mainstream status and is surpassing DVD in sales. - scabbers, on 12/10/2007, -2/+9Buried for referencing penny ***** arcade as evidence of anything.
- zyl0x, on 12/10/2007, -1/+8Yeah, but will they be UNSTOPPABLE?
- Leo21k, on 12/10/2007, -0/+7Bitches, bitches still laugh at you.
- boredsam, on 12/10/2007, -1/+7video games have grossed more than hollywood for a few years now, this is not news.
- skyteria, on 12/10/2007, -0/+6Apparently, video games come in a variety of formats. I've tried to play Halo in my Playstation, but it just won't let me.

- daridave, on 12/10/2007, -0/+6OMFG, I went to the movies here in Montreal, QC, Canada this weekend and they raised the ticket price a dollar! 11$ instead of 10$ It's f'ing retarded, breaking a 20 now to watch a stupid movie. Oh, and let's not even mention that the CAD$ is doing good, which means they make more profit, but whatever... this is so stupid. For this very stupid reason, I'm going to download my next movie, not go and watch it as I would have otherwise (I usually went to the moviest at least once every two weeks, which means over 26 movies a year). Great move, now they're going to see 0$ from me!!!
- hektur, on 12/10/2007, -1/+6Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is more movie like in my opinion. Great graphics, awesome colour, wicked voice acting and all cut scenes were made with mo-cap.
- IllBeBack, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah. And how about some ***** popcorn and a soda for less than five dollars EACH?
- JoeViturbo, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5I'm not convinced by this article. The claim is that retail space currently occupied by DVDs will be relegated to Video Games. It is possible....but, it's not often I go into a store and find myself saying "They don't have the game I want" more often I'm saying "All the games I want are too expensive". Video games have a really short sale life on shelves whereas DVDs continue to sell well even after they've been out for months and even years. I guess they could sacrifice DVD shelf space for more copies of the same games but they could just as easily be sure to restock the games often enough that they never run out on the shelf.
Until they start restocking Dreamcast's "Samba De Amigo" I won't be convinced by this article, and I'm not holding my breath for this one. Comments? - MindTrigger, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4You forgot the 'BOOM'.
- spearce, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3no surprise there...i don't know a single person who even buys dvd's anymore. i'd much rather put that money towards bandwidth which solves so many other problems along with my movie watching.
- mortinmaxwell, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3Agreed. There are really only so many games that need to be stocked.
- polyGone, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4uhhhh our holographic projectors!! TV's are sooooo 2006.
- CollapseControl, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4With the Video Marketplace on the 360 you can watch a decent amount of films without a DVD. But I still like adding my favorite movies to an already large DVD collection.
I always like hearing that "GAMING" is becoming more accepted and all around known.
Thanks Halo & Guitar Hero - MacSuxWindozSux, on 12/11/2007, -0/+3In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far...
... - stack3r, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4Every time i go into a store stocking such items, there is always people flocking around the gaming area, the dvd areas rarely have people at all.
I dont buy games from retailers ... STEAM & ONLINE OUTLETS FTW - Syraxis, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3An early sign of the game industry coming to an end is when there is a company like the RIAA/MPAA coming in to "prevent game piracy". Sound ridiculous, but for some reason I could see it happening.
- boredsam, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3Madden, Tetris and Solitaire are what make gaming mainstream.
- jobney76, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I've not bought a new DVD in almost a year. I'm not going to buy the SD versions just to repurchase them in HD in a year or two. I'll wait for the format war to settle down or wait for a tie where every player plays both formats.
- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -0/+2If I had the money I would pay all the idiots who talk nonstop about Halo 3 like its the greatest game ever made to shut the ***** up. And while Halo may not be casual gaming, it broke all 1 day entertainment sales records which in turn got people talking about gaming.
- CrackaPleeze, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Why the vitrol?
It's always nice to know that one's hobby is growing in popularity.
Besides, this is arstechnica. You're preaching to the choir. - HolyChimp, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Games have a smaller target audience? Not everyone owns the hardware needed to play the latest games, whereas I'm pretty sure my toaster can play DVDs.
Or maybe it's because that's what they've charged for years and we keep paying it, so why not? - h4mx0r, on 12/11/2007, -0/+2That would be WICKED SICK!
- banmaster, on 12/10/2007, -1/+3You mean "submitting articles that others have already just submitted" right?
- zerobackup, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Yes but your Playstation or Xbox are at least clear in thier distinction between games. Try Explaining the diffence between DVD, HDDVD and Blu ray to 60 year old and see how far that gets you.
- TokenBlack, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2That's a good point, but games are probably more difficult to make, what with the physics and all. I am not an expert, but I think it would be easier to, let's say, add sound effects, or edit the movie, or even act in it, than design a whole game from the ground up.
- antdude, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2WGA won't help either. I am OK with this. I need more time for games. :)
- nicko68, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry I got swept up in the DVD buying frenzy. Of all the DVDs I own, there are probably a dozen or so I'd actually want to watch over and over again.
- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1What are you people, idiots? Look at who owns the game studios. And the movie studios. And the music studios. Hollywood has been running gaming, music and movies since the beginning.
- BearinG, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1We've been paying 12$ here in Gatineau/Ottawa for a few years now..
Be thankful you guys have a few Theaters.. - inactive, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1The basic statement that DVDs will lose physical retail space to video games, at least some of it, is true. The major music and movies retailer in Canada (HMV) just started stocking games, removing 1 or 2 racks per store formerly occupied by DVDs.
- aleksandar, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Note to Hollywood, make games!
- TokenBlack, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Yep, that's part of the title.
- Shaflugi, on 12/11/2007, -1/+2You don't hear about people talking about Halo? That's weird.
