- merdiesel, on 10/27/2007, -0/+56Jim: You playing that game again?
Dwight: Second Life is not a game. It is a multi-user virtual environment. It doesn't have points or scores, it doesn't have winners or losers.
Jim: Oh it has losers. - inactive, on 10/28/2007, -0/+52Video games did harm to my blood pressure , I can't understand why my sim kept putting his trash on the floor

- Scumbunny, on 10/27/2007, -1/+11At least I'm at the casino, not some local arcade smoking cigarettes, pumping quarters into machines for instant gratification....
Hey, waitaminute...... - starla8383, on 10/27/2007, -0/+9I'm going to play some video games while I mull it over.

- jcastillo81, on 10/27/2007, -0/+6I can't wait till video games evolve into a respected art form. I think right now we are in the early stages of it with games like Spore, Bioshock and (i'll probably get dugg down) the Colombine video game.

- Soofi, on 10/27/2007, -0/+5Video games are generally not harmful, but they do have the potential to influence and inspire individuals, and sometimes in bad ways - but the problem is really with the kids who can't differentiate between reality and fiction. Anyone who has a propensity for harm and violence will take inspiration from somewhere, whether it's a movie, a song, or even a story that one tells - so the root cause is not video games in itself.
When I was younger, I heard from a friend in school about the release of the very first GTA game on the Playstion one - it was the coolest game ever described, the one that lets you actually run people over, shoot at everything, get chased by cops and blow everything to pieces, not to forget the storyline of criminally minded missions to conquer the city - there was no other game that gave this level of freedom to wreak havoc and mayhem. And the 18+ only rating made it that much more alluring. Nowadays, you kids have it easy with a GTA release every other season, but back then this type of game was unheard of. Our societies are built around rules and laws and certain social norms and etiquettes, but there is a part of us deep down somewhere that just wants to run free and wild without a single care in the world, and those of us who restrain ourselves in the real world, we enjoy the outlet of video games to satisfy that need for a bit of craziness and anarchy. Just because some kid shoots up his neighbourhood after playing a game of GTA, the adults look at the video games industry, but we should really be looking at the child's upbringing to see where he get screwed up along the way. Violence and gruesome crimes have been with mankind since we set foot on this earth - you can ban all video games and people will still be out killing each other. The point is that you have to raise your kids and teach them about life - if there's no parenting and no discipline, they will go out and do stupid stuff. But teach them how to live a good life with real values and then it makes no difference if they are living in sin city - they will stick to their principles and do good. - SqueakyWheel, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5and screams everytime you shoot it
- norman619, on 10/27/2007, -0/+5No don't blame video games for an introverted kid. They have been around long before even TV was around.
- norman619, on 10/27/2007, -0/+5If anything video games let me unwind and blow off some steam.
- pkonink, on 10/26/2007, -0/+4Why can there be only 24 hours in a day? I need at least 56.
- mortigon, on 10/27/2007, -1/+5No, he didn't. That's the weird part...
- necbone, on 10/27/2007, -0/+4well, video games help me, kill people effeciently, they help me learn to stealth into buildings, I've learned how to fly spaceships, to hit huge monsters in their "sweet" spots, how I have to get a job to earn money, work hard for what I want, to pick up chicks (special thanks to Leisure Suite Larry), I've learned to hack the Gibson!!!, and finally I've learned how to farm beasts for gold and epic lootz.
- 93TILL503, on 10/27/2007, -0/+4Anybody know where I can pick up a copy of 2nd-2nd life?
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -1/+5I don't.
- skyfire1, on 10/27/2007, -0/+4Going to build a turret in my yard. Brb.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/27/2007, -0/+4Videogames not only do no harm, they do the opposite. They bring people together by providing a fun, interactive entertainment medium. There is also the educational aspect of videogames. All the text in games gave me incentive to learn to read from very early on, and that's just games like Zelda, not to mention actual educational games.
People develop problem solving skills, better hand/eye coordination, improve their logical though processes, etc. What I'm trying to say is videogames have played a large role in my development as a child, and it has been a very positive influence in many ways. The same is true for many other people. As time goes on and a newer generation of people who grew up on and around videogames, the FUD surrounding games will diminish. Hopefully then we won't have to ask ourselves anymore if these games harm us. - inactive, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3Like when Spore crashed because Robin Williams created a life form with 2 noses?
- Christbait, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3As much as I agree with Wright's statement. I find his games are utter trash.
- norman619, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3No because in this case it's true. Unless you were a mindless tool when you were a kid. My parents let me watch anything I pretty much wanted except porn obviously. I also grew up seeing real life violence. Many of my friends were in gangs and on many occasions I witnesses shootings and severe beatings. I hope you do realize reality has more of an impact on someone than fantasy. Not only did I never join a gang but I rarely ever had to resort to violence to resolve issues I had with people. Never been arrested for anything either. I can thank my parents for being involved with me during those crucial years of my development and made sure they were the ones who raised me not the streets or anything else. If exposure to violence makes you more violent than I should be one sick and twisted person. If you are looking for someone to blame for the violent kids today look no further than the parents.
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3i don't know about that, adult films will also take your hand-eye coordination leaps and bounds ahead of most of your friends
- felidaeus, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3If all video games were of the quality and type that comes from the mind of Will Wright we wouldn't be having this argument in the first place.
- Christbait, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3http://www.getafirstlife.com/
- lucidguru, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3I would even go so far as to say that video games do LESS harm. The real problem with films and books is that they are one way --> You follow the story and sit back and observe. With video games this is not the case. You must interact with the media to make it come alive. You become much more engaged in a video game you learn new abilities from this environment. My hand eye coordination is leaps and bound ahead of most of my friends because of my gaming experience.
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3If you lead a healthy lifestyle they won't do harm.
- ZenMojo, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3Violence is down since the start of the 90's. Because of Doom or despite Doom?
- norman619, on 10/26/2007, -0/+2true that
- detales, on 10/26/2007, -0/+2No *****.
- felidaeus, on 10/26/2007, -1/+3Did you just make the first reply to your own comment??
- ZenMojo, on 10/26/2007, -0/+2Like smack, pot, beer, and masturbation...with gigabytes!
- norman619, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2LOL!!!!
- norman619, on 10/26/2007, -0/+2Don't tell me what to do. :-)
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2The article mentioned that certain types of literature got the same response when they came out as video games are getting now. The novel, for instance, was considered to be a completely worthless waste of time, with no artistic value and the potential to harm young, impressionable minds which might mistake its fictitious plots for the truth (beginning to sound familiar yet?) Video games are in a similar stage - the initial offerings may or may not be worthwhile, but they are paving the way for a near-universal acceptance.
As a small digression, graphic novels are in much the same boat - only a couple of decades ahead of video games, for obvious reasons. It's also interesting that both novels and comics started out their life in a serialized form before moving into a more cohesive, publishing-everything-at-once format. I wonder if we'll also this trend with games. - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2If you're too lazy to do your own research, I'm sure as hell not going to do it for you... If you want to "please" not be dug down, post some evidence.
Nothing has been "proven." In fact, everything I have read in the past indicates that there is NO causal link between media and violence. If there is a link at all, it's because media is a _reflection_ of violent society, not the _cause_. Anyone with the most rudimentary knowledge of statistics knows that a link between two pehomena does not indicate that one caused the other. And anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of kids and young adults knows that normally-developed people, even young ones, know the difference between "real" and "pretend." - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Dugg down, as you obviously have never actually played a console video game since the days of Pong (if then)
- jolt459, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2As somebody said before, someday Video games will be considered universal. Much like reading a book, watching TV, watching movies, etc.
Someday when you go to school, you'll be assigned to finish (what ever game) by a certain due date and write a report on it. (Well maybe not quite like that, but hey, I can dream!) - ahpro, on 10/27/2007, -1/+3I am a big fan of Will Wright. I'm getting spore when that comes out and i have every Sims expansion pack and every sims 2 expansion pack to date!
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2Does make your palms hairy, as well as causing baby jesus to cry.
